Very useful (as always)!.......2007-09-26
I own four Eyewitness Travel Guides (France, Germany, Greece and Spain) and they are always useful for my trips. Additionally, I use them as guides even when I am not travelling anywhere, just to get knowledege about places I will not visit. Sometimes I think that some information as ticket pricing is necessary and not provided by this guide, but it is a minor issue when we see the complete usefulness of it.
Definitely Buy this book if you are going to Spain.......2007-08-03
I went to Spain with this book and found it to be extremely helpful. With places to stay (even ratings), places to eat, money info, weather info, health info, emergency info, you name it.. it's in this book. Highly recommended.
ok.......2007-05-25
These books are nice to look at, but offer very little in terms of actual touring and travel knowledge. The are fiendishly constructed, listing little blurbs about the towns and then in the back of the book they have an index of hotels and restaurants. This is not a very efficient way to go about looking for accommodations etc.
It seems that with these books they assume you will be renting a car. There is VERY LITTLE/NO INFO in terms of any information pertaining to bus or train travel. I think for a lot of people this would be very frustrating.
With that said, there are some nice drawings (map drawings questionable) and good photos.
Very good guide.......2007-03-11
Has lots of pics, very good guide. All the major attractions in spain in 1 book. Used it in Spain every day.
Spain. Eyewitness Travel........2006-08-10
Great book, lots of information of where to go, things to do and
beautiful pictures

Value pricing is becoming more common among attorneys and CPAs across the country. Everyone's talking about it, but very little has been written on how to implement this innovative, lucrative option. This resource is designed to provide CPAs, attorneys, and other professionals with the information needed to evaluate the economics of alternative billing methods. Professional's Guide to Value Pricing is an indispensable tool that will help practitioners implement the switch from hourly billing to value pricing, do away with timesheets, and perfect this method of pricing within their firms. This new edition features case studies -- real-world experiences from CPAs who are using this approach. This one-of-a-kind book also comes with a powerful CD-ROM containing all the essential checklists and sample agreements to begin implementing the value pricing model.
Customer Reviews:
A must read for any professional.......2007-02-12
I read this book on the recommendation of a friend, Paul Dunn. Paul had already set me up to become a value pricing (VP) fan as that what he lives and breathes, and so I was already in a positive frame of mind to read the book. Well, the book blew my mind! It delivered on all of my expectations and then some. If you are serious about making a difference in your business, then you absolutely have to read this book.
This book is not just for accountants and lawyers. It is for any service organisation that has a pricing policy. The science behind VP and how to value your services is incredible. And when you've read it, you'll see just how much common sense there is in VP.
We are now working on introducing VP into our firm and while it's not going to be all beer and skittles as we go through the process, what we can see as possible on the other side of VP, we know will make it all worthwhile.
Read and enjoy!
Outstanding help for professional services.......2006-08-18
The author Ron Baker get the point across well, that pricing by the hour is old fashioned to say the least and creates harm between you and the customer. He also shows clearly why value pricing is ethical and how to make the most of your marketing preactices. I would highly suggest this book. It is worth way more than the price!
The most important book to hit our profession in many years.......2001-09-24
Run, don't walk, to order your copy of this book. Ron Baker does for pricing our services what Montgomery did for Auditing.
What a novel idea, to get paid for the value of the services that we provide to our clients.
Ron Baker's goal, as he so aptly describes it, is "to trash time sheets forever". Keeping track of time is the biggest waste of time ever perpetrated on professionals. Accountants have become slaves to the concept of "the almighty hour". We are not selling hours but intellectual capital.
Ron takes you through every step necessary to start your trip to successful value pricing. You will learn exactly how to present this to your existing clients. You will also learn how to use a change order when there turns out to be hidden surprises that no one anticipated. He will explain the concept of service guarantees as an excellent way of gaining new clients and show you in detail how to draft service agreements to use. The book comes with a CD-Rom that has many forms and agreements referred to in the book.
I don't know too many people who are thrilled about the idea of having any work done for them without knowing exactly what the cost will be. It's like boarding an airplane in Los Angeles, flying to New York, and being told your fare will depend on how many minutes you're in the air.
Ron Baker is truly one of the very few original thinkers in the accounting profession. Listen to him; learn from him, and I promise you that you will improve your professional life and most important, your bottom line as well.
Wish I had read this book 20 years ago.......2001-08-31
I bought this book on a trial basis, due to its cost. It came on a Friday, and I scanned it that night. I wrote the check next morning.
This book changed my attitude about my profession. I was ready to quit. Burned out, tired, frustrated, and angry.
Within one month, I had identified 5 major clients and had more than doubled the revenue from those clients. My staff is happier because they feel they are being treated as professionals and generating fees more in line with their abilities. We have "dismissed" several non-productive clients, and haven't missed the revenue. We work fewer hours at more enjoyable work and actually make more profits. It has positively affected my home life as well.
This book will change your life.......2000-01-26
Having read the previous edition of this book for just 20 minutes I e-mailed the author to tell him that "I have seen this book described as the most important book in the profession. Without a shadow of a doubt, it will change my life."
The new chapters make this latest edition even better. Read the chapter on Total Quality Service to understand how to compete in the future. Ron Baker will completely change your views on pricing professional services. You will start to charge what you are worth with a consequent improvement in both income and self esteem.
Recently I was in a group of 70 accountants who listened to the author speak on Value Pricing for just ten minutes. At the end he received a standing ovation. In my 30 years in the profession I have never seen accountants show such enthusiasm for a speaker and his subject.
If you want to change your professional (and personal) life for the better buy this book.

A worthy read from a somewhat biased author.......2003-08-28
On subject alone, Stop the Evil is worth five stars. Dr. Robert Alotta, erstwhile of James Madison University, relates the true tale of William H. Howe, 116th Pennsylvania, a man who fought the battle of Fredericksburg, became violently ill, and deserted for the succor of home. When drunken authorities arrived to arrest him, the situation quickly sank into chaos and one man died. Alotta takes us through the 116th Pennsylvania's experiences leading to the battle of Fredericksburg, Howe's desertion, the violent night of his attempted arrest, his escape and capture, two courts-martial, and his execution. Along the way, Alotta analyzes the unfair nature of the military justice system, sometimes allowing his 1970-ish opinions to get in the way. (It is difficult to research the Civil War military justice system and not become emotional, but that is what historians must do.) Alotta cites sources but not enough, which cost him one star here. His writing is gratefully palatable to a mass audience, but his narrative could have been improved with some judicious editing and cost him another star. (I would also have like to see first hand accounts by Howe on his military experience, but they may not exist.) Alotta's book is 25 years old and out of print but is worth pursuing both for insight into Civil War military justice and general interest reading. With some updating, it could be a great book.
Book Description
High Flying Adventures! Not long ago, young women with mile-high dreams were limited to flying the skies only as passengers or flight attendants. But aviation has always progressed because of the dreams of its pioneers. Meryl Getline is one of those pioneers. She dreamed of being a pilot. She was never content to merely ride the planeshe wanted to fly it, too. Certain that she had the "right stuff," Meryl decidedat a time when there was little or no opportunity for womenthat she was going to be a captain for a major airline. Facing monumental challenges and against near-impossible odds, Meryl succeeded at her goal. Now, you can join Meryl on her true life (and often hilarious) adventures, through exciting take-offs and smooth landings, to become one of the world's first female airline captains! Meryl's message: "Never, never, never, never give up!"

INSPIRATIONAL.......2006-04-14
This book wasn't just fascinating and interesting, but Captain Meryl's life story about her dream to fly is absolutely inspiring! I also couldn't put this book down, but also didn't want it to ever end! Although, it may seemed cliched, Captain Meryl proves in her book that any goal can be achieved in life, just as long as you never give up. Whether or not you have an interest in airplanes or flying, this book is excellently written, it's humorous, and it's just so much fun. I highly recommend this book to ANYONE and EVERYONE!
I read in it one day - couldn't put it down!!.......2006-03-06
A fun and fast-moving collection of stories from one who has many unusual life experiences. A great family book - clean and appropriate for all ages. The author's story is inspiring but never preachy.

Charming, Brave, and Funny.......2006-02-13
This is a charming, brave, and funny memoir of Meryl Getline's journey from young girl mesmerized by flying to airline captain. It is a journey which might seem improbable--but not once you've gotten to know Captain Getline through her own words, and that is a big part of the pleasure of reading her book! Other reviewers have emphasized its place as an inspiring and motivational story, and as a model for pioneering women in a relentlessly male-dominated profession. The book does indeed fill those roles. But Captain Getline's book struck me first and foremost as an exhilarating romance--the real-life story of a young woman's love affair with aviation and her single-minded pursuit of a way to make it last. Perhaps I am starry-eyed because I also fell in love with flying at an early age, but I would have given my eye teeth for the career Captain Getline has earned, and I found myself cheering her on long after I finished the book (in a single sitting). In any case, this book is not just for pilots; anyone who has ever loved flying or travel, or who has faced adversity in a chosen career, should find it touching.
In fairness to Captain Getline, I agree with other favorable reviewers that the motives of a group of strongly negative reviews posted to this site in May 2005 are highly suspect. These clustered diatribes appear on multiple book review sites and are the only negative reviews of Captain Getline's book which I have seen. Charitably viewed, these reviews may well represent the hostility of other pilots so jaded or jealous or embittered by the airline industry that they need to get out of the cockpit. Regardless, these negative reviews strongly suggest an irrelevant and twisted political vendetta which has no proper place in this book review forum.

Book Description
A brand’s meaning—how it resonates in the public heart and mind—is a company’s most valuable competitive advantage. Yet, few companies really know how brand meaning works, how to manage it, and how to use brand meaning strategically. Written by best-selling author Carol S. Pearson (The Hero Within) and branding guru Margaret Mark, this groundbreaking book provides the illusive and compelling answer. Using studies drawn from the experiences of Nike, Marlboro, Ivory and other powerhouse brands, the authors show that the most successful brands are those that most effectively correspond to fundamental patterns in the unconscious mind known as archetypes. The book provides tools and strategies to:
• Implement a proven system for identifying the most appropriate and leverageable archetypes for any company and/or brand
• Harness the power of the archetype to align corporate strategy to sustain competitive advantage

Customer Reviews:
Disappointing.......2007-09-14
I was disappointed by the lack of rigorous thinking in this book.
Sure, different companies have different personalities and personality is part of the brand. We could even create our own set of Jungian archetypical brand personalities, and go about attaching them to different brands.
But now for a test. Is Coca Cola a Creator -- helping inspire its users to do great bubbly things? Is it a Caregiver -- showing care for others? Maybe it's a Ruler -- a tough competitor and long the top dog in Cola Wars? How about a Jester -- always at the center of a good time? Or just it's just the drink for Regular Guys and Gals? Look at the ads -- maybe its a Lover or at least a drink for Lovers sharing a soda with two straws? Or, how about an almost Heroic presence, again from ads? Sometimes, it has a sort of Outlaw feel (with folks like Mean Joe Greene playing Robin Hood handing a Coke to a kid). In the old days Coca Cola ads praised it both for giving energy and a calming effect -- though there's no archetype for either of those. So, maybe it is more a Magician -- think of some of those magical ads past and animated present and its ability to give both energy and calm the soul. Given Coca Cola's global ubiquity and appeal, it might well be the drink of Explorers. It might even be (given the caffeine) the energy drink for yuppie Sages? Well, it turns out (according to the authors), that Coke is clearly so successful because it's an "Innocent." The toughest competitor in the Cola Wars, a mixture of caffeine, water, and sugar, almost wizened from a century of success -- yeah, it's clearly an Innocent and that explains everything.
My point is that the book lacks any sense of rigor, proof, or science-like basis in fact. The authors do a clever job of retrofitting achetypes to brands, and several of the cases are interesting, but the whole thing appears to work better in hindsight than proven principles for brand success. One could equally well, in this reviewers opinion, talk about aligning your brand with top-rated TV shows, Tarot cards, signs of the Zodiac, or (with at least a tiny bit of science) Myers-Briggs personality types --- "proving" the case with stories about how GE, Toyota, Google, etc. etc. all fit some stellar or personality pattern.
The kernel of truth in the book is that people like their brands, products, and companies to have a predicatable, attractive, and aspirational subtext. Creating an enduring and attractive personality makes sense, at least as long as the personality remains relevant.
Speaking of personalities, what's the Jungian archetype for the Maytag repair man? Is he a Regular Guy, sidekick to a Hero, or a Jester? Is the Ultimate Driving Machine (BMW) a Hero or an Explorer . . . with maybe the 3 Series for Regular Guys and Gals with higher aspirations than Honda and Toyota owners? No doubt the authors could tell us, though I doubt their hindsight would be of much value in predicting past or future business success.
What might be of value to some readers, especially those who think Jung had the last meaningful words on human decision making, is that some structure (almost any structure, even the Yellow Pages or TV guide) can be useful in brainstorming product and brand alternatives.
Wow, a new archetype!.......2007-08-06
Amazing... discover some (partial) new knowledge of psychology for the sole purpose of manipulating and profiting from others!
While this is standard for advertising types, it would only be fair of Pearson to discuss the other core archtypes at work here: the Crook, the Scam Artist, the Amoral Profiteer. These are real archetypes, that most readers of this book are living. Make money Peason, ok, but face your shadow and dont be part of the human problem; be part of the solution.
Dry but valuable.......2007-07-28
Alright, I'll be the first to admit it; this book is not an easy read. In fact, I'd call it a slog (and I'm a readaholic who can't put down the back of a cereal box!). But, the concepts presented are worth the work. The authors explain what's so darn compelling about Apple's logo, what type of client you want to speak to, and what they need you to say to make a connection with them. Plus much, much more.
So if you're trying to get a handle on branding and figure out what will work for you, grab this book. Thankfully, although it is dry as bone, it's fairly skim-friendly. So do what I did and skip the parts that don't apply or get too boring, and just look at the handy call-out boxes of bulleted info. You'll get the meat of the book without having to work so hard.
A Brand Is Never Just A Logo.......2007-03-08
If you're in the business of building brands. positioning products and adding value to organizations, this is a must-read. Simply organized, easy to follow and full of insight and thought, this book belongs on the office desk of every one who's involved in the science and art of marketing and brand development.
Insightful.......2006-11-11
This book draws some rock-solid suggestions about how companies can build successful brands by tapping into the fables and stories that are hardwired into our DNA. Uses insightful examples and makes what could have been a pretty dry read into a book that I actually read cover to cover on a cross-country flight. That's an achievement as generally five minutes spent reading on an airplane puts me into a deep sleep.
