an area of much neglected Scottish history.......2003-07-03
The period of Scotland's History 1000-1400 is my favourite, but though a lot has been written about Wallace, Bruce and the struggles of Scotland to remain free from England, not a lot of attention has been paid to the seaboard of Scotland - the Hebrides, Agryll and the Isle of Man. During this central Middle Ages, the struggle for control of the area was complex, but little focus has been done in trying to sort out the problems of the area or how they played a roll in Scottish History.
Sometimes it takes an outlander to eye the period with a less prejudiced eye. And McDonald, an instructor at the School of Continuing Studies at the University of Toronto and has taught at several Canadian Universities, turns that eye to the area where no study has been published for the last 50 years. The end result, is a truly rounded view of the history of the Isles from 1100-1340s. McDonald's style is very readable, presenting the Rising of the mighty Somerled, to his descendant, John MacDonald, the first Lord of the Isles. He shows the changing political mix of the MacDougalls, MacDonalds and MacRuairis, how their internal Clan struggles affected or were affected by Scotland's struggle for freedom, how Norway was a big player the affairs. He also addresses the Churches, the Castles that are a constant reminder of these people.
A wonderful book for people wishing to know about the Medieval Period of Scotland's Isles.

The information seems to be quite complete and is well presented. The book also has its lighter side. Good value for the visitor lucky enough to get to this part of Scotland.

Book Description
This is the first comprehensive treatment of Johnson and Boswell in relation to Scotland, as revealed in their accounts of their trip to the Hebrides in 1773, the Journey to the Western Islands and the Journal of a Tour to the Hebrides. Locating the Scottish journey both within the context of travel writing in the decade of Cook's Pacific voyages, and in an intellectual, cultural, and literary context, Pat Rogers's new interpretation of the writers' famous accounts describes the `Grand Detour' which the travellers made in opposition to the standard Grand Tour expectations. Johnson and Boswell: The Transit of Caledonia suggests a reason why Johnson undertook his long-planned visit in old age, and explores the relation between his Journey and the letters he wrote to Hester Thrale. Boswell's complex motives in making the tour are also explored, including his divided views concerning his Scottish identity, and his desire at a concealed level to replay the heroic venture of Prince Charles Edward thirty years before. Setting the journey in the context of anti-Scottish feeling in the period, the book relates the themes and motives of the two narratives to the background of the Scottish Enlightenment on such issues as emigration and primitivism, and offers fresh reading of the major survey by Johnson and Boswell of Scotland after the Jacobite risings.

Book Description
Comparative Income Tax Deferral examines the benefits achieved by deferring income or accelerating deductions, with reference to the income tax systems of the United States and Japan. The United States has been at the forefront of recognising the time value of money benefit of tax deferral and of devising methods to prevent tax deferral. Japan, on the other hand, is only gradually placing greater emphasis on tax deferral issues, in light of the activities of foreign companies, and the constant introduction of new financial products which take advantage of the tax deferral allowed under Japanese income tax rules. The book starts with a detailed discussion of the 1948 Cary Brown model and its various interpretations, an understanding of which is key to any analysis of tax deferral issues. The author goes on to provide a comparative analysis of the different tax deferral patterns that can arise under the United States and Japanese income tax systems, and of methods introduced by the United States to eliminate the tax deferral benefit. A history and overview of the Japanese income tax system is included in the appendix. Principles of tax deferral and time value of money are crucial in an era of globalisation in commerce and finance. They cut across all areas of taxation and are particularly important in the context of taxation of derivatives and other financial instruments. Comparative Income Tax Deferral is an important addition to the literature in this field and will be of great interest to tax and business law practitioners, investment bankers and financial planners.

A Must Have for Cross Border Tax Planning with Japan.......2002-01-15
The insight into the Japanese tax system, Japan's view of deferral, and where planning opportunities lie is phenomenal! For anyone investing in Japan, I would highly recommend that you spend some time with this book and see if it doesn't spark some creative thoughts for your clients.

Book Description
Widely acclaimed as a consultant's consultant, Gerald M. Weinberg builds on his perennial best-seller The Secrets of Consulting with all-new laws, rules, and principles. You'll learn how to fight burnout, stay curious, understand your clients, negotiate effectively, and much, much more.
Consultants need more than technical skillsthey need self-awareness and a strong set of personal abilities. Weinberg helps computer consultants identify and strengthen each aspect of their performance using a "consultant's tool kit" of seventeen memorable symbols. He devotes a chapter to each of these symbolic tools, from The Wisdom Box to The Fish-Eye Lens to The Oxygen Mask.
Customer Reviews:
Not as good as the first Secrets, but still contains valuable advice.......2007-10-14
Several years ago, I read the original Secrets of Consulting by the same author, Gerald Weinberg (see my review for that book). After reading some of the other reviews here for More Secrets of Consulting, I must say that I concur with much of the opinion written. The original Secrets is a classic work - there simply is no other consulting book in the marketplace of this genre, and not only is the information presented in that work very useful, it is very entertaining as well. Unlike the original Secrets, which presents a philosophy of consulting, More Secrets makes an attempt to present a number of consulting tools within tangible categories that consist of six self-esteem tools by family therapist Virginia Satir as well as another ten tools that Weinberg created himself. As a general rule, I like the tools that both Satir and Weinberg offer in this book. I like how Weinberg ties together the Wisdom Box and the Golden Key, for instance. Among my least favorite of the tools presented is the Courage Stick and the the Egg, the Carabiner, and the Feather. The last three of these least-favorites are presented hurriedly in one chapter, toward the end of the book, and I cannot help to wonder whether he was pressed for time as he began wrapping up his writing. The Courage Stick chapter is bizarre - Weinberg actually seems to be recommending to readers that they carry physical objects, apparently similar to good luck charms, to help individuals build up courage during the more difficult portions of consulting engagements. Strange. If the reader disregards these two chapters, however, they will find that many of the rules and principles which Gerald presents here are much in line with the original Secrets - not nearly as entertaining, but still worth reading. Some of my favorites are:
*Cary's Crap Caution: "Anything not worth doing is not worth doing right."
*The Mercenary Maxim: "One of the best ways to lose lots of money is to do something only for the money."
*Dani's Decider: "When you stop learning new things, it's time to move on."
*The Railroad Counter-Paradox: "When service is too good, the suppliers may never hear about it, and thus they drop the service."
*LeGuin's Law: "When action grows unprofitable, gather information. When information grows unprofitable, sleep."
*The Detective's Fourth Rule: "If you can't understand where the questions are coming from, they're probably coming from an agenda someone doesn't want you to know about."
*The Parallel Paradox: "If you're too much like your clients, you don't attract them; if you're too different, you frighten them away."
*Knaomi's Knowledge Knockout: "Experience is not just the best teacher, it's the only teacher. Experience may be the only teacher, but it doesn't necessarily teach anything."
Of course, many of the rules and principles are just Weinberg opinion. Immanuel Kant, the great German philosopher, for instance, said that "experience teaches nothing without theory, but theory without experience is mere intellectual play". Because I consider this book to be an extension to the original Secrets, I strongly recommend that these books be read in succession. Several other reviewers correctly note that Weinberg cites some of his other works in More Secrets. Although this can be seen as a bit of self-promotion (even a large portion of the bibliography for More Secrets consists of Weinberg writings), most of these citations are to the original Secrets because of the heavy tie between the two books, and I consider this facet of the book reasonable.
surprising, and still fantastic.......2007-02-14
On a superficial level, one might say that this book is more about the principles of self-esteem than more "tips and tricks" on giving advice / being a consultant. However, after I thought about this for a while, I would have to agree with Mr. Weinberg that the principles of self-esteem really are the secret to being a good advice giver. This wasn't exactly what I was expecting in this book, but it doesn't diminish the importance or power of the material. Just buy this book and improve your life. I add Mr. Weinberg to a short list of those authors and persons in my life that have made me a better person and provided some direction to the chaos of the universe. That may sound overly dramatic, but for me it's true. Thanks, Gerald!
Better for independent consultants, .......2006-05-10
If you have ever attended one of my presentations, you know that frequently I recommend Gerald (Jerry) Weinberg's The Secrets of Consulting, published in 1985. I've even commented that I've had to purchase half a dozen copies of it because I lend it out and it never comes back. I recommended this book to everyone, even non-consultants because the subtitle, The Guide to Giving and Receiving Advice Successfully, is a valuable topic no matter how you earn your money.
In 2002, Weinberg published More Secrets of Consulting: The Consultant's Toolkit. This is a sort of sequel to the original volume, with more of a focus on traditional consulting over general advice giving tips. Traditionally, sequels don't do as well as first releases, and Weinberg addresses this starting on the first page of the book:
[When I mentioned to my pal Michelle that I was writing a sequel to The Secrets of Consulting, she shook her head in disbelief. "Why don't you quit while you are ahead. Don't you believe your own preaching? What about The Law of Raspberry Jam?"1
Michelle was referring to the law that describes how any Great Message gets diluted when carried too far: the wider you spread it, the thinner it gets."]
From there, Jerry goes on to say that he is writing this book because the first one earned more dollars for consultants who read it, perhaps $10,000 per year, in Michelle's case. I believe that my own consulting revenue had increased by at least that much, maybe twice or three times that, since I first read The Secrets of Consulting. Not because I learned how to put more tricky language into my contracts, but because I learned how make my services more valuable to my clients.
The big question, though, is whether this sequel will have the same effect of making me more valuable to my clients.
You may have read one of Jerry's books on system thinking, or even the Psychology of Computer Programming. If you have read his later works, you'd know that Jerry has been working on the softer sides of systems, especially through his Amplifying Your Effectiveness work. This work is based on Virginia Satir's writings and More Secrets builds upon Satir's Self Esteem Toolkit:
The Wisdom Box
The Golden Key
The Courage Stick
The Wishing Wand
The Detective Hat
The Yes/No Medallion
Plus Jerry's additions:
The Heart
The Mirror
The Telescope
The Fish-Eye Lens
The Gyroscope
The Egg
The Carabiner
The Feather
The Hourglass
The Oxygen Mask
For each of these tools, Weinberg explains how it can help, what happens when it isn't used properly, and what lessons learned he's collected about why they are important parts of a consultant's toolkit.
If you you were wondering about the footnote in the quote above, Weinberg make frequent use of footnotes to his other writings, especially references to the original Secrets. While I definitely do not see these as ads for his other works, I did find them a bit distracting.
This volume of Secrets focuses inward, on a consultant's inner feelings, beliefs, and behaviors much more than the first work. Some readers, especially those looking for a quick fix, may not find this work as valuable as others might. However, everything that Weinberg writes is part of your toolkit, even if you've never used it.
I recommend this work for those working in a consulting-like role, especially independent consultants who have fewer resources available to them than those working in large firms. I can also recommend this to non-consultant looking for help in working with others. However, if you need to choose between The Secrets and More Secrets, go for the first one.
Very good, but a harder read than "Secrets".......2004-03-09
The original "Secrets of Consulting" is probably one of the most important books in my collection, and I had great expectations of this follow-up volume. However, where the first book focuses outwards, largely on what a consultant does, the second book focuses in, much more on what a consultant is, and to my mind makes much less comfortable reading.
Don't get me wrong. This is not in any way a bad book: it's still as well written and humorous as Weinberg's other books, and chock full of amusing stories and "laws" derived from them. Anyone involved in consulting of any sort will still get a great deal out of it. But if, like many men, you're uncomfortable talking and reading about "feelings" you may find this less easy to read.
The "Consultant's Tool Kit" of the subtitle is actually a complex metaphor. Each component of the toolkit is a metaphor for a certain aspect of your personality and personal capabilities. For example, the wishing wand is a metaphor for understanding, and being able to ask for, what you want from a professional relationship. The chapter around this metaphor first explores why most people either don't know what they want or are unable to express it, and suggests ways to make your wishes clearer. It places this in a professional context, contract negotiation, and emphasises how the personal ability to express and value your wishes will help you negotiate more successfully.
In a similar way other chapters focus on developing wisdom and new knowledge, managing time and information, being courageous with your decisions, learning how to say yes and no, understanding why you and others are in the current situation, and keeping yourself in balance, avoiding burnout and other self-destructive conditions.
These are all important not only to consultants, but to anyone trying to establish a more satisfying professional or personal life by managing problems, by self-improvement and by better handling their relationships to other people.
Weinberg could have presented much of this material in a style much closer to the earlier book, but instead chose a more introspective approach which demands a greater investment on the part of the reader. Only time will tell how this investment is repaid, but I believe it will be for me.
Problem solving techniques for consultants.......2003-03-04
If you've ever had problems in an engagement, and you've already read Secrets, read this too. Weinberg includes numerous know-yourself ideas to become a better consultant.
A common consulting mistake is to spend time on work that shouldn't be done at all, or that the the client doesn't want or doesn't value. But, it's sometimes difficult to detect those problems. Two of the tools, the Wisdom Box and the Mirror can help you address these problems.
The WIsdom Box helps you determine when you shouldn't bother doing the work. As Weinberg says, "Anything I shouldn't be doing, I shouldn't be doing. Period." Easier said than done sometimes. Weinberg helps you detect when your Wisdom Box is telling you something that you otherwise can't hear -- when you're entering a situation you shouldn't even start.
Sometimes, clients engage us to perform work they don't value. In that case, the Mirror is an asset. I used the mirror once when I was working with a management team who didn't value testing, but knew that the parent company would ask them about the testing. Instead of taking on testing for the project, I committed to help with project planning, set up testing, and look for a permanent test manager who could work the day-to-day issues. If they couldn't commit to the planning and setup work, they wouldn't actually hire anyone, but my consulting job would be complete.
With the Mirror, you completely commit to part of the project, and provide feedback to the company. You have a chance to see how the project proceeds, and if either you or the client doesn't like where you're going, you stop.
I found the patterns of consultant reactions and Weinberg's tools and suggestions for dealing with those reactions helpful. You will too.

GREAT READ!.......2006-02-17
Hyveth's story was a written account of encouragement and hope for those of us who feel helpless and unloved. She shows the reader that GOD loves us no matter what we've done or where we've been.
Wonderful testimony to the Lord's power.......2002-02-08
I attended a women's retreat this past Sabbath where Pastor Hyveth Williams was the keynote speaker, and I purchased this book. After reading it, I came away with a renewed spirit and desire to learn to be silent and listen for God's instruction in my own life. This book is a testimony to God's healing power, and the love and care that He has for each of His children. I highly recommend this book to those who may need some encouragement in their Christian walk. Pastor Williams is a very dynamic speaker and has also been given the gift to share her story in a way that touches hearts. She is honest in sharing her difficult experiences within her own denomination in being taken seriously and accepted as a minister of God because she is a woman. As an Adventist, I can identify with what she says, and I also agree with her that our denomination should not be judged negatively as a whole because of negative members who are caught up in legalism; there are no perfect denominations. I never got the sense of being bound by rules and regulations as I read her book, and I agree that each individual can find freedom in Jesus Christ. Christ is a God of freedom and joy, not regulations and legalism. Read the book; you won't be sorry.
growing, healing, witnessing.......2000-09-09
In this autobiographical work, she traces her growth from a promiscuous, addictive, abusive childhood to her current position as Adventist minister. She tells of the miraculous ways in which she has been guided and healed through the years and how she had to fight tooth and nail against sexism, racism and bigotry in her own church to reach her current popular status. If you are a current or would be Adventist, the book will probably be a useful affirmation of faith, but for the average reader the interesting and absorbing beginning will probably trail off into what I find to be a mediocre preachy ending. Hyeth is obviously a bright dynamic woman who has seen a much bigger slice of life than most of us and who conveys a convincing sense of being guided by unseen hands to reach out and heal herself and many of those around her. Many people seem to need the structure of a limiting faith to get a handle on their life and this book illustrates that religionist process in action for herself and her parish.
Book Description
In The Miracle of the Seventh Day, the internationally renowned and highly acclaimed Rabbi Adin Steinsaltz offers the definitive explanation of the miraculous potential of the Sabbath— what it means, and how it can be observed at home with your family. Much like the Haggadah, the guide to the Passover seder, with its step-by-step directions and explanations, this book provides a simple but complete guide to the spiritual content and ritual practice of the seventh day in the home, including commentary on every appropriate observance, ritual, prayer, and song. The book is both an introduction and a program for observing the Sabbath at home, focused on the core intention and goal of this weekly spiritual renewal.

People teens admire talk about God.......2007-04-13
Author Amy Hammond Hagberg wanted to help teens--her own and others--answer questions about God, including the big question: "How do you know he's real?"
Hagberg wrote to sports stars, recording artists and other celebrities, asking them to reflect on their life experiences and share how the reality of God was making a difference to them personally and professionally. The responses she received--from NBA players, Christian musicians, 'American Idol' contestants and others--are honest, revealing, and often compelling.
The resulting book is a collection of celebrity essays: mini-bios that focus on the reality of God in the midst of media attention, success and failure, and broken relationships. Contributors include Dwight Howard of the Orlando Magic basketball team, quarterback David Carr of the Houston Texans, and popular Christian recording artist Clay Crosse.
Some of the interviews are especially helpful for Hagberg's original target readers: teens. Among these, Chrissy Conway of 'Zoe Girl' talks about her parents' divorce, the party scene, and the twists and turns along her personal career path in ways that connect with teens and with anyone who has ever considered attempting a career in music.
Hagberg is a gifted and skilled writer who keeps readers turning the pages as she unpacks celebrity affirmations of the presence of God in their lives. A great gift book for readers from teens through Gen X, but the stories here will interest readers of any age!
Note: Reviewer Dr. David Frisbie is an author and Executive Director of The Center for Marriage & Family Studies in Del Mar, California.
Armchair Interviews says: Anything that can help teens understand their role in living a good life is good.
Celebrities share their faith.......2007-03-11
This is an ideal book to give to people who have questions about becoming a Christian, and who love sports and music celebrities.
44 extreme sports and music celebrities tell their stories in this book, from Jonny Lang (recording artist), to Barlow Girl (rock group), Kimiko Soldati (Olympic diving), CJ Hobgood (surfer), Dwight Howard (NBA player, Orlando Magic), Mick Hannah (downhill mountain bike racer), Jimmie McGuire (professional motocross rider) and more.
They share hard times they faced, how they became Christians and how their paths are more joyful due to their faith. Being a Green Bay Packer fan I turned to Kabeer Gbaja-Biamila's story of growing up in South Central Los Angeles with a tough background, a Muslim dad and a Christian mom, and how his becoming a Christian led to his current happy family life and NFL career. Christian Hosoi, professional skateboarder, after serious drug problems, is now leading a skateboarding ministry.
The two page "God's Road Map" at the end of each celebrity's story contains perceptive questions and Scriptures. Sports and music lovers will enjoy this book, and it can even be a "past watchful dragons book" that will steer doubting people on a new clear path.
god unplugged.......2007-02-02
God Unplugged by Ammy Hagberg was very interesting. It is 403 pages long and was published in 2006 by Destiny Image. In the story top athletes, musicians, and also stars tell how god helped them get where they wanted to be and changed their lives.
In the story there were 44 celebrity reflections on true life experiences with god. Many of these celebrities have been extremely low in their lives and god has pulled them out of them. Also in some cases they have had no luck in there lives and finally achieved their goals after they gave there lives god. All of these people believe that god has either given them opportunities or even the strength to work through where they were to get to where they want to be.
I thought that this was a good book. I enjoyed reading it and seeing how god has changed all of these people's lives. The strengths of this book are that it has top named celebrities that people actually want to read about. The weakness of this book is that there is nothing to find out nest so you don't have a reason to keep reading. I did like how god actually gave them the strength to continue and succeed in life. The writing was very boring to me, but I liked the idea.
The book gave a lasting effect on me because I have a saint Christopher necklace that my grandma gave to me before she passed away and that keeps me safe when I race motorcross. So, I think that god has a great power on us. I would recommend this book, it will make you think.
After reading this, you certainly KNOW he is real!.......2007-01-25
Truly, this, and the book before this, are really awesome books!
** Why?
Because they give some very good insights into other peoples way to God. Not only that, if you don't know the Bible inside and out (and even if you do, actually!), there are quotations from the Bible explaining the why and hows, depending on the story of the person interviewed.
All this, with Amy Hagbergs very nice way of writing (down to earth serious mixed with a nice blend of humor) makes this book a pleasure to read!
Personally, I strongly recommend this book to everyone. It might be those who Seek, or those who have found, it doesn't matter, in my opinion! :)
Fantastic book!.......2007-01-24
What a great book! Amy Hagberg has gathered some of today's biggest sports and music celebs to talk about how they know God is real. This book is in stark contrast to so many of today's depressing, tragedy-focused headlines. And the list of celebrities is impressive! [...]

Book Description
Winter 1943. A Nazi concentration camp in Poland. A fifteen-year-old Jewish boy stands naked, shivering at the edge of a deep ditch. He and several other prisoners have been marked for death by the psychopathic camp commandant. Guards, holding machine guns, accompanied by snarling dogs, wait for the command to fire. "My mind refused to comprehend the reality of what was happening ... They were going to shoot me and burn me. I thought of my loved ones, and that soon I would be joining them...My teeth chattered so hard that my gums hurt...I reached a state of mind where I just wanted, with all my being, to get it over with....Many of the condemned prayed aloud, others looked straight ahead without seeing...One of the guards pushed me into the hole. The guards opened fire and I blanked out." More than half a century later, Jorge Klainman, who lost his family in The Holocaust, vividly depicts the horror of life, and death, in a series of Nazi camps. Yet his story is also an inspiring tribute to the resiliency of the human spirit. In many ways, it epitomizes the triumph of the Jewish people who-despite the Holocaust-have prevailed. "Many people intervened, at enormous risk to themselves, so that I could write this testimony. To me, it means that, despite everything, I have to continue believing in people, and not all is lost."
The front cover shows the certificate delivered by the U.S. military to Israel (Srulek) Klainman at Ebensee Concentration Camp on the day of his liberation, May 5, 1945. The back cover is a photo of the author in the year 2000, age 72.

Gripping, breathtaking.......2001-04-01
I receive many books for review; thus, when I opened Jorge Klainman's The Seventh Miracle I planned to skim through it, but I couldn't;it grabbed me from the start...Klainman relates this tale of horror like a born storyteller; he writes with the great economy and simplicity of on who has lived it, which creates in the reader a high degree of empathy...His story is both heroic and sad, and yet (I can't believe that I am writing this) it also has moments of humor. The saddest part of this incredible story is that his brother Moniek, who had managed to survive the Holocaust, should die shortly afterwards from complications of appendicitis, before Klainman could be reunited with him. Highly recommended reading, gripping, breathtaking until the very end. -- Mario Wainstain, Aurora Weekly, Tel Aviv.
Triumph of the human spirit.......2001-04-01
It is with deep emotion that I read The Seventh Miracle. To think that a young boy, bereaved of all his family, had to experience what he did; to know that he did not share his horrible experiences with his family or friends for decades--so deeply were they engraved in him; and to understand that they burst out with full force after having spent 50 years in Argentina--this is what the reader of this unique book is requested to do. He has undergone such tortures, physically and emotionally; he spent his boyhood in ghettos and camps--and still he remained an optimist, a man of values and hope. I believe the book should reach a many hands as possible, in order to spread this story of the triumph of the Jewish spirit-- ....

God's Soviet Miracles.......2005-10-30
I have read this book and just returned from Russia doing some work at this school. This is an excellent book of how God performs miracles! I can't say enough good about it. If you need a boost in your spiritual life, this is a great book to read! The book is well written by the man who was instrumental in getting the school started and it is amazing to read his experience and see his unfailing faith that God had a way to work things out. I loved the book! I love the school and I can't wait to go back!
