The best out there..........2002-05-15
I bought this book before I left on a 4 month international exchange w/ my university. While there, I got to see and use the other brands of HK travel guides used by the other exchange students, including Lonely Planet. The Fodor's edition, by far, has the most detailed "key" information than any of the other guides. It's simple to use, I highly recommend it.
Great Help for Those Planning a Trip!.......2000-09-08
Hi, we are going to Hong Kong next year, and I bought this book to help me decide where to stay and pick a few highlights that I will want to plan on seeing.
This book is really, really helpful when it comes to listing hotels and restaurants according to regions of the city. There are also quite a few maps that are fairly easy to read and they have laid out the book so that you could take it along on a walking tour of Hong Kong Island or Kowloon, etc. and refer to it very easily. They also include information on public transportation i.e. buses, the subway, etc., how to get to and from the airport, etc. The book is a convenient size to put in a small backpack as well.
The only thing that I would do to improve this book is to add more pictures of some of the things described!
This book also includes lots of useful information on side trips to both Macau and Guangzhou, which are both easy day trips from Hong Kong.
Could Be One of the Best Local Guide.......2000-09-06
As a native who grew up and used to live in Hong Kong, it is always fun and entertaining to read about these wonderful and exciting accounts about the city from the eyes of foreigners.
A restless and vibrant city with more than 6.5 million inhabited on 1071 square miles, Hong Kong is the center of the Far East, dubbed "Pearl of the Orient". A tour-guide of 200 or so pages probably can't portrait the exciting lifestyles led by locals and all the fun this island has to offer.
Yet Fodor has done quite an awesome job.
In addition to the usual tidbits on "how to get there" and the A-Z guide, Fodor team really does the homework and presents the city with unusual details and point-of-interests that are not commonly known to foreigners. A city made up of the Kowloon peninsula, the Hong Kong Island (where major financial and business center locates), and 235 outer islands, one would have to explore the outlying islands, whether inhabited or not, in order to complete travel experience in Hong Kong. Fodor delivers vivid and lucid photos of the islands as well as shopping guidelines, food and drinks, and destivals and seasonal events.
There is no best time to visit in Hong Kong. You might want to avoid the summer months of hot and humid weather. A stroll around the Central District will expose you to the heart of the city - financial district. You will also find historical monuments left by the British empire, which once ruled over this colony for 150 years. A walk up the mid-level from Central introduced dozens of specialty restaurants which serve from bagels to cajun chicken to pita bread.
Be sure to Fodor with you on your next vacation to Hong Kong. Read and study it and you will find your travel experience rewarding and exciting. Like many tour guides published, local cultures and hang-outs are never sufficient and infact, visitors are usually advised to stay away from "local" areas; yet I recommend you walking through the local neighborhoods i Hong Kong, which are relatively welcoming and safe. You will find surprised delights like roasted goose, exotic Chinese pastries, and hand-made crafts.
Unstructured maps.......2000-09-04
While the book provide some useful information, it is not do a good job providing maps and cross references. I regret I bought it, not very useful at all.

Customer Reviews:
A great way to learn!.......1999-12-25
I was a student in an MBA financial accounting course that used Dan Gode's Financial Accounting Tutor software instead of a textbook. This turned out to be of great benefit. The Tutor presented and explained financial accounting in a straightforward and insightful manner. The interactivity of the software added another dimension to learning, making me more involved in the learning process and making it more enjoyable to solve problems. I would highly recommend this to anyone who wants to learn financial accounting on their own and I would highly recommend the Tutor for any introductory/intermediate accounting course in college or business school. Another thing to consider is that the cost of the software package is much less compared to an average accounting book running you upwards of $70 and an average MBA course running you upwards of $2,500.

More information.......2006-08-14
I am an intermediate level student of Spanish. This book keeps being mentioned and I would like to read it in Spanish. I can't find a copy where I can read a page or two to see if that might be possible. Does anyone familiar with this book have a recommendation?
over all, a time-worthy autobiographical historical peice.......2006-03-20
Although I've read this book before, this time, as an older and wiser reader I was able to recall a lot more information and specifics that had slipped my mind since the previous reading. As a non-native spanish speaker, it was easy to follow, in a dialect I could easily translate if necessary. Plus, this book is useful in the spanish classes that I teach in portraying a realistic view of guatemalan history.
This is a book that makes you think........1998-05-31
After reading this book, I realized how truly blessed I am. My problems are so minor compared to theirs. It also helps you to understand the suffering of the Indigenous persons both in Guatemala and in other countries throughout Latin America. I highly recommend this book to anyone who cares about the world around them.

A superb story about the rescue of a Canadian hero.......2005-12-07
Canada is a land without heroes but with some very remarkable citizens, as this book about saving the summer home of Canada's most distinguished humourist makes abundantly clear.
One of those remarkable citizens is Pete McGarvey, who came to Orillia in 1947 as a 19-year-old high school graduate to work at a just established and definitely struggling tiny radio station located in cramped quarters above Loblaw's little grocery store. Ten years later McGarvey was honoured as Orillia's "Citizen of the Year" for his success in saving the Stephen Leacock Home and helping make it the town's most enduring and famous attraction.
It's a book written in the kindly spirit of Leacock, who in 1912 portrayed many of the leading citizens of Orillia in 'Sunshine Sketches of a Little Town'. It's Canada's version of the hit musical "Carousel" without the dark elements. Not everyone in town was amused in 1912, or by the time McGarvey arrived on the scene; he and a dedicated few had a long uphill task to persuade town officials to recognize the national stature within their midst.
By the mid-1950s, the Leacock home was abandoned and open to every hobo who wanted a free place to stay. In the winters, as a teenager then, I remember walking across the ice on Lake Couchiching to it and going in to get out of the cold. Leacock's personal library was still there; the hobos didn't consider books worth stealing, and even as a teen I thought i was on sacred ground.
It's not that Leacock was forgotten. Every year, math teacher R. B. Laing read Leacock's witty story about A, B and C to introduce his Grade 10 class to algebra. But most of the snooty set regarded 'Sunshine Sketches' as the ramblings of a local drunk who made fun of the town's most honorable, upright and proper citizens. It's little wonder McGarvey and a dedicated few local citizens had an almost impossible task to rescue and preserve Leacock's home.
Granted, I knew about half the people cited in this book. I used to babysit McGarvey's children. I listened to him every day on the radio, worked at CFOR when I was in high school (which by then was right across the street), and he offered me a permanent job which I turned down to work at the local newspaper. McGarvey was legendary; when it came to writing news stories or taking news over the phone, he was the fastest two-finger typist in Canada. My goal was to be a writer, not a broadcaster (but I am a two-finger typist).
McGarvey's career included being one of the best broadcasters in Orillia, and later Toronto, and a superb writer as this book shows, plus the guiding spirit in persuading Orillia to preserve a memorial to one of Canada's earliest humourists. This book tells a story I grew up with, and fills it in with a wealth of the background efforts needed to make it come true.
It is a testimonial to two Canadian heroes -- Leacock, and McGarvey who kept the legend of Leacock alive in the town he made world famous. Surely, someday, McGarvey -- and C. H. Hale, who launched the effort shortly after Leacock died in 1944 -- deserve biographies of their own.
Is this likely? Hardly. Canada usually doesn't honour its heroes. But, in this instance, a Canadian hero got due recognition. This is a superb story of how it happened.

Book Description
Peter Warlock (Philip Heseltine) is one of the most fascinating and enigmatic of twentieth-century British composers. He was by turns a sensitive songwriter of remarkable genius, a witty and caustic critic, a rare scholar of early music, and a friend of some of the leading figures of the day - including William Walton, Jacob Epstein, and D. H. Lawrence. This is a complete account of this mercurial musician. Barry Smith uses new and often controversial material in telling his real, and frequently outrageous story. Here is the man, the composer, writer, and scholar, from his dangerous involvement in the occult to his long-lasting loves and hates - all of which ended by his own hand in a gas-filled London flat on a cold winter's morning in 1930.
Customer Reviews:
THE BEST WORK TO DATE!.......1998-11-14
Philip Heseltine. taking on many pseudonyms in his short life but better known as Peter Warlock, was editor of "The Sackbut", a publication that took a long time to materialize but was short lived. Generally controversial, the Sackbut was highly regarded by many and especially those who wished to see the "establishment" in the field of British music taken to task. It was Heseltine's pleasure to be one of, if not THE most vociferous critics of his time and history shows that his eloquent and learned use of the English language was used to its fullest degree.
This special paragraph
" . . music is neither old nor modern: it is either good or bad music, and the date at which it was written has no significance whatever. Dates and periods are of interest only to the student of musical history. . . . All old music was modern once, and much more of the music of yesterday already sounds more old-fashioned than works which were written three centuries ago. All good music, whatever its date, is ageless -- as alive and significant today as it was when it was written . . ."
can also be found on page 197 of Barry Smith's highly acclaimed book as titled above. Published in 1994, the centenary of Heseltine's birth, this book is perhaps only the second major and authoritative work on the subject of a controversial figure such as Heseltine. The first one by Warlock's friend and some time companion Cecil Gray, has been out of print for many years.
Published by Oxford University Press, this is an extremely well researched and written work. Warlock scholars are recommended to add this book to their small but unique collection of literature pertaining a figure (in the musical sense) of inimitable quality. Hardback and Paperback now available.
