    Although this guide had descriptions and some history of interesting places to visit, it had virtually no info on how to get there. I was looking for something like: "Catch a tram number... from Centraal Station to get to...", which wasn't there. I was hoping to find directions on how to get to all these wonderful places covered in the guide, but that simply wasn't available. It would have also been helpful to know the prices of admission tickets to museums etc, which I also did not find in the book.

    This booklet is a concise summary of important places to visit. It is not intended as a detailed book, but rather as the actual information you'll be holding in your pocket while doing your sightseeing. For planning ahead in detail, I recommend go to the internet.

    This is a very helpful guide that we found organized and well-indexed. You won't go wrong with this if you're visiting Amsterdam.

    The map which comes with this book is nearly perfect - it has all the tram and bus lines except the ones changed since '98 (very little changes) and it is more accurate, more detailed, and includes more of the city than the maps available in the VVV (tourist information) in Amsterdam. I spent the summer in Amsterdam and this map was indispensable, especially since I was not living in the city center and my apartment was located off most maps.

    The book, on the other hand, is great for listing ideas of things to see and do, but does not actually 'review' anything - the author basically seems to think _everything_ in Amsterdam is absolutely wonderful and worth seeing. This is a terrific attitude if you are there for a long time, but if you are planning a short visit, try to read one of the more critical books as well so you won't waste your time and miss the best things. Also, the book has not been updated recently, so several of the restaurants (vegetarian ones mostly) are no longer open (but, to be fair, I could not find _any_ guidebooks for Amsterdam in which all the vegetarian restaurants were still in business, including a pamphlet published only a few months before, since several had just gone under.)

    The map is excellent, very detailed, down to every street. And it's easy to read. The guide is brief, but helpful. Gives most of the essential information, all the museums and major attractions. We decided to order a second copy, in case our party wants to split up!

                                            This is one of the few books (of the many I have read about storytelling in marketing) that provides a good explanation of "Why" storytelling is a powerful tool and "How" is works. I like that Vincent evidently has carried out a sound piece of research before writing this book.

                                            I particularly like that he makes the point that not only do customers tell each other stories, they also live trough story themselves and build and support their own life-story through their consumption: "consumers in the post-modern world seek a narrative (or narratives) upon which to base their identity" (p. 9), "We define ourselves, our lives, and our well being by what we consume." (p. 11). Essentially this makes it clear that consumers exhibit what I would call sense making through consumption, and Vincent recognises that.

                                            I highly commend this book for anyone who considers exploring the powers of using storytelling in their marketing strategy, since it describes well how to create a brand narrative. I do however personally believe that building a brand narrative is just one way of using storytelling in marketing, there are other approaches to explore too.

                                            Laurence Vincent skillfully sets the stage on the amazing power of brand stories, how storytelling can be done with brands and how to mine stories from your own brands.

                                            The first half of the book is an excellent "history lesson" in brands like Apple, Nike and others and how they proficiently leverage their brand equity and story. The second half of the book is a "tutorial" in how to discover, mine and bring to light your brand's story.

                                            Truly an amazing and interesting book. Very insightful. The author is intelligent, articulate and easy to grasp. He makes a very strong case for realizing the power of brand stories and engaging consumers in new, compelling and oftentimes utterly unique ways.

                                            1 out of 5 stars The 80/20 rule is alive and well!.......2005-02-01

                                            Maybe you can't explain the creation and management of legendary brands--but if you can, Mr. Vincent didn't. Or, if he did, he used a LOT of extra words to make his explanation fit into a book. "The objective of every advertiser is to implicitly prescribe acts of consumer behavior (e.g., "But the product!"). Legendary Brands, however dole out the prescription through story. These brands do not yell at the consumer to buy, buy, buy. They instead engage them in a narrative that makes the consumer want to buy because they identify with narrative components." -from page 35.
                                            That sounds good to me. But that was about it.
                                            He continues throughout the book to equate a person's Faith with branding. Again, I can see some similarities, but his attempt to "explain" the transcendent by use of the eminent is incongruent unless you believe that there is nothing but the eminent. He would have you believe that your deepest beliefs are simply responses to someone's effective branding attempts.
                                            This book should set better with cynics and agnostics. I'm not reselling my copy-I don't want to spread his gospel.

                                            3 out of 5 stars GREAT BRAND SELECTION, DECENT NARRATIVE, WEAK DISCUSSION.......2003-06-12

                                            Harley, Kodak, Nike, Apple, Linux. The secret to the phenomenal success of these brands is the "narrative" that communicates the underlying brand philosophy, one that engages and inspires consumers to use and stay loyal to these "legendary brands".

                                            A slew of pages is devoted to theorizing about these brands' narrative structure and occasionally the pseudo-scientific verbiage is a little distracting (e.g., "Brand mythology acts upon the cognitive orientation centers of the brain in much the same way that religion and other deeply held philosophical beliefs do").

                                            Yet, all this could have been easily overlooked by the fastidious reader, but without a more organized analysis of how these seemingly facile narratives were conceived, attained, and then maintained by our "legendary" brands, the book falls short of its expectations. Some discussion of the evidence, even anecdotal, would have made this 5 star material although it may still be an interesting collectible for the insightful magazine style discussions of successful branding endeavours.

                                            What makes a brand become the stuff of legend? Author and consultant Laurence Vincent says it's the power of a good story. Vincent, whose specialty is forging alliances between consumer brands and entertainment properties, presents an interesting parallel between marketing and storytelling that makes sense in today's increasingly cluttered media environment. Vincent introduces you to the basics of myth and storytelling. He explains how these concepts apply to marketing strategy and offers plenty of real-world examples and case studies to illustrate his points. Except for predicting the coming integration of advertising and content (it's been around for decades), Vincent's book is full of fresh insight. We from getAbstract recommend this book to brand managers and marketing executives who want to learn how to turn their brands into powerful icons. Legendary Brands takes the reader step by step through the process - just like any good story.

                                              I have this book in German where Amazon still sells it. I am also reading "The 79th Survivor" by Artur Rubinstein's brother-in-law, Bronislaw Mlynarski who is mentioned in Slowes' book and who was one of 79 to survive the Starobielsk Camp - where ironically the Soviets were hoarding Ukrainian grain being shipped by trainloads to Hitler in 1939-40.

                                              Publishers' Weekly review seemed to think Slowes was not the genuine article because he was not face down in some mass-grave with a Walther PK bullet in the back of his head.......no he is a living witness !

                                              The USSR invaded Poland on 17th September 1939 in coordination with the Nazis; they seized the 300.000 Polish troops preparing a last stand in the SE of their country against the Wehrmacht when the Red Army fell in their rear and carted them off to slave camps in Magadan and throughout the Gulags. The Officers were siphoned off to special camps - where these reservists, doctors, lawyers, teachers, scientists could be denigrated, humiliated, robbed, starved, and experience life as prisoners of the NKVD not the Red Army. Was it in April 1940 that Beria and Stalin decided to do away with them ?

                                              Was this when the Nazis began construction of a new camp at Oswiecem known outside as Auschwitz ? Is this where Polish intellectuals and civic leaders were to be taken for liquidation (Jews did not arrive until late 1941) ? Is it true that the NKVD and SS ran a joint centre in Zakopane to coordinate the destruction of Poland's intelligentsia and independent leaders ? These are mentioned in the foreword to Slowes' book.

                                              The real value of Slowes' book is that he was a Jew in the Polish Officer Corps; and whereas many of the executioners of Stalin's NKVD who did the deed - not just at Katyn - were also Jewish - there has been a failure in many works to note that 15.000 officers is a huge under-estimate; and as Slowes points out there were at least 1000 Jews among those Polish Officers including the Chief Rabbi of the Polish Army - they too 'disappeared'.

                                              We should recall that Katyn was an old Cheka killing-zone; and that the only reason we heard of it was because the German advance exposed it; but Britain and USA continued the Soviet line of it being a German atrocity (and I believe Germans did hang at Nuremberg for this Soviet crime).........The story that Stalin told Sikorski about these officers having gone missing -when the Second Polish Corps was created in 1940 and allowed to leave for Iran (before fighting at Monte Cassino)- when they had 200.000 soldiers (incl. Menachem Begin) and very few officers - Stalin said he had no idea where the officers were - can be seen as the cause of the split between Poland and the Allies as their interests became subordinated to Realpolitik.

                                              In 1991 this book mentions they found other mass graves with soldiers from Starobielsk I believe. The Russians are slowly providing information to the Poles - mainly Yeltsin - Gorbachev was too much the Party Man to own up to this.

                                              In addition to these officers murdered by NKVD executioners to deprive Poland of any hope of becoming a sovereign state again; we should remember the thousands of families deported from the Soviet occupation of half Poland's territory (still today) and deportation of families of these officers to slave camps in Siberia, or Kazakhstan; or simply their death by starvation or being drowned in barges in the White Sea.

                                              Is there anything to choose between SS and NKVD ? Not really, except that the Bolsheviks had a 20 year head-start on the Nazis: imagine over 1.000 Jews actually fled the Soviet Occupied Zone to get into the German General-Government Area !!!!

                                              I think this is a very interesting book about a subject people in Western Europe know very little, and which goes to the very heart of Poland's social and economic weakness even today, when one of the Great Evils of the 20th Century; Soviet Communism sought to decapitate a nation and destroy any hope of independence.......and in so doing killed around 25.000 Polish Officers who could have led those 200.000 soldiers of the 2nd Corps under General Anders (who had spent 2 years under NKVD interrogation in Moscow)........these were the men that fought and took Monte Cassino.......having discovered from Radio Berlin months earlier what really happened to their officers.....and their Allies recite the words taught them by Stalin blaming the Nazis for NKVD war crimes
