          Book Description

With rich images and detailed text, the tumultuous history, local legends, and colorful character of Budapest are revealed in this visual travel guide. Travelers will discover what the Hapsburg emperor said about Europe’s most beautiful opera house, why the Hungarians eat paprika, and who bowed to the ground in thanks when he first saw Buddha. The coffeehouses of Budapest and their resident poets, the steamy Turkish baths, and the old haunts of the pashas, the stern-faced symbols of Communism and the Renaissance splendors of a vanished world, are described in lively detail. Eight guided walks highlight the city’s ancient history, grandiose architecture, vibrant culture, savory restaurants, and local traditions.

          4 out of 5 stars Self-guided walks are great.......2001-07-15

The authors provide maps and information for self-guided walks in four different areas of Budapdest. All walks are easily accomplished on foot and have start and stop points that conveniently lead into the other prescribed routes. The interesting tidbits included in this book allowed me to see and understand aspects of Budapest that I would have otherwise missed. The book does not include hotel or restaurant suggestions.

5 out of 5 stars By far the best, most-informed guide book on Budapest........1999-07-30

Ms. Barber and Roper-Evans know more about Budapest and its history, culture, sights and amenities than almost any native Hungarian. The guidebook is well-designed, edited and contains sufficient (not overwhelming) historical and cultural information for a traveler to appreciate Budapest as if he/she were a a privileged insider. This is a "must-buy" guide if you are traveling to Budapest.

In graduate school, I utilized this text. In addition, the work
was helpful in preparing for and passing the Uniform CPA Exam.
There is good coverage of cost-volume analysis, equivalent
units, margin analysis and other important topics for qualifying
examinations i.e. CPA Exam. The tables and graphical
presentations are helpful as are the problem sets. This work is
for the serious student in accounting. The course requires some
serious study, particularly in the area of process costing.

5 out of 5 stars the best costing book.......2002-12-07

I've studied cost accounting for 2 years in Hong Kong. The first year I used a really bad text book named 'Costing', I hated studying Costing. However after using the 'Cost Accounting: A Managerial Emphasis (10 Edition)', I become interested in Costing and Management Accounting. And deceide to have CMA exam in future. THIS BOOK IS REALLY GOOD ONE.

5 out of 5 stars A standard text for cost accounting.......2002-10-24

If you are looking for a single volume "bible" on cost accounting, this is likely the best book in print today to fit that bill. It is comprehensive in scope yet has many strengths to ease comprehension and aid readability.

The topics are grouped in six main sections each with several chapters on that topic. Since it is unlikely that you will read this reference / text book left to right as you would a novel this organization helps in finding what you are looking for and focusing on the area(s) of interest.

There are many helpful illustrations and a good use of color as well as chapter summaries and all the exercises you could ever hope for.

A very excellent feature is the use of application problems that take you step-by-step through building an Excel spreadsheet. This is tremendously useful.

The web support is also a good help as well as the streaming video vignettes.

I honestly find this topic very interesting and the 11th edition of this book to be a very valuable resource.

            5 out of 5 stars Highly recommended........2002-08-27

              Book Description

A contemporary of Emerson, Hawthorne, the Alcotts, and other New England Renaissance figures, Sarah Alden Bradford Ripley (1793-1867) is largely unknown to today's readers. Although she left no published works, Sarah is frequently mentioned in letters and journals written by her fellow intellectuals. She was a self-educated classical scholar who was well versed in languages and the sciences, ran a boarding school with her Unitarian minister husband to prepare boys for Harvard College, and raised seven children. Legend has it that she simultaneously rocked a cradle, shelled peas, heard one boy recite his Latin and another, his Greek.

In this first biography of the remarkable Mrs. Ripley, Joan W. Goodwin draws on both Sarah's letters and the writings of her contemporaries to paint as full a picture as possible of a compelling figure known until now only as a literary footnote. Goodwin reveals the inner drama of a woman's lonely struggle to reconcile the liberal Christian world view with her own increasing skepticism, and her traditional domestic role with the pursuit of intellectual attainments. The author's skillful presentation of primary materials allows Sarah to speak to the reader in her own voice, particularly through her correspondence with Mary Moody Emerson and Abigail Allyn Francis, lending insight into the anguish that shaped much of her life.

This is a captivating story that will appeal to historians and general readers alike.

This 20th-century Russian composer, later of French and American nationality, led a varied life which was mirrored by often startling changes in his musical style over the course of his life. His early years found him in Russia, where Rimsky, Korsakov, and Tchaikovsky were great influences. His international career soon exploded with the premieres of the Firebird, Petrushka, and the Rite of Spring. The period from 1920-1939, which he spent in France, was that of the great neo-classical compositions, this stylistic inclination eventually gave way to a highly individual use of serial techniques in his last years, when he took up residence in the US.The New Grove Stravinskymaps the composer's life and works in the finest of detail, bringing this great man and his music to life.About The New Grove II Composer Biography Series:These new, fully re-written editions of some of the most popular titles in the New Grove composer biography series last published in the 1980s build on the enormous success of those books, offering fresh new insights drawn from the most recent scholarship. Focusing on some of the greatest and most influential composers of the last few centuries of the millennium, these titles are derived from the second edition of The New Grove Dictionary of Music and Musicians. Most excitingly, as they will be published before the dictionary, they offer sneak previews of some of the best, most up-to-date entries in this landmark, end-of-the-century edition of the most authoritative, comprehensive, and widely respected music encyclopedia in the world. In addition to the re-written editions of The New Grove Wagner, The New Grove Haydn, and The New Grove Mozart comes for the first time The New Grove Stravinsky, the first in a series of New Grove composer biographies that will cover the great masters of the 20th century, never before published as individual volumes. This series is edited by Stanley Sadie and John Tyrrell. Both men live in the United Kingdom and have edited The New Grove Dictionary of Music and Musicians, Second Edition.

"...if you demand the deepest and most powerful planning engine, look no further." -- The Washington Post

"Fantastic! Finally, with ESPlanner we have financial planning software that makes my life cycle model operational for people everywhere to use. ESPlanner, developed by Economic Security Planning, Inc., revolutionizes financial planning. Traditional financial planning makes you set your own saving and life insurance targets. This is hard and, if you set your targets too low, dangerous. ESPlanner finds your targets for you by doing life cycle consumption smoothing--finding the most you can spend today without suffering a drop in living standard tomorrow. ESPlanner not only calculates your family's highest sustainable living standard, it also determines the amounts of saving and life insurance you need to maintain and protect that living standard through time. ESPlanner delivers its findings in the form of annual spending, saving, and insurance recommendations.

Whether you're working or retired, maximizing and smoothing your household's living standard isn't easy. Many factors are involved, including your household composition, assets, earnings, retirement ages, housing expenses and plans, special expenditures, estate plans, pensions, tax-favored assets, federal and state income taxes, payroll taxes, Social Security retirement and survivor benefits, desired changes in living standard, economies in shared living, and borrowing constraints. ESPlanner considers these and a host of other factors, including contingent plans and the fact that survivors may have different needs and incomes. ESPlanner also lets you vary key inputs, such as the ages at which you'll retire, collect Social Security retirement benefits, and start to withdraw tax-deferred assets, to determine how these choices affect your maximum sustainable living standard. Although its calculations are complex, ESPlanner's interface is user-friendly, and its recommendations are easy to follow.

An Ordinary Soldier is the inspirational memoir of Charles William Gebhardt, who served in the 7th Infantry Division of the 17th Infantry Regiment, whose duties took them from the Aleutians to the Marshall Islands to the Philippines. He encountered life-threatening battles and during the course of World War II, yet also forged enduring friendships. Written by Gebhardt's nephew, An Ordinary Soldier follows his service from his difficult childhood and the rigors of boot camp into the true hell of combat. He would belong to the group that wore the symbol and shared the nickname of the "Hourglass". A remarkable true story that brings the Pacific Theater experience to vivid life, and a welcome contribution to military history and biography shelves.

This book is written in the memory of my uncle Charles and for those who fought during World War II. Many stories have been written about the conflict of WWII, but many stories will never be written because they have been lost or forgotten through time. I have written this book of my uncle Charles and his best friend Harold, knowing that there are many stories like this that will never be told and for them this book remebers you. We must remember this great generation of our fathers for they have kept our freedom with their heroic sacrifices. Please read and enjoy this story and remember those who have fallen.

My best wishes to all who have served our country in time of war and peace and are fighting yet today.

I would have given this book 0 stars if it was an option. This book has NO relevant information on current Real Estate technology. Roald Marth seems to have no real world experience on the topic of Real Estate technology or profiting from it.

Though the Jewish population of Westmoreland County is spread more thinly than it would be in Brooklyn or Miami Beach, anthropologist Mark Gruber sees the same themes repeated here he would associate with large Jewish settlements in urban areas -- themes that include "skills on how to live as a minority and how to do so with a dignified and decent kind of life. How to cope with the pressures of people who are anti-Semitic or who are ignorant. I just see such a marvelous ethnic heritage being passed on," he said. "I am strangely proud to be a son of the soil from which these storytelles have come," writes Gruber, a Benedictine monk, in his introductory notes to the book. "My people also figure in this narrative: we are `bit players' in their drama."

The subjects of the book range in age from their 50s to their 90s, representing the collective experience of several generations who arrived in Westmoreland County in three distinct waves: during the Civil War, at the turn of the 20th century and as mid-century refugees. Mostly of Russian and Lithuanian descent, they built several communities clustered around synagogues in Greensburg, Jeannette, Latrobe and Mount Pleasant. Many of the original settlers were Pittsburgh based peddlers who sought customers among the county's coal miners and farmers. They went on to develop a number of well-known mercantile fortunes. They took active roles in the civic organizations of the wider community. Most individual accounts reflect a common lifestyle built around Judaic law and tradition: the temple as central institution; the family name as sacrosanct; the male as leader and provider. Education, often not far below having food on the table and clothes to wear, was a paramount goal.----Diane McMullin, Pittsburgh Post-Gazette, Pittsburgh East, Wednesday, November 12, 1997
