Book Description
Hidden guides combine unique travel choices, outdoor adventures and little-known locales into a guide where vacations meet adventures. Each guide includes detailed maps, complete internet information for each listing, highlighted author favorites, suggested itineraries and walking and driving tours. Serving as both a travel guide and an outdoor adventure handbook, Hidden Colorado is truly two guides in one. Veteran travel writer and Colorado native Richard Harris balances coverage of the state's fast-growing tourist industry (including alpine resorts, dude ranches and seasonal festivals) and its vast expanses of unspoiled wilderness. His outdoor coverage runs the gamut including 70 parks and wilderness areas, 30 alpine ski spots, 30 snowshoeing trail networks, 38 rental stables with trail outfitters, 24 whitewater rafting companies and 53 fishing streams. The book also zeros in on the state's Western heritage including 53 beautifully restored turn-of-the-century historic hotels, 14 cowboy saloons, 14 stores with Western art and 9 with Indian art. This edition features 20 new maps.

Wrong Information .......2004-08-13
The author of this book needs to check his research next time. He wrongly claims that the early settlement of Auraria grew into the present suburb of Aurora--page 45. This is completely incorrect. Auraria was located on the west side of present down-town Denver and merged with Denver in the mid 1800s. Currently the Auraria Higher Education Center, a tri-institutional campus, rests atop the former location of Auraria. Aurora can be found east of down-town Denver and is an independent suburb of Denver. There is no physical way that Auraria became Aurora. How can the author claim to know the hidden charms of Colorado when he demonstrates a complete lack of understanding regarding the state's history and geography?

Doug M........2007-08-30
I listened to this as an audio CD. This method would of course be better since writting verbatim the way people talk is always hard to read. Just read one of the speeches that Bush makes to see the difference.
An Introduction to Bin Laden.......2007-01-13
Peter Bergen is a journalist, so it is not surprising that this book is a collection of brief interviews or quotes rather than one long narrative. The interviews are arranged chronologically, with some comments by Bergen interspersed to make a more cohesive and readable book. Bergen has clearly done his homework, and this book provides the reader with a good understanding of who Bin Laden is and where he came from. Now if Bergen could just tell us where to find Bin Laden today . . .
osama.......2006-11-10
A good read. Learn all about osama, this is something the government think tanks, should have done. From a very rich family with a good name to the depths of evil. When you think of evil, think of osama and hitler in the same thought.
A Rather Unsatisfactory Bio of Bin Laden.......2006-10-14
Peter Bergen is a journalist well known for his knowledge of Osama bin Laden and al Qaeda. Here he presents an "oral" history by piecing together documents and interviews into what he considers a narrative whole. For the most part there is nothing new here that hasn't already been out in the public domain. And there is very little analysis. It is basically a group of documents strung together with commentary from Bergen.
For me, this style just doesn't work. It's not a very pleasant reading experience. And while the narrative hangs together well - Bergen would have been better off to write a narrative history of bin Laden with deeper analysis. That would have taken a bit more time and work to complete, but it would have served the reader much better.
Superb Context Shows How Clinton & Neo-Cons BOTH Fueled Islamic Violence.......2006-10-09
This is quite a superb composition of the statements of others about Bin Laden, interspersed with very credible observations and conclusion by Peter Bergen.
The book opens with a cast of characters and ends with a "where are they now" listing. It also provides a timeline, but a limitation of this book is that it focuses on Bin Laden alone.
I have a number of notes from this excellent book:
1) The 1967 war in which Israel won was vital in showing the Arabs that it was their own inept and corrupt regimes that were leaving the Zionists in power. Also this book, at the end, where the Sykes Picot 1916 agreement highlighted in the Lawrence of Arabia epic movie, is clearly identified by Bin Laden as the start of the current "crusade" against Islam.
2) Bin Laden was a shy and polite, very religious person with a good education--the classic revolutionary (contrary to conventional wisdom, the rebels are the smart ones that see through the facades).
3) The 1979 invasion by Saudi forces to recapture the Al Haram mosque radicalized Bin Laden, as did the Soviet invasion of Afghanistan. The writings of Egyptian Sayyid Qutb on Islam as a complete way of life, when COMBINED with the corrupt and often decadent lifestyles of the Saudi, Egyptian, and other Arab rules, were in tandem a foundation for the radicalization of youth across the region.
4) The Pakistani cleric Abdullah Azzam was a major influence and enabler for jihadists seeking to fight the Soviets by entering via Pakistan, and the clearly untold story, in this book or any other, is the deep and constant relations between the Pakistani intelligence service, the Taliban, and Bin Laden.
5) In Afghanistan the back story is Bin Laden the theocrat versus Massoud the tolerant secularist in the Northern Alliance.
6) Soviet invasion of Afghanistan produced 6 million refugees, half to Pakistan and half to Iran.
7) The open sources of information available on Bin Laden and anti-Israel and anti-us plans are legion, and the author is extremely effective in cataloging all of the overt information that the U.S. Intelligence Community simply ignored from 1988, when the Commandant of the Marine Corps and I first made terrorism, and the use of open sources to understand terrorism, a national issue.
8) In 1996 Jamal Al Fadl walked in to a US Embassy (probably Sudan) with plans for attacks on US by Bin Laden, and also in 1996 Bin Laden announced on CNN, ABC News and in Al Jazeera that he was declaring war on the US. My comment: in the US, only Steve Emerson ("American Jihad") and Yossef Bodansky "Bin Laden: The Man Who Declared War on America") took the declaration seriously.
9) Clinton and Bush BOTH were happy to deal with the Taliban, and the Taliban understood that the Americans, regardless of party, wanted a pipeline from Caspian energy to Pakistan (rather naively assuming Pakistan would be able to protect it), as well as bases against China and Iran.
10) This book makes it clear that every time George W. Bush talks about them attacking us for our way of life he is simply demonstrating either his idiocy or his hypocrisy. Bin Laden, over and over and over again, has specified Israeli and US behaviors, actions, and policies as the basis for his challenge.
11) In 1998 US rebuked Taliban and Bin Laden raised the ante, also focusing on the jailed Sheikh Abdel Rahman, the only religious figure to have blessed Bin Laden's lay fatwa with a commanding fatwa of his own. This individual, in US custody, has inspired violence from 1981 onwards, and US appears to have not understood his potency.
12) Quote on page 211: Zawahiri was to Osama Bin Laden what Karl Rove is to the White House."
13) Bin Laden explicitly cites Nagasaki and Hiroshima as justifications for targeting US civilians. While the author of this book discounts Bin Laden's having nuclear suitcase bombs, he acknowledges that nuclear waste is easily acquired.
14) On 10 June 1998 ABC aired an exclusive interview with Bin Laden and introduced him as the wan who had declared war on the US. No one noticed. (Steve Emerson's PBS broadcast in 1994 also got blown off).
15) The book toasts the Clinton Administration for both incompetence at getting Bin Laden (but then, the Saudis tried to assassinate Bin Laden several times and also failed), and for lionizing Bin Laden with the Tomahawk missile strike (which another book I have reviewed says included several that did not explode and enriched Bin Laden with $10 million from their sale to the Chinese).
16) The author recounts Bin Laden's illnesses witnessed by others as being Soviet gas impact on breathing, back pain, low blood pressure, foot wound, and NOT kidney failure.
17) Al Qaeda started looking for WMD after they noticed US beating that drum, and probably got their first chemicals from Uzbeckistan.
18) First references to airplanes attacking buildings were in Egyptian press 12 Aug 00.
19) Cheney and Franks both lied to US public about Bin Laden not being at Tora Bora (see my reviews of "JAWBREAKER" and "First In").
20) Al Qaeda's general guidance to all is to first, cause the West pain, and second, seek to arouse all Muslims.
21) Iraq is teaching foreign fighters and Iraqis who will likely become foreign fighters elsewhere, how to use IEDs, suicide bombs, and urban warfare against the West elsewhere.
Bottom line: has we stayed in Afghanistan, and dropped Rangers on Bin Laden as he walked from Tora Bora to Pakistan, it would have been "game over," and even if we had not caught him, he would have been marginalized. The author concludes that everything the US has done, both in the Clinton and the current Administrations, has served to empower Bin Laden and inspire millions of others to support terrorism as a tactic against the Israel, the US, the West, and the corrupt Arab regimes.
Book Description
How is it possible for one middle-aged Saudi millionaire to threaten the world's only superpower? This is the question at the center of Jonathan Randal's riveting, timely account of Osama bin Laden's life and role in the rise of terrorism in the Middle East. Randal traces the current sources of Osama's money and tells us why the Iraq war has played into the hands of the terrorists, while also providing essential insight and background on the history of American involvement in the Middle East. With his long-maintained sources in the Middle East and his intimate understanding of the region, Randal gives us a clearer explanation than any we have had of the whys and wherefores of the world's most prominent and feared terrorist.
Customer Reviews:
Not the book you would think.......2007-02-10
I have gone through half of the book (intend to read the other half as well) but its not the book I thought it would be. Its more of a story of the middle east politics over the past twenty years, the afhgan war and pakistan's involvement in it. Tonnes of information from personal encounters of the author and through his friends and acquaintances. Not your typical bed time book, a bit difficult to digest.
Decent, but not great.......2006-07-14
Jonathan Randal's obviously has a lot of information to work with in light of his decades of work in the Middle East. Due to his vast experience, his book is useful. Unfortunately, it does not contain much information about Osama bin Laden. If the book had been titled something else it would have been fitting as the book was more about terrorism in general and al-Qaeda and Osama more specifically. He has obvious political leanings towards France and is definitely not an alarmist like many that write about terrorism today. Sometimes his anti-American political jibes can be irritating and even irrational. He paints Osama as more or less a good Muslim and never points out where he is not a good Muslim. If he believes that, that's fine. It's a little hard to swallow that he then finds it wrong that the US is in a war against Islam. It seemed to be a major philosophical jump in my mind. If you want to read an interesting book about terrorism and someone's opinion about Middle East politics this is a decent book. If you are looking for a book about Osama find another one.
Real Backstory to our World Under Threat.......2005-12-05
Randall spoke in London in October, 2005. I was there and brought the book back with me. This new (2005 paperback) edition is dramatically improved from the first, as it is informed by a mountain of data drawn together by the 911 Commission, whose report came out after Randal's first book went to press.
Insights can be hard to glean, but a careful reader will see how the terrorists now striking from small to large scales around the world got underway. And it is only too clear how hard it will be to stop them as they operate in unstructured cells in scores of countries.
One of most critical points Randal makes is that Osama's gathering and training, partly underwritten by the US backing for Afghans against the Soviets in the nineties, brought together for the first time scores of disenchanted, religiously passionate people from across Islam. Randal notes that these people, gathered to train and fight by Osama, had little knowledge of fellow thinkers outside their villages in countries scattered across the world.
Now, in the band from Morocco to the Philippines, there are trained, experienced terrorists who know they are part of a global force. This is Osama's real legacy. His killing or capture becomes a small historic fact. As Randal clearly shows, it was Osama at work in the nineties -- long before 911 -- that flows on. There are many lessons to be taken away and they are well illuminated in the new version of OSAMA.
very balanced and objective book.......2005-07-12
A well researched book, balanced and objective, informative and engrossing.
I am very sad that the people who gave it one star are writing as if they have to prove something.
Absolutely Atrocious.......2005-05-30
The self-aggrandizement is downright nauseating. Randal can easily put you to sleep with his "knowledge" and "insight". The title is a little misleading since you dont even hear a thing about Bin Laden till the sixtieth page practically. All you get from this is how the Bush administration is comparable to the Nazi propaganda machine with it's "Big Lies" and that Israel is the Great Oppresor. His constant chastizing of the Bush administration as simpletons toward their policy on Terror is quite comical since his grand idea is appeasement/containment. Wow , do you think he thought that one up all by himself. Bold thinking I'll tell ya. His blather is extremely numbing anchored by his favorite word, comeuppance. I would give it a negative star if I could

Book Description
A hard-hitting, ruthlessly honest political biography of Sen. John F. Kerry that will expose the real views of and dig up all the dirt on the 2004 Democratic nominee for president.
In
Prince Albert, he dethroned Al Gore. Now, David N. Bossie, former chief investigator for Congress, is going after John Kerry and giving every conscientious voter a chance to see the truth about this year's Democratic candidate. Using his trademark in-depth investigating, Bossie gives readers the real scoop on the presidential challenger-fully exposing Kerry's peculiar voting record; early Naval discharge (so he could protest the Vietnam War); self-contradictory positions on such vital issues as health care, education, and campaign finance; and shady political dealings he'd rather voters not know about. With an exclusive jailhouse interview with former Kerry finance chairman, David Bossie has the insider's access and the hard-nosed investigator's savvy to ferret out the truth and present it to readers in a gripping, no-nonsense style. He lays bare Kerry's flip-flops, lies, and duplicitous stances on the war in Iraq, defense spending, tax cuts, Medicare, and corporate greed and corruption-finally unveiling all of Kerry's public and private faces.
Customer Reviews:
What happened to that big draft Kerry said was coming in January '05???.......2005-12-31
1 day to go and the year is up. Actually, John Kerry predicted a draft as early as January 2005. Never happened at all in 2005. It just goes to show that Dave Bossie was 100% right about Kerry and why Kerry was all wrong for the highest position in the USA.
Thank you Mr. Bossie for your role in preventing a major catastrophe. John Kerry was an even worse choice than Al Gore and if he had won, would have taken the title of ther worse president in american history away from Jimmy Carter.
Exposes the many lies of John Kerry.......2005-10-25
I guess the best thing I can say about John Kerry is that you can't call him two faced. One thousand faced is more like it. This guy changes his mind faster then we change our underwear. No wonder he has to google himself to figure out what he said just 15 minutes ago.
Previously, David Bossie did an excellent job revealing the truth about fmr Pres. Bill Clinton and former VP Al Gore. As a result, this work about Kerry sent chills up the democratic party and brought out a myriad number of wild charges against Bossie and defenses for Kerry by people who never even bothered to read this text. No doubt these were the same people attacking Jerome Corsi and John O'Niell as well as all of the 300+ Swiftboat Vets for the well documented and accurate facts in Unfit For Command.
The Many Faces of John Kerry is well researched and documented. If you choose to argue the points in this book, wouldn't it be a good idea to at least read it first?
The 2004 election may be over and thank God Kerry lost. But the marketing machine that tried to pivot John Kerry, a flip-flopper, a man who hardly made a senate meeting in over 20 years, a man who conspired with the communists is still running and getting ready for 2006 and more importantly, 2008. Next time their model may not be Al Gore, Bill Clinton or John Kerry, but rest assured, it will be an equally unqualified person and their basis will be more hype than fact.
Just look at John Kerry. Does anybody really think that this man was qualified to be our commander-in-chief? And he was the media darling of 2004. The hero of the democrat marketing machine. The man that hollywood elitists supported.
For more information on the real John Kerry, read Unfit For Command. I also recommend the 100 People Who Are Screwing Up America by Bernard Goldberg.
Mr. Bossie, I look forward to your next foray.
Kerry was pathetic!.......2005-01-10
Having read Unfit For Command, I really thought that John Kerry had reached his low in Vietnam for the 3 1/2 months that he was over there. But now, having read this well researched and accurate book about Kerry, reading how Kerry voted to have a tax put on gasoline and voted against weapons that are being used by the US Military for national security, it is clear that this man has more than one face and is not fit even to be a senator.
BUT...at least as a senator he can be contained and is limited to one vote. As President.....???? It would have been a tragedy!
Thank you Mr. Bossie for revealing "The Real John Kerry"!.......2005-01-10
David Bossie uncovered the truth about Al Gore and Bill Clinton and now he has done the same on John Kerry. David Bossie unwinds the false image that the media portrays of John Kerry and gives the real dope on this former presidential candidate.
I think all Americans can be grateful to David Bossie and to The Swift Boat Vets for exposing the real John Kerry to the American Public.
Also recommend Unfit For Command by John O'Niel and How To Talk To A Liberal if you really have to by Anne Coulter.
Why this guy is bad for the economy, ssi, healthcare and .......2004-11-01
more. This is not a bash Kerry book. Rather it showcases clearly the philosphy of John Kerry and allows you to decide for yourself. Well documented.
