Book Description
Enron. Tyco. Arthur Andersen. These companies have turned "corporate" into a four-letter word as headline after headline reveals shocking stories of executives stealing money from investors.
But money isn't all that corporations steal. In Corporateering, Jamie Court shows how corporations routinely and quietly rob us of our personal freedoms, including privacy, security, the right to legal recourse, and more. In fact, "corporateering"-the act of prioritizing commercial gain over individual, social, or cultural gain-is everywhere in our lives.
Court offers empowering strategies for counter-corporateering so we can reclaim our private lives, our right to health and safety, and other personal liberties.
Customer Reviews:
Corporateering .......2006-08-16
I liked the information given and how it was presented. IT gives examples of things that have actually happen and this one will really make you think.
Eye opener.......2003-12-13
This book will shock you with how much information on you is floating around and more importantly, who has access to it. A must read in todays world.
A New Declaration of Independence from Corporate Abuses.......2003-08-28
It has always been the case that those with excess power are likely to overuse it, at the expense of those who have little power. In the corporate world, the hand of companies can get overbearing when there's a lot at stake. Unions have always experienced tough tactics. Legislatures are wooed with money, contributions, influence and political pressure. Whistle blowers often find themselves harassed, threatened, and intimidated. All of these excesses are documented with recent examples in this thoughtful book.
If you love your relationship with your HMO, the way your credit card company charges you, what your credit report has to say, and how your privacy is protected, then you have no need for this book. If, on the other hand, you are concerned about scandals like Enron, WorldCom, and have problems with corporate marketing to children at school, your HMO, credit card companies or credit reports, you need to read this book.
Mr. Court makes a persuasive case for corporations having gained too much power, and that the time has come to redress that balance in favor of individual citizens. He also provides lots of advice about what you can do to make matters better . . . both for yourself and others. The book's main flaw is that the section on how to fix matters is the briefest.
I hope that during the elections in 2004 that these issues will receive the attention they deserve.
After you finish this excellent book, find something to do to exercise your rights from the lists that begin in Part Three.
Excellent Book.......2003-07-27
I heard Mr. Court speak at a breakfast in San Francisco last week and purchased a copy of the book. Excellent expose of how corporations are curtailing our freedom and ending any idea of privacy. A lot of interesting things to think about.

Book Description
Just as Europe consists of countries with different languages, cultures, histories, wealth levels and systems of jurispridence, and exhibits a mosaic of different tastes and preferences, so do accounting's roles and functions differ widely across European countries. Differences in management accounting practices and control approaches abound. the question is no longer whether there is variety but its extent and explanation. In considering European variety in management accounting, it may be asked what trends if any are discernible in management accounting practices generally? What historical factors have conditioned management accounting wherever and in whatever form it exists? Are there links between management accounting research and practice? Are there competing theories within the field which are nation-specific? To what extent is the implementation of emergent cost-management approaches evident within companies? Such issues are explored in this book which also provides some basis for exploring national specifities in management accounting whilst offering room to ponder over its commonalities. Distinguished European commentators provide comprehensive analysis of past and existing management accounting practices and conceptual thinking. The contributors give a sense of whether modern management accounting approaches are evident in enterprises withing their nation and discuss findings of empirical investigations in constructing `country perspectives'. Each chapter successfully presents an informed overview of country features indicative of a rich and diverse European tapestry of management accounting thought and practice. Ultimately the book provides a useful starting point not only for making cross-national comparative observations but also for identifying opportunities and trends in management accounting systems changes.

Description:
In recent years there have been many calls for a re-orientation of accounting education in order to include the development of competencies such as communication, group working, and problem solving skills. However, concern has been expressed that the proposed changes are possibly biased towards the interests of public accounting employers. This paper presents and compares the opinions of the employers of management accountants in Spain and the UK, and then by using a weighted importance indicator determines vocational skills development priorities. The factors that the Spanish and UK employers identified as major constraints to the development of vocational skills are also compared.

Book Description
Pierre Boulez is arguably classical music's most important living composer and conductor. In this book of dialogues with author Rocco Di Pietro, Mr. Boulez reveals delightful ideas and insights on composition and imagination, listening and teaching, and muses on the nature of youth, communication, and fame.
Customer Reviews:
modest recent Boulez.......2001-05-27
Although quite slim, this set of interviews is modest in proportions, yet it's always fascinating to read Maitre Boulez and his thoughts on composition. His "Jalons"a series of lectures he gave at the College de France from 1980 to 1990 available only in French, still reamins the definitive place for Boulez's thoughts on creativity. But here he talks of his recent works, 'Sur Incises', 'Anthemes' in some detail,as well as his conducting experiences in Chicago, doing Mahler. Also references to early thoughts, indeterminacy, aleatoric gesturing, and John Cage. And Di Pietro is quite versed in fashionable intellectual trajectories as the pessimism of Jean Baudrillard who Boulez comments on. The only disappointment here is there wasn't more. I read this in one sitting, one single train ride, you may as well.

Book Description
From two leading instructors in business and Buddhism comes a fresh approach to making peace with your finances and creating true abundance.
It may seem contradictory that Buddhist teachers Kulananda and Dominic Houlder have also been highly successful in the business arena, but they have learned that Buddhist teachings do not require a life of poverty, and can indeed go hand-in-hand with wealth and prosperity. Mindfulness and Money brings to light the teachings of Buddha as they apply to the money part of life, and shares the stories of others who have found the Buddhist path to freedom, creativity, and abundance.
Using the Buddhist Wheel of Life as a starting point, the authors explore the mechanism by which desire for money and material things is confining, and how mastery of desire can free us to live peacefully with our finances. Kulananda and Houlder offer five precepts for living on the Path of Abundance, including kindness, generosity, contentment, honesty, and awareness. Through prescriptive meditations, reflections, and exercises, we can begin to earn and spend more purposefully–the key to finding financial peace, whatever one’s income. An enlightening combination of practical wisdom and spirituality, Mindfulness and Money is a valuable asset for all seekers.
Customer Reviews:
Nice average book.......2006-07-20
This book discussed how we seek to be complete ourselves through purchases, and how to overcome compulsive spending. It also talks about using the 5 basic Buddhist moral precepts to succeed in business, cultivate loving-kindness, develop generosity, cultivate contentment, be honest, and be more aware. This book was a nice read for a beginner like me but I think they dealt to much with the delusion of the ego that we Buddhists must over come. If you are a beginner this book will help you bring the basics of Buddhism into your personal finances and career. If you have travelled farther out of delusion than the begginer you will have little need for this book, your practice will already have you following these precepts.
Wonderful Perspective.......2004-06-18
This book captivated my attention starting from page one when it commended money being the greatest invention ever! I find it intriguing as a Buddhist nature book would perhaps, tell us that we need to stay away from money as it would imbue in us a sense of craving which is covered in this book anyway. So, the book dragged me further into its content. Before I knew it, I'm finished with it! It's such a friendly book & I find it very useful in terms of using real life examples (case studies if you may) to illustrate their points. This book also made it clear that by upholding the five percepts of Buddhism, we don't need to live like a pauper. Despite that Buddhists endeavours to uphold those values, all of them are still living very different lives. Some would live a contented but simple lives, but some still live in considerable comforts. It all depends upon the choice that we are making. The further information appendix at the end is very helpful to allow us enthusiasts to be in touch with Buddhist Centres around the world. The homepages do help a lot. A book that inspires, a book that answers some of my doubts & misunderstandings, a book that reminds me what I should be doing with my life to lead an abundant life, not in the sense of having the richest & wealthiest life but a life that cherishes the so called "good" life. Highly recommended.
Life and Work can be aligned.......2004-05-24
This book was a wonderful surprise and came to me at a time when I needed it most. It helped to validate decisions around my work and life which had been on my mind for some time. It also helped me tremendously in other parts of my life, because even though I was not a practicing Buddhist at the time, I realized how many of my own pilosophies on life and business were aligned with the teachings of the faith, and with the precepts introduced and explored by the authors.
Very useful and a highly-enjoyable read for anyone in search of more from their life's work and self-expression in the workplace.
Kulananda and Houlder have a winner here!.......2003-02-09
This book is surprisingly easy reading, and lots of fun to read.
It flows like a river gently to it's final conclusion: "The Path of Abundance-can be easily achieved without money or joining in the rat-race of to=days commercial world."
Kulananda and Houlder are both people who have been highly succesful in their fields, both as entrepeneurs, and teachers and students of Buddhism
They observe that in the West,no matter how much we have,it is never enough.
That the pursuit of wealth for it's own sake, causes much tension and anxiety.
Instead they offer us "The path of Abundance",to counter to-days stress and anxiety.
The path is based on five Buddhist precepts.
Kindness,Generosity,Contentment,Honesty,and Awareness.
These teach us to earn and spend creatively, and to live peacefully with or without money.
The easy to follow path, described with the aid of actual and concrete examples from people interviewed in all walks of life, show how, with the aid of Meditation, and simplicity,we can all lead a hapy stress free life, leaving behind:
"Things,possessions,harmful anxieties,and un-necessities".
The Authors show us how we can set ourselves free to live with our life's true purpose.
Like Kulanandas previously 5 starred book,"Principles of Buddhism",it is a wondrfully accessible book, and highly recommended.

Their feet are on the ground.......2004-03-01
There are several reasons why this book is worth reading. First, when the authors speak about bread, you can see the dough on their hands--they have breadth, so to speak, of experience. They speak with authority.
Second, they explain some complex Buddhist doctrines in such a way that teenager would be able to understand them, while at the same time, a PhD would be able to appreciate them.
Third, they vivify their ideas with an abundance of living examples. Any seasoned public speaker will testify to the effectiveness of examples: people remember the examples long after the principles have been forgotten. These examples help us to see what is going on in our own lives. They show us our lives through the lives of others.
Last, they write in a style which is pleasurable to read, literate without being in any way stuffy. It's the style of grounded intelligence.
I am confident that other readers will find additional reasons for appreciating this book.

Book Description
In this book the reader will find a great deal of astonishing and surprising facts that only a few of the Iraqis know about the real origin of Sedam Hussein (Sedam was his original name before changing it to Saddam) since before he was born and how he was raised, living in a rotten environment with a dissipated mother who never gave the affectionateness of her motherhood. Thus, he lived a miserable childhood, he did not know the words mercy, responsibility, or love. He always felt bitterness towards human kind, after he became like a monster seeking revenge from every thing and everyone.
Sedam Husseinn was a dictator who fought technology and progress and spread darkness among the people. He is one of the most dictatorial leaders who committed crimes against mankind in addition to many violations to international law. He was engaged in battles and arguments and even wars with all of Iraq's neighboring countries. He lit four major wars in a period of 23 years that shed the blood of millions of Iraqis, Iranians, Kuwaitis, Arabs, and non Arabs from all over the world.
Sedam tricked himself as he tricked the helpless poor people, who believed in him, he gave them hope for dreams that never comes true. He did not realize the gracelessness of his wars against the neighbors; he did not get the lesson and kept falling into mistakes that led him to more wars. The reason behind all this is his thinking that he is the sole leader in the entire world.

Book Description
“I think Ralph fell in love with the uphillness in me. I could keep up with him on windy passes and minor climbing peaks. But I never stayed with him on the downhill. He was always too fast. He’d wait patiently for me at the bottom of a black diamond run, at the end of a long, winding mountain road, or at the foot of a crag. He was happy when I could get to the bottom of anything. I wasn’t with him the day he had the accident that left him a C-4 quadriplegic. Perhaps it’s the uphillness in me that is keeping me with him now. It’s all uphill from here. No more downhills to carve through gracefully or sail down safely; only up, up, up.” —from the Introduction
Suzy Parker and her husband, Ralph Hager, spent every free moment together biking, skiing, and hiking. All that changed in a split second when a freak cycling accident left Ralph permanently paralyzed below the shoulders. In that moment, Suzy’s old life fell away and her new one began. In
Tumbling After, Suzy chronicles her transformation from carefree outdoorswoman to full-time caregiver, and paints a loving portrait of the impromptu, oddball family of concerned neighbors and friends who become her new lifeline. With Jerry, the tender ex-con; Momma Scott, a guardian angel and force of nature in a feather boa; and Harka, the culture-shocked Nepalese, at their side, Suzy and Ralph weather the loss of old friends and learn to embrace a new way of life with hope and a healing dose of the absurd.
This astonishing memoir, devoid of self-pity and told with breathtaking candor and a wry sense of humor, is an inspiring journey that is ultimately a story of survival and second chances—and the unexpected joy and love that can grow out of grief if given the slightest encouragement.

I disagree with many of the reviews. I found the tone of the book to be somewhat self-pitying and monotonous. Strangely, the only review here I seem to agree with was written below by the wife of another quadiplegic.
The most interesting aspect about this topic, the devastating accident and its immediate aftermath, are glossed over quickly in the first few pages. The remainder of the book is the author going, "Woe is me, look how my life has deteriorated." Don't get me wrong, I don't think I could have handled what she went through, but the book makes the wife more of a victim than the husband.
There is nothing in the book about the husband's initial reaction to waking up and learning he was paralyzed after such an active life; virtually nothing about how he coped with the injury psychologically.
One problem with this book is that the author tells the whole story from the standpoint of me, me, me. I understand how hard her life must have become in the wake of her husband's devastating accident, but I had a real problem with the fact that, according to the book, for the most part, the author parked her formerly active husband in the living room in front of the television like a potted plant and pretty much left him there.
There is very little interaction described between the author and her disabled husband. The author goes on and on about how wonderful her husband's caretakers are, but treats the quadriplegic husband as a two dimensional burden. For example, Ms. Parker will describe in great detail some conversation or interaction she had with one of her husband's attendants, and then she throws in something like, "and we gave Ralph a sleeping pill, emptied his urine bag, put him to bed, and then [the attendant] took me upstairs and made love to me tenderly." I am no prude, and I understand the woman has needs, but I found the whole thing horrifying and insensitive.
She parks the husband in a hospital bed in the living room, and then spends the next few years sharing a bed and sex life upstairs with his 60-year old care attendant. When the husband says he does not want to know how she satisfies herself sexually, she tells him anyway, saying telling him would make HER feel better. Who knows how the poor husband felt. He could hardly complain, since he is helpless without both the wife and the attendant.
She says her old friends and life "dropped away," after the accident, leaving as her only social life, an odd assortment of lovable misfits that took care of her husband. The book gives the impression that, if one is rendered disabled, their only social life is going to be with their ex-con, ex-drug addict hired attendant [who also services the author sexually for years] and assorted neighbors.
I did not find the book uplifing. I found it completely depressing. Usually when I love a book, I am sad when I finish it. This one I was glad to put down. If you want an inspiring book by or about dealing with quadriplegia and its aftermath, I highly recommend "Eleven Seconds" by Travis Roy [the former hockey player]; "Still Me," by Christopher Reeve; or "Miracles Happen" by Brooke and Jean Ellison.
Susan, keep up the good work please........2003-05-25
I am sorry it took me so long to discover this book. I have been a fan of Ms. Parker since I first began reading her columns in the SF Chronicle. This book is one of those you want to read slowly so that it lasts longer but find you can't put it down. Susan has a wonderful knack for untainted honesty as she reports on the universal joys and sorrows of human life. She guides the reader into her world without trying to assign blame or seek justification, a truly refreshing approach in this day and age. Can't wait for the sequel! -Cindy
Another Quad Wife Speaks.......2002-11-19
As the wife of a quadriplegic I was very interested to see what Susan Parker had to say about her life. The description of the devastation, hopelessness and helplessness women feel when they come into this situation was excellent. The potrayal of the feeling of being totally overwhelmed and burned out by the intensity of it all was very real to me.
This is where the excellence of the book ended. It was extremely redundant, telling almost the same story over and over with a slightly different twist. I was quickly bored. It was obvious that it was a collection of short antecdotes written for her newspaper column and not a cohesive book. I was determined to finish it and was only able to tough it out to the end because of the perseverence I've learned from being a Quad Wife.
It was appalling to read that her husband is kept a virtual prisoner in the living room of the house they live in. No adaptations have been made since 1994 to make the rest of the home accessible to him? He has a life of watching TV? What is that all about?
I am also wondering why a woman who says she is intelligent did not seek out the available programs which provide excellent, in home assistance to people with disabilities. Had she taken advantage of such programs, both she and her husband would have much improved lives.
Worldview Changing and Hilarious.......2002-08-21
I picked this book up with about 15 others from the new non-fiction section at my library in preparation vacation reading. I got through my entire selection, but this is the one book that, in a truly meaningful way, became part of my consciousness. I then had the opportunity to choose a book for my bookclub, and it was a no-brainer: Tumbling After. I think the book just speaks to a place in one's heart.
Although at times I wanted to shake Suzy Parker, there was never a time in the book where I couldn't relate in some way to her. Since none of us know what lies ahead in life, we can all imagine ourselves in Suzy Parker's shoes, and I would hope that I would handle any situation of the same magnitude with similar grace, honesty, and humanity. When white, middle class Suzy finds herself in the position of forming a "new family" with folks whose background and lifestyle were formerly not even on her radar, it proves beyond doubt that "love is thicker than blood". She faces up to her biases very bravely, and finds true friendship and camraderie.
Lastly, but just as importantly, I laughed hysterically throughout, which was hard to explain to family members who inquired of the subject matter of such an apparently funny book (quadraplegia? - huh?). But I just loved Suzy Parker's soul.
The Real Deal.......2002-05-31
I saw Suzy Parker at a book reading in Seattle and she said, "One thing you learn being in the disabled community is that there is always someone worse off than you." And she shows us some of these people--with a clear eye and a sense of humor. What I really love about her story is its truth. There is no self-pity. Even when she says "this [stinks], I wonder if I can make," she just plows ahead.
The story is accessible and never maudlin even when it is grim. And there is plenty of humor and adventure to pull the reader through the tight little chapters.
This story is the real deal--a great read, a compelling story, and a few lessons along the way.

Extremely detailed book--Find a grant for any Non-Profit.......2001-08-25
If you can't find at least one grant that you meet the requirements for in this book, you didn't look at the book at all! The subject index is indespensible in narrowing down the grants. I was looking for grants for our local Humane Society, so I looked up "Animal". I found listings for twenty-eight grants geared toward Animal Care and Animal Rights. I looked up each grant by it's Accession number, read the details of the grant and narrowed it down to eight that I could submit to, add that to the seven general "Non-Profits" and I've got detailed information on fifteen grants, all in the matter of one evening of looking through this very detailed book. Listings for each grant include all contact information, web site addresses if available, email addresses and requirements/restrictions. You've heard of "How-To's", well this book is a "Where-To"!
