The First Encyclopedic Reference¿For Both Financial Managers and Investors¿On the Exploding Yet Uncharted World of Credit Derivatives. New products seem to hit the financial markets on a monthly, or even daily, basis. Yet it is rare that one emerges with immediate value and undiscovered potential for both financial risk managers and investors¿and even rarer that the many nuances and benefits of this product can be explained in one book. Credit derivatives are that tool¿and THE HANDBOOK OF CREDIT DERIVATIVES is that book. This unmatched collection of expertise provides a complete picture of the credit derivatives marketplace: what they are, where they come from, and specific strategies for both risk managers and investors to use them to their greatest advantage. Starting with a comprehensive overview, this encyclopedic reference goes on to explain; Efficient strategies for profitably using credit derivatives as either investment or risk management tools; Specific challenges and solutions in the pricing of credit derivatives, from the perspectives of both buyer and issuer; Techniques to estimate the probability that a corporate credit will default; Up-to-the-minute accounting and tax practices for recognizing and reporting transactions. Whether you are a professional risk manager seeking to hedge your risk exposure, or a cutting-edge investor looking for new and profitable markets, the guidance of the industry's leading experts in THE HANDBOOK OF CREDIT DERIVATIVES provides in-depth, expert analysis of these multi-faceted financial structures, written by the most influential figures in this still-developing field.

3 out of 5 stars A Beginning, But No More.......2001-07-06

This is another book in the Frank Fabozzi vein, being a compendium of articles written by practitioners in the field and loosely strung together by the editors. As a very basic introduction, it is not bad - there are discussions of the rationale for using credit derivatives, a cursory introduction to pricing and modelling, and very general discussions of issues relating to accounting, documentation, taxes, etc. The best chapter is "Credit Derivatives Pricing Dictionary," by Hardy M. Hodges, which provides definitions of some of the most important concepts and would stand quite well on its own. However, if you expect something more than generalities, you will be disappointed. There is very little by way of practical advice on structuring, modelling or other "nuts and bolt' issues. This book will teach you enough to get past the HR department, but if you want to get on the trading desk you had better look elsewhere!

2 out of 5 stars Outdated.....and there are better alternatives available........2000-03-23

Outdated is the only word that comes to my mind when thinking about this book. It has been edited by a finance professor who is painfully slow at solving simple mathematical equations, and I had the misfortune of having him as an instructor in Advanced Investment Analysis class. I later dropped the class, after I couldn't take any more.

Surprisingly, the content of the book is not so bad, except that the authors/editors/compilers have left out the analytical part, which is very essential to understanding derivative securities. Just learning about the structures of the instruments doesn't give a reader an ability to apply them to real-life situations. Since it is a handbook, it must carry all aspects of the subject so that the readers can use them in every possible way of reference.

Standing alone, the book is fairly decent, and I would have given it more stars, had it not been for the better alternatives available on the market. This book, as it stands now, should be skipped. If you just want to gain the peripheral knowledge on credit derivatives, log onto the internet, and search for documents. There is tonnes of information on derivative securities and their working. In fact, you might be able to find more relevant material on the web for free than this book offers you.

As an alternative, you may want to look into:

      *Credit Derivatives, by Janet Tavakoli.
*Credit Derivatives, by Satyajit Das. THIS IS THE BEST BOOK AVAILABLE, AND COVERS ANALYTICAL DETAILS ADEQUATELY.

5 out of 5 stars The chapter authors are the whos-who of credit derivatives........1999-08-06

Commercial bankers, investment bankers, financial lawyers, finance professors, and (at least) one accountant who were in on the creation of credit derivatives during the mid-1990s author chapters that are non-mathematical. (Well, I guess Harvard Business School Professor Sanjiv Das's credit derivatives pricing chapter is kind of mathematical.) Each chapter author is expert in the aspect of credit derivatives about which they write. Every commercial banker in the world should read up on this subject.

1 out of 5 stars A mishmash of contributed work. When will they learn?.......1999-07-28

This is another frustrating book with chapters submitted by various contributers. It's difficult to follow any cohesive logic to this book. Call this a Bible if you consider multiple authors a criterion, but as an information storehouse, this book is no better than reading a series of disconnected magazine articles.

      5 out of 5 stars A must-read for any financial professional!.......1999-07-09

The authors provide the reader with a reference manual for this new financial product. If you need a "Credit Derivative Bible" -- this is the book you want.

        Book Description

The Boston Research Center for the 21st Century is pleased to announce the publication of Subverting Greed: Religious Perspectives on the Global Economy (Orbis Books, November 2002, in association with the BRC). This multi-author volume grew out of the BRC's consideration of the impact of globalization and other economic justice issues (1999-2001). This focus culminated in a conference and lecture series in 2001 entitled Economics for Human Well-Being: Advancing a People's Agenda. With this foundation in mind, Subverting Greed offers an "interfaith dialogue on paper" focused on one of the most urgent issues of our time: corporate-driven globalization.

Insightful essays by distinguished religious scholars--who are also practitioners of the religious traditions they represent--consider the impact of globalization as they seek to shed light on their own tradition's concerns, define common problems, and propose common solutions. It is clear from the range of essays that all religious traditions have structures and teachings designed to distribute resources and mitigate greed, though several contributors acknowledge the difficulty of applying ancient teachings to modern life. For some, there is a fine line between prosperity and greed. As Ameer Ali says in his chapter entitled Globalization and Greed: A Muslim Perspective, "Islam is not against profit motive, the cardinal principle of free-market ideology; but it is not willing to allow profit motive to determine human progress." Others, like David Loy in Pave the Planet, or Wear Shoes? A Buddhist Perspective on Greed and Globalization, critique neoclassical economics as they connect the issue of greed to deeper issues of kindness, generosity, and wisdom. Still others raise concerns of sustainability and the shared resource of Planet Earth. In this regard, Sallie McFague's essay, God's Household: Christianity, Economics, and Planetary Living, identifies two world views: neoclassical economics and ecological economics, each of which has different "house rules." As McFague so aptly demonstrates, "The reason economics is so important, why it is a religious and ecological issue, is that it is not just a matter of money; rather, it is a matter of survival and flourishing."

Co-editor Paul Knitter's Introduction ends with a series of questions: "In their different diagnoses of the global market, in their varying remedies that they draw from their own traditions, can they [the voices of Subverting Greed] sing together? Of course, singing together would not mean singing the same tune. Whatever harmony might be possible, it would be polyphonic. Do the religions offer a polyphonic, contrasting, yet harmonizing message for those who are in charge of the global economic system, and/or for those who are struggling to understand or reform it? Can the religious communities of the world form any kind of a common front from which to engage the global market?"

Thus, while no definitive conclusions are reached, the deep experience and thoughtful prose of the contributors to this important volume go a long way toward framing the questions that must be answered if religious communities and economic systems are to function with integrity. In the end, as co-editor Chandra Muzaffar's Conclusion suggests, the injustice of the global economy is a spiritual and moral issue that each individual must deal with in order for a collective solution to be found.

4 out of 5 stars One approach to justice for all........2003-03-20

The writers of this collection of essays may represent different religions, but they represent one thought: globalization is bad. Their idea is not so much to subvert greed but to subvert capitalism, which they would see as being the same thing. This is less about personal responsibility than corporate greed. On the surface, while the essayists may be coming from various points of view, in fact, they have one. Far from promoting diversity and having a dialogue, this book does the opposite. It tells but one story, and one side of that story. It says that capitalism causes poverty, and that something else must take its place. All right. So, what is it? And how will it work?

In the last 200 years, many religious groups have tried to start their own economic societies, usually based on some kind of communalism. And most of these have disappeared. The grand experiment of the Soviet Union and other forms of forced communalism also collapsed from their own weaknesses and failings.

What these writers offer is the usual Ivory Tower approach, somehow trying to persuade or even force the rest of us into their way of thinking and living. All without a lot of details of how this would work out for Joe and Jane Lunchbucket in Peoria.

As I noted, this is less about individual greed and more about the effect, real and perceived of large international companies. I offer three reasons that the writers shy away from individual accountability. First, if ordinary people really read this kind of stuff, they might begin to feel threatened, and they might get politically involved and start to speak up for themselves. The Ivory Towerists loathe that. They want a world run by "experts" like themselves. Second, someone might ask about individual and local responsibility in poor countries. As in, what are they doing about it, besides waiting for the next handout, or the next bit of graft? Then, finally, they're great with the ideas, but poor in the execution. Either they haven't thought that far, cannot see that far, or don't want to let us, the unwashed, in on their Grand Plans.

This is a must read for those who look around and see world poverty and ask what we could do about it. This book is important because it represents a very powerful idea that is widely popular among academics and "anti-poverty" activists. We need to know what everyone is thinking in this area, and not just read stuff that we agree with.

        Book Description

In Central and Eastern Europe, the 'Old Europe' of cobblestones co-exists with mobile phones, horse carts fight for road space with cars, and farmers' markets compete with mega-stores.

Western business professionals hoping to expand or start up new ventures in this complex environment must possess knowledge that is both comprehensive and subtle. What is it like to live and work in Central and Eastern Europe? How is business conducted there? What happened in Central and Eastern Europe to make integration into the rest of Europe so difficult? What important social and cultural issues must be mastered by Westerners hoping to flourish in this region? 'Succeeding in Business in Central and Eastern Europe', the fourteenth title in the 'Managing Cultural Differences Series' answers these and many other questions.

This book identifies a variety of factors, including an anti-business attitude and a resistance to Western-style change, that hinder some attempts at development within Central and Eastern Europe. It provides a frame of reference for understanding the "post-Soviet syndrome" - with its remnants of corruption and mistrust of managers and customers alike - that continues to haunt the countries of CEE. Dr. Sears and Ms. Tamulionyte-Lentz give readers solutions for overcoming the problems inherent in this region. They explain how Western executives can build relationships and find point of cultural "synthesis" with their Central and Eastern European counterparts and ultimately create a new and mutually beneficial work culture with their ventures.

With understanding and insights on the cultural nuances of the region, 'Succeeding in Business in Central and Eastern Europe' can help all Western visitors, even tourists, who arrive at this increasingly popular destination.

This is a hands on vade mecum for doing business in Eastern Europe. The dangers may lead to pessimism, but the authors are showing that with good will and persistence one may succeed against all odds.

          Book Description

Like the majority of the founders of large philanthropic foundations in the United States, James B. Duke assumed that the Duke Endowment, which he established in 1924, would continue its charitable activity forever. Lasting Legacy to the Carolinas is an examination of the history of this foundation and the ways in which it has—and has not—followed Duke’s original design.
In this volume, Robert F. Durden explores how the propriety of linking together a tax-free foundation and an investor-owned, profit-seeking business like the Duke Power Company has significantly changed over the course of the century. Explaining the implications of the Tax Reform Act of 1969 for J. B. Duke’s dream, Durden shows how the philanthropist’s plan to have the Duke Endowment virtually own and ultimately control Duke Power (which, in turn, would supply most of the Endowment’s income) dissolved after the death of daughter Doris Duke in 1993, when the trustees of the Endowment finally had the unanimous votes needed to sever that tie. Although the Endowment’s philanthropic projects—higher education (including Duke University), hospitals and health care, orphan and child care in both North and South Carolina, and the rural Methodist church in North Carolina—continue to be served, this study explains the impact of a century of political and social change on one man’s innovative charitable intentions. It is also a testimony to the many staff members and trustees who have invested their own time and creative energies into further benefiting these causes, despite decades of inevitable challenges to the Endowment.
This third volume of Durden’s trilogy relating to the Dukes of Durham will inform not only those interested in the continuing legacy of this remarkable family but also those involved with philanthropic boards, charitable endowments, medical care, child-care institutions, the rural church, and higher education.

            Book Description

This book is the first comprehensive source for the Space Politics and Policies of the United States Civil, Military, Intelligence, and Commercial Space Programs.

Space Politics and Policy: An Evolutionary Perspective provides a comprehensive survey of Space Policy. This book is organized around two themes. Space Policy is evolutionary in that it has responded to dramatic political events, such as the launching of Sputnik and the Cold War, and has undergone dynamic and evolutionary policy changes over the course of the space age. Space Policy is an integral part of and interacts with public policy processes in the United States and abroad.

The book analyzes Space Policy at several levels including historical context, political actors and institutions, political processes and policy outcomes. It examines the symbiotic relationships between policy, technology, and science; provides a review and synthesis of the existing body of knowledge in Space Policy; and identifies Space Policy trends and developments from the beginnings of the space age through the current era of the twenty-first century.

The book is intended for those interested in Space Policy, especially Space Policy decision-makers, program and project managers, as well as students and lecturers of Space Policy.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent Primer to Space Policy.......2006-01-01

Space Politics and Policy is an essential reading to any student of space policy. The essays are well written and
concise. Careful reading of the book will provide greater context and depth to understanding more contemporary space literature. Dr. Eligar Sadeh's introduction should be kept in the forefront of the reader's mind to gain greater insight of the subsequent essays by various renowed personalities in the field.

5 out of 5 stars great textbook for space policy.......2005-12-16

Quick disclaimer in that I used this text book while attending a course led by the author in prepublished addition in 2002. That being said, I still feel to this day, 3 years later that this book is a good source for understanding the players involved in space exploration. I've referred back to it more than a few times throughout my career as someone involved in doing business with the government. 5 out of 5 stars Very Important Historical Contribution.......2000-12-22

Ravensbruck stood out among German concentration camps as gender specific: only women were imprisoned there. Perhaps for this reason, it has suffered from historical neglect, despite the fact that its inmates were often extremely important members of resistance movements in France, Germany and throughout Europe. By translating this extremely important memoir of Nanda Herbermann, known and taught widely in Germany, the Baers have made an important first step in telling the history of Ravensbruck. Baer's scholarly introduction frames the memoir from many angles--women in the holocaust, the new woman, the Catholic Church and the Nazis and wartime resistance. This is an important book for scholars of the twentieth century, and would make an excellent choice for teaching Nazi Germany, the Second World War and the Holocaust. It would also fit well in courses on women's autobiography.

                                5 out of 5 stars A Different Perspective.......2000-11-01

What do you think of whenever you hear the word, "Holocaust?" If you are like me, you think of German concentration camps and the Jews. It came as a complete surprise to me that Roman Catholic Aryan German could land in one of their "own"camps. This is exactly what happened to Nanda Herbermann, a German living in Munster. As an editor and writer for The Grail, her parish publication, Herbermann and parish priest, Father Muckermann, were part of the German, Catholic resistance to the Nazis. For this, Muckermann was forced to flee Germany; Herbermann was eventually arrested by the Gestapo and incarcerated at Ravensbruck, a concentration camp for women. In her own words, penned in "The Blessed Abyss, Inmate #6582 in Ravensbruck Concentration Camp for Women," we receive from Herbermann a detailed account of the horrors of her daily life, but from a very different perspective than Jewish accounts. Here is a woman who was brought up as an Aryan, with Aryan views, who slowly softens and revises her attitude toward Jews, lesbians, prostitutes and all other minorities imprisoned in Ravensbruck as she is thrown in among them and faced with the realities of their mutual hardships. Her incredulity that this is happening to her, that these atrocities are committed by her beloved, fellow Germans is a crushing blow. It is truly her faith that carries her through these daily "stations of the cross." This compelling reading is enhanced by Hester and Elizabeth Baer's meticulously written Preface and Introduction. Here she provides the reader with a detailed history of the Catholic Church's involvement with the Nazis, Herbermann's life and family, and a provocative discussion of women and the Holocaust. This is truly eye-opening, ground breaking reading that I consider imperative to any scholar of the Holocaust or someone who wants to read "the rest of the story."
