No longer useful.......2007-09-23
This book may once have been useful, but we found it outdated to the point of uselessness. Some of the trails described no longer meaningfully existed as such, and one was a dirt road with a heavy 4wd traffic. After having been mislead one too many times, we abandoned this book completely and relied only on the trail descriptions in The Ultimate Kauai Guidebook: Kauai Revealed (Ultimate Kauai Guidebook). That said, we looked to this book only for hikes, not beach walks and the like. It may be that it is a very competent guide for strolls. This book doesn't describe that many more hikes than the Ultimate Guidebook does, but the way some trails are broken into several hikes makes it seem at first glance that it does.
Kaua'i Trails.......2007-08-24
This was one of two books we used while hiking Kauai. The description of floral and birds one might see on certain trails was extremely good. Since we are birders this was very beneficial. Excellent text and very detailed.
Excellent trail book.......2007-01-10
I can't imagine the trip we took without this guide. It took us along trails that were stunning and amazingly little traveled. I felt like we saw the REAL Kauai. Surely it wasn't the hotels at the shore. Our only complaint is that some of the trails narrowed without warning at high altitudes and in places that seemed less than safe - especially along the Napoli coast. But all in all it made our trip the excellent journey that it was.
Inspiring - use supplemental trail maps for footpaths.......2007-01-06
Just returned from 6 days on Kauai, where we enjoyed a number of the shorter hikes using the 2002 edition. The author's fondness for Kauai really comes through in each hike's description. The ratings of length, elevation gain, and particularly of what kind of footwear is needed for each hike were invaluable -- we didn't have hiking boots and focused on the "tennis shoe" options. As the author recommends, DO get supplemental trail maps even for what you might *anticipate* will be a straightforward short hike - we relied on Kauai Trails in attempting to find the Berry Flat & Discovery Center trails in Kokee Park since it looked so simple, and ended up spending a panicked hour on trails through thick growth of strawberry guava trees as the sun was setting because trail names/signs had changed. (If you do attempt Trip 40 or 41, check with the Kokee Museum for a map. Trips like 9- Kuilau Ridge on old roads are indeed straightforward and also rewarding.) Another possible frustration is with the driving directions, which don't use the ubiquitous mileage signs: On Kauai many spots of tourist/hiker interest are not clearly marked and with the one-lane roads you may not have an immediate opportunity to turn around to access the pull-over, so do read driving instructions carefully before you set out and pull over whenever you think you might have found the spot. As previously noted, instructions to refer to a previous hike listing can be frustrating and it would be helpful if the exact break point into Hike A and Hike B were marked in the text and on the maps. I was also concerned by the reference to picking up (a few) shells on Anini Beach given that if everyone took shells off beaches there would be none left for others to see or for mollusks' homes.
Very Helpful.......2006-11-11
11-06 Just returned from Kauai traveling with an impaired walker.
The book was fabulous for planning side trips. Level of difficulty,
distance and even type of shoe required are all here. Good maps & info.
I can't wait to return with a fellow hiker to take advantage of all the
great trips and tips in this book.

Book Description
As one of the most complex, charismatic and controversial figures of our times, Robert Kennedy occupies a remarkable and paradoxical place in the American imagination. On the right he has been idolized by Rudy Giuliani and memorialized by Attorney General John Ashcroft, who renamed the Justice Department after him. On the left, his admirers say he represented the last hope of revitalizing the liberal tradition. But who was Robert Kennedy? To acclaimed reporter Jack Newfield, who worked closely with him during his last years, RFK was a human being far different from the myths that surrounded his name. “Part of him was soldier, priest, radical, and football coach. But he was none of these. He was a politician. His enemies said he was consumed with selfish ambition, a ruthless opportunist exploiting his brother’s legend. But he was too passionate and too vulnerable ever to be the cool and confident operator his brother was.” In this haunting and memorable portrait we see what kind of man died when Robert Kennedy was shot. And what kind of leader America lost.

great insight.......2007-06-27
I wanted to read this book because of something George Stephanopoulos said in his book All Too Human. Jack Newfield certainly didn't disappoint. Despite the years that have passed since RFK was killed, the themes of human frailty, disillusionment and redemption still resonate.
It seemed too, a much more real look into RFK than many other biographies and memoirs.
An Unusually Badly Written Book on an Important Figure.......2007-05-26
I believe Jack Newfield is an important journalist-- he refers to his importance regularly throughout the book RFK, a rambling, random, arrogant collection of casual glimpses and off-hand observations on RFK, that constantly refer to him being Irish, and suggest that we can understand him better because of that.
There is no organization to this book-- it is not a close history, not a biography, hence, I guess, the title "RFK: A Memoir". It is a Memoir of a man who thought little of RFK-- by that I mean he didn't think RFK was all that great, but then he didn't think all that much about him. Did I mention Bobby was Irish. Because Newfield does. Frequently.
Truly a horrible book. The key terms and thinkers referred to throughout: existentialism, Puritanism, Irish, and Norman Mailer.
Honestly, the only high point is the section "Lydon Johnson: the Antichrist of the New Politics." Here Newfield quotes himself extensively, but at least he seems to have once cared about Johnson.
The best book I've read in a long while, period.......2005-03-29
This book not only paints a beautiful and compelling portrait of Bobby Kennedy, it presents a very real and tangible snapshot of our country and the process of the political machine in the late 60s. Jack Newfield is (or sadly, was) a great writer who can keep the reader transfixed, most probably because this is his story as well. What Jack Newfield reveals to us about Bobby Kennedy is what he reveals to us about himself.
"by the awful grace of god".......2004-10-08
I grew up with mixed feeling about RFK. Being raised by Goldwater Republicans, the Kennedy mythos held little sway. But I was 6 years old when RFK was assasinated and I saw him dying lying spread eagle on the floor, his head haloed in a corona of blood, his face impassive.
I still have no sympathy for the Kennedy mythos and I have no sympathy for messianic politics (looking for the leader, whether left or right), but I've been drawn to RFK. He alone was really devout. He alone really saw the moral dimension during the Cuban Missile Crisis. He alone accept his share of responsibility for Vietnam.
This book was written soon after RFK's death and it's a wonderful memior. Newfield is not a "kennedy groupie" altho' he is so, so close to his subject you forgive him for his hero worship. It is not to be treated as an objective historical document, Newfield is blind to the achievements of the Great Society and vicious towards LBJ, but given the context in which he wrote that's hardly surprising.
For a more critical, yet remarkably complementary (when it comes to RFK) account, I would recommend Garry Wills THE KENNEDY IMPRISIONMENT.
A fine book with a personal touch.......2004-05-09
Robert kennedy gave this country his life, his vision and sence of hope and peace to all. Newfield's writing does a fine job of showing RFK struggle to do just that.

Did Bugsy Siegel Really Invent Las Vegas?

Release Date: 2007-06-25 |
Book Description
During Mickey Cohen's mob tenure, all of his well-known contacts may have helped his business and publicity, but in later years, those same associations led many to place him at the core of the worst-case conspiracy theories, a voyeuristic peek between the sheets of celebrities and politicians. Insinuations and direct accusations exist regarding Mickey's specific connections to both Kennedy assassinations, the suspicious death of Marilyn Monroe, and the extensive efforts to cover up the horrific events. Like Woody Allen's Zelig, Mickey pops up in a series of unlikely historic episodes, alternatively disguised as a Machiavellian politician, two-faced lover, or confidant. Beyond accusers' sometimes-amusing agenda-motivated claims, including anti-Semitic overtones, are theories based on his unusual liaisons, connecting him to nefarious national and international activities.

Donald Spoto, best known for his Hitchcock bio The Dark Side of Genius, gets past Jackie's dazzling mythic exterior, revealing beneath her white gloves the ominous nicotine stains that led to her early death, gently removing those sunglasses to peek into her soul. Though he, too, must rely on the kindness of anonymous sources, Spoto is relatively skeptical about the dishiest dirt. And because he's an ex-monk and theology professor, he can deal with her religious, intellectual side. She was a superb editor for a third of her life, and Spoto gives her sharp wit its due.
Thus, for Jackie's alleged defloration in a Paris elevator, consult All Too Human, and for her alleged beddings of Brando, Sinatra, Beatty, and Bobby Kennedy, read Jackie After Jack. Spoto paints a more restrained Jackie. Sure, she frolicked in moonlit Mayan pools in 1968 with a married ex-JFK cabinet member, but Spoto says she never slept with Bobby, that JFK's Marilyn Monroe fling was a one-night stand, and that Jackie demanded that he take pity on the suicidal actress. Jack and Jackie were kindred: "Each endured a lonely and difficult childhood with emotionally distant mothers and philandering fathers ... each had cultivated a certain solitude." Jack was cold, amoral, uncultured; Jackie nudged him on civil rights, regaled Niebuhr and Nehru, brought art and mind to the White House: "Underneath a veil of lovely inconsequence, she concealed ... an all-seeing eye and a ruthless judgment." Spoto makes their last months--when, ironically, they found real love for one another--as poignant as the moment she found his skull in her hand.
From the self-doubting kid whose vile mother talked her out of accepting Vogue's Prix de Paris to the self-possessed editor of Dancing on My Grave and A Cartoon History of the Universe, Spoto's Jackie is a plausible character one wishes one could have known. --Tim Appelo

Customer Reviews:
Great Summer Read.......2007-06-30
The life of Jacqueline Bouvier Kennedy Onassis can be accurately told as one of wealth, power, struggle, and heartache. Born into a life of status, Jackie, in essence, never had the trouble of wandering far from it; she was well-educated, and intelligent; and for the most part knew both her role and place in society. Spoto paints the story of a strong woman, who despite her travails is able to keep on. True, this account does lean toward a more sympathetic view of Jackie; her faults are not as obvious. However unbalanced, this biography is still one of note for its fairly accurate portrayals and the insights of her life through her eyes. Her marriage to an American President and later the richest man in the world during her time, will forever establish and endear her as an American icon. Her story, indeed, is very remarkable.
Reading this book made me realize that there was something beyond her image. Jackie was an intensely private person; so by catching a glimpse of her life and the way she might have thought, clarified somewhat her public persona. As for her legion of adoring fans, history is made up of more than one person. No matter, this books makes a highly interesting summer read.
The mysterious Mrs. Kennedy.......2006-04-08
She was a key public personality of the 1960's until she died in 1994. Worldly, cosmopolitan, intelligent, stylish, polished, and a woman with her own dark shadows ... Jackie Kennedy lead a life that was a living dream. From the White House to Park Avenue, Jackie left a trail of mystery and fascination. Her human side hidden from the public and a mind we came to know in her later years. It was sad to see her go at just 64 but she lived a grand life.
Pleased but not.......2005-02-06
I had to read a biography for school, and I was very interested in Jackie Kennedy Onassis. The main reason I selected this book was that it gave a biography over her entire life, rather than other books that only gave a small portion in her life. But on the other hand it was extremely long, and had a lot of extra info. that wasn't needed.
Sugary Sweet.......2004-01-10
It always makes me smile when I see reviews that praise Jackie as the ultimate mother. Look, as accounts from people who knew her will tell you she was an average mother; her kids went to boarding schools, and she had a great deal of help in the way of nannies and maids to assist her in being a "perfect" mother. jackie was an ordinary person; prone to selfisness, and keep in mind that she had a great oppurtunity to become a humanitarian (like A. Hepburn, and Diana). Did she though? No. I am fascinated by Jackie because of the private life she led and her extraordinary style and beauty. This book painted a laughably perfect image of her-she had no faults, and of course as we all know everyone has faults. For a more objective look at her life I would suggest "A woman named Jackie"
Great book!.......2002-01-05
I had always wanted to find out more about the famous 'Mrs. Kennedy'. I picked this one and found it hard to put it down. From her chilhood to the time she died, Spoto writes in a delightful fashion that is easy to read and understand. After reading this touching and heartwarming portrayal of America's Royal, she became one of my favorite people. It includes quotes from her close friends and indulges you in her charity projects and her relationship with Caroline and John Jr. It tells of her deep love for JFK and the loyalty she had to her family. The only thing I disliked about the book was the beginning, which was like reading the beginning of the Bible. It told all about her ancestors history and was quite boring in my opinion. Aside from that though, this is a great book which helped spawn my interest in Jackie.

Deftly written 19th Century Family History.......2004-03-17
Author Bess Waldman transcends the category of family reminiscence, by virtue of a restrained writing style and good organization. Among the unusual perspectives highlighted by this particular family's difficulties and triumphs in Romanov Russia:
-significant ties between Sephardic Jewish communities in Turkey and Georgia, with the Baltic/Polish/Ukranian Pale of Settlement territories
-the real impetus to emigration sparked by the Imperial Army's punitive draft policies
-the founding and flowering of a noteworthy Orthodox Jewish culture in Jersey City, NJ (now largely forgotten).
The editorial decision to place the photographs quite near the end of the book was an inspired one - - imbuing these images with much more meaning for a reader who has had the opportunity to get to know the family by this point.
Waldman lived to a great age (over 95) and the brief editorial notes on her other, early 20th Century writings leave this reviewer wanting to see more of her work.
