Suitable for information only - not for a travel guide.......2006-08-23

I purchased this book as a travel guide however it is more suited for those arm-chair readers. Having just returned from this region on an Artic cruise, many of the landings on my itinerary are not covered in this book. And many of the destinations in this book are rarely visited so I would not recommend this book as a travel guide to Svalbard. You will find more useful information on the search engines.
The author devotes too many pages on technical information rather than as a practical guide. Other travelers on the cruise had the same comment about this book being impractical.

Reliable Info on Northernmost Landmasses on Earth.......2006-07-27

This book is a great source for curious minded people who wonder about those hidden Islands within 500 miles of the North Pole!

It is amazing to note that this island of Svalbard, most commonly noted as an obscure territory in the game "Risk," has such an astonishingly warm climate due to the same Mexican Gulf waters that fueled Hurricane Katrina! Its capital city is Longyearbyen and the highest temperature ever recorded here was 21.3 degrees Celsius, confirmed in this book and elsewhere. That's approximately 70 degrees farenheit and in proximity to the North Pole equal to that of Washington, DC in relation to Boston,Massachusetts. Interesting to note, eh?

I think there's multiple purposes of using this book, whether planning to camp out in this warm haven in the far north or learning what's at the top of your sphere, purchase this now!

A thorough examination of Svalbard.......1998-12-23

Having just returned from a holiday on Svalbard (the accurate name of the island archipelago that includes the largest island, Spitsbergen), I can attest to its overall accuracy. It centers its overview on Longyearbyen, the largest community on the island, and the start for any other excursion in Svalbard.

Book Description

Designed primarily for field study, this book introduces the variety of species living in our diverse coastal setting, from sand dunes to salt marshes. Among the organisms identified are salt meadow hay, comb jellies, pipe fish, ghost crabs, sea cucumbers, and black skimmers. Value investing classic worth a read.......2006-10-31

With so many thoroughly modern value investing books available, why bother with a 20-year-old one? The "perfect investment" remains a good short read about the highpoint concepts of value investing (picking stocks with sound fundamentals that are undervalued) interspersed with Miller's insights from experience. Especially worthwhile was the latter third of the book where Miller discusses the importance of linking value stock selection with market timing around the all-important capital gains tax discount. Tax matters are generally an afterthought in stock market books, but in the new era of free brokerage transactions taxes are the last big bite into profits.

This book is a good overview of Lincoln's life........1998-11-07

The author has purposely addressed the dearth of readable and manageable accounts of Lincoln's life and career. Young people and adults alike will find this book valuable. Although brief compared to the usual tomes written on this subject, the reader will gain a good understanding of the formation of Lincoln's character and magnitude of what he a accomplished. The author's style is smooth and engaging allowing the reader to think about the subject matter rather than struggling from one paragraph to the next. I found that the end of the book came quickley and without great labor. The curious reader will come away from this book with a desire for more knowledge and understanding of this great man.

great architectural illustrations.......2005-04-14

A friend reminded me that I have this book. I picked it up randomly when I was an impressionable young kid. It opened my eyes to a whole style of illustration. Now looking back on it a couple decades later, I can see it did actually have a great effect on the aesthetics of the sketching I do at work on a daily basis. How cool is that!

Oh, I had no real idea what the book is about, and still dont, really, but that didnt stop it from being an influential part of my youth.

Great collection of essays.......2003-02-13

This book is a great colection of essays by a brilliant thinker. In essays ranging from topics such as crime, education, psychology, and management, Ackoff manages to outline what systems thinking is truly about. Though I often did not agree with his prescriptions, the creative nature of his solutions very unique, and I would recommend it to anyone looking for a thought provoking experience.

Ackoffs 2nd Best - right after Re-creating the Corporation.......2002-05-29

The only book by Ackoff that I would recommend more highly is Re-creating the Corporation. These two books summarize much of his thought and philosophy of business design. If you are looking for a better understanding on systems thinking and its implications for organization design and peformance, and did not find it in Senge's The Fifth Discipline, then here is a great place to go. Put on your thinking cap and delve into Ackoff's Best.

Clearheaded Writing.......2005-02-24

So much nonsense has been written about Toscanini that it is a pleasure to have this double book available. Haggin may occasionally have been worshipful about Toscanini (tho not always), but he was always honest. Beautifully written.

Great read about great conductor.......2004-12-13

This is a great read! It consists of two books. The first is Haggin's own recollections of conversations with Toscanini and of rehearsals and performances during most of Toscanini's career. It is insightful. The second is Haggin's interviews with many musicians who played under Toscanini. It is quite moving and instructive. Together, they constitute a readable and enjoyable book about a very great conductor and ultimately a very humble man.
