Five stars for a great city........2005-09-03
Dear God, it's too tragic. The loss of life, the loss of a city... this book is obsolete now. The 2006 edition should not even be released. It's painful to go back and read this book, about all the wonderful things New Orleans had.
I'm currently volunteering with the Red Cross, and so much is gone. If you were interested in seeing the cemeteries like St. Louis #1 and #2, they're gone. So are most of the best bars and restaurants in Bywater and Mid-City. It looks like most of the Garden District is okay. I don't think people can understand the devastation... it's just awful. What a grim time. Some of this architecture lost is irreplaceable.
Part of what makes New Orleans great is the people. I've heard that a lot of them don't plan to come back, it's too painful. And the loss of life... dear God, it doesn't seem fair.
I hope when they rebuild the city they do justice to the city it was - it would be all too easy to turn the entire city into a theme park to try and make up for lost tourist dollars. Another part of N.O.'s greatness was the fact that it had REAL neighborhoods.
The city will be missed.

Product Description
The results from Census 2000 continue to disclose remarkable population trends in the nations cities and suburbs during the last decade of the twentieth century. They confirm that American metropolitan areas lie at the heart of the nations most pronounced demographic and economic changes. The first volume in the Redefining Urban and Suburban America series focused on population growth and decline, and the dramatic changes occurring in the racial and ethnic makeup of cities and suburbs. The second volume made clear that regional differences add texture to migration, income and poverty, and housing trends in the nations largest cities and metropolitan areas. This third volume in the series describes anew the changing shape of metropolitan America and the consequences for policies in areas such as employment, public services, and urban revitalization. As decentralization of population and economic activity continued in most metropolitan areas, once-suburban areas have transformed into new engines of metropolitan growth, or "boomburbs." At the same time, some traditional central cities have enjoyed a population renaissance, thanks to the appeal of "living downtown," often close to workplaces and entertainment. The book's contributors probe the rise of these new growth centers and their impact on the metropolitan landscape. Volume three also provides a closer look at the social and economic impacts of growth patterns in cities and suburbs, including how suburbanization has affected access to employment for minorities and lower-income workers, the way that housing development influences central city population growth and decline, and how these patterns are shifting the economic balance between older and newer suburbs.
Customer Reviews:
interesting data, uneven interpretation.......2005-06-10
This book (or more accurately, set of books) is a list of essays on what 2000 census data tells us about American cities and suburbs. The first (and most interesting) volume focuses not just the fate of cities as a whole, but the growth of individual neighborhoods within cities and changes in the ethnic and social composition of various cities and suburbs. The second is more focused on immigration and housing (telling us, not suprirsingly, that the former was more numerous than before during the 1990s, and the latter became more expensive), but does have some interesting essays on poverty and overcrowding. A few of the more interesting facts:
*80 of America's 100 largest cities actually gained population in the 1990s. Many of them gained not only singles, but married-couple families: not just sprawling Sun Belt cities that grew through annexation, but even denser, more singles-oriented cities like New York City (11% growth) and Portland (17% growth).
*But despite constant media caterwauling about gentrification, most of this growth was due to working-class, usually Latino, immigration rather than to an invasion of upscale whites. Many allegedly gentrifying cities (e.g. NYC, Chicago) gained population, but lost non-Hispanic whites. And though poverty rates declined slightly in many cities, most cities still had poverty rates far higher than their suburbs. For example, Chicago had a 19.6% poverty rate, as opposed to its suburbs' 5.6%. Even the residents of more prosperous cities like San Francisco and Portland were more likely to be poor than suburbanites; in both places, city poverty was 11-13% and suburban poverty 6-8% (Portland having slightly higher numbers in both categories).
*Similarly, cities had fewer higher-income households than their suburbs. In the 100 largest American cities, only 16.6 percent of households had incomes in the top quintile nationally (that is, top 20 percent)- and that number includes some "cities" that are really suburbs, such as Plano, Texas, a suburb of Dallas. Again, even some fairly prosperous cities did not reach the 20 percent mark, such as Portland (16.4%) and Boston (15.0%). By contrast, suburbs consistently contained a disproportionate share of high income households- in the average metro area, 25.5% of suburban households were in the top 20% of earners nationally.
*Poverty was less concentrated than in the 1980s; the number of very poor city census tracts (i.e. 40% poverty rate or below) declined by 21% in the 1990s.
*Within cities, varying patterns emerged. Downtowns gained population in most cities, even some declining ones. But in many cities, inner-city neighborhoods near downtown lost population while outer-ring neighborhoods near suburbia were more successful (especially in cities with undeveloped land at the fringes, the latter in built-out cities).
*In all but the most fast-growing areas, suburban decline is common. Nationally, about a quarter of suburbs lost population in the 1990s.
*As Jane Jacobs pointed out decades ago, density (i.e. lots of residences per acre) and overcrowding (i.e. multiple occupants per room) do not go together. The fifteen most overcrowded counties in America are low density rural places in heavily Native American and Hispanic areas. Similarly, Atanta's most immigrant oriented suburb, Chamblee, has an overcrowding rate five times that of Atlanta- that is, five times as many Chamblee residents live more than one to a room, despite the higher levels of social misery in inner-city Atlanta.
However, this book could have been more carefully written and/or edited in spots. For example, one essay claimed that car-dependent cities grew and transit-oriented cities shrunk, asserting that this generalization "survives controlling for regions, as emphasized by a growth comparison between nondriving cities (such as San Francisco) and driving cities (such as Los Angeles) within the same region." (Vol. 1 p. 28). But a table in the very same essay shows that San Francisco grew FASTER than Los Angeles in the 1990s (albeit by the not-very-significant margin of 7.3% to Los Angeles' 6.0%) (Id. at 16).
The same essay lists a variety of other factors correlating with growth (e.g. warm weather, high levels of education) but fails to distinguish correlation and causation: that is, it may be that unrelated factors such as municipal annexation of suburban territory (more common in warm-weather, auto-oriented Sun Belt cities) cause such cities to gain population.
*Sometimes authors' differing interpretations of Census data are flat-out inexplicable. One essay asserts that downtown Houston's population grew by 69% (Vol. 1, p. 68) while another asserts that Houston's central business district lost people (Id. at 97). Some explanation of this type of difference might have been interesting - I assume that one author defined "downtown" more broadly than another, but I couldn't guess which one.

The veteran author of critically praised books about Emily Brontë and Lucie Duff Gordon has written an exemplary popular biography of the powerful, controversial prime minister who indelibly shaped the world's largest democracy. Katherine Frank's solidly researched narrative is particularly good on the early years of Indira Gandhi (1917-84), cogently delineating her complex relationship with her father, nationalist hero Jawaharlal Nehru, which was intimate when they were pouring out their feelings in letters, but strained when they were actually together. We see an intelligent, strong-minded woman coming of age in a turbulent time marked by her relatives' frequent stays in prison as India struggled for freedom from Great Britain. After independence, when Nehru became prime minister, Gandhi was politically active but for many years resisted seeking power in her own right. Following the deaths of her husband (Feroze Gandhi, no relation to the Mahatma) in 1960 and Nehru in 1964, she moved into the top spot, aided by the Congress Party bosses' mistaken impression that she would be a figurehead they could manipulate. On the contrary, Frank shows Prime Minister Gandhi prompted by her deep fear of disorder toward increasingly authoritarian acts, most notoriously the state of emergency declared in 1975, when she authorized the arrest of many opposition leaders. Frank depicts Gandhi as having more faith in her personal bond with the Indian people than in the messy workings of democracy. But the religious and political divisions inflamed by her policies came home to roost in 1984, when she was assassinated by her own bodyguard, a Sikh enraged by the massacre of militant Sikhs in the Golden Temple. This sympathetic but unsparing portrait makes it clear that Gandhi was a flawed leader but evinces compassion for a woman striving with a difficult personal and political legacy. --Wendy Smith
Book Description
On the morning of October 31, 1984, as she walked through her garden, smiling, with hands raised and palms pressed together in the traditional Indian namaste greeting, Indira Nehru Gandhi was assassinated by her own bodyguards. She died as she had lived, surrounded by men, yet isolated. It was a violent end to a life of epic drama.
Here is the first popular biography of one of the world's most influential leaders, India's third prime minister. Brought up during an era that saw the rise of Indian nationalism, Indira was raised to be what her father, Jawaharlal Nehru, called "a child of revolution" - destined to play a political role in the creation and governing of an independent India. Despite her early reluctance to embrace this role, Indira eventually presided over a huge, complex, religiously riven, and male-dominated country. She was born to a wealthy, westernized family, but she had a gift for connecting with the poor of the countryside and the urban slums, the illiterate, the dispossessed - so much so that "Indira is India" became a familiar slogan. Throughout childhood, love, marriage, imprisonment, motherhood, and a sequence of personal and family tragedies, her personal hopes and desires were continually subsumed by the historical and political imperatives of her country.
In this beautifully written book, the acclaimed biographer Katherine Frank draws on unpublished sources and more than a hundred interviews to create a rich, balanced portrait. INDIRA captures in full color the personal and political fate of the leader of the world's largest democracy - the woman who played a dominant role in the history of the twentieth century and who, when it ended, was voted Woman of the Millennium by the BBC.
Customer Reviews:
Was the author denied an interview with Maneka Gandhi?.......2007-06-23
It may very well be that Sonia cared for Maneka's child during the day, and Indira slept with him by night, but before painting this uncaring picture of Maneka, did Katherine attempt to get the other side of the story?
Even if she had been refused an interview, perhaps she should have attempted to give her readers a third-party (her own?) view of what was probably transpiring in the Nehru-Gandhi household (as she does in numerous other places), rather than passing along what is probably Sonia Gandhi's view of the situation.
Or perhaps Katherine didn't really care whether she maligned Maneka, the not-so-powerful politician?
A "tragic" life.......2006-08-26
This is a very good account of Indira Gandhi's life. I felt very sad after reading it. I knew already about her life and politics as being an Indian. But this book gave me a very comprehensive account of her life, except her last couple of years, which I think were
hurried. I think that spicy tidbits of alleged affairs about her, Nehru and her husband should have been avoided as they distract from the larger point and have given her worshippers an excuse to discount the book. Description of India's early life before she became the Prime Minister is very engaging. You can see how the seeds of her later-day paranoia and siege mentality were sown during her unhappy childhood and her estrangement with her husband. You feel sad that in the end that privileged upbringing, lots of potential, education at the best schools and colleges and tutoring by her father in democratic traditions did not amount to much. She achieved little and destroyed much.
It is amazing that in a vibrant democracy, she was able to undermine every political institution, which is essential for a democracy. How she instigated conflicts in Assam, Kashmir and Punjab. How she shamelessly went around dismissing democratically elected state govts and playing one group against another. How she let loose her son, Sanjay as an extra-constitutional authority to subvert judiciary and beaurocracy. She surrounded herself with sycophants and boot-lickers. In her own words, she herself admits, "men who may not be very bright but on whom I can rely"? Only bright spot in her career was the liberation Bangladesh. She used every weapon available to stay in the power. In the end, the forces she helped unleashed consumed her. Even her son Rajiv who became Prime Minister after her violent death was killed Srilankan Tamil Tigers whom she nourished. It might seem like a poetic justice in the end but India was/is the big loser having lost so much and still fighting those forces.
History will not be kind to her and I hope that Indian people would not let another Indira immerge on the political scene.
Great Read.......2005-04-05
This is one of the best biographies on Indira Gandhi. Most of the other books on indira authored by Indian journalists tend to focus primarily on her political activities with a brief summary of her childhood and adult years. This is by far the most comprehensive attempt at combining the various threads and presenting the story of a normal human being. Katherine's description of Indira's years at Anand Bhawan, Europe, marriage to Feroze read like a best seller fiction. Meticulous research, analysis and an objective attempt to understand the influences in Indira's life prior to her prime ministership is the hallmark.
Missing is the analysis in understanding why a shy, reserved person longing for anonymity suddenly craves for power, and seeks power with scant regard for the institutions set-up by her father, leaders she grew up with. Going by Indira's example,I am disappointed that despite having the best role models (Gandhi, Nehru), best education ( shantiniketan, finishing schools, oxford), global exposure, immense wealth, Indira in her latter years behaved very much like an average middle class Mother, the book unfortunately fails to provide a rationale for this abnormal behavior.
Still a great attempt from a non-indian to understand and piece together the life of the most charismatic and powerful Indian leader in the last 30 years.
Indira and India.......2004-08-28
This is a thorough and critical account of the life of Indira Gandhi, concentrating on her early life and her relationship with her father Jawaharlal Nehru, then on to her time a Prime Minister, the Emergency of 1975-77, the influence of her son Sanjay, and finally her violent death.
The author gives great detail of Indira's childhood and privileged upbringing: it seemed a lonely childhood and adolescence. The close bonds with her father seemed to make her marriage with Feroze Gandhi next to impossible. Franks is highly critical of the baleful influence of Sanjay Gandhi and of Indira for being blind to his faults.
It was interesting that the author quickly dismisses any notion of Indira Gandhi as a conviction politician: the exercise of power seemed a sufficient driving force for her, to the extent that democratic values were dispensible.
I thought that this book is as important an account of post-1947 Indian politics as it is a biography of Indira Gandhi (the two seemed to be closely linked). A good read for all that.
G Rodgers
Indira is no more.......2003-08-17
Result of an obviously (too) meticulous study, the book reveals a very objective account of one of the leading female figures of the world... The emphasis is not limited to her political life and therefore you understand almost all underlying motives in her most absurd decisions. Throughout the book, you both love and hate Indira Nehru Gandhi but most of the time, you pity her for the life she, afterall, did not really wanted to have but couldn't refuse either... There is struggle, war, peace, politics, Byzantine games, democracy, dictatorship but happiness in this life....

Book Description
In this timely and important work, John Esposito and John Voll explore the development of contemporary Islamic movements and thought through the biographies of nine major activist intellectuals who represent a wide range of Muslim societies. Many Muslims have combined revivalist activism with intellectual efforts, but only a few have achieved significant international visibility and influence. By examining the lives and work of nine such internationally recognized figures, Esposito and Voll provide a new understanding of the intellectual foundations of contemporary Islamic awareness and politics. Included are profiles of: Ismail Ragi al-Faruqi (U.S./Palestine), Khurshid Ahmad (India/Pakistan), Maryam Jameelah (U.S./Pakistan), Hasan Hanafi (Sudan), Rashid Ghannoushi (Tunisia), Hasan al-Turabi (Sudan), Abdolkarim Soroush (Iran), Anwar Ibrahim (Malaysia), and Abdurrahman Wahid (Indonesia). These thinkers contributed to some of the most significant intellectual and activist developments in the Muslim world during the 1980s and 1990s--the period during which Islamic movements became a major force in Muslim societies and international affairs. They helped to organize and lead the movements of Islamic renewal and provided the conceptual foundations for the programs those movements advocate. Together, they represent a distinctive phase in the evolution of Islamic thinking: the ongoing effort to create an effective synthesis of modernity and Islamic tradition. Their work supplies the core of the Islamic resurgence of the1990s and the foundation for what it can become in the twenty-first century.

Shaping Islamic Discourse.......2002-07-28
At present, John Esposito and John Voll are probably the most prominent writers on things Islamic in the United States. Both pair a sound academic grounding in religious studies with the ability to provide readable and balanced accounts on current affairs and important intellectual trends in the Islamic world. In 'Makers of Contemporary Islam' they present a number of Islamic thinker-activists - some of whom are quite controversial - in an empathic manner.
In composing this book the authors have tried to strike a balance between 'pure' intellectuals and political activists. In addition to that they have endeavored to ensure a fair geographical spread as well, by including representatives from North Africa, the Arab Middle East, Iran, the Indian Subcontinent, and Southeast Asia.
In their introductory chapter Esposito and Voll give an account of the role of the intellectual in society. This issue is addressed from both a historical and cross-cultural perspective. The writers have also included a typology of the intellectual in Islamic society: distinguishing between traditional religious scholars (the so-called Ulama), secular thinkers, and modern Muslim activist intellectuals. While the relative influence of the first group has been on the decline ever since the arrival of modernity in the Islamic world, the second group was discredited and soon overtaken by the Islamists following the defeat of the Arabs by Israel in 1967.
The authors have emphasized the subtleties in the thought of the Islamists treated in this volume. It is made clear that all these thinkers take a critical stand towards their own cultural heritage and share an interest in dialogue and intellectual exchange with other cultures. This way a much-needed counterweight is provided for the commonly held image of Islamists as narrow-minded radical fanatics and extremists bound on a violent-ridden collision course with the West.
The Arab Middle East is represented by a Palestinian scholar of religion, Ismail al-Faruqi, and the Egyptian philosopher Hasan Hanafi. These two thinkers share a rigorous academic training in both Islamic studies and western philosophy. Al-Faruqi, who has spent his academic career mainly in North America, was very apt at representing Islamic thought in western philosophic jargon, which may greatly contribute to its accessibility for western thinkers. In addition to that he has written penetrating books on important Islamic concepts such as the tawhid - de absolute unity of God. Al-Faruqi has also been engaged in comparative religious studies. Hanafi is a very prolific writer who has spent time in France and the United States. His most important contributions are his treatment of the concept of 'heritage' and the introduction of the phenomenon of 'the Islamic Left': a strand of Islamism that endeavors to translate critical thought into action.
The account on Hasan al-Turabi, a leading Sudanese Islamist, is focussed more on subject's political career than his philosophy as such. Probably this is due to the fact that the authors have based themselves predominantly on earlier research conducted for the State Department. Yet again, their account is more nuanced than the usual - overly facile - qualification of Sudanese Islamism as state-sponsored terrorism. Yet they never become apologetic and clearly point out that Turabi has indeed not shied away from associating with the country's repressive regimes in order to pursue his own agenda. Esposito and Voll point out that the real influence of Turabi has by and large been limited to the local Sudanese political experience. In the intellectual field however his writings have been - and continue to be - very influential throughout the Islamic world.
The Tunisian Rachid Ghannoushi fits in a similar mold. Probably intellectually the least powerful, he has been instrumental in articulating the importance of dialogue between 'culture zones', in order to find ways to borrow from each other's achievements and yet retain cultural authenticity.
Moving further east we encounter the Pakistani economist Khurshid Ahmad, who has been involved in both the development of an Islamic theory of economics and the actual application thereof during his years as a cabinet member and government adviser. Khurshid Ahmad is also a key-figure in Pakistan's Jamaat-i-Islami, whose founder Mawlana al-Mawdudi has been extremely influential for the formation of Ahmad's thought and the furthering of his political career.
A very interesting figure is the Iranian Abdolkarim Soroush (pen name of Hossein Dabbagh). A pharmacologist-turned-philosopher of science, he has been able to remain at the core of Iran's Revolutionary establishment and yet maintain a controversial stand regarding the impact of Islam on science and politics. In this respect he takes an interesting position through his distinction between religion and 'knowledge of religion', which is very much informed by his expertise in textual studies and profound understanding of poetics. Maybe most surprising is Soroush negative attitude towards Iran's 'Mullahcracy'.
Two of Southeast Asia's most influential islamically oriented politicians are also included in this book. Not only do they share a common cultural-geographic origin and rather similar outlook, but both have also fallen from political grace. Anwar Ibrahim, a former Malaysian Deputy Prime Minister and anointed successor of Mahathir, is serving a long-term prison sentence for alleged corruption and sexual misconduct. Abdurrahman Wahid, long-time leader of the Nahdatul Ulama (NU), was impeached as president of Indonesia and forced to resign.
The only female in this book is Maryam Jameelah; an American woman of Jewish extraction, who decided to embrace Islam and has since then made a name as a writer on traditional Islamic values. I wonder if the authors could not have identified another female intellectual, who is more representative for women Islamists.
In conclusion, 'Makers of Contemporary Islam' is an informed and balanced contribution to the growing body of books on the role of Islam in defining relations between cultures and in international politics.

Real life adventures of a great cop.......2007-02-19
It was only by accident that I found the author and this book. When I saw
that he was writing about some of his experiences when he was "on the job"
I knew that I had to get this book. Not only is this book well written but I know first hand about some of his cases because I was a brand new trooper and SP Kingston was my first assignment in 1975. It was because of Senior Investigator Wayne "Rodney" Beyea that I became a very conscientious and thorough criminal investigator and eventually a Senior
Investigator. If anything he down plays his role in some of these exciting cases. Even today, as I relate some "war stories" to my friends I always mention the author's role in my development as a trooper. I have nothing but admiration and respect for this author as a storyteller, an author and a "troopers trooper". Well done Rodney, well done. I've learned even more after reading this book. (Ski)
Reflections From The Shield.......2003-04-03
Once I picked up Reflections From The Shield I knew I better give notice to my family that dinners might be late and household duties would probably be put on hold...because I just couldn't put this book down! Mr Beyea invites the reader into his life...making this book come alive with action, intrigue, humor, and the human touch...real life stuff! I felt like I was "right there", personally involved in these criminal sketches, humorous insights, physical challenges, and the myriad of situations and that this book uncovers. Also, each chapter of this book is able to pretty much stand alone, which made it easy for me to say to someone..."Here, you just HAVE to read this chapter!", without me having to give up the book for longer than I was willing to be without it! I am very enthused about getting the follow-up book by Mr Beyea! I definitely give this book a 5 star rating!
Arizona and NY Reader.......2002-05-23
"Reflections From The Shield" by Author Wayne Beyea is an outstanding autobiography. It is a book that can be read by able readers and the journey that you will take is a rare one in this complex society. You'll soon find out that "Donuts" are not the comedial substance. The gauntlet runs from Larceny to murder(homicide) and Retd Senior Investigator Beyea is there in your face with his able associates showing you first hand what it is to be a law enforcement officer charged with a responsibility that pulls on your nerve endings. This is the real world folks without the glamour of the television screen.
The author threads the love he has for his family throughout the story line. He displays his compassion for people as a gentleman and performs his sworn duties with dignity.
This retd. officer looks you in the eye and tells you how it is. This book CONTAINS ALL THE EMOTIONS FROM HUMOR TO HORRIFIC CRIMES. When I started reading this book of 533 Pages I could not put it down. Congratulations Author Beyea!! A Great Read!!
I learned a great deal from your literary efforts.

I joke among my friends -- who are almost all obsessed with making it big in the computer industry or the music business -- that Seattle is the land of Microsoft, Microbreweries, and Microcelebrities. David Shields, best known for his novels such as
Dead Languages, has written a droll, sometime hilarious, and consistently important factual fiction about this pathological passion for celebrity.
Remote seems to be based on the Socratic dictum that the unexamined life is not worth living. But unlike elitist social critics, Shields has had the courage to examine his own fascination with fame, instead of pointing an accusing finger at "them", whoever "they" might be. Like Neil Postman in
Amusing Ourselves to Death, Shields seems to argue that it is we ourselves who are to blame for the cargo cult of fame, in which outriggers have been replaced by remote controls as the carriage of choice. Without worshippers, there cannot be deities -- and without channel surfers, there cannot be celebrities.
Book Description
In this truly one-of-a-kind book, the author/narrator-a representative, in extremis, of contemporary American obsession with beauty, celebrity, transmitted image-finds himself suspended, fascinated, in the remoteness of our wall-to-wall mediascape. It is a remoteness that both perplexes and enthralls him.
Through dazzling sleight of hand in which the public becomes private and the private becomes public, the entire book-clicking from confession to family-album photograph to family chronicle to sexual fantasy to pseudo-scholarly footnote to reportage to personal essay to stand-up comedy to cultural criticism to literary criticism to film criticism to prose-poem to litany to outtake-becomes both an anatomy of American culture and a searing self-portrait.
David Shields reads his own life-reads our life-as if it were an allegory about remoteness and finds persuasive, hilarious, heartbreaking evidence wherever he goes.
Customer Reviews:
The Little Things.......2003-07-14
This book will be of interest to those who notice the little things in life, the things that are hard to miss but always get looked over. Saying what people want to say but may be too afraid to, Shields' book is bold and truthful about the world. The minute detail that instances of his own past and the cultural past of America that are investigated in this book are thought-provoking. A book that anyone could relate to, "Remote" points out the absurdity of everyday life. The everyday things that we all notice but don't quite register are here in this American critique. A book for anyone who has a family, is American, is a subject of humanity will relate to and revel in this insightful quest for resolution, and feel comfort in the fact that we are not alone.
Fascinating Read...should be back in print.......2001-01-15
This is a wonderful and at times wonderous book. Some terrific passages about our celebrity driven culture and our "remoteness." Some of the book is hilarious, some it is sad. I especially liked the section about the allure of women in glasses. Brillant. The passage about David "NYPD Blue" Milch is powerful. Autobiography or allegory or both, this book is unlike anything you have read or will read. It deserves another life back in print.
David Shields' Remote; a memoir of media separateness.......1998-09-16
In "Remote", David Shields tells his own story through the printed and recorded parts of America. One of Shields' central themes is the difference between life and virtual-life: major events in his memory are linked directly to some form of media. His story is based on "almost fame," or as a frequent title explains, "the nimbus of her fame makes a nullity of us all." The idea of media remoteness is explored in amazingly honest detail, often with humor and a delicious taste of irony at the ridiculous. Through his obsession with "the filmed familiar," Oprah, America's Funniest Home Videos, and anecdotes too numerous to mention, Mr. Shields' essays capture the confusion and separateness that America feels at the power of its entertainment industry. This book is a must for anyone who claims to be media-savvy or enjoys a concise, entertaining and intelligent autobiography. There isn't much that this book doesn't cover, but much more impressive is the advice that it manages to suggest. As Mr. Shields' observations add another dimension to your understanding of this world, you'll find yourself underlining and circling while smiling drily.

Imagine (Deluxe Edition)
ASIN: 0140274332 |
Book Description
Imagine: John Lennon, authorized by Yoko Ono and drawn extensively from material in the late Beatle's personal archives, is more than a tribute to his timeless legacy. Rare film footage, photographs, and the words of family and friends--plus a wealth of Lennon's own quintessential wit and candor--paint a uniquely intimate portrait of the man behind the legend. Here is the poignant story of the tough Liverpool kid who conquered the world with his music, from childhood through dank Hamburg and Liverpool clubs to Beatlemania, from global fame and wealth to a never-ending search for fulfillment as an artist and a man. It charts his loves--for his first wife, Cynthia; his sons, Julian and Sean; and his great collaborator Yoko Ono--and his passions, art, music, and above all his work for peace. From Lennon the performer, in spectacular shots by the world's top rock photographers, to Lennon the lover, father, and human being in intimate family photographs (many never-before published), Imagine captures the man who was the touchstone for his generation. Originally published as the companion to a film biography of Lennon, the book is a handsome tribute to his life and art, and will make an elegant gift for Beatles fans and all admirers of John Lennon's music and imagination.

Beautiful Book!.......2001-02-22
All I can say is that this book is the best I've ever owned on any member of the Beatles. Jammed full of pictures and a detailed bio, this book is everything that you need to know about John Lennon's life, work, and social standings. I give it an A++++. Forwarded by Yoko Ono.
A Big, Beautiful Book.......2000-10-16
The perfect coffee-table book for fans of John Lennon and his music. Lots of lovely photos and illustrations, plus commentary from Lennon & those closest to him. Includes a very useful chronology & dscography. Highly recommended, as is the film upon which it is based.
I loved it!.......1999-01-10
This is really a great book. It gave me allot of facts. Not just about the working John but also the person John Lennon. The picuters are big and very well taken. It's pictures we have seen before from the Beatles time. But also pictures from his personal life with his sons and wives. It's a wonderful book and a great tribution to John. I loved it.

i was soooo disapointed in this piece!!! i looove the song imagine, and i have heard many others play this piece. this should not be a level intermediate. it should definately be beginner. it is super easy, and so much more could be given to this piece. this arrangement butchered it.
