5 out of 5 stars blue guide to boston and cambridge.......2000-04-09

John Feely has written the thinking person's guide to Boston. This could substitute easily for a history or architecture textbook about the city. It is very accessible because of an excellent index. The text is quite detailed and organized nicely giving first the history, geography and then current status of monuments, buildings, museums, geographic features and neighborhoods. There are some cautions for the buyer. The print is small and the directions for walkers both inside and outside of buildings might be confusing. This is not a guide for hotels, restaurants or entertainment. The book could use some more detailed street maps within each section, similar to the Michelin green guides. Overall a good choice at a good price.

      Book Description

As barriers to international trade and investment are eliminated, taxation becomes an increasingly important consideration in foreign investment decisions. This book describes the many different ways in which national tax rules and international tax principles affect foreign direct investment decisions, and examines their impact on the establishment and operation of foreign-invested projects. The study focuses on tax provisions, in both host and home countries, which have the greatest impact upon foreign direct investment, and looks at the role of tax treaties, the methods of relieving double taxation and of countering tax avoidance. It looks at the application of these rules to specific foreign direct investment situations and examines the impact of taxation upon the establishment and operation of foreign-invested projects. It concludes by examining some of the most recent developments in international taxation, such as the growing concern over harmful tax competition, and attempts to suggest how the international tax system, as it affects foreign direct investment, may evolve as the 21st century begins. The book will be a valuable guide to tax practitioners and executives of multinational enterprises, and will be a useful reference work for students of international taxation.

        Book Description

An associate of Abraham Lincoln offers an intimate view of the president’s relations with military men and top politicians, placing particular emphasis on the election campaigns of 1860 and 1864.

        A. K. McClure, a Republican powerbroker and later editor of the Philadelphia Times, reveals how Lincoln replaced Vice President Hannibal Hamlin with the southern Democrat Andrew Johnson on the 1864 ticket. According to McClure, Lincoln kept his hand hidden in order not to offend Hamlin and his New England supporters. In 1892, the publication of Abraham Lincoln and Men of War-Times caused an angry exchange of letters (included in this edition) between McClure and the late president’s secretary, John G. Nicolay.

For all his nobility, Lincoln was a shrewd and cautious politician, running scared for reelection until major Union army victories in September 1864. McClure writes candidly about William T. Sherman, Ulysses S. Grant, and George B. McClellan. Among the politicians discussed are Lincoln’s predecessor, James Buchanan, who fixed the Southern policy that Lincoln followed until war came; Salmon P. Chase, the annoyingly ambitious secretary of the treasury; Edwin M. Stanton, the moody secretary of war; and Thaddeus Stevens, the ferocious congressman whose relations with Lincoln were uneasy at best.

4 out of 5 stars Wonderful "Window" into the life of Abraham Lincoln.......2000-07-08

Even a casual student of American history can recite many of the salient points of the career of Abraham Lincoln as president. This book takes the reader far beneath the superficial surface information. While McClure was an eyewitness to many of the events described, he maintains an objective viewpoint. I enthusiastically recommend this book to any reader who desires a "fly on the wall' perspective of Lincolns presidency.

Ronald G. Drozdenko, Ph.D., is Professor and Chair of the Marketing Department, Ancell School of Business, Western Connecticut State University. He is also the founding Director of the Center for Business Research at the Ancell School. He has more than 25 years of teaching experience. The courses he teaches include Strategic Marketing Databases, Interactive/Direct Marketing Management, Product Management, Marketing Research, and Consumer Behavior. He is collaborating with the Direct Marketing Education foundation to develop a model curriculum for universities pursing the area of interactive or direct marketing. Working with an advisory board of industry experts, he co-developed the Marketing Database course in model curriculum.

Dr. Drozdenko has co-directed more than 100 proprietary research projects since 1978 for the marketing and research and development of several corporations, including major multinationals. These projects were in the areas of strategic planning, marketing research, product development, direct marketing, and marketing database analysis. He also has published several articles and book chapters. He holds a Ph.D. in Experimental Psychology from the University of Missouri and is a member of the American Marketing Association, the Society for Consumer Psychology, and the Academy of Marketing Sciences. He is also the co-inventor on three U.S. patents.

Perry D. Drake has been involved in the direct marketing industry for nearly 15 years. He is currently the Vice President of Drake Direct, a database marketing consulting firm specializing in response modeling, customer file segmentation, lifetime value analysis, customer profiling, database consulting, and market research. Prior to this, Perry worked for approximately 11 years in a variety of quantitative roles at The Reader’s Digest Association, most recently as the Director of Marketing Services.

In addition to consulting, Perry has taught at New York University in the Direct Marketing Master’s Degree program since Fall, 1998, currently teaching "Statistics for Direct Marketers" and "Database Modeling." Perry was the recipient of the NYU Center for Direct and Interactive Marketing’s "1998-1999" Outstanding Master’s Faculty Award. Perry also lectures on testing and marketing financials for Western Connecticut State University’s Interactive Direct Marketing Certificate Program. Along with Ron, he is collaborating with the Direct Marketing Education Foundation to develop a model curriculum for universities pursuing the area of interactive or direct marketing.

Perry earned a Masters of Science in Applied Statistics from the University of Iowa and a Bachelor of Science in Economics from the University of Missouri.

The book evolved from an outlined developed by an advisory board of industry experts that was established by the Direct Marketing Educational Foundation. Contemporary direct marketing and e-commerce could not exist without marketing databases. Databases allow marketers to reach customers and cultivate relationships more effectively and efficiently. While databases provide a means to establish and enhance relationships, they can also be used incorrectly, inefficiently, and unethically. This book looks beyond the temptation of the quick sale to consider the long-term impact of database marketing techniques on the organization, customers, prospective customers, and society in general. Ron Drozdenko and Perry Drake help the reader gain a thorough understanding of how to properly establish and use databases in order to build strong relationships with customers. There is not another book on the market today that reveals the level of detail regarding database marketing applications - the how's, why's and when's.

              5 out of 5 stars Statistics.......2004-01-28

If you have ever struggled with statistical concepts and books that only partially explain the sources of each variable in statstical equations, then this is the book for you. Their constant repetition of statistical concepts with each example case study was VERY helpful in cementing these concepts in my mind.

Confidence levels, 1-tailed, 2-tailed tests and the application of these concepts in real world marketing situations can be quite confusing. This book once again came through with clearly explained examples and scenarios.

5 out of 5 stars Optimized database marketing training.......2002-11-13

Having read many books on database marketing, direct marketing, data mining & CRM as a consultant, I appreciate the story line approach heading up each chapter most. Many books fall prone to teaching "at you" rather than guiding the user along "through the experience of doing it".

A second critical factor to look for - once you've gotten through all the introductory books - is finding concrete info on how-to, best practices providing significant content and knowledge. This is the true value-add from the masters: learning is incremental and there must be true takeaways to get the 5 stars.

This said, the authors have made an extremely broad, detailed and well spun story out of a subject matter that can be to say the least, challenging... Moreover, the disciplines of customer analysis, database management & modeling, data mining, statistical analysis, marketing planning are all the focus of reengineering by many of today's major businesses.

Consequently, this book leads nicely and rather naturally into a major subject of the day for many IT & marketeers -- Analytical CRM. As such it is a must read for anyone interested in understanding how A-CRM works in many companies practicing DBM today.

A great next step would be to go from the marketing-IT function(-ing) to the broader enterprise, long-term (relational) infrastructure & practices preached by CRM. Show how the DBM process evolves in to and is transformed by meeting Customer Mgmt strategies. How would DBM work in a enterprise integration, near/real-time, customer interaction CRM initiative?

Finally, as an aside, in reviewing MANY course syllabi across the world in DM/DBM, I've OFTEN found this book as the course text if not mandatory-suggested reading.

I agree -- for all & anyone wanting a good complement to Shepard's seminal work - you can't do any better.

              Buy it ! Good reading...

              5 out of 5 stars The only book you'll need...well worth buying.......2002-05-31

When I first became involved with database marketing in the mid-1990s, and through my tour of graduate school a few years later, books on the subject fell into two categories: basic and trivial, or advanced and impossible to comprehend. OPTIMAL DATABASE MARKETING is the perfect reference for what is probably the majority audience segment: marketing managers, senior executives, list professionals, data processors, professors, and students who want to understand all the elements of strategic planning and analysis *and* gain practical knowledge to apply professionally or in research endeavors.

In OPTIMAL DATABASE MARKETING, you get a wealth of material on two aspects of the process - for the price of one. Co-author Ron Drozdenko does a great job defining concepts and detailing potential objectives when building files. His coverage of technical specifications and issues is particularly useful.

As for the subsequent chapters: I don't think there has ever been a book written which covers database modeling, and statistical techniques germane to direct marketing, as comprehensively and clearly. Co-author Perry Drake manages to leave no stone unturned and yet convey knowledge in a style that's both understandable and easy to follow. This part of the book is worth the cost alone.

              5 out of 5 stars Finally, a practical reference!.......2002-05-18

This book is an excellent tool for direct marketers who need to develop, manage and optimize a database. Tells what to do... what to avoid... I recommend it highly.

5 out of 5 stars This book is on target!.......2002-04-13

This is the first book that covers everything from statistics and database technology to the final marketing application. Perry Drake provides many realistic case studies from his experiences in the trenches as a proven direct marketing professional. His statistical, technical and university teaching background makes this book a valuable read for those just entering the field of database marketing or the seasoned traditional marketing professional.

                    Book Description

Nic Rips's son had always known him as a conservative midwesterner, dedicated, affable, bland to the point of invisibility. Upon his father's death, however, Michael Rips returned to his Omaha family home to discover a hidden portfolio of paintings all done by his father, all of a naked black woman. So begins Michael Rips's exquisitely humane second work of memoir, a gloriously funny yet deeply serious gem of a book that offers more than a little redemption in our cynical times. Rips is a magical storyteller, with a keen eye for the absurd, even in a place like Omaha, which, like his father, is not what it rst appears to be. His solid Republican father, he discovers, had been raised in one of Omaha's most famous brothels, had insisted on hiring a collection of social mists to work in his eyeglass factory, and had once showed up in his son's high school principal's ofce in pajamas. As Rips searches for the woman of the paintings, he meets, among others, an African American detective who swears by the clairvoyant powers of a Mind Machine, a homeless man with ve million dollars in the bank, an underwear auctioneer, and a ying trapeze artist on her last sublime ride. Ultimately, Rips nds the woman, a father he never knew, and a profound sense that all around us the miraculous permeates the everyday.

1 out of 5 stars Awful, Pretentious Book.......2007-08-03

This was a completely worthless reading experience for me. It seemed like there was the potential for a good story here, but Michael Rips never really got around to it. He was too in love with his own "quirkiness" and telling bizarre little side tales without explanation.

The non sequiturs in this book were numerous enough to fill up a book of their own. A few random moments and diversions can be entertaining but, for the most part, this was nothing but random moments with brief glimpses of a plot. Over and over again a new character would be introduced for one anecdote--invariably being a disturbing, violent, or sexual one--and then never mentioned again. That would be it. Nothing to do with the larger narrative, no thematic point to it, nothing.

There was the potential of a good book here, but it simply got lost beneath the author's own extravagances and pretension.

1 out of 5 stars Not what it promises.......2006-11-29

Probably the most creative part of this book is it's title and jacket. This is not a mystery story, and the search for the lady in the paintings is just a minor journey, interspersed with dozens of peripheral characters that come and go in a flash. Some funny moments halfway through the book in events that probably didn't really happen (his grandmother getting sucked up a garbage chute into the kitchen from the basement during a tornado)are much welcome after his meandering into unrelated asides from classical literature. It's a short book that should have been much shorter.

                    2 out of 5 stars Misleading title.......2005-12-19

A fellow book club member said that he would give this book one star just for the fact that the author was actually able to get it published. Building on this theory, I am willing to give it another star because I did find many of the anectdotes interesting and/or funny. If it were't for those 2 things, I don't know if I would have given this book any stars.

I was under the impression that this would be a book about a son searching for his late father's identity, trying to uncover some fammily secrets upon the discovery of some paintings of a naked lady in the family's basement, and I think this is what the author intended; however it seemed to me that all this was was a collection of stories about some interesting characters that peopled Omaha, NE over the last century. I think if the book had been titled "A Collection of Stories of the Colorful People in Omaha's History" I would have been more satisfied because I wouldn't have had any expectations for a plot. The author was all over the place, there was no discernable story line that I could find, and I didn't think the revelation of who the naked lady was was all that spectacular. Skip it or change your expectations.

4 out of 5 stars It Happened In Omaha.......2005-10-18

An entertaining tall tale from the heartland. I didn't believe one thing in the book, which isn't good when you're supposedly writing non-fiction. A lot of the book takes place in the city where Rips Senior lived, Omaha, and at a second rate hotel, the Congress, populated by a gang of absurd down-and-outers a la Wim Wenders' Million Dollar Hotel. When Nick Rips dies, his son Michael finds some art photos of a black woman among his dad's papers. This book is his account of how he tried to find out the identity of this mystery woman. Ii involves a lot of white guilt.

It's hard to work up any interest in finding out what lies in the past of such a dud.

"My father had no interest his children and none in himself. The respect that other men sought among their peers, the standing that other men gained through philanthropic or religious involvement, was of no concern to him . . . He laughed, sang, and danced; for him life was an enjoyable, small place." His sentences are first rate, it's the content that disappoints. In a typical Rips anecdote, Michael recalls a neighbor girl, Claire, who walked into her brother's room when she heard him laughing and singing, "Ducks and geese and Chicks and ducks and geese better scurry, When I take you out in the surrey" and found her brother lying on the bed having sex with a live chicken, breaking its neck at the moment of orgasm to increase his pleasure. Does this ring true, that people in the modern era have chickens strutting around their house and that every time someone wants chicken, they kill one? Even in Omaha? It's sort of funny when the narrator whispers to a stuffy woman at dinner that "there's semen in the chicken," but not really so funny, it was funnier in PORTNOY'S COMPLAINT. Practically nothing in the book has even a touch of reality, or if so, it was better done by Philip Roth, Richard Brautigan, or Garcia Marquez.

And yet, if you're looking for a good piece of magical realism, one that makes Omaha gleam like the towers of Trebizond, this is probably the book for you. It says that the author lives in the Chelsea Hotel, where Bob Dylan wrote "Sad Eyed Lady of the Lowlands." He has a bright future as a fabulist, but I don't actually trust him as far as I can choke my chicken.

The poet Weldon Kees is one of the secret inspirations for this book. The characters debate whether or not Weldon Kees committed suicide, as the police concluded, by jumping off the Golden Gate Bridge in 1955. Or is it possible that he sneaked back to Nebraska and was living there at the Congress Hotel perhaps?

Though I generally dislike mystery's, I really enjoyed this book. This is and was a man's life, a real story was being told. What a great book. From the first page I was sucked in. Rips is a wonderful storyteller, knowing just the right amount of humor to throw in. Who knew that Omaha's history was so interesting. I felt that I was sitting i history class ( I love history) drinking up facts about Al Capone's ties to Omaha, brothels and slaughter houses. There were parts of the books that lagged a bit, but its still worth the read, Rips finally finds the naked woman and he finally knows the man that was his father.
