Color Wheel.......2007-07-26
Die Farben Berlins was a pleasure to use while touring Berlin. A simple idea, you would think more cities would design such a guide. It led me to another very interesting book "Feeling Berlin" By Prestel Books. I used both books and a huge map of Berlin to explore one of Europe's most vibrant cities!
Berlin creativity at it's best - in color.......2005-08-12
This book/concept works on so many levels. Having spent a lot of time in Berlin, I found this book to be a real treasure. Berlin is about design, and color, and exploring, which is what you get here. There is a photo, and 2 big color chips based on the photo. Not your typical tourist photos, but photos which make Berlin memorable. On the back of each card, is a quote about the scene, and a map showing where the photo was taken. Each card is in English and German which will help those trying to pick up some German. My only surprise was not seeing the Ampelmann, (former East Berlin walk/don't walk traffic signal), with the obvious green and red color. Just surprised, but by no means disappointed. Now.....if they would just do my favorite city of Hamburg......

Book Description
This is the true account of an operation which took place between 1942 and 1943, at a time when the Allies were planning to invade Italy through Sicily. In order to distract German attention from the Sicilian invasion, "Operation Mincemeat" was launched with the intention of feeding German intelligence with false information. This theory was clearly not new, but the idea of accomplishing this by washing a dead body up on Spanish shores, complete with highly confidential and sensitive correspondence was audacious and innovative.
The Man Who Never Was provides an exciting, firsthand account of how this peculiar counter-intelligence scheme came into being, the many unpredictable and often amusing difficulties which the agents encountered when inventing a whole life and persona for their "body," and the ultimate and unforseen successes which the opreation gained. Written in a period of forty-eight hours by the originator and coordinator of the operation in order to dispel myths circulated in a novel on the same subject, this book gives a fascinating insight into one of the most daring wartime operations in military history. A new Introduction explains how "Operation Mincemeat" fits into the broader history of wartime intelligence and deception, still classified when the book was originally published.
Customer Reviews:
Ingenious.......2007-09-26
It seemed like a simple plan: Leave a dead body, supposedly a British officer carrying official papers, for the Nazis to find. If they accept the phony papers as genuine, they won't anticipate the planned invasion of Sicily, and will deploy their defensive troops to Sardinia instead.
Simple in concept, but extremely complicated in practice. The author, who was the British intelligence officer in charge of the scheme, had to make the deception plausible down to the last detail.
It worked! Hitler himself was fooled, as captured German documents later showed.
This book goes into the details in full, and it is fascinating every step of the way. The author clearly was brilliant at his work, and as a bonus he has a nice, dry wit.
This true story is at least as rewarding to the reader as any work of detective fiction.
First hand account of a brilliant espionage campaign.......2002-07-20
Modern novellists would never have thought of this simple yet highly complicated plan to deceive the Germans during World War II. This book is written by Ewen Montagu who actually undertook the whole operation. Due to the fact of its high secrecy it could not first be revealed until the Mid-1950's when the first edition came out. Even then the full story could not be told for one of the other great secrets of WWII (the fact that the British had cracked the German code 'Engima') meant that the progress of the deception was monitored throughout its progress.
The deception was simple - dump a body with highly secret documents in a place where the Germans will be party to the find. Make it so convincing that they will take the bait. This was to mislead the Germans over the true place where the allies wanted to land (Sicily) so getting them to fortify another part of South Eastern Europe instead - the Dodecanese and Sardinia. It was a plan to save lives - as many allied lives as possible by reducing German resistance. And it worked - beautifully.
This book by Montagu gives us the absolute inside story with all the twists and turns to how the idea was conceived and how it was implemented. And for such a simple idea it was of course relatively complicated to implement. How to find an appropriately dead body to dump - where to dump it - how to make sure the Germans would find it without being suspicious of the material and so on. All very fascinating stuff and makes for a good, quick and easy read - it is very well-written and if nothing else is such an amazing story it is hard to put down.
This story is well publicised now - it has been the subject of at least one film and one documentary in the "Secrets of World War II" series, however it is nothing like information straight from the horses mouth to make you appreciate what it was all about.
My conclusion - Relatively short book but highly readable and very well worthwhile picking up even if your interest isn't in the arena of either War or World War II.
Famous case.......2001-08-28
This case is very famous. I remember reading about it in a declassified article in a Swedish book meant to teach intelligence to students of journalism at Lund University.
Fun read, good story.......1999-01-08
"The Man Who Never Was" is a real page-turner, even though I already knew the basic story. Lots of good information on a well-conceived and -executed intelligence operation that the Germans fell for hook, line and sinker. Makes me wonder how many failed counterintelligence operations we suffered to achieve one success? Writing can be a little stuffy in a couple places but on the whole is good.
The British deception before the Sicily landing in WWII........1998-06-23
The book tells the story how British Intelligence decided to mislead the Nazis in 1943 about where the next landing in the Mediterranean would occur. The original story was that they waited until a young man died of pneumonia, so he would have fluid in the lungs as cause of death. In fact, he was an unclaimed homeless man who died from eating rat poison. A submarine slipped his body into the sea off Spain, making it look like he was a Royal Marine officer and courier, and a victim of an offshore airplane crash. This was done near a town with a known active Nazi agent. The brief case he was carrying falsely showed that the Allies would invade Greece, not Sicily. The Nazi agent was allowed to see his papers which showed a coming landing in Greece. The movie has King George himself meet with the family to convince them to give over the body, missing burial with his family. In reality, the man eventually was buried with military honors in Spain. Since the original book was published, a new edition has appeared (Oxford University Press, 1996). We have learned that the first edition would never have been written had not a novel appeared in 1950 with substantially the same plot. The new (1996) edition reveals approval by the Twenty Committee in charge of these projects (Twenty = XX = double cross). The new introduction also reveals the British monitored the progress of the deception using Ultra. In the original edition, the one who conceived the operation was "George." Now it can be revealed that it was created by a lowly Flight-Lieutenant, Charles Cholmondeley, and carried out by the author, who later became chief judicial officer of the Royal Navy. The deception was a success. The Nazis did move some forces away from Sicily. Even two weeks into the invasion of Sicily, the Germans were still believing the main attack would be in Greece. It is a great read on how long it takes to put together a successful deception, and the great risks as wel! l. If it had failed, the Nazis would have known for sure the invasion would be in Sicily. The benefit was Nazi forces sat in Greece waiting for an invasion that never came.

A Reference for Politicos.......2001-09-14
Quite simply, this is a fairly comprehensive biographical reference of those who play roles in politics that are in any way visible on the international level. Mostly, it is helpful for those obscure references to long-dead and/or faraway politicians whose names sound, perhaps, familiar. I recommend this book as a companion to political writings generally.

A Great Addition to Your Reference Library.......2001-06-14
If you want to know who's who of the 20th Century, this is the book for you. It has brief paragraphs outlining the lives of various persons who have made a great impact on our previous century. Although it appears to be slanted somewhat to Europeans, that could just be my American viewpoint. It is a great introduction for students of famous world figures. A recommended addition to any library.

The Title Says It All !.......2007-05-09
Sometimes a book title can be misleading, but not so in this case. In fact, this book delivers what it offers, with a giant bonus - PR advice that works.
SELL YOURSELF WITHOUT SELLING YOUR SOUL is a guide to succeeding in business and in public life, without losing the essence of who you are...without selling out. Susan's book is filled with wisdom, humor, kindness and realworld PR savvy.
This is a wonderful book for the person who wants more success and more visibility for herself or her cause, within her ethical construct. I highly recommend this book.
A 21st Century .......2007-01-21
Having read a good number of the reviews of this superb book by Susan Harrow, I'll skip points I am happy to see others have covered so well. I also won't take time to summarize what's in the book so much as what I see pervading it and coming through it.
As a spiritual teacher and "Heart-awakener" with a huge focus on personal integrity and realness, I loved finding these two qualities radiating off every page with a consistency, strength, and confident serenity that can only come from someone who's walking her talk. For me from the title on through to the index, the book is a huge sigh of relief. There's so much hype in the world of publicity and marketing. I have to confess that even as a successful teacher of self-awareness and personal and relational integrity it's a struggle for me to read the compass clearly as I attempt to bring my work forward into the clamor of the marketplace. It's a challenge to make both audible and intelligible sounds that still ring entirely true to who I am and who my wife and partner Linda and I are together in our work. Underneath and shining through every single detail, Susan is initiating us neophytes and, I'm sure, many veterans with her obvious mastery of that profoundly intimate craft. That's the main reason I call the book a "publicity with integrity bible." In our time mature trueness to our heart and soul is the necessary foundation of all real spirituality and religion, it's the core of faith more than ever before. Without making an untoward display of it--which would ring untrue for her--Susan has written, in this sense, an authentically sacred text on how to make a true personal and creative ritual of the spirit in bringing our hearts and our messages to the world.
There's that word "real" again. Susan's ear and eye for emotional realness, for how ordinary-human we all are no matter how famous, admired, accomplished, and remarkable, pervades the whole book. It helps us approach the often intimidating prospect of publicizing ourselves with at least one foot always firmly on the ground and the other moving straight forward at a sustainable pace--or, whenever it's necessary to pause and take a breath, able to come back to rest on the material and psychic earth right underneath us.
Quite a number of other men have commented on how the book speaks so directly to us too. I agree, and wish to add that I think that's entirely deliberate on the author's part. I hear Susan Harrow saying to everyone, and certainly to men, "If you want to know how to speak both literally to women in the marketplace--and the worlds of publicity, journalism, and PR--and also to 'the Feminine' principle that no one can any longer afford to fail to take into account in any of our undertakings in life, then don't just do the things I urge you to do in this book in your publicity efforts. All that is important, absolutely. But if you really want to get underneath the content and into the context I'm teaching you, then continuallly take a step back and see how I am myself doing exactly the things I'm urging you to do. Study how I frame my communications to you, how carefully and gently I take all of your possible feelings, fears, reactions, and concerns into account, much as I'm urging you to do with everyone in the world of publicity with whom you wish to communicate."
If I'm at all mishearing you, Susan, I do apologize. But I'm delighted to get this message in any case. You've written a most practical approach to a key project in the life-work I call, in one of my own book titles, "Healing the Spirit/Matter Split." I intend to follow your precepts faithfully in every sense of the word and to recommend your good news far and wide. Thank you! --
I highly recommend this book for men, too........2006-08-12
"Although Susan Harrow's book, Sell Yourself Without Selling Your Soul, has a subtitle that calls the book "a woman's guide," I highly recommend it for men, too. If you have a message that you want to spread to the masses, Harrow teaches you everything you need to know about publicity in full detail. Both the beginner and the experienced will benefit. I wish more authors read her book before contacting my magazine. They would certainly increase their chances of getting reviewed."
~ Bob Olson, OfSpirit.com Magazine editor
A Must Read for Men, too!.......2006-07-31
The title is a bit misleading in that this book is not solely for women. The author may have initially intended it for women, but this book is for everyone! The author's caring and compassion and her obvious intelligence and spirit come through in a way that makes the reader know that there is truth and solid application in it.
Read it, learn from it, apply it, and benefit from it. It's that simple.
Sell Yourself to Yourself --- Then The Public.......2006-06-17
In "Sell Yourself Without Selling Your Soul," Susan Harrow puts a label on why many resist publicity.
Many people think that promoting themselves, their business, or their cause ranks up there with [...] bragging or begging.
Recognizing the desire for fame, fortune and the fear that is getting in the way of aspiring celebrities, Ms. Harrow walks readers through the process of being an equal to all publicists, marketing experts and event planners.
This book is the best book that I've read on how to simultaneously be committed to what you have to share with the public; how to create a public persona for yourself; and how to create an ongoing demand for what you represent.
What makes this book great is that it begins by teaching readers to know who they are, and to honor themselves first.
With your personal integrity always in tact, the journey towards publicity that gets your name, product, service or cause to the top of the list requires a methodical awareness of how to communicate, in print, on the phone, in person, on air, and afterwards with the media. You must show that you know and appreciate the rules, while you honor your own rules.
For example, does your press release show the media in 350 words why you, your product or service deserves immediate media coverage?
For television and radio coverage, does your pitch letter explain why you, your service, or your product is the answer to an important issue that impacts a specific group of people?
Before you call the media to pitch your newsworthy idea, have you narrowed what you anticpate saying, down to 10 seconds? Have you verbalized this out loud, in front of your mirror? Do you know that greeting a media member on the phone is different from greeting someone from other professions?
Is there a cause that you actively support? What miss-understood, or under-represented group can you be a voice for?
Have you asked your clients why they have chosen you?
Have you prepared a list of questions and answers that help your interviewer cover what will make you look or sound great? Have you written out questions and answers related your your weaknesses?
This is an excellent tool - no matter what your profession.

Book Description
This volume, part of Greenwood's continuing series of Bio-Bibliographies in Music, provides a concise bibliographic guide to the life and career of Otto Luening. While the music of this American composer, educator, conductor, and flutist has been performed throughout the northeastern United States, his work has received little attention outside of this region. With its extensive treatment of his life and career, this book will help to bring Luening's important compositions and his contributions to American music to the attention of a much wider audience. Ralph Hartsock divides Luening's work into four main sections, each covering a specific aspect of Luening's career. The volume begins with a brief biography of the subject and is followed by a complete listing of Luening's works and performances through 1989. Prepared with the assistance of Luening himself, this section arranges its information in chronological order, and includes basic bibliographical data as well as information on the premiere of each piece and selected performances. A comprehensive discography, arranged alphabetically by title, cites both commercially produced and selected privately released recordings. Also included is a pair of annotated bibliographies, covering the years from 1921 to 1989. One contains citations of material written by Luening, while the other details the hundreds of articles written about him. The work concludes with a pair of appendixes that catalog Luening's compositions alphabetically by title and according to genre. This work will be a valuable reference source for courses in contemporary music and American music, and a worthwhile addition to the collections of public, college, and university libraries.

Readable & Interesting, but flawed.......2007-06-28
This is a very readable look at Jews in America in the late 1980's. Author Ze'Ef Chavets grew up in Suburban Detroit, moved to Israel, then returned two decades later to interview a cross section of Jewish people in the USA. We hear from religious Jews, secularists, poor Jews, holocaust survivors, Jewish converts, those who married outside the faith, etc. Their opinions range widely, as one would expect from other ethnic groups. I enjoyed reading about the once-strong presence in certain Southern towns, the various and disputing Chasidic sects, and the Jewish singles weekend in the Catskills of New York. Chavets lets his subjects open up, and adds his own views as well. There are many spoken words about culture, assimilation, intermarriage, and life in the USA, but the author missed some things too. Some U.S. cities go unheard from, as do Jews that dislike Israel's treatment of Palestinians, and those that no longer worship in disgust over the holocaust. Also, the book's questionable title refers to Jews as members of a tribe - so do some anti-Semites. This is an interesting and often humorous book, but it has some flaws.
Cheapest Tour of "Jewish America" Available.......2003-01-28
Zev's wit truly comes through in his travels through Jewish Americana. He finds the most intriguing stories to report, from the zaniest to the unbelievable. This is a must read.
Awesome.......1998-06-03
great book. Zev Chafets takes the reader on a tour of small-town Jewish America.

Skewed Facts with Little Heart.......2004-06-10
The only value in Laurence J. Hogans book the Osage Indian Murders is in giving some dates and settings in an otherwise forgotten or ignored chapter in America's history. As an Osage, the book also keeps grandma's stories of how thing actually happened fresh and in mind, other than that it is of little or no value. Mr. Hogan in his, almost jubilant, heralding of the F.B.I. fails to mention that they had to be begged numerous times to investigate the murders that where in their jurisdiction or that the tribe finally had to pay them $3,000,000.00 to do a "shoddy" investigation or furthermore how the F.B.I. records contain page after page of blacked out sheets that protected many criminals and murders from public scrutiny for the crimes they committed against the Osages. In short the book seems to be more of a white wash of the F.B.I.'s handling of the case than anything else. Moreover the book is simply poorly written, you learn nothing about the victims other than stereotypes and cliches of dumb & drunk indians. The book zooms way past racially offensive right out of the gate. The book seems to be nothing more than a simple work of fiction, based on dusty F.B.I. files, to make a buck. The book most certainly has little historical value but does, however, serve as handy reference tool if you know the truth. Had Mr. Hogan done any real research he would have found, rather than the "small gang" of "desperate men" responsible for a few murders and swindles, the murders & swindles were far more wide spread, common, accepted, intriguing & darker, than his work of fiction could ever create.
Guns Put The Roar in the Roaring 20s.......2003-01-29
I half expected ghosts to step out of "The Osage Indian Murders." The book is that dry, that dusty. Yet from the author's chapter-and-verse narrative and bare-bones prose comes a haunting look back at a lawless time and place.
In 1870 Congress forced the Osages to sell their lands in Kansas and buy lands from the Cherokees in what was then Oklahoma Territory. The price quoted was 25 cents an acre. When the Osages hove into sight, of course, the Cherokees upped the price to 70 cents an acre. It was a seller's market.
Who could know that the "poor grave" (as the Osages called the new reservation) would start gushing oil in 1897? The real tragedy of things to come was these once-proud Plains warriors had never wanted money. They wanted to hunt buffalo, plant a few field crops and steal horses -- a special passion of the Plains Indians.
But the oil flowed, the Osages spent money with both hands and the vultures circled. One way for a white thief to get his hands on Osage money was to marry an Osage woman, have her killed and inherit her headrights. There was always someone willing to pull the trigger -- a shiftless hanger-on or an outlaw hiding in the woods of Osage County.
This, then, was the setting for a string of Osage Indian murders that terrorized both Indians and whites. In 1923, the FBI was called in. Agents worked undercover for three years, turning over one rock at a time to put their case together. Trials began in 1926 and eventually several life sentences were handed down.
Author Lawrence J. Hogan -- a former FBI agent and former U.S. congressman -- did voluminous research for this book. He quotes from original documents, interviews and confessions, and organized an interesting bibliography.
Old black and white photos of Indians and outlaws, murder scenes and city streets evoke the time and place in ways that words never can. The people in the photos bring the story to life. They look straight out of the page and their eyes speak volumes.
After a while it sinks in: They were real people, and they really did those things.

Very good...but not great.......1999-09-09
A pretty good book. The author had a great story to begin with....it would make an excellent motion picture. However, I thought it had a few shortcomings. The absence of an Osage perspective on the whole ordeal was a major flaw. Surely, Hogan could have found some documents from tribal members who experienced the "Reign of Terror" or interviewed the few remaining Osage members who lived through this period. Also, as a Native American, I thought the use of "Squaw" and "Squaw Man" was gratuitous and offensive. Furthermore, the jumping around from case to case was confusing at times. Nonetheless, I have recommended the book to many friends. As a person who works with the Osage Tribe, I found his account consistent with my knowledge of the "Reign of Terror" that I have accumulated through many meetings with tribal leaders and elders in Pawhuska. I was also pleased that he included an accurate, though brief, tribal history section at the beginning of the book. Furthermore, the author was successful in giving the reader a adequate sense of the setting in Osage County during the 1920s- a place replete with scoundrels, bootleggers and con men. Additionally, I was very pleased with his writing style. Often times when a "true crime" story is being told, the book is bogged down with picayune details of court proceedings. However, Hogan was able to offer a succinct, yet comprehensive account of the trial involving the Osage Indian Murders.
The TRUE story??? Not by a long shot!.......1999-07-30
How can the author claim to write the "true story" of the Osage murders without citing ANY research documentation whatsoever? Obviously, Hogan did not interview any Real Osages, nor has he visited the Osage Museum or the Whitehair Memorial. This book is yet another attempt by a white person to recreate Osage history from his own perspective and call it factual. And, as far as selling "thousands of copies" of the book, well, that does not establish its veracity. As an academician, I cannot endorse this book. No research, no interviews, no inclusion of Real Osage accounts = no true story. Finally, I take exception to the publisher's attack on the only other person who wrote a review similar to mine. A review should be just that--an opinion of a text's quality (or in this case, failure). This book does nothing but perpetuate negative stereotypes of Osage Indians. In any case, the subtitle should instead read "One White Man's Fictionalized Account..."
Commenting on the reader from Edmond, OK.......1999-07-20
The reader from Edmond, OK did not like this book, but apparently he is a minority of one among Osage Tribe members. The Osage Tribal museum as well as commerical establishments owned by Osages have sold thousands of copies of "The Osage Indian Murders."
He claims the book is inaccurate historically, but the book was written with access to all of the FBI's files about the case as well as historical material available at the White Hair Memorial near Fairfax, OK, the Osage Tribal museum in Pawhuska, OK, the Tulsa Public Library, the Tulsa world and other sources. The reader objected to the book stating that Baconrind "bellowed," but that is a verbatim quote from a magazine writer who personally interviewed Baconrind. Baconrind's grandson and namesake, incidentally, has bought several copies of the book. If this reader from Edmond, OK has some specifics to back up his objections about inaccuracies, the author and publisher would be pleased to have this information as is stated in the introduction to the book.
Many Osages have purchased multiple copies for relatives and friends without ever objecting to anything in the book.
The author would be pleased to personally hear from this reader if he has any specifics to back up his objections.

Skillful blending of history and fiction set in Savannah........1999-05-25
This is an old book fresh in my memory after twenty years. Moved from Atlanta to the more colorful setting of Savannah, this real-life mystery of the murder of Mary Phagan in 1913 and the historic rise of Coca Cola are blended ficticiously into a satisfying story. It is a tragic description of the outbreak of anti-semitism in Georgia following the strangling of a teenage factory worker, allegedly by her Jewish employer. Savannah itself is the main character, lovingly described by a "Yankee" admirer. This is a great read with a tantilizing twist at the end, well worth rereading especially since the "Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil" phenomenon hit the bookshelves and video stores. In real life, the case led to the conviction of Leo Frank, who was later lynched by the Ku Klux Klan to thwart his life sentence. In fact, this case was the catalyst that brought the Klan back to life in 1915, initially as the Knights of Mary Phagan. As a fifteen year-old, I remember riding the bus to Rich's Department Store in downtown Atlanta. Across the street at the soda fountain, postcards of Leo Frank hanging from an Oak limb were for sale on the revolving rack. That was more than forty years after the lynching.
