Book Description
Although the history of Chinese overseas migration to Southeast Asia is widely known, the untold story is the overland movement of Chinese as traders and settlers into the domains of Southeast Asia's mountain chieftains and lowland princes. Known colloquially in Northern Thailand as "haw," the Yunnanese Chinese inherited the legacy of entrepreneurial and mediating roles from early traders. At the same time, their identity in contemporary Thailand has been shaped by cold war politics and, most recently, the forces of globalization in the Southeast Asia region. Ann Maxwell Hill's work on the premodern caravan trade and the Yunnanese Chinese illumines previously unexplored corners of Southeast Asian history and ethnography. Drawing inspiration from E.R. Leach and his successors, Hill demonstrates how ethnic identities change in response to both the process of localization and the larger structures of state, region, and their economies.

Fodor's London 2005.......2005-08-12
As usual, Fodor's hits the mark.
Well organized and helpful.
Useful tips on currency exchange and telephone communication.
London.......2005-07-31
First, if you are considering a trip to London, I highly recommend it. London is my favorite (so far), and I just returned about a week ago as I write this, and I am already planning another trip.
I had used the Fodor's guide while visiting London. It was beneficial and enhanced the enjoyment of my trip.
Second, I would recommend, if you are visiting London, to purchase this book well in advance (if that is feasible) and plan your trip intelligently. I found so much to do in London, there are so many options, that I was not able to do everything that I would had liked to. I do not want that to happen to you! I am confident that the Fodor's guide will be beneficial for your trip if you are lucky enough to visit London.
---
Now, I would like to provide a list of a few must-see's in London
---
---
Theatre
---
I had attended several plays and musicals while in London, however, I found the Globe Theatre to be the most entertaining. In fact, I attended two performances, Pericles and A Winter's Tale. It was great fun, and tickets can be purchased for as cheap as five pounds!
---
Museums
---
So many it is difficult to really select one. I would recommend the British Museum, the British Library, Tate Modern, Churchill's Bunker (definitely do this, far exceeded my expectations), National Gallery, and National Portrait Gallery.
---
Pubs
---
Black Friar. The Black Friar is my favorite pub in the world. The beer selection is excellent, the food is great, and the building and the design is wonderful. While I London, I believe I visited five times in a three week period.
---
London Eye
---
A lot more fun than I anticipated! Excellent city views. Do not miss this, it is worth it!
---
St. Paul's
---
I have visited the four famous basillicas in Rome, and I think St. Paul's might be my favorite Cathedral. The beauty of it and its history are extraordinary, and the views of the city are likewise extraordinary. I am certain you will not be disappointed if you visit St. Paul's. I would absolutely not miss this cathedral. Also, you should visit Southwark, which is not too far from the Globe Theatre.
The above are just a few of the many opportunities in London. I hope the above was helpful.
You're going to LOVE BRITAIN! .......2004-09-24
I've spent a year in England and have made >30 visits all together.
Here are my reviews of the best guides....to meet you r exact needs.....I hope these are helpful and that you have a great visit! I always gauge the quality of my visit by how much I remember a year later......this review is designed to help you get the guide that will be sure YOU remember your trip many years into the future. Travel Safe and enjoy yourself to the max!
Fodor's
Fodor's is the best selling guide among Americans. They have a bewildering array of different guides. Here's which is what:
The Gold Guide is the main book with good reviews of everything and lots of tours, walks, and just about everything else you could think of. It's not called the Gold guide for nothing though....it assumes you have money and are willing to spend it.
SeeIt! is a concise guide that extracts the most popular items from the Gold Guide
PocketGuide is designed for a quick first visit
UpCLOSE for independent travel that is cheap and well thought out
CityPack is a plastic pocket map with some guide information
Exploring is for cultural interests, lots of photos and designed to supplement the Gold guide
MapGuide
MapGuide is very easy to use and has the best location information for pubs, hotels, tourist attractions, museums, churches etc. that they manage to keep fairly up to date. It's great for teaching you how to use the underground and the double decker buses. The text sections are quick overviews, not reviews, but the strong suite here is brevity, not depth. I strongly recommend this for your first few times learning your way around the classic tourist sites and experiences. MapGuide is excellent as long as you are staying pretty much in the city centre. When you get to be an old London hand, remember that the classic Londoners guide will always be an A to Z (zed) map and guide. If you want to go a bit beyond the central core of the city (perhaps to Windsor, Hampton, or further away) you really need the proper AtoZ to be able to find exact routes and streets.
Time Out
The Time Out guides are very good. Easy reading, short reviews of restaurants, hotels, and other sites, with good public transport maps that go beyond the city centre. Many people who buy more than one guidebook end up liking this one best!
Blue Guides
Without doubt, the best of the walks guides.... the Blue Guide has been around since 1918 and has extremely well designed walks with lots of unique little side stops to hit on just about any interest you have. If you want to pick up the feel of the city, this is the best book to do that for you. This is one that you end up packing on your 10th trip, by which time it is well worn.
Michelin
Famous for their quality reviews, the Red Michelin Guides are for hotels & Restaurants, the Green Michelin Guides are for main tourist destinations. However, the English language Green guide is the one most people use and it has now been supplemented with hotel and restaurant information. These are the serious review guides as the famous Michelin ratings are issued via these books.
Let's Go
Let's Go is a great guide series that specializes in the niche interest details that turn a trip into a great and memorable experience. Started by and for college students, these guides are famous for the details provided by people who used the book the previous year. They continue to focus on providing a great experience inexpensively. If you want to know about the top restaurants, this is not for you (use Fodor's or Michelin). Let's Go does have a bewildering array of different guides though. Here's which is what:
Budget Guide is the main guide with incredibly detailed information and reviews on everything you can think of.
City Guide is just as intense but restricted to the single city.
PocketGuide is even smaller and features condensed information
MapGuide's are very good maps with public transportation and some other information (like museum hours, etc.)
Lonely Planet
Lonely Planet has City and Out To Eat Guides. They are all about the experience so they focus on doing, being, getting there, and this means they have the best detailed information, including both inexpensive and really spectacular restaurants and hotels, out-of-the-way places, weird things to see and do, the list is endless.

Book Description
Get the inside story on America’s most powerful political dynasty.
President George W. Bush leads our nation in a time of unprecedented peril. But how well do we really know him or his remarkable family, whose history often mirrors the history of America? Now, in the first full-scale biography of the Bushes, Peter and Rochelle Schweizer trace the extraordinary trajectory of their rise to power.
Through a series of exclusive, surprisingly candid interviews with members of the family and close friends, the inner workings of this very private family are revealed: their marriages and friendships; the intense sibling rivalry between George W. and Jeb Bush; divisions between father and son over the Iraq war; even Jeb Bush’s plans to run for president in 2008. Never-before-seen private photos add even greater detail and depth to this fascinating family portrait.
And above all, we see George W. Bush the way his family does, as an intensely driven person who has a much more complex relationship with his father than has often been portrayed in the media. Family members talk about how he deals with the stresses of the war on terrorism, why he sees it as a “religious war,” and how his personal faith influences what he says and does.
The Schweizers also delve into the Bushes’ sensitive and secret business dealings, including their long history of involvement in the oil business. Their shrewd alliances with other American dynasties—including the Kennedys, Rockefellers, and Tafts—have all helped to quietly consolidate their power within the Republican Party.
Indeed, what makes the Bushes so successful is that they function less like the great political families before them and more like a high-tech startup: free-flowing, pragmatic, and opportunistic. It is this distinction that assures them an enduring presence on the nation’s political stage, making The Bushes essential reading for anyone who cares about America’s future.
Customer Reviews:
It's all in the Family .......2007-02-01
I generally read more on business and technology but picked up a copy of this book just to get an idea of Bush's background.
I agree with one of the reviewers that it's hard to write an unbiased book on such a political topic. The book is certainly pro-Bush but gives a glimpse into the generations of the political dynasty.
Two key takeaways from the book:
* Oil is certainly in the family, perhaps the reason why the President focuses on energy as a means of National Security.
* The power of the Yale Cosa Nostra, and the Skull and Bones Society...repeated in several chapters
What a Sycophantic Piece of Garbage!.......2006-06-03
Schweizer continues to flog his breathless admiration of everyone wealthy, Republican and corrupt.
Schweizer utterly fails to address the Bushes' multifarious connections to both Organized Crime and to the Nazi Party. After all, when Schweizer refers to a "company headed by Prescott Bush", he neglects to address the fact that that company was the Union Banking Corporation which invested in Nazi industrialization and profited from slave labor at Auschwitz. (See John Loftus's books, if you doubt this.)
And, when he says that Prescott Bush was defeated because of smears of being "for" birth control, Schweizer fails to note that the Senator was a charter member of the International Eugenics League - a group that does NOT promote "birth control" but one that, rather, promotes the sterilization of the illegal, the immoral, the disadvantaged, the poor, the needy and the retarded, and practically every other social group that was deemed unfit for inclusion in the Bushes' "polite society".
End of the Dynasty?.......2005-10-28
Peter and Rochelle Schweizer, the authors of The Bushes: Portrait of a Dynasty, claim to have relied mainly on interviews with friends and family members of George W. and George H. W. Bush for their information. The authors' politics apparently leans to the right, judging from the recent release of a new book by Schweizer about the hypocrisy of liberals. And yet, The Bushes: Portrait of a Dynasty, while hardly a brutal attack on the family, does not leave the reader with a very positive view of the Bushes.
George H. W. comes across as an ambitious man who schmoozed his way into jobs, and who worked hard, but who had no big goals he wanted to accomplish. He famously acknowledged that he lacked "the vision thing." He seemed to be absent as a father, but that wasn't unusual in those days. Still, for a man who claimed to prize loyalty and family above all, it was unforgivable for him to miss George W.'s graduation from Yale. His father's absence at the ceremony was a big disappointment to George W., according to this book, so it seems even stranger that he too would miss his own daughters' graduations.
George W., in this book, comes across as a rude, foul-mouthed, ruthless politician who learned the family business while acting the heavy during his father's administration. He also learned that the press was the enemy and that his father wasn't tough enough. His behavior while he was drinking was irresponsible, but after he stopped drinking and found religion, he didn't seem to be any more pleasant to be around. He still mocked friends as well as perceived enemies and was strident about his religious beliefs.
I'll admit that I skipped most of the parts about the generations before George H. W., but the sections on the two presidents, plus Jeb and the other brothers, make up for the boring spots. The women are glossed over, not because of the authors' bias, but because women are only for support in this family. Barbara burst out of that role and upstaged her husband, but it is unlikely that Laura will do anything like that. And the lone sister, Doro, makes no mark at all.
Portrait of a Dynasty is an enjoyable read, and I have only one quibble. There is too much repitition. In one paragraph, Laura is described first as "shy," then as "reluctant,", and finally as "shy and reluctant." Maureen Dowd's on-again, off-again e-mail correspondence with George H. W. is mentioned several times. This sort of thing happens throughout the book. Other than that, I recommend the book to Bush fans and non-fans alike.
Shallow Like the Bushes.......2005-05-31
Biographies of prominent individuals or families are generally researched studies that give us a deeper look into the subjects. But this tale of the Bush family is a flawed skimming of all the questions that ought to be explored. We get little in the way of serious personal portrait of family individuals and especially the two President Bushes. Instead a sugarcoated story that excuses all their bad behavior and poor decisions almost without exception is served up in a manner designed, but failing, to evoke admiration. It reminds one of those complimentary biographies that CEOs pay to have written. It further always assumes that the reader will agree with the Bushes political actions leading you to conclude that no serious scholarship was intended by this work. The only accurate description would be that it is shallow, like the Bushes.
Not what is Needed.......2005-04-08
It's hard to write an unbiased book on such a political topic, but regardless, "The Bushes" is so pro-Bush, that it hardly differs from the other pro- or anti-Bush books coming out these days. Will somebody please just forget personal politics, forget personal biases, and write a book that's neither condemning nor adulating?

Book Description
John Kerry has had a remarkable life and is one of the most respected public servants in America today, having come to the forefront of national consciousness as a veteran speaking out against the Vietnam War just after he returned from the front lines. He is one of the most powerful leaders of the Democratic Party and-with a fierce landmark presidential campaign looming before the 2004 election-could one day become the most powerful man in the world.
As an outsider among insiders in the U.S. Senate, John Kerry has never been afraid to battle the political establishment and fight the fights that need fighting. Now, in A Call to Service, Kerry formally introduces himself to the nation. In a book rich with autobiographical details that explain the experiences behind the ideas, Kerry offers his vision for America.

John Kerry: American Dimwit.......2006-04-25
John Kerry continues to amaze. His vision "for a better America" includes making fun of our troops, calling them stupid, and accusing them of war crimes. Now, we find out that a woman who donated to his campaign and worked in the Clinton White House leaked sensitive information from the CIA - and Kerry defended her on ABC News!
The truth is, America was spared from having this fool as President.
BOOK WAS A LIFE SAVER!.......2006-02-17
I knew I was lacking something in my life something just was not feeling right.. BUT! after I purchased this great book I never felt more ALIVE! this is with out a doubt THE BEST TOLITE PAPER!!! ever invented. After a fresh morning glory the pages of John Kerrys Babble make my fanny feel fresh and clean. I recomend to readers to wipe with the democratics view on gun control nothing feels more American than cleaning actual S#%T with litterary S#$t
P.S. you may hate BUSH but terrorists hate you more Hug a rainbow HIPPIES!!
Hot, hot, hot.......2005-12-21
Just when you thought JK couldn't state his exact opinion any better, he comes out with this little book of poems. This man clearly has a gift of directness and an uncanny ability with the English language. Who would have thought to rhyme 'Cancel the Dance' with 'Sansabelt pants'..seriously, who? Oh wow. Highly recommend.
a disappointed overseas reader.......2005-11-03
Those who like John Kerry or voted for him will love his book. Those who wanted something to sink their teeth into will be disappointed. I was. His writing is verbose and prosaic, and I became impatient with his unrelenting stream of consciousness style. Kerry's views in this book lack intellectual rigor or pith and have a pedestrian, sophomoric appeal of the commonplace. It actually put me to sleep. After having read it, I still don't have any larger insight into Kerry's political philosophy and I have the impression that I was just supposed to get into a sort of feely John Kerry state of being. His title promised a vision but the result was more a glimmer. I bought this book in an overseas bookstore at more than it's cover price and wish I could send it back to him for a return on my money.

Gotta love Saskatchewan.......2005-08-22
I bought this book simply as an assignment for an English class where we had to read a book by a Canadian author. Luckily I chose this book! Living in Saskatchewan myself, I relate to many of the same feelings the author describes, particularly about the seasons, and the simple summer pleasure of going to the dairy queen on 8th at 10:00 at night. I think the readers living in Sask. will have an extra appreciation of where Mr.Carpenter is coming from.
Lots of fishing stories.......2000-09-05
Generally a good book but it lacked the stories of Saskatchewan life I wanted to read about. Almost every story was about fishing which may be the only thing one does in Saskatchewan. I had expected more about the province, more stories and tales about Saskatchewan. What I found were stories about Carpenters life, although interesting, not very reflective of living in Saskatchewan.
