This is the classic work on how to practice ethically for psychologists who engage in clinical work, teaching, research, administration, or any other domain of professional activity. Not only does if offer a thorough review of the literature on ethical behavior, it provides a truly detailed analysis of how the ethics code applies to a vast range of contexts, client types, and vexing clinical dilemmas. What's more, the book is filled with interesting, and sometimes entertaining case vignettes--many of them based on actual ethical complaints. No other book on the market for psychologists offers this combination of clarity and thoroughness. It is a must for the library of any serious psychology graduate student or psychologist. When I teach Ethics at the graduate level, it is the only text I require.

Practicing Therapists "Must Read" Each Year.......2001-03-31

Ethics in Psychology is a graduate level textbook on the subject of ethical dilemmas in counseling. The authors definitely meet their goal in exploring the APA's Ethical guidelines and applying them pratically to the practicing therapist and academic. Their use of humorous "psuedo-psychologists" illustrate well the problem of many counselors who get themselves into ethical dilemmas each year innocently. I believe every therapist and academic should read this book at least once a year in order to minimize the ethical issues that are a part of everyday practice. Non-APA practitioners may find the book slanted toward doctoral-level therapists being the minimum for competence but there is great wisdom in this book.

This book is a must-have for the counselor or the counseling graduate student. Each section of the Code of Ethics is set forth with two applicable examples. One example is the "do" and one example is the "don't." These examples clarify the Code and make it much more understandable.

Written both for funders and grantees already in the field and those just beginning to fund nontraditional activities, Social Change Philanthropy in America examines the experience, operational practices, and future prospects of philanthropists who have been involved in such activities over the past thirty years. Rabinowitz offers new insights into who the funders are and how they think, how funders actually make decisions, what types of grants are made, and the tax, political, and historical aspects of social change funding and its role in America's philanthropic system. Beginning with an introduction to the network of progressive social change funders and grantees and the philanthropic universe within which they operate, Rabinowitz goes on to analyze the flow of dollars through the nonprofit system. The next two sections present detailed portraits of social change funders and grantees. In part four, the author discusses whether grants for progressive social change are effective and worthwhile, whether grantees are sufficiently accountable, and whether funders and grantees are meeting each other's needs. Dr. Walter Turnbull shares not only the story of his upbringing and motivations, but he blends these lessons into the direction and fullfillment of the Boy's Choir of Harlem (BCH). This book is an intense look behind the faces, costumes and music of BCH. It reveals the intimate details of struggle of the members of the choir, the staff and ultimately the African-American/Latino males of our society at large. It forces the reader to look deeply into their own pysche and how one views his fellow man as well as himself. There are highs and lows throughout, but you never sense a moment of utter defeat! This is a triumphant wake-up call to all with regard to the potential of all our youth, if all are willing to pay the price for our dreams! A must read!

An invaluable reference book on a little known subject........1999-02-07

As you look at symphony orchestras around the United States, it is obvious that there is a lack of Black American participation within their ranks. It is even more clear that there are even fewer Black conductors. Dr. Handy has taken the time to throughly research those conductors who belong to the rare group. I was fortunate enough to be included in her list. When you see the credentials of the conductors that she has named, you can be sure that their education and experience equal those of any other racial group and often surpasses the qualifications of many non-Black conductors already leading major and/or metropolitan orchestras in the world. This is a problem that still has not been addressed by the managers and boards of orchestras today. In reading the biographies of these individuals, it becomes clear that many Black Conductors had to go to Europe to really gain recognition as musical directors. Dr. Handy does not just include classical music conductors. One forgets that many Black musicians in the so called "pop" field were often educated in the finest institutions in the classical world before they changed over to the popular musical field. Many did this for survival at first and then became successful artists in the genre. This book is an invaluable reference on a little known subject. Thank you Dr. Handy

A remarkable man who can tell his story with such courage........1998-03-07

Robert Ronald/Rosenthal has written in Last Train to Freedom with great clarity of his family's escape from Hitler and the catastrophe that was the Holocaust. Now a successful businessman who lives in Northern California with a family he loves deeply, Ronald has found the courage to relive and recount the heartbreak of losing his childhood home and his father to prison. He clearly conveys the terror of being a child always "on the run" with the enemy just behind. To his credit he manages to anchor his individual tale firmly in the historical setting and to give it a higher meaning as a parable of innocence and betrayal. He came of age in a world gone mad and is that remarkable man who can tell his story with courage and insight.

Absorbing first-person account of family's escape from Nazis.......1998-01-25

This book's author, a child when Hitler came to power, describes the series of moves by which his German-Jewish family escaped -- only just -- the Holocaust. Having moved to France in 1933, his father was interned in French concentration camps at the outbreak of war, because officially he was an enemy alien. When the Germans were at the outskirts of Paris in June 1940, the author and his mother and sisters managed to board the very last train leaving Paris for the south -- the actual train immortalized in fiction in the movie "Casablanca." They lived at Vichy, where the Under the conditions of the Armistice, the French agreed to turn over German refugees to the Nazis, thus leaving thousands of Jews trapped in the French concentration camps. With the help of a relative already in the U.S., the author's family was able to leave France in September 1941 -- almost the last boat available to refugees -- for Cuba. There the refugees arrived to a Rosh Hashanah feast provided by the local Jewish community. The author, then in his early teens, went to work as a diamond polisher and cutter in the shops of one of the diamond merchants evacuated from Holland and Belgium as those countries fell. His income kept the family fed through the war, and in 1946, they came to the U.S., where the author became a highly successful businessman.

The book provides valuable insight into the thinking of a well-educated, assimilated German-Jewish family as it tries to cope with a series of events that are turning its world upside down: the coming of the Nazis to Germany, the unexpected sudden defeat of France, and the closing of the net around the refugees from Germany. The difficulties of finding a place of haven are also illuminated.

Prticularly interesting and valuable is the way in which the book shows how psychologically difficult it was for many refugees to make the break from Europe. This is exemplified by the author's father, who, even on the boat carrying the family to the New World, was lamenting, "I only wish we were going the other way." His desire, unbelievable as it sounds today, was to return to German-occupied Paris. (If his wishes had prevailed, the whole family would have died in the gas chambers, as did several of his siblings.)

This book is a valuable addition to Holocaust literature, because it throws light on an aspect that it insufficiently written about: the practical and psychological difficulties of those trying to escape the Nazis in the days when no one could yet know, and few could imagine, the full dimensions of the horrors to come. How people viewed the magnitude of the danger seems in part a reflection of their own makeup: pessimistic vs. optimistic, realistic vs. tending toward denial.

The book is also a warm and often startlingly candid portrait of a family that is at the same time ordinary and extraordinary: quirky people, adjusting in very different ways to new circumstances. The stories it tells would be the material of fiction if it were not apparent that it is absolutely factual. Elegantly put together, with many photographs, the book is a pleasure to read and own.

A story of a family's successful escape from the Nazi invasion. A mother's relentless efforts to free herself and her family from the disaster facing them. This is the story of their journey to the United States narrowly escaping at each stop along the way. This story tells of the author's respect for traditions, the importance of family, the value of friendship, and his courage to see it happen. It was enjoyable to read a book of a Holocaust survivor with so much positive.
