From the supplier: Limited liability companies (LLC) and partnerships (LLP) offer public accounting firms a means of minimizing the personal liability of persons who are not guilty of wrongdoing or negligence. Of the two, the LLP is recommended because although both are treated as a partnership in a passthrough capacity, taxation of LLCs remains unclear.

                                  Book Description

A lively, hard-hitting biography of the pro-business, pro-Jesus, anti-government, anti-environment House majority leader who is driving today's congressional agenda.

With The Hammer, Lou Dubose and Jan Reid track the rise of Tom DeLay from owner of a pest control business to unremarkable, and hard-partying, Texas legislator (his nickname was "Hot Tub Tom"), to the congressional pinnacle of power. DeLay is the representative who has called the Environmental Protection Agency "the Gestapo of government," that he drove what he dubbed "The Campaign" to impeach Bill Clinton because Clinton lacked a "biblical worldview," that he didn't serve in Vietnam because too many minorities had signed up leaving no room for people like him, and recently stated any House adoption of a revised bill reinstating tax credits for poor families "ain't going to happen." DeLay is bold--a majority leader with extraordinary powers and extraordinary ambition--and whether he is maneuvering to redistrict Texas congressional seats or flying to Israel to critique the president, he uses that power to shape our politics here and abroad. It is time a proper introduction was made to this man, the only member of the House to keep half a dozen bullwhips on his office wall and a copy of the Ten Commandments on the windowsill.

3 out of 5 stars The Hammer Gets Nailed.......2006-04-24

The interesting thing about this is the subject rather than the writing or the style of the book. I found that I labored reading this rather than enjoying it. However, it does get three stars because it was revealing about Tom Delay whom the author presented as interesting and disturbing, an American Machiavelli.

We learn a little bit of his character by his pettiness in his reaction to lawsuits against him, and his membership in a club that, using a play on words, has the initials KKK. These things give a little glimpse into the man's vindictiveness and racism. We also learn about Delay's utter insensitivity toward others with such pronouncements explaining why he didn't serve in the army--because enlistments were being taken by Blacks and Latinos, and he did not want to deny them the high pay that the Army was providing. Gee, that was big of him.

Such insensitivity turns to the pathological in his defense of "free market economics" in American Samoa. An unscrupulous asian businessman named Tan needed labor to have his products reach American markets. Convincing dirt poor Asians that their family members will get jobs in America, they go further in debt to pay the thousands of dollars required for job selection. The unwitting worker deplanes on American territory (American Samoa) and works under sweatshop conditions fourteen hours a day. They live in a virtual barracks with little sustenance, privacy or sanitation. Managers impregnate these defenseless female employees who are then forced to have abortions. In the meantime, they get further into debt producing clothes that proudly bear the title, "American made." Even Delay applauds the free-market economics and capitalism in Samoa.

We learn that during his stay in a swanky Samoan hotel, his time on the golf links, and at sumptuous banquets, desperate workers are trying to pass notes to him and his entourage to let him know of the desperate conditions under which they labor. Oblivious, Delay will block any attempt by congress to enact or improve working conditions on the island. One wonders if any of those notes addressed the forced abortions to which he is so opposed in this country!

His machiavellian skill is evident in congress as he extends the deadlines of votes for some old-fashioned arm-twisting and bribery. This true-to-life ogre may have changed the way congress does business forever. He shuts out the traditional bi-partisan debate on bills, and even demands what he expects from lobbyists--rather than the other way around. He is ultimately censured several times by a bi-partisan ethics committee.

Update: Tom Delay has since resigned his seat in disgrace, and will probably, or at least hopefully, go to jail. We must hope that his congressional legacy is not allowed to continue.

Recently a convention which held the theme that Christians are being persecuted in this country called Tom Delay a fine christian man. The main speaker said that they (I guess that means the rest of us) were after Delay because of his Christian faith, and his belief in Jesus Christ.

The one good thing about being the victim is, you don't have to accept responsibility for your actions.

                                  Amen!

5 out of 5 stars Excellent Expose of How DeLay Worked!.......2006-01-17

One of the Republican reforms implemented after the 1994 takeover of the House was to greatly reduce the power of formerly powerful committee chairmen who had presided with baronial independence based on a rigid system of seniority. Now there is a six-year limit on their chairmanships, support staff have been cut one-third (limiting their ability to analyze issues), each party's study groups were eliminated (provided brief summaries of bills), and the Speaker has the ability to appoint/replace chairmen. This new environment provided the power vacuum for Majority Leader DeLay to grab power.

DeLay dodged Vietnam service via student and marriage deferments. DeLay first ran for Congress after the EPA banned Mirex - one of the few chemicals that kill fire ants. This was particularly offensive to DeLay who had been an exterminator, albeit a marginally successful one. (The IRS had filed liens in '79, '80, '83 for failure to pay withheld income and Social Security taxes from DeLay's employees.) DeLay had been a three-term member of the Texas legislature (few remember him at that time) at the time he first ran for Congress in 1984.

DeLay's first focus was the pornography and banality of grants supported by the National Endowment for the Arts - with a few others from Texas the result was an $8 million cut in their funding. DeLay was a heavy drinker at the time, but after seeing one of Dr. James Dobson's TV presentations he became very upset about now spending much time with his daughter, and he became a "Born-Again" Baptist.

DeLay got on the Republican Committee on Committees as a freshman, making him part of those who allocate seats and can thereby cultivate favor. Upon re-election DeLay moved to the powerful Appropriations Committee, though that never was his real interest.

1994 was a banner year for House Republicans. Between Hillary's healthcare reform bill (supported by President Clinton, but massacred by insurance companies), Clinton's support for gays in the military (created upsetness among evangelical Christians), and the assault weapons ban (prompted the NRA to donate $70 million to support candidates to its liking), the Republicans took control. DeLay got into the practice of using his PAC to buy loyalty of members by contributing to their campaigns and providing training for political candidates he supported; he furthered his strength by also getting lobbyists on his rolodex to also help support those same candidates directly. DeLay became the Republican Whip, and selected Hastert as chief deputy.

Moving further, DeLay started the "K Street Project" - lobbyists united behind the concept of freeing business from government taxation and regulation. (When asked, DeLay replied that he could not think of a Federal regulation he would keep intact.) Saipan (an American protectorate) offers an example of DeLay's regulation-free utopia - DeLay worked to prevent U.S. labor laws from applying there, leaving intact the practice of $3/hour wages, less deductions for food and lodging (ten to a room), large fees assessed outsiders to enter for a job, and minimal benefits, and forcing acceptance of an Enron (large DeLay donor) proposal for a new power-plant.

Dubose moves on to summaries of various DeLay protégés in charge of fund-raising that skirted laws limiting the amounts from individuals and corporations - the process involved shuffling funds, and where possible, also hiding IDs. While some of the participants were forced to pay fines, others maneuvered around to achieve dismissal of their case. DeLay, however, was untouched.

Another key DeLay action, according to Dubose, was his forcing the House to go beyond voting censure of President Clinton for the Lewinsky affair, to the much bigger act of impeachment.

DeLay's greatest "innovation" was forcing lobbying groups to accept Republican approval of those filling key leadership positions - those that did not simply did not get access. DeLay forced the issue when he pulled a key piece of legislation for the Electronic Industries Alliance on copyright protection that had been worked on for over a year when they moved to hire a Democrat head. (DeLay was later censured by the House Ethics Committee over this action; regardless, the practice of approving lobbying group leadership remains firmly in place.) Criteria considered were three: 1)Is the applicant a Republican? 2)How much has he/she contributed to the Republican party, candidates, and PACs? 3)Has the applicant contributed to the Democrat part, candidates, and PACs? Lobbyists are now told to lean on House members to whom they have contributed money and tell them how the party wants them to vote.

DeLay and Rove then joined forces to change Texas districting to favor Republicans. The first outcome was that 18 of 21 hand-picked conservative Republicans won Texas legislative races, taking over the law-making in that state. They then redistricted ("gerrymandered" according to opponents) so that 5 - 7 more Republicans would win election to Congress, as well as defeat some of Bush's sharpest critics. (DeLay has been indicted by local officials for his role in financing this transition.)

DeLay supports Israel (forced Bush to withdraw support for Palestine), solicits money from Jewish groups, and looks forward to "The Day" (Apocalypse).

DeLay's greatest vulnerability at this time appears to be his close association with lobbyists Jack Abramoff, charter member of DeLay's K-Street "kitchen cabinet" lobbying group. Abramoff and associates took $45 million in Indian tribe lobbying fees - over the same time period G.M.'s total lobbying was less, as was the big four in pharmaceuticals. This amount was about 25% of one tribes entire budget - reportedly squeezed out of them through scare tactics.

"The Hammer" does a good job of explaining the source of Congressman DeLay's power, and is interesting reading.

At the age of 5, Malika Oufkir, eldest daughter of General Oufkir, was adopted by King Muhammad V of Morocco and sent to live in the palace as part of the royal court. There she led a life of unimaginable privilege and luxury alongside the king's own daughter. King Hassan II ascended the throne following Muhammad V's death, and in 1972 General Oufkir was found guilty of treason after staging a coup against the new regime, and was summarily executed. Immediately afterward, Malika, her mother, and her five siblings were arrested and imprisoned, despite having no prior knowledge of the coup attempt.

They were first held in an abandoned fort, where they ate moderately well and were allowed to keep some of their fine clothing and books. Conditions steadily deteriorated, and the family was eventually transferred to a remote desert prison, where they suffered a decade of solitary confinement, torture, starvation, and the complete absence of sunlight. Oufkir's horrifying descriptions of the conditions are mesmerizing, particularly when contrasted with her earlier life in the royal court, and many graphic images will long haunt readers. Finally, teetering on the edge of madness and aware that they had been left to die, Oufkir and her siblings managed to tunnel out using their bare hands and teaspoons, only to be caught days later. Her account of their final flight to freedom makes for breathtaking reading. Stolen Lives is a remarkable book of unfathomable deprivation and the power of the human will to survive.

                                    Book Description

A gripping memoir that reads like a political thriller--the story of Malika Oufkir's turbulent and remarkable life. Born in 1953, Malika Oufkir was the eldest daughter of General Oufkir, the King of Morocco's closest aide. Adopted by the king at the age of five, Malika spent most of her childhood and adolescence in the seclusion of the court harem, one of the most eligible heiresses in the kingdom, surrounded by luxury and extraordinary privilege.

Then, on August 16, 1972, her father was arrested and executed after an attempt to assassinate the king. Malika, her five younger brothers and sisters. and her mother were immediately imprisoned in a desert penal colony. After fifteen years, the last ten of which they spent locked up in solitary cells, the Oufkir children managed to dig a tunnel with their bare hands and make an audacious escape. Recaptured after five days, Malika was finally able to leave Morocco and begin a new life in exile in 1996.

A heartrending account in the face of extreme deprivation and the courage with which one family faced its fate, Stolen Lives is an unforgettable story of one woman's journey to freedom.

5 out of 5 stars Incredible Story - Deserved Better Editor.......2007-09-10

I am very disappointed in some of the reviews that I have read about this book; thank goodness they are the minority. Yes, I agree that it was poorly edited, and the story that was being relayed really could have been told better. It disturbs me that some of the reviewers almost appeared to attack the author. This lady is not an author/writer; she's no Stephen King or Dan Brown. Those authors have the advantage of fiction on their respective sides. Malika Oufkir had no such advantage. She is a survivor who had to actually live the hell that she describes in her book.

Imagine being a political prisoner - your only crime being that you were related to someone who either did something terrible against the country or "allegedly" did so - you are living in conditions of squalor. Your captors want you to die, but don't want to necessarily pull the trigger. You are starved, not allowed outside, not allowed to see or feel the sun, and deprived of the most basic information such as the date and time. You watch your sister pick the rat droppings from pieces of stale bread before "happily" consuming it. You watch your three-year old brother's life as a political prisoner. That's what you lived for most of two decades. Finally, years after being released, you get the courage to tell your story so that the world has a chance to know what you have been through, and that political imprisonment is not the cake walk or country club behind bars that it has been touted through the years. For months, you fight through the tears and the recollections of the circumstances and events that above all, you mostly want to forget. Then, proud that you were able to clear that final hurdle, you read the book reviews on Amazon only to find that one reader finds the book "difficult to believe" and even "boring." The nerve of some people to sit in their air conditioned homes with their refrigerator and freezer full, to sit at their computer with access to the world, to not be able to look past the flaws of the book to see the real story. If this was fiction, I could see the criticism, but given the storyline and the simple fact that it was fact, I simply cannot justify attacking the author about the quality of the book. Her experience has forever changed her and her reaction to life itself.

Bottom line - this was a riveting story that could have been a riveting book. I give the story itself 5+ stars. I hope Ms. Oufkir and her family are proud that they survived such an incredulous nightmare. I was left wanting more information, but I personally feel fortunate to have received what information I got; Ms. Oufkir didn't have to put her ordeal in writing. The editing gets one star. The editor and publisher failed Ms. Oufkir and should be ashamed that her story was not given the very best attention to detail. It almost seems as though the book was rushed to go to print, and Ms. Oufkir's story suffered the consequences. And that is a real travesty.

                                    2 out of 5 stars Survival Story.......2007-08-30

Because of her father's treachery in attempting to assassinate the king of Morocco, Malika, her mother, her siblings and two family friends are imprisoned in the desert. For years they live in tiny cells infested with bugs and mice who battle them for their near-starvation rations. Finally they make a desperate move to tunnel out of their prison and alert the international news media of their imprisonment, which puts sufficient pressure on the king to free them.

Malika's life wasn't always so bad, though. In fact, when she was five, the king adopted her to live in the palace as a companion to his daughter. Although she missed her family and felt trapped in her life as royalty, Malika was well fed and well brought up and had all of the luxuries life could hand out to a child. This makes her subsequent imprisonment all the more shocking, especially as it is at the hands of her adopted family.

I found this book a bit scattered. The author would state in passing something she would then address later, which gave me the feeling of a great deal of jumping around. She also tries a bit too hard to make a connection between life in the palace and life in prison, which I thought was more than a small stretch. Although the author argues that she was never really "free" to do what she wanted while living with the royals, what child ever is free to do what he or she wants? There were few incidents of her being treated cruelly while growing up, and she wanted for nothing, yet she tried to paint herself as a poor sad little child. This tended to make me feel less sorry for her, rather than more.

The part of the book dealing with the family's prison life was horrifying almost beyond belief, yet was dealt with in such a casual tone of voice that I found it hard to get as outraged and sad as I felt I should have been. Something about the tone of the book just didn't strike the right note with me.

1 out of 5 stars Boring Beyond Belief.......2007-07-04

There is nothing "gripping" about this book. The beginning of the book, the tale of life with the King, is interesting. Once the family is arrested and incarcerated, it becomes boring beyond belief - and this is the part of the book that should be riveting! Instead, I found the narration totally self-centered and the "story" absolutely colorless. I quit reading about page 138 (just after the escape) because at that point I could have cared less what happened to this family. The travesty is that these events were real and I should feel outrage and compassion for this family. Instead, I'm annoyed I spent money on this horribly written/edited/translated book!

                                    4 out of 5 stars Stolen Lives.......2007-05-28

I found this story to be an inspirational account of a young girl's struggle from the palace to a jail cell. The orginial controversy of punnishing children for their father's actions developed the story into a thrilling drama. It was a compelling and gripping story, but they way it was written was a little off. Some of the sentances were difficult to read because of the way the words were written. I did not like how the writer kept jumping to the past and present to explain events. This made it confusing to determine what details were current and which already occured.

I read the book for a book club. I was disappointed. The story was very self-centered. Also, difficult to believe, but a bit boring.

Malika Oufkir has spent virtually her whole life as a prisoner. Stolen Lives is a heart-rending account of resilience in the face of extreme deprivation, of the courage and even humor with which one family faced their tormented fate. A shocking true story, it is hard to comprehend that it could have happened in our own times.

                                    2 out of 5 stars GOOD STORY...BAD WRITING....BAD EDITING..........2005-01-21

This is a book that on its face held a lot of promise. Any story in which a mother and her children, as well as faithful family retainers, are unjustly imprisoned in squalid conditions for twenty years for an ostensible crime comitted by the familial patriarch would certainly be of interest. Wrong! This is a tepid and disappointing book, poorly written and, most certainly, poorly edited. It is so filled with contraditions and inconsistencies, as to create somewhat of a credibility gap for the reader.

The story revolves around the Oufkir family, who were, at one time, a prominent, highly respected, and well known Moroccan family. Their story is told by Malika Oufkir, who is the eldest daughter of the late General Oufkir, who was executed in August 1972, immediately following an aborted attempt to assassinate King Hassan II of Morocco, for whom he was the Minister of Defense. General's Oufkir's treasonous action was the catalyst for the tragic turn of events that were to engulf his family.

After the aborted coup, the General's immediate family was placed under house arrest and four months later, along with two loyal family retainers who volunteered to share their fate, were whisked away to the first of several desert prisons that were to house them for the next fifteen years.

As Malika tells it, hers was initially almost a fairy tale story. Brought up in luxurious surroundings, she suffered early heartbreak when, at the age of five, she was separated from her family and "adopted" by then King Muhammad V, so as to be a live in playmate for the King's daughter. This adoption is never really explained, and one has no idea what her parents' thoughts were on this issue. Malika lived in the Palace in the lap of luxury for many years. As a teenager, however, she moved back with her family, where, there too, she continued to live a very privileged life, steeped in luxury and money.

After the Oufkirs' circumstances changed, theirs is truly a tragic story. There is little doubt that the conditions in their desert prisons were deplorable and squalid. With inadequate sanitation, insufficient food, no medical care, or educational provisions, the family was truly living a life of privation. Cutoff from the outside world, as they were, they truly were disenfranchised.

Their escape from their last desert prison, an escape that brought their plight to the consciousness of the public, was amazing. But for their escape, there is no doubt in my mind that they would still be languishing in a desert prison today, barely alive, if not already dead. I salute their determination and ingenuity in making a deperate break for freedom.

The problem lies in the telling of the story, which is so poorly told. Many things are left unexplained. No effort is made to ground the events that led to their family's downfall in a historical context. Whatever Malika said seems to have been what went into the final draft of this book, even if she contradicted herself a page or two later, which is the main problem with the book. There are so many inconsistencies with what Malika herself says, that the discerning reader is left to question much of what she represents.

Malika comes across as a somewhat self-absorbed, vapid woman to whom fate dealt a harsh and unusually cruel hand. Her self-absorption is most evident in that she barely acknowledges the sacrifice of the two faithful family retainers, who voluntarily shared their fate, nor does she discuss the impact that this had on them. It is also a little disconcerting that more does not come through about the perceptions the other family members had about this hellish experience. Their insight might have provided a little more balance and interest to the narrative. In the hands of a good writer and and excellent editor, this book might have withstood scrutiny and met expectations.

Sorry, Oprah, your book club selections are usually excellent. This one fails to make the grade.

                                            Book Description

Established in 1876, Mount Pleasant Cemetery has a rich and textured history. It is the keeper of thousands of stories, each of which has contributed to the history of our city, province, and country. Many of Canada's most beloved figures rest there - William Lyon Mackenzie King, Foster Hewitt, Glenn Gould, and Timothy Eaton are just a few. Other, less known historical figures are buried there also - the first Canadian soldier killed in First World War and victims of the 1949 Noronic disaster. Along with a fascinating account of the cemetery's history, this illustrated guide includes descriptions of the remarkable monuments and the beautiful horticultural features. Accompanying maps detailing their locations make this book a perfect companion for a walking tour through the grounds.

no more or less...well,maybe a bit less..Given the fact that this cemetery is,alledgedly,"one of the oldest in north america"and a product of that golden age of victorian mourning and ostentation, this guidebook leaves MUCH to be desired..For starters there are few photographs of the monuments..Now,surely,there must be an abundance of fine mourning statues, weeping angels and the like at Mount pleasant, but this book has so few photographic representations of them as to lead the reader to believe that they do not exist there..What the book does have in abundance are photographs of some of the solid,if boring 19th century occupants of the cemetery, mainly grocers, printers, barristers, clerics and the like..Given that this cemetery catered to Toronto's elite this is perhaps to be expected, but the capsule accounts of thier lives,as written by Mike Filey, are about as interesting as a memorandum from the local Rotary club..Page after page of the same details,as if nearly all of the major players buried at Mount Pleasant conspired together to lead identical lives..page after page of how these people built a business, moved it from one location to another, and then died...Were there no military heroes,no great entertainers,no celebrated authors,no really INTERESTING people buried at Mount Pleasant?Indeed,if Filey wanted to be monotonous(as,apparently,he determined to be when laying out the outline which this guidebook would follow)he might just as well spent his time researching the various plumbers,housewives,bus-drivers,store-clerks,and so forth that are also buried at Mount Pleasant..at least most of the rest of us can relate to thier lives and,who knows, maybe a few life capsules of"ordinary"people might have broken up the tedium of reading about Toronto's 19th century business elite, whose only real difference from the masses, apparently, was the fact that they had more money and more leisure time..Filey's text proves that they did NOT lead more interesting lives...

                                            Book Description

THE DAZZLING RISE OF A YOUNG COUNTRY STAR

Last summer, "Blue," sung by LeAnn Rimes but originally written for Patsy Cline, became the fastest rising single of all time. Her album of the same name debuted at #1. And it all happened before her fourteenth birthday.

Who is this singer with the incredible voice, the youngest ever artist ever nominated for a Country Music Association Award, and winner of the Grammy Award for Best New Artist? Jo Sgammato traveled from Nashville to LeAnn's hometown of Pearl, Mississippi, then followed her path to Dallas and beyond to reveal her inspiring life. From singing at eighteen months through dazzling performances at talent shows, opry stages and sports arenas, here is the heartwarming story of a determined young singer and an American family whose dedication made A DREAM COME TRUE.

The book was about LeAnn Rimes, a singer. She was the youngest ever nominated for best new artist. She could sing when she was 18 monthes old, where she went on to talent shows, opry stages, and sports stadiums. LeAnn Rimes has always liked to sing and likes to be with her family. LeAnn always got special attention because she was an only child.

As a great fan of LeAnn Rimes, I have to say I found this biography more than a little disappointing. I discovered absolutely no information on her that couldn't be found in the most superficial interviews she has given. Since reading it I have also learned, from a interview with LeAnn herself, that not only was she not consulted in the writing of this book, the author did not even bother to interview her! It was based primarily on past interviews conducted by other writers. I you have absolutely no knowlege of LeAnn you might enjoy this book, otherwise I recommend passing it over.
