Does a very good job of covering a large area. This book exhibits the best of the Lonely Planet series: a combination of facts, interesting suggestions, opinion and background information. Good maps and graphics. I like that camping suggestions are included for many places.

Lonely No More.......2005-09-10

Living in Australia, planning a road trip around the Southwest is not an easy consideration. I received this book and suddenly the Southwest was withing smelling distance. The reading is easy and expressive. I have a clear idea of where I will go and what I will do. No matter if I were travelling with children or on my own, I'd be clear about what is available to me. This will be the trip of a lifetime and this sensational book is a catalyst for my planning. Fully enjoyable, this book allows the magic of anticipation to grab me and give me colourful dreams.

Used It, Read It, Loved It........2005-07-31

This book was incredibly helpful to me. The maps are awesome. It's organized well. I hiked and did Route 66. The book was great for both. The table of contents is super accessible. Buy it and take it everywhere!

Authors don't like New Mexico.......2004-02-25

I purchased this book before a recent visit to Albuquerque, Santa Fe, and Taos. I lived in Albuquerque for 4 years about 6 years ago, but I hoped to find new insigts on places to eat, explore, etc. Basically the guidebook told me where not to go. It failed to mention some excellent restaurants in Albuquerque including The Dog House, Las Mananitas, Il Vicino, etc. In Santa Fe I attended a class at the Santa Fe School of Cooking which was a five star class - not mentioned in the guidebook. In Taos I visited a community of alternative homes constructed of tires and cement (earthships.com will explain more) - again not mentioned in the book. I did go to look at a ruin near Espanola that was recommended, but the reservation does not allow admittance.

Your standard LP book.......2003-07-02

I have recently encountered poor Lonely Planet books, but this was not one of them. It is the good old LP at work.
The coverage of Las Vegas, however, was extremely poor. I spent there 24 hours and this book didn't have enough info for even that short of a trip. The rest is great.
The California LP had twice as much info on Las Vegas.

An exceptional book.......2007-08-13

Couch potatoes should not write reviews for books intended for those of us who have the ambition to explore a region with our own two feet! This is an excellent book intended for an audience that wants to experience the Grand Canyon, not simply get out of the car and walk to a viewpoint and look at it. You do not need a guide book for that, the Park Service brochure is excellent and will be all that is required. Since the Grand Canyon is such a vast place, this guide book will be invaluable in helping you decide just how much you can experience in the time you have to spend here. And to help you determine just what you should attempt for your own physical condition! I highly recommend it for those interested in seeing and experiencing the Grand Canyon from other perspectives, in addition to the excellent viewpoints provided by the Natrional Park Service.

There really is too much hiking expected at the grand canyon. Are you really expected to hike to the bottom? Can't they built an escalator or some kind of teleportation device? Or at least make those airplane tours available to everyone! I had always heard so many great things about the grand canyon, but I never imagined that if I wanted more than taking pictures at the rim, physical exertion might be involved. Just take some pictures then split to go to Vegas. [and yeah I'm being ironic... if we wanna pan books, maybe we should recommend an alternative, else maybe we got in too deep...]

I bought this book before a family trip to the Grand Canyon. I thought I had looked around enough at different guide books but I was wrong. This book is fine if your Canyon trip is 100% hiking. Otherwise it is a bit thin and very dry. Not too helpful over all.

Barely Adequate.......2003-11-27

I have a long, entirely satisfying history using Lonely Planet Guides when I travel so I was unhappy to find that the Arizona edition was less helpful than expected on a recent road trip through The Grand Canyon State. My reason for purchasing a travel book solely devoted to Arizona was related to my intention to explore the state thoroughly with an eye toward possible relocation. Hoping for a wealth of detail on places to stay and eat in addition to general descriptions of areas of interest, as I toured both city and countryside I was surprised by a paucity of detail on service establishments and a complete lack of differential analysis of the options on offer. For example, the village of Parker has several motels listed as being essentially equivalent in what they provide the overnight client. But a quick tour of two of the facilities turned up consequential differences between them! For instance, the rooms of the recommended Stardust Motel turned out to be in poor repair and unpleasantly aromatic as well. Further, described as having a pool the actual resource was more like a bird bath than a basin for swimming. Meanwhile, just up the road rooms at the lovely, well kept Kofa Inn (recommended co-equally with the Stardust) could be rented for just a few dollars more per night than the unappealing Stardust. At the end of a long day of driving it is distinctions like this that I expect to find available in the guide book I am relying upon rather than having to do the legwork myself upon arrival. These shortcomings in the text were unfortunately repeated at any number of other locales I visited on my trip. Although Lonely Planet Arizona does a fairly good job of orienting the prospective traveler to what the state has to offer by way of national parks and natural beauty (Sedona as a landscape as opposed to a human settlement is incomparably beautiful), its failure to assess comprehensively and distinguish effectively between the service establishments it recommends makes it only barely adequate as a travel guide.

I fell in love last year. With Argentina. Having visited, I wanted to learn more and more. The musical Evita gave me a taste of the complexity of the fascinating story of one of Argentina's great figures. This book is a scholarly look at her life, her ups her downs, and includes many interesting photographs of Eva and Juan. I recommend it highly.

i enjoyed the book very much,i wanted to see the real person not the movie person.too bad she died so young,maybe she would have helped argentina more towards democracy.who knows? we never will. but i would have liked to have known her.

This is one biography that can tries to explain what made her tick. Close to 55 years since she died, Evita's mystery unravels slowly. Her childhood trauma is not enough to explain what drove her addictive need for power and bloodlust. If you admire powerful women, read this.

I am a biography buff. I prefer fact over fiction and read just about every autobiography and biography that I can get my hands on. Often I have found the need to read several biographies by various authors to get a clear picture and understanding of the subject's life and character. Not this time - Evita First Lady is an exquisitely written biography. It is not a bit of fluff but a riviting account of the life and times of one of history's most notorious first ladies. I highly recommend John Barnes' book.

"Truth stranger than fiction".......2003-06-05

I am very familiar with Latin American writers and read them in the Spanish. I read this book in Spanish even though it originally was in English! John Barnes is a very experienced journalist who was stationed in Bueonos Aires for various major publications. He has worked all over the world in places like Argentina, Chile. No. Ireland and covered the Iran Iraq was for Newsweek. With this background and talent he has crafted a facinating book about Eva Peron. It's true that there is a lot of politics but when you are first lady it goes with the territory. It's how she and Col. Peron transformed and revoluncionized Argentina just before the end of WW 11 that is so interesting. Evita left a little pueblo at 15 with no formal education, worked her way up to being a second rate actriz in their film industry. She fell in love with Col Peron many years her senior and took control of the country. It turnes out she was the brains and fierce driving spirit in the process who died at age 32. The major labor union petioned the Pope to have her cannonized a saint! I found this book by the pro John Barnes a real treat.

Thomas Von Essen, New York City's Thirtieth Fire Commissioner, had seen just about everything during his thirty-one-year career in the fire department: building collapses, raging infernos, heroic rescues, and power struggles. Viewed from the other side of the country, STRONG OF HEART by Commissioner Thomas Von Essen is an engaging insight into the life & times of the FDNY & the cataclysm of 9/11.

For those of us outside the furor which apparently is raging over Von Essen's memoirs, STRONG OF HEART is a worthy read of one man's memories rich with inside details of the way it was at Ground Zero from someone in the thick of it. From helicopter rides to the hundreds of wakes; from telling hundreds of bereaved families; from making errors in identification; from rubbing shoulders with rescuers, presidents, mayors & journalists, from one of the few survivors whose life work has been transformed by that dreadful day.

Complete with some profound photos.

Could have been more..............2002-11-02

I will make this review short and to the point. Commissioner Von Essen had the potential for a great book, but something was lost along the way. For one thing, there is really no mention of the '93 WTC bombing in here. Even if he may have had a small part to play in it, that is a pretty significant part of the history of the FDNY. I would have liked to have seen the Commish write a little more about Ray Downey and some of the other people he talks about in the book, but that is my personal preference. I was disappointed with the inclusion of the Commish's notes from the days following September 11th......I was not sure what to make of them, but I mostly thought the publishers needed to fill some space. This may or may not be true. If you want to read another account of the FDNY response to September 11th, then please get this book.

the running man.......2002-10-25

Tom von essen was the only member of the Fire Dept to run away from the disaster of 9/11. He is seen on national TV with his cerimonial turnout coat and helmet. three days later he is seen , with the President in a battered helmet and coat showing burn marks of a real firefighting veteran.
This book ,like that vision is filled with half truths and lies from a man who has no shame.
A man who has always capitalized on the working heros of the FDNY and tried to run a Department when he addmits that he couldn,t pass the fire Lt. test. We question what happened to all the unfavorable reviews sent to amazon.com

Great Book.......2002-09-28

I thought this book was great.I have read other books that tie into Sep. 11 and found this one to be a real tribute to so many people who were a part of that historical day.I also got to know what goes thru a mans mind who has to deal with such tragedy.There are lite moments in this book that I felt made it so very real and honest and tragic moments that made it the same.I am very glad I read it!!

A Good Book.......2002-09-24

I found this book to be both interesting and sad. A real tribute to the brave souls lost on not only 9-11 but during the Fire Commisioners term in office.I cant imagine being in his place!
