I'm ready to move!.......2005-06-12

By and large, this is an excellent series for moving beyond the usual sort of travel book and getting a look at what makes a city or a country work elsewhere in the world. I spent some time in the UK about forty years ago, got thoroughly hooked on London, and have made several visits back there since, but I was never able to figure a way to move there permanently -- or I simply never quite worked up the nerve. Whatever. The Thatcher years changed the city enormously and mostly not for the best, and the Blair years (which this book doesn't cover, obviously) probably have changed things yet again. But the root condition of "London-ness" hasn't changed in centuries, and the author does a very good job of communicating what that is, from the day-to-day workings of the "nanny state" and the natural civility and courtesy of most Londoners (most of them, most of the time) to thumbnail descriptions of the Metropolitan Area's neighborhoods and why you *really* don't want to own a car there if you can help it. Hargraves is a Yank who spent seven years living and working as an almost-ordinary bloke in London, and his perspective, leavened by dry wit, make for very engaging reading.

Excellent For Students.......1999-04-13

I'm planning on studying in London for a year or more, and was so greatful for this book. It's an interesting read, more than a reference book, but can be referred to over and over again. Reccomened if you are going to spend time living, not visiting London, or if you are just interested in the city and its culture.

All-in-one fact book for aspiring Londoners.......1998-07-18

I was happy to find this book because it answered all the questions I had about going to London and spending about six months there. It goes beyond the tourist layer of London (which is pretty thick) and gets you into the city as it exists for Londoners. Even after several months here I still refer to it often and it has helped me to really enjoy the city, away from the madding crowds.

This cocktail table style book presents a number of nice photographs of royal palaces and manors in Sweden. An excellent text of architectural discourse is included in both English and Swedish. Additionally, you will learn much of the royal family heritage, traits, and history. A thin book of only 100 pages with 50% Swedish text. Mycket bra!

Very Textbook-- Predictable Marketing Prescriptions!.......2003-04-21

Philip Kotler is a strong personal brand in the marketing field. He has aggressively launched many marketing books in recent years in order to build on--- leverage on his personal brand equity as one of the "top-edge marketing gurus"in the world.

But gurus definitely need to have breakthrough ideas in their fields in order to back their gurus' status up.

There is nothing new and exciting from a book written by a marketing guru here who bragged himself as professional in the marketing field for forty years in the Preface of the book.

I do understand that this book targets at more junior or middle management levels managers either in the marketing field or the related or non-related fields. However, this book is too basic, assuming that the aforesaid managers are just so naive, ignorant or green about marketing. A lot of information in the book can be sourced from the internet Free of Charge easily!

What Philip Kotler wrote in this book is more like Cliff Notes, presenting an oversimplified view about marketing in a hypercompetitive marketing world these days.

In addition, most of the ideas in the book are not originated by Philip Kotler himself. He has read a lot of business or marketing bestsellers. No doubt about it! It seems like he has just completed a less than 200 pages book report, and has synthesized a lot of cute, but not necessarily practical marketing ideas in a well-packaged, best-seller format fashion.

As an educated guess, I assume this book was written by Philip Kotler within no more than 3 months. Besides, there are some errors in the book,including: P.192--"Good to Great" should be written by James C. Collins and Jerry I. Porras, not James Champy, etc.

As a marketing guru, Philip Kotler should be more keen on raising higher scholarly standard and launching more good quality marketing books, rather than keen on being" quick fix"--- launching a lot of new books, but sacrificing his brand reputation and solid academic background.

On the whole, this book is very textbook and good for university students like Freshman.... The marketing prescriptions are too predictable and filled with conventional wisdom, if not insights.

As a long-standing consumer of Kotler's books, this is a little piece of customer feedback for the marketing guru to reflect and improve on......

Great artwork, great CD, and the roots of American Music. .......2007-03-21

A great book and a great CD at the price of one or the other. Book contains the comprehensive full-color artwork from Robert Crumb's three in and out of print collectors' card series: Jazz, Blues and Country featuring a few of the well-known artists and a lot of obscurities from the 20's and 30's. A great gift or a must have item for any fan of American Roots Music of the 20's and 30's.

Crumb's Heroes.......2007-03-19

Most Blues afficionado's will recognize the source of a lot of these illustrations but Crumbs personal take on the subjects brings new light and colour to some much loved portraits.The text is very light and could have been expanded, hence 4 stars . Buy Now

Trading cards for the music aficianado.......2007-03-07

It is worth it for the CD alone, but you get this glorious book as well, packed with wonderful color illustrations that Robert Crumb first put forward as trading cards of classic Blues, Jazz and Country musicians with the hope of stimulating interest in these musical legends. The cards were eventually packaged in sets, and sold through Shanachie Records. The number of cards increased over the years, to the point that a compilation like this had to come along at one point. The book has been lovingly packaged with an introduction by Terry Zwigoff, that is destined to become a collector's item, like so much of Crumb's work. The CD was selected and compiled by R. Crumb himself, drawn from his extensive collection of music. Unfortunately it is loosely attached to the inside of the backcover, with the contents listed on the end page. A more permanent slipcase would have been nice, but then one can hardly complain to finally have Crumb's glorious tribute contained in a handsome little volume.

Pictures plus music equals happiness.......2007-02-21

This is an excellent deal. The recordings are certainly esoteric, but I must be in the correct demographic (or something.) I like just about all of the music. I'm a kind of old-time music dilettante, so it's a great way for someone like me to check out some more obscure stuff.

As for the book... hard cover, heavy paper and just the right size to carry around (if so desired.)

Of course the main selling point of this book is the drawings. They are uniformly excellent. Someone with an obsessive personality may wish to collect the actual trading cards which are reproduced in this book, but this is a far more economical and practical means of collecting these drawings.

There is mention of Crumb's decision to use a different coloring technique for the jazz trading card set in the book's introduction. This means that some of Crumb's trademark cross-hatch shading is obscured by the overlay of color. Rather than being a detriment to the jazz drawings, it actually helps to give them a distinct character.

Anyway, buy this book. It's worth double the price.

this book is a must for any R.Crumb fan!.......2007-01-31

This book reprints all of the collector's cards series that were published close to 30 years ago by Nick Perls (Yazoo Records) as three different sets of cards(Heroes of the Blues, Early Jazz Greats, and Pioneers of Country Music). Originally, each set was priced at around $16, and they went out of print and disappeared much too quickly.
Now you can have them all in one book, with all the biographical sketches of the artists on each facing page, plus a great little CD of music by some of the artists - 21 songs are included on this CD.

This book is a must for Crumb fans, as well as for fans of the early forms of American music.
