Discover Tibet through the eyes of travelers.........2004-10-24
This book presents many true stories of visits to Tibet. Some are funny, some are cautionary, and some are inspiring. They cover many aspects of the countryside including ancient rituals, pilgrimages, searching for the clouded leopard, and, of course, the Dalai Lama. This isn't a political book. I don't think there needs to be two sides to the story..it consists of many stories-all different. It's a great read and nothing more is needed.
A weak book in the series.......2003-03-30
Usually a book from the 'traveler's tale' series will feature a healthy mix of stories of different genre; which enables its reader to understand a nation from many different prospective. However, the stories in this 'Tibet' volume are too politically dominated. I don't think this book present a holistic view on Tibetan culture.

Book Description
Clarence Thomas, the youngest and most controversial member of the Supreme Court, could become the longest-serving justice in history, influencing American law for decades to come. Who is this enigmatic man? And what does he believe in?
Judging Thomas tells the remarkable story of Clarence Thomas's improbable journey from hardscrabble beginnings in the segregated South to the loftiest court in the land. With objectivity and balance, author Ken Foskett chronicles Thomas's contempt for upper-crust blacks who snubbed his uneducated, working-class roots; his flirtation with the priesthood and, later, Black Power; the resentment that fueled his opposition to affirmative action; the conservative beliefs that ultimately led him to the Supreme Court steps; and the inner resilience that propelled him through the doors.
Based on interviews with Thomas himself, fellow justices, family members, and hundreds of friends and associates, Judging Thomas skillfully unravels perhaps the most complex, controversial, and powerful public figure in America today.

Inside the world of a controversial Justice.......2005-12-14
No Supreme Court Nominee's hearings have been more controversial than Clarence Thomas's were. And, we see from this biography, no life has been more interesting on the Supreme Court than Clarence Thomas. From his poor upbringing by his grandfather in rural Georgia, to Yale Law School, to his difficulty in finding a job after graduation to his contentious Supreme Court battle, Thomas's story almost seems ready made for a drama. This book is fascinating, and will make you feel for Justice Thomas. All the pain he has gone through in his life is reflected in Foskett's words. One of the most interesting biographies I have ever read.
Pay no attention to the left-wing wacko reviews...................2005-03-31
such as "For a different view than the first four I see here, November 16, 2004 Reviewer: Felix (Silicon Valley).....see the review by Randall Kennedy for the Washington Post"
Why, Felix? The WP is one of the three worst newspapers in the USA, along with the L.A. Times and the N.Y Times. These "newspapers" are no more than left wing propaganda machines. They proved themselves to be far left during the election. Every day the WP prints whatever they can think up against the President and anyone in the administration, and almost never anything good that is going on in the country, or the good that has been done in Afghanistan, and Iraq. You don't know about the good because the "People's Propaganda" machines will not print it.
Of course, the WP will find, or dream up, or twist, or misinterpret, or tell half-truths and lies about Clarence Thomas. That's what they live for; to tell all the worst things they can dream up about every conservative. Did you see these major newspapers support Clinton's accusers like they supported the lying Anita Hill? Anyone could watch Anita and tell she was a liar; it was all over her face, and was apparent in her demeanor. That woman had one objective, and every left-wing wacko, radical feminist, socialist, communist, and liar on the planet tried to support her false claims that she twisted into ugly lies about innocent events.
These "reviews" are a waste of time. The left-wingers will write bad reviews and say the good ones don't help them. The conservatives will support Thomas, but at least they aren't lying.
Watch what the man does, and how he lives, then judge from what's true, not what's jaded opinion.
I still done know Judge Thomas.......2005-01-08
I was left wanting more. I felt the book was written to achieve a certain number of pages instead of providing me information about Judge Thomas. The book often provides far to much information about the people passing through his life. I was not interested in reading so much informatin about the people who employ him or the people he met on his life journey.
The book did address some of Judge Thomas early social ideas, but the book seem to be written without much input from Judge Thomas. I did not get the sense that I knew Judge Thomas after I completed the book.

A balanced biography of an intriguing man.......2004-09-22
Several years ago, The Weekly Standard ran a cover story calling Clarence Thomas the most powerful conservative in America. He truly was at that time.
Foskett does a fair job stripping away the controversy and polemic to examine the man, his background, and his life. There is obviously the story of Thomas' confirmation to the Supreme Court, and a fair amount of time is devoted to those few weeks in the Justice's life. Far more interesting than that is his life before Washington, and before the political appointments, while he was still growing up under the stern eye of his grandfather, Myers Anderson.
Without understanding the world that incubated Thomas it is impossible to understand why he could view the world and the American judicial system as he does. To understand Clarence Thomas more fully one must understand Myers Anderson, the dominant force in his early years. Foskett accounts for the apartheid caste system of the Jim Crow south that trapped and warped so many people.
Passionate reactions about Thomas will exist for a long, long time. His ideas stand on their own merit. This book truly gives the reader a glimpse at the humanity of a man who thinks for himself and will set the judicial tenor of the court for years to come.

Book Description
In this comprehensive biography, Kendrick Clements examines the brilliant successes as well as the failures of Wilson's public career as professor, president of Princeton University, governor of New Jersey, and president. The best available one-volume biography of our twenty-eighth president. --History
Customer Reviews:
Woodrow Wilson Lite.......2007-03-29
I am reading all the presidential biographies in order and just finished this book.
Overall, I thought it was just "okay." I like my books to be in chronological order. This book was organized loosely chonological, but by topic. It made following the chain of events rather difficult. Also, the auther wrote the dates like this: 29 March 1917. Rather than March 19. That was a stumbling block and a distraction.
This read more like a textbook than a biography, which made it rather flat and dull. He devoted page upon page to the intracacies of war finance, but breezed over and barely mentioned the death of his wife and his debilitating series of strokes in the twilight of his administration.
If I can identify with the subject of a biography and feel as if I KNOW the subject, I can say "this is a great book." And, as corny as it may sound, I feel sad at the end when the president dies. In this book, there could have been several instances where I could have "felt" the book -- when his first wife dies, when he dies, etc. I didn't feel that at any point in the book, which means I didn't get close to Wilson.
If you are reading all the presidential bios like I am, this is a good book to get a general idea of what Wilson was like so you can move onto Warren G Harding. You'll probably need to go back and read the multi-volme bios available on Wilson to really FEEL him or to undertsand the complexities of the events leading up to and including WWI.
Slow Paced and a Bit Disjointed.......2003-03-21
The writing in this book is good, but in places it jumps around in time. It is also slow paced and not light reading. However, it covers Woodrow's life pretty well for a one-book volume.
Mister, we could use a man like Woody again!.......2003-02-13
"God helping her...she can do no other!"
Unlike our current prez, Wilson was no war monger. He earnestly sought peace even as he committed our boys to the 20th centuries first horrific war. This is his story and I highly recommend it.
Don't Forget Woodrow Wilson.......2002-07-22
Kendrick A. Clements "Woodrow Wilson" delivers what it promises -an excellent introductory study of our 28th president - in just 223 pages of text. Some readers may want more intimate details about Wilson and the people in his life; for them there are 11 additional pages of pertinent bibliographical information. Clement's brief book, nevertheless - billed as the 'best available one-volume biography' on Wilson - provides the reader with that essential information that prompts many historians to rank Wilson in the top tier of U.S. presidents. We learn, for example, that Wilson (our only Ph.D. president) was one of just a handful of our truly intellectual presidents - i.e., he loved books and ideas and was a voracious reader of books and a prolific writer of books. He was the son of a Presbyterian minister who'd instilled in him a love of his fellow man and a desire to serve his fellow man. Wilson - like Theodore Roosevelt before him - came to believe that the federal government is an organ that must be involved in helping those unable to help themselves. As president he pushed through legislation that protected workers, women, and children from abuse and exploitaton in the workplace. He believed in the capitalist system and in the prerequisite free market conditions; consequently, he fought against any practices employed by business or industry designed to create monopolies or restrict free competition. As president he felt obligated to be deeply involved in both legislative and executive branch activities - in order to better realize his domestic and foreign affairs goals. Wilson was a decent man with a wide range of significant accomplishments: after acquiring his Ph.D. (political science) at Johns Hopkins University, he distinguished himself in a number of capacities - as a college/university professor, university president (Princeton), governor (New Jersey) and U.S. president (2 terms). While he was in office women got the vote, the Federal Reserve Bank was established, the mechanism for funding government activities was changed (the graduated income tax was adopted to suplement less effective tariff and excise tax revenues). When U.S. entry into World War I became unavoidable, Wilson vowed that the war should end with something positive - namely, with a non-punitive peace (provided for in his '14 Point Plan' for peace)and with the creation of an organization that could prevent world wars in the future (he proposed the League of Nations). Because U.S. congressional opposition was more powerful Wilson failed to achieve these goals - but he did win a Nobel Peace Prize for his efforts. Nevertheless, Wilson was correct in warning the world that a punitive peace would cause serious trouble in the future (aka Adolph Hitler), and he was correct in predicting that the world would eventually be forced to create a collective organization of nations (aka the United Nations) to resolve international disputes and to punish nations who violate international law. We now see that Wilson was also important as the transitional president who helped the United States abandon its 19th Century isolationist positions - and he did his best to push the country into the modern era (20th Century) when it would eventually accept and assume its duties and responsibilities as a leader among nations.
Wilson the peacemaker.......2001-07-31
Woodrow Wilson. Here was a president who put himself in the middle of European power politics in order to achieve the goals he had in mind. This book helps to suggest a man of action and persuasion at a time when most Americans were fed up with affairs that didn't concern them. Woodrow Wilson is regarded with respect, but at the time he was proposig the League of Nations as the answer to the world's problems, he was criticized left and right. We now know that his policies for peace and security were right, and if Wilson was president today, we could be made certain that the world would be at peace. This book, which was written in such a way as to paint a picture of a daring, courageous president, is by far one of the better books on Wilson that I have ever read. I would recommend this account of our 28th president to both the serious student of American Presidential History, and also to the laymen reader. This book is more of an outline of alreay well-known facts, and serves as an introduction into the life of one of our country's greatest presidents.

Reconsidering Wilson.......2005-09-04
Kraig effectively resuscitates Wilson, debunking the myth of him as a misty-eyed idealist and revealing him to be an effective orator who moved the public with his words. One problem with tracing cause-and-effect in the social world is that sometimes good strategy and heroic effort produce unsatisfactory results, making the effort seem a misguided failure. Kraig shows how Wilson developed a grand rhetorical strategy for capturing the public's imagination and leading a reluctant, isolationist public into the global age. After reading Kraig's book, you'll start to wonder just what is possible in the modern world. Perhaps the age of oratory is not dead, but dormant. Imagine what Wilson could have done with Pearl Harbor or 9/11.

Book Description
This publication is a collection of forty-eight reflections which explore and chronicle the author's ongoing, personal healing journey following a diagnosis of breast cancer. Each set of reflections includes prose, poetry and affirmation. The book is written in such a manner that it can be used for collective or individual reflection. Illustrations by Shauna Barss are sprinkled throughout. The foreword is written by Catherine Ripplinger Fenwick, author of 'Healing with Humour: A Laughter First Aid Kit' and 'Telling My Sister's Story'. The cover features a Courtney Milne photograph and cover design by Ed Pas.
The book honours and promotes harmony amongst a variety of healing practices and belief systems. It also endeavors to enhance awareness of the healing process itself. Strong themes of healing within relationship, finding voice, relinquishing our illusion of control, and striving for serenity are explored. The account celebrates the centrality of spiritual guidance in finding, to whatever degree possible, healing within all realms of our being. These realms include the physical, mental, emotional and spiritual. The collection offers many examples of imagery, visualization, meditation, and prayer created to connect with personal sources of guidance and inspiration.
The book addresses a number of audiences including those experiencing health and healing challenges, their significant others, and the professionals who serve them. Given the holistic focus of the book, these professionals span a wide range of disciplines throughout the mainstream, complementary and spiritual care communities.
The author's personal and professional background has allowed her to write in an intimate and inclusive way which will appeal to people from diverse backgrounds in relation to age, gender, education, culture and spirituality. While the reflections center around the experience of healing, anyone seeking personal or spiritual growth may relate to them.
