Dreadfully useless.......2006-07-15

I bought this book shortly before moving to Malaysia for a year. Reading it filled me with absolute terror. It made the country sound uncompromisingly alien and rather unpleasant. Thankfully I ignored the book and discovered Malaysia to be a very pleasant and incredibly inviting place.

The problem with the book (apart from the writer's continually negative attitudes to everything) is her very narrow perspective. Before coming to Malaysia, she admits, she spent her whole life in a small Swiss town. Thus, she finds everything that is slightly different from her upbringing horrifying and worth commenting on. The fact that not everyone in Malaysia is European and that they don't eat European food is considered worth several awe-inspired mentions . For anyone who has ever travelled, or who has a more cosmipolitan background, most of these comments are useless and are in fact rather nauseating.

Even worse, however, is the fact that she is only writing for those likely to live in her very specific situation - namely as the wife of a rich ex-pat. She spends a whole chapter lamenting the difficulty of choosing a good maid. She also points out the importance of finding things to do when you are at home and your husband is at work.

For me, as someone working in Malaysia full-time for a relatively modest salary, all this was completely useless. In fact, I'd imagine that for the bulk of people coming to Malaysia, much of this information will be either off-putting or superfluous.

Thus, I'd recommend avoiding this book - otherwise you might decide not to come at all.

This book an invaluable resource for anyone traveling to Malaysia. Did you know it's highly offensive to hand someone an object with your left hand? This book explains the local customs and cultures, so you will be a welcome guest, not one who is just tolerated.

I wanted to like this book but.......2005-09-10

I wanted to like this book; a veteran of the 34th telling it like it was, and it seems that the author is a decent Christian gentleman too. He is very telling on the scandalously unfair way the riflemen were treated and he speaks with what seems to be a voice from the trenches. Even when he is wrong, and he can be so wrong he seems mad at times, he can be forgiven because these may the opinions of the riflemen of that time. Unfortunately no-one edited this book and it is marred by a remarkable amount of repetition. There's a lot of chapters and in each one the same stories, the same complaints, appear again, sometimes twice. In the end it is almost impossible to bear to start the next chapter. A nice man, but you had better be very interested in the GIs of the 34th Division because this is a very hard read.

Lots of How to Materials but Practical?.......2007-09-26

Each chapter has worksheet and to do list, but you have to evaluate the relevancy to your business and the personality to do it. Networking is the best suggestion but not everyone is good at it. Speaking from personal experience, practice, practice, my friend. I didn't finish the book because I didn't feel like doing the worksheets and exercises.

I believe if Forrest Gump were reviewing the "for Dummies" series of books, he would say they are like a box of chocolates. You never know what you're gonna get. I have found a few of these "for Dummies" books to be exceptional, others to be marginal at best, and yet some like this one, MARKETING KIT FOR DUMMIES by Alexander Hiam, that fall somewhere in the "helpful" area.

This book is not exceptionally well written, but does have some pearls scattered throughout. The book is broken into six parts and twenty one chapters. The problems I had with this book start here. Hiam tried to make the chapters and sub-chapters fit into the six parts and some of them just don't seem to belong there. That in and of itself is okay. It's nice to find unexpected resources. But it makes navigation of the content rather difficult.

Another pearl here is the CD. I haven't used it yet, but have downloaded it and it looks quite useful for an array of marketing purposes. Perhaps it will prove itself to be worth the book price.

I guess I would have to say, if you are a business looking for an improved marketing strategy, there are worse places to start, but there are better ones as well. You'll find some useful information here, and strategies that will have a quick impact on your bottom line.

I loved this book. I needed an quick read, easy to navigate, marketing information for a new business. After reading this book one afternoon I quickly learned new information as well as refreshed my memory on other important and critical marketing principles. I keep this book next to my dictionary in the office. These are the two books I use the most when writing and designing dynamic attention ads and new client generators.

Be careful if you want to order this product because Amazon has not existence of it, although it is offered in 2 or 3 weeks. I placed my order in March (two months ago)and never arrived. Finally Amazon cancelled my order. What can I do?

Don't be fooled by the title. This book is a complete guide to building high quality proposals. What appeals to me the most are the pages relating to selling value. Sales Proposal Kit for Dummies incorporates not only the building basics, but what material is necessary to build the perfect proposal. The templates are great, easy to use and more importantly, easy to understand. This book is must have for any sales library.

Poor proposal structure with good elements.......2005-08-02

With the fantastic reviews I had high expectations for this book, and was sorely disappointed. The advice given in the book is worthwhile, encompassing and I found good concepts, yet was also disappointed with the lack of things like bid/no bid processes. The test for any proposal advice given is how good the final proposal is. This is a guide that results in a narcisistic self focussed proposal that has an outdated look and feel.

In my oppinion "Persuasive Business Proposals" from Tom Sant is far superiour, and has been the basis for proposal processes in companies from GE, Boeing and downwards.

You can get good elements from this book, but don't use Bob Kantin's templates. If you do the work make sure you end up with a good updated proposal template in the end. This is not it!

Practical and Easy to Use.......2003-12-16

Finally, a book on proposals that doesn't just talk about the elements of a good proposal but, instead, walks you through the steps necessary to develop a great proposal. The value of the book lies in pulling it out and working through it as you write (or in my case redesign) a proposal. The author does an excellent job of explaining what should be accomplished in each section of the proposal. The book comes with a CD full of forms and materials, though I found the content in the book of much higher quality and value. This one's a keeper.

This book is an amazing look at the true horrors of the russian army during world war ii.

The nazis were bad enough. Then to read about the russians who were supposed to be our allies and they massacre innocent men women and children. Wow! And the author's amazing autobiography was the best story I have read in my adult life! I recommend this to everyone who has a keen yearning for the truth. Read it. You will believe it.
