Book Description
Madrid has to be the nightlife capital of Europe, the Madrilenos are known for their inexhaustible stamina and approach to life. While probably recognised worldwide for its trio of art galleries, it is increasingly the gourmet scene, whether it be in the myriad little tapas bars or the burgeoning haute-cuisine restaurants, which is now drawing the plaudits, as Madrid captures Spanish cooking at its most visceral. Locals don't eat until 11pm, they party until dawn on a week night and still manage a full day in the office, interrupted, of course, by an excellent lunch. Madrid is as much about the food as it is the culture.

Book Description
Madeleine Albright is one of the most admired women of our era and the rst in American history to serve as Secretary of State. For eight years, during Bill Clinton's two presidential terms, she was a decision-maker and inside observer of the most dramatic episodes of recent years-from NATO's decision to halt ethnic cleansing in Kosovo, to the pursuit of peace in the Middle East. Now, in an outspoken memoir, she shares her story and provides a ringside view of world affairs during a period of unprecedented turbulence. Albright's story begins with her childhood as a Czechoslovak refugee, whose family fled rst Hitler and then the Communists. In America, Albright grew up to be a passionate advocate of civil and women's rights and followed a zigzag path to a career that ultimately placed her in the upper stratosphere of diplomacy and policy-making in her adopted country. Refreshingly candid, Madam Secretary brings to life the world leaders Albright dealt with intimately in her years of service and the battles she fought to prove her worth in a male-dominated arena. There are colorful portraits of such leading American gures as Bill and Hillary Clinton, Colin Powell, Jesse Helms, and of a host of fascinating foreign ofcials-Vaclav Havel, Yasser Arafat, Ariel Sharon, Benjamin Netanyahu, King Hussein, Vladimir Putin, Slobodan Milosevic, and North Korea's mysterious Kim Jong-Il. Besides these many encounters with the famous and powerful, we get to know Albright the private woman: her life raising three daughters, the painful breakup of her marriage to the scion of one of America's leading newspaper families, and the discovery late in life of her own Jewish ancestry and that her grandparents had died in concentration camps. Madam Secretary is sure to be one of the signature books of the early years of the twenty-rst century-a tapestry both intimate and panoramic, personal and public, a rich memoir destined to become a classic.
Customer Reviews:
A very good "read".......2007-09-28
This is a very good bio ;read by the author which gives it some extra interest and dimension. This could have been a dry tome except for the little glimpses of Ms. Albright and her human side and how she used her humaanity to affect world policy. Further proof that " if women ruled the world..." is something to be considered. I believe that while Ms. Albright was at the helm as secretary of state , we were all a little bit safer.
Madam Secretary!.......2007-09-16
An admireable lady with lots of guts! She has accomplished some feats that would be nearly impossible for most of us. Learn the real facts about Madam Secretary!
If you want to learn more about her as a person fine but lacking insights into important issues of her time.......2007-09-06
This tape provides a very good personal history of her as a person but, unfortunately, very little with respect to analysis of policies and issues, even those when she was foreign secretary. Is this not why someone buys a book like this to begin with? It's as if the book defeats its purpose.
Really great book!!!.......2007-05-14
I really enjoyed this book, Madeleine Albright has a great sense of humour and this book is for everyone, who is interested in foreign affairs (and memoirs).
Behind the Iron Curtain.......2007-01-04
Madeleine provides behind the scene insight into the fall of the Iron Curtain/Berlin Wall and the introduction of a free market economy in Central and Eastern Europe. Shortly after reading her Memoir I toured nine countries along the Danube and saw the importance of the spark of freedom that her father passed along to her. One person made a difference; especially one with her energy, language skills, and cultural familiarity. This book gives all of the nitty gritty details that made her the woman she is and gave her the strength to be the right person at the right time to usher in major changes in that part of the world. Fascinating!

Book Description
No American envoy has ever burst on the diplomatic scene and grabbed center stage in the theater of foreign relations like Madeleine Albright. Navigating difficult terrain as few can, Thomas Blood provides exclusive interviews with, and revealing anecdotes from, politicians, friends, adversaries, and colleagues, including former Secretary of State Warren Christopher, Senators Leahy, Mikulski, Kerrey, Helms, Reid, and Rockefeller, and House Minority Leader Dick Gephardt. This unique biography reveals the dramatic story of the first woman U.S. Secretary of State. Rather than providing a simple chronology, Blood focuses on the defining moments in Madeleine Albright's life, identifying the periods that best open a window on the Secretary of State's uncanny ability to triumph over adversity, her unparalleled success in politics and her meteoric rise to dominance in the world of foreign policy. From her family's thrilling escape from Czechoslovakia to her astounding rise to power to her victories and setbacks as the head of American foreign policy, Madeleine Albright's life unfolds like a major motion picture. An immensely readable biogrpahy that illuminates key experiences in Albright's career and personal life, Madam Secretary introduces us to Madeleine Albright the person, the politician, the policymaker-- a woman for our times.
Customer Reviews:
Saccharine waste of money.......2005-02-19
I bought this book by mistake. Its title was the same and the cover is almost the same as the real thing ie Madeleine Albright's autobiography. The author is clearly a fan, so much so that it is full of saccharine platitudes and name dropping. I'll be looking more closely next time - particularly at anything published by St Martin's Griffin or authored by an uncritical Mr Blood.
Kate Owen
Wished I'd returned the book.......2001-11-27
I agree with the other reviewers. I, too, was looking forward to a critical and well-argued review of Albright's career. Instead, this book is page upon page of thin fawning and simplistic worship. Just for fun, I tried to find one single paragraph critical of Albright in the chapter on her relationship with Powell. I couldn't find one.
Where was the editor when this book was being written? Why was this author chosen to write this biography? Surely there must be credible authors able to recount a far more analytical and balanced story than Thomas Blood.
A biographical catastrophe with no intellectual merit!.......2000-02-17
The fact that this book even got published makes my head smart with incredulity; there is no political objectivity or critical analysis to be found anywhere on the printed pages nor is there any scholarly, in-depth research on the life of our country's first woman Secretary of State. In the author's eyes, if one can call him that, Madeline Albright is the goddess of the State Department, and that's that. This book is astounding in that it is so terrible; it is nothing but shoddy work -- a meandering diatribe that resembles a poorly written fifth grade book report. To say more would be a waste of space and time...
one-dimensional writing.......1999-07-09
I work "inside the beltway" and Mr. Blood's book should be praised for its attempt to put Secretary Albright on a pedastal. The media today takes great pleasure in tearing down the character of politicians, atheletes, etc. But this book cannot be taken seriously; it is too one-sided in its portrayal of Ms. Albright and the issues Mr. Blood writes about are too "cut and dried" by his account. Shame on him - with his experiences in Washington he should know such issues are imbued with plots, subplots, and unknown factors. Mr. Blood's experience as a lobbyist comes through in his writing, as he could no doubt convince Americans that Washington DC has cool, dry summers. I wish Mr. Blood better luck in his future attempts.
refreshingly positive.......1999-06-09
Political biographies have more than there share of critics .Everyone thinks they could do a better job than that of the person holding office. Blood did a good job of showing the history of Madeline Albright and what she was bringing to the table. It was refreshing to 'not see' the usual bashing of a Washington Woman who Blood himself called "tough-as-nails." The only biographies most people think are "balanced' are those that tear apart the subjects accomplishments. After reading this book I felt positive and hopeful for other women in politics and passed it along to my daughter, a political science major at Harvard.(she also enjoyed it.)

Book Description
In this memoir, a sequel to his immensely popular autobiography, former Alaska Governor Jay Hammond spins more delightful yarns about the fascinating people and humorous situations he has encountered from one end of Alaska to the other, from wild tales about life in the Bush to stories from the hot air-filled legislative halls in Juneau. Hammond is one of Alaska's great storytellers, charming even those who are the targets of tongue-in-cheek, sometimes poetic, abuse. He remains one of the state's most beloved and admired public figures twenty years after leaving office.
A former Marine fighter pilot from upstate New York, Jay Hammond headed north to Alaska after service in the Pacific during World War II. He became a trapper, bush pilot, fisherman, guide, government wolf hunter, poet, environmentalist, and finally a reluctant politician who endeared himself to Alaskans. He gave them what he describes as the unvarnished and sometimes unwelcome truth about public issues. For this, Alaskans punished Hammond by electing him governor-twice. "Jay Hammond has led an amazing life, and his writing is full of self-deprecating, gentle good humor . . ."-Alaska Journal of Commerce
Customer Reviews:

incredibly illuminating on an opaque part of the globe.......2001-09-18
When encountering/appraising other cultures we often find a confusion of concept,a hit or miss situation,a steady stream of befuddled provincial generalizations, misinformation,or none,no information at all.
For the realm of politics it's clear, certain powers control that, those threads and conduits of information, shape it, fashion it however and whatever they want to suit particular political necessities.
In speaking of culture however I'd suspect the channels would be relatively more forthcoming, more open, talismanic, not quite as taciturn as more sensitive information, as the various unending conflagrations occuring in the Middle East.
Robert Fleisher under generous grants spent time in Israel, interviewing composers who represent different generations, from the pioneers,'halutzim' to the sabras to emigres,to those born out of war and independence to those after, with the relative stability after Oslo.
There are great histories revealed here as Haim Alexander and his time spent in Berlin. He indentifies the formative powerful figure of Stefan Wolpe, a student of Anton Webern who was the first to introduce the dodecaphonic language into Israel. What is clear when reading these 20 interviews are the unending search for identity and a functional musical language. Paul Ben-Haim is, has been an influential figure of the "Mediterranean School" in Israel,a relatively facile tonal language with the influx of differing folk and melodic utilizations.Yet there is ever bit a set of creative problematics with tonality as dodecaphonic musical language. This tonality had dominated the musical language of creators in the Thirties and Forties, prior to the War of Independence.
What is clear as revealed in yet another fascinating interview of Ami Maayani,is that Israeli composers all bloom and develop late,in that their military service interrupts creativity. So it is well not until one is close to 30 years of age, where anything like a career in writing music is even considered. Maayani offers a wealth of advice, that a musician, as himself, is, was not ready, mature enough to write music. That composition should come at the end of one's musical life. Many of today's composers, he goes on to say, only want to be recognized as a composer, not knowing anything of the creative lifeworld, hardly knowing the tools, techniques, and history of the achievements of modernity for instance.
We find that musical education as well does not take place entirely within Israeli institutions, as Betty Olivero, who had lived in the United States for a time, and later also spending time studying composition with Luciano Berio, by invitation. She has been a great inspiration of pursuing the modernist language, that of extended instrumental techniques, fusing it sometimes with her native folk heritage imagery.
There also seems to be an above-ground compositional railroad that leads to the University of Pennsylvania. Where composer/creators as Yinam Leef come to study with dodecaphonist Richard Wernick and or timbralist/miniaturist George Crumb.
There are wonderful excerpts of works given as well, as Tzvi Avni's "Piano Sonata #2",or Arik Shapira's "Missa Viva",and a healthy bibliography and a handsome list of relative works for each of the 20 composers. This I also found quite useful, For instance I didn't know that the young composer Oded Zehavi wrote an "Israeli War Requiem".

Dubious Accusations of the Polish Home Army (AK) Killing Fugitive Jews.......2007-03-06
Oskar Pinkus is a Polish Jew who lived in Losice, located 85 miles east of Warsaw and 10 miles from the Bug River. In 1939-1940, after the German-Soviet conquest of Poland, Losice's Jews didn't believe in Hitler's threats (pp. 50-51). This further shows that the widespread Jewish-Communist collaboration of 1939 couldn't have been driven by fears of Nazi extermination.
The Polish Blue Police (Policja Granatowa) was kept in the dark until the last moment before the August 1942 roundup of Losice's Jews (p. 106). The Germans also forced the local farmers to come with their carts (p. 106). (This corrects the misuse of a painting shown in the movie SHTETL, through which the viewer is misled into believing that the local farmers collaborated willingly in the roundup and transport of Bransk's Jews). At Siedlce, 20 miles from Losice, the Ukrainian police took over (pp. 109-110), and both the Blue Police and Polish farmers were sent home. The Ukrainians and Germans loaded the Jews onto trains for their 60-mile trip to their deaths at Treblinka. At Siedlce, it was the Germans, not Poles, who were jeering the Jews: "As the Jews passed, the Poles fell silent watching the procession of doomed men and women. The German soldiers who stood on the sidewalks commanded in sneering voices...: (pp. 109-110).
Just before the roundup, Pinkus fled Losice. Throughout his treks, he was helped by Poles in numerous, successive occasions (p. 88, 90, 91,128, 129, 137, 212), including once by a Polish Blue Policeman (p. 87). This further proves that many Polish benefactors were necessary for the saving of even one Jew. Pinkus also mentions Poles who refused to help owing to the German-imposed death penalty for such acts (p. 89, 93, 133) and, unlike Jan Tomasz Gross, recognizes the legitimacy of this motive for Polish inaction (p. 119). However, Pinkus criticized overseas Jews for their lack of assistance (p. 119).
Pinkus eventually found "permanent" lodging in a shelter underneath farmer Karbicki's barn. At first, Karbicki helped only because Pinkus paid him but, in time, became more altruistic (p. 199; "But I can't keep you for nothing", p. 220). The reader may exonerate Karbicki after considering his extreme poverty, which included tattered clothes and hole-ridden boots (p. 128; p. 153). (It is unfair that Poles who were paid to help Jews are deemed ineligible for the Yad Vashem medal, whereas Danes, who were incomparably better well-off under German occupation and yet took hefty fees for shipping Jews to Sweden, are eligible).
At first, Pinkus praised the AK and commended it for assassinating Germans, spies, collaborators, and informers (pp. 195, 204), and for making the Germans fearful of entering the woods. As a result of all this, in 1943 the hidden Jews felt safer than ever (p. 196).
In time, Pinkus left his shelter at Karbicki's farm and encountered other Jews in hiding in the forest or nearby farms. They assembled into a band that built an independent shelter within the forest, and that stole feedstuffs and livestock from Polish farmers (pp. 204-206). One may understand why Poles sometimes killed fugitive Jews.
Pinkus then writes: "Shymeluk had gone to Wolki for food one night and did not return. At first the farmers denied that he had even been in the village but eventually we learned that he had been killed by...the AK, the Polish underground. Shymeluk was in a farmer's house when the AK arrived. They took him with them, and although there was no direct proof that they killed him, it remained a fact that Shymeluk never returned from that trip." (p. 213). Obviously, Pinkus didn't see any of this, but was relying on someone else's statements (in other words, hearsay). Besides, could "going for food" include stealing? Finally, in any event, how could Pinkus know that Shymeluk's presumed death didn't occur sometime AFTER the latter's presumed contact with the AK?
Interestingly, Pinkus' only clearly eyewitness experience with the AK was a positive one. The AK visited the area, forced all the Jews out of hiding, and, not only didn't harm them, but encouraged them (pp. 215-218).
But later that night, the AK allegedly returned and "without even looking" threw grenades into the forest shelter in which the Jews had until recently been hiding (p. 218). Considering the darkness of the forest, and unless Pinkus was very close to the shelter (which he doesn't indicate), how could he possibly know such details? Besides, if the AK was out to kill Jews, why didn't it do so earlier that day, in broad daylight, when it had all the Jews gathered together?
Skepticism is justified. The informed reader may recount Polish Jew Jerzy Kosinski's tall tales about Polish atrocities against Jews, exposed as such by independent investigation, or Yaffa Eliach's contradictory, fantastic account of her 7 year-old self counting the number of bullets fired by an AK soldier into her baby brother. (Who counts shots, and what AK soldier would waste multiple scarce bullets on an infant?)
Pinkus even makes a Yaffa Eliach-like accusation of the AK having an order to kill all remaining Polish Jews. He admits the nonexistence of written evidence of it, yet says: "But better evidence lies in their record of persistent and widespread murder...In 1945 alone, 352 Jews were murdered by the AK..." (p. 226). What a non sequitur! A few hundred Jews killed, even if all correctly blamed on the AK, is hardly proof of an AK "mini-Wannsee" (Eliach's term). And 352 killed out of over 250,000 remaining Polish Jews would only mean that the AK did an atrociously poor job of it.
Pinkus claims that, in March 1945, the AK killed 3 of the 20 surviving Jews of Losice (p. 226). This is a flat lie. The AK no longer existed then! It had already been disbanded by Leopold Okulicki, its final commander, in January 1945.
Devastating.......2005-03-19
Very painful but extremely well written account of the author's experiences as a teenage Jew under Nazi rule. In addition to the horrific experiences of this young man and his family, he gives us a glimpse of the bigotry and ignorance in Europe that allowed Hitler to slaughter so many Europeans, most of them Jews. A must-read for everyone, especially anyone who is so ignorant as to compare Israeli Jews to Nazis.
Devastating.......2002-12-17
Devastating saga of endurance and inhumanity that makes Anne Frank's fate appear almost benign by comparison - and just ONE of so many individual tragedies. To Pinkus's descendants I can only reach out a hand of solidarity and voice my hope that Palestinians/Moslems/Arabs (do Americans know the difference?) are never so demonized.

Customer Reviews:
Effective and Enlightening.......2003-12-22
The Healing Home Book is at long last a book that gives the reader easy to follow, effective practices to create a home filled with peace, light, happiness and love.
Based on the Native Tradition of the Medicine Wheel, it allows the reader to pin-point areas of disharmony and resolve them using the power of tested and tried methods based on years of experience by the author.
Learning to deal with ley lines and water lines without disturbing the harmony of the Earth is as important as clearing stuck emotional and spiritual energies within the living space in an effective and safe way.
The second part of the book gives beautiful ways of re-connecting to the source and creating balance within ourselves, so we are well prepared and able to redress the balance within our living and working space.
I would recommend this book to everyone who is aware of the importance of balance and harmony in the space that we inhabit, so that they can create for themselves a life filled with happiness, peace, abundance and health.

Book Description
First American Art celebrates the rich aesthetic traditions of North American Indians through a series of concepts that define the aesthetic realm in Native American art. The key concepts - ideas, emotion, movement, integrity, intimacy, composition, and vocabulary--were chosen at a recent gathering of Native and non-Native artists and scholars, and are used in examining this extraordinary collection.
The works included here, from many tribal traditions across Canada and the United States, are manifestations of the cultures from which they spring. They add individual or tribal points of view to an already diverse body of scholarship on the subject of Indians. Various perspectives interpret an art object as commodity, artifact, specimen, heirloom, objet d'art, treasured cultural heritage, or sacred emblem. This book attempts to answer the question, What would be the Native perspective?
First American Art provides the welcome opportunity to explore and celebrate the aesthetic achievements, creativity, and diverse artistic traditions of North American Native peoples. By offering an aesthetic analysis of the underlying spiritual and cultural inspirations and values that inform these works, this book gives a more complete picture of what is meant by Native art.
Customer Reviews:
If you have "Native Paths" already, you don't need this one!.......2004-06-11
The 3 stars are for the superb photography, the impeccable book design, and the exquisite material in the Diker Collection.
Otherwise, rather meaningless essays that may tickle the ears of some gallery-hopping audience, but they hardly connect with the objects in the collection. If writers have to trouble philosophers such as Hegel or artists such as Kandinsky in footnotes to make their choice of words understood, they probably don't know what they really talk about and hope that no reader will see through the "emperor's new clothes."
The curators/writers try very, very hard to lift the objects from the "primitive" to the highest levels of "Art writ large" which is a perfectly legitimate goal. But then, a buyer and reader should expect a better and more carefully done documentation, and not one that is full of errors and that lacks almost all important information. Where captions seem too poor and too meagre, they are blown up with meaningless ballyhoo and arty bla-bla.
Dimensions often are given incorrectly which may be a minor aspect; but it DOES make a difference if a blanket strip is 3 millimeters (0.3 cm) thick or 3 centimeters as given in the book! Another example of careless documentation: Catalogue number 22 on page 78 features a magnificient blanket strip perhaps made by a Nez Perce or Cayuse woman. The yellow rosettes employ the rare technique of horsehair coils wrapped with colored porcupine quills, sewn down to a hide foundation with each wrap of the quills! This important horsehair is not mentioned at all which makes me think that the writer of the captions had no idea of what she was writing about! From the rosettes' centers buckskin thongs hang down, carrying little brass hawk bells. Probably "brass" was too mundane for the writer so she pepped it up to "copper alloy" -- is that the sort of information that should help broaden the viewer's/reader's understanding of American Indian art? No, it does not add one iota more of information than "brass" would do, but this ethnocentric gallery and museum chic arrogance helps to deceive the buyer of this book.
If you have "Native Paths", the first catalogue that was published about the Diker Collection in 1998 and has a lot of the same photographs, you won't need this book. If you don't have, buy "First American Art" and enjoy the beautiful objects. But you better turn off your inner ears and let not spoil your visual feast by arty and meaningless gobbledygook!
And let's not forget: the shirts and the moccasins and the bags and the baskets did serve some utiliarian or ceremonial function when they were still owned by their makers -- the Nez Perce boy shirt with the flamboyantly beaded strips and rich fringes, hanging in the stark whiteness of a Bauhaus style living room, can never be pure, functionless art, as a Mark Rothko painting or Calder mobile is. I had a chance to see that boy's shirt in such a setting and it struck me more than any Rothko would!
