Advanced topics in options covered in a friendly manner........1997-03-24

Tompkins covers some relatively advanced topics in options, such as volatility forecasting and interest rate options, in an understandable manner. He uses only enough mathematics to make the important points. I think this book would be useful to a trader. Unfortunately, Tompkins has a verbose writing style and has not mastered punctuation.

Interesting reading.......2007-09-18

This book was pretty good. The first part validated what I pretty much figured out for myself the hard way. At least with the knowledge you get from this book that this type of behavior and attitude is universal among women everywhere and is "normal," you can deal with it more constructively or let it go more easily instead of dwelling on it. I did enjoy reading the first part of the book - probably 3/4 of the book was helpful because it validates what you know or can sense about what is going on around you, and that is empowering and reassuring. The guidance given in this book for dealing with other women is somewhat like remembering difficult algorithms though. And, unless you can convince every other woman you ever deal with to read the book and follow precisely the "rules" you have to follow in order to have perfect harmony among the women in your life, you still have to just use your gut instinct on how to deal with each particular woman or...well, you already know what will happen or you wouldn't be interested in reading this type of book! To be honest, I started reading the last part of the book (which directly relates to being in a supervisory position) and just couldn't read any more.

This is a thought-provoking book, and I recommend it for any woman, whether you work in an office or not. It says much about the conflicts that arise between us, the reasons behind them, and some solutions on how to handle them.

One of my favorite chapters was "Handling Conflicts With Style." I recently covered conflict styles in a college freshman seminar course, and I appreciated how they were expanded in this chapter. There are some interesting paragraphs on ow to handle sabotage and deliberate distractions, two things I have experienced firsthand and was poor at resonding to.

There are many wonderful suggestions in the chapter "How To Be An Effective Female Leader." Several aspects of leadership are discussed, and skills are suggested in detail, to balance the troubles many female leaders experience.

There are some parts of the book, however, that I do no agree with.

Although the Power Dead-Even Rule is absolutely true in every respect, it does little to solve the problem that I have with power-hungry, conrolling women in my work environment. Honestly, why should I care what gets a co-worker to turn against me? Of course, having some knowledge of the root of the problem is extremely beneficial at maintaining some sort of balance. At the end of the day, however, I am able to put my head on the pillow and fall asleep based simply on the advice I received from a dear friend:

It's not my business what other people think of me.

This may sound like foolish advice at first, but you know what? It's TRUE.

And the advice to use gossip as a tool is WAY off the mark. I have been able to maintain my position at my job for many years based on a principle that I believe deeply in - that gossip does NOTHING to improve anyone's character. You want to build trust among your coworkers? Don't gossip!! Find something else in common to discuss.

I'm a little irritated at the excuses given for indirect aggression - you know what? A person's personal issues should be worked out before or after work, there's no excuse for a bitch.

Downplaying your achievements is good to keep in mind. But ultimately, you really should be yourself, not a puppet. My point is, when you apply what you gain from this book, don't forget what you have learned before.

This Book has Changed my Life........2006-05-08

I have to say, I felt pretty disgusted with myself, having to pretend to be insecure and self-depreciating, just to get other women to like me. But by God it works.

I tested the techniques out on my very next female customer. I refused to accept her compliments, kept downplaying myself and my accomplishments, while praising her instead and pointing out all the ways in which I felt she was better.

Result: She LOVED me. We actually linked arms and skipped! No kidding! She convinced her husband to give me $500 on a job that wasn't worth half that much money.

Not only is this book helpful in avoiding petty jealousy, the evil eye, and female sabotage, applied to business situations it can be a real cash cow!!! $$$

Take those psychology books that advise you to "Project Self Confidence!" and "Toot Your Own Horn!" and throw them in the garbage. If you are not a man, that will not work for you.

This one tip alone will save your friendships: Don't you dare ever tell a woman good news. If you have good news tell a man. If you have bad news tell a woman.

If you're just bustin' to tell all the girls how your new boyfriend is rich, famous and hunky, DON'T, unless you a have your own personal security detail and somebody willing to start your car for you.

If they find out anyway, make your good fortune sound negative. Tell them he beats you and he slept with your sister. : P

I can sum the whole book up for you: Women can't stand to see another woman happy, especially if they're not. Better learn how to operate within the "Power Dead Even" Rule.

Women Working Wisely.......2006-02-06

This book has been an invaluable reference and resource for me. Pat Heim's experience in addressing relationally aggressive behaviors between women in the workplace shows through in every page she writes. With "In the Company of Women" she adds one more feather to her impressive cap and advances each reader's understanding of this important issue.

A Top Notch Blueprint.......2001-07-30

Doug Eadie's book contains important "how to" information for all those school boards out there who are trying to bring stability to their district. The plan is clear and the argument is convincing. My suggestion is that every school superintendent and every board member read the book with an open mind. Then, go for it if your board needs improvement. Mr. Eadie's insightful treatment of human interactions is without equal in this realm. My only criticism is that the publisher needs to employ a talented editor to go through the text of the book for the next edition.

A Practical Guide to High-Impact Performance.......2001-04-10

This is a book which should be read by anyone who is a member of the governing board of an organization. Eadie examines what he calls "seven keys to high-impact governance." He organizes his excellent material within six chapters, several of which conclude with "A Closing Word", "In Conclusion" or "In Closing" commentary which summarizes key points. Here are the six chapter titles:

Getting a Handle on the Work of Governing

Developing the Board as a Human Resource

Building and Maintaining the Board-CEO Relationship

Developing Your Board's Structure and Performance Management Capacity

Involving Your Board in Leading Innovation

Eadie then provides a "Suggested Bibliography" for those in need of additional information sources. The book is primarily intended for those who are members of what Eadie calls a "strategic leadership team" such as a governing board member, CEO, or senior manager.

As promised in the Preface, he provides practical, down-to-earth guidance that will help them build governing boards of directors and trustees that are extraordinary at doing their basic job: governing. Eadie acknowledges that his book is based on several "critical assumptions": boards are organizations that can produce significant impact if they are systematically designed and developed; boards are above all else people; building extraordinary, high-impact boards is a team activity; and finally, the CEO should be the prime mover in developing a high-impact board. What Eadie provides is a comprehensive and cohesive guide. With regard to the aforementioned seven "keys" to extraordinary board leadership, they are: understanding in depth what governing is all about and generally how to develop a board's governing capacity; getting the right people to serve on the board and developing their governing skills; building and maintaining a strong board-CEO relationship; assembling a well-structured board which manages its own performance; having the board play a leading role in the organization's process for regularly generating significant innovation in an ever-changing, always-challenging environment; having the board play a strong, creative role in operational planning and budget preparation as well as operational oversight; and finally, having the board also play a creative role in external relations and financial resource development (i.e. fundraising). A Moving Tribute........2003-09-23

This extremely moving book will appeal to those readers with an interest in the Arab-Israeli conflict, particularly those who have studied the relevant military conflicts in the Middle East.

The book describes one of the many land battles which occurred on the Golan Heights during the 1973 Yom Kippur War.

The book concentrates on one such battle at Tel Saki, where the reader is presented with a very personal narrative of how heavily outnumbered Israeli forces were taken completely by surprise by the Syrian forces which suddenly advanced catching the small number of Israeli troops utterly unprepared for the ensuing conflict.

The presentation of this book is not what one would usually expect. It is presented through a series of photographic essays and a number of personal interviews from the soldiers involved which are seamlessly woven together. What comes across to the reader is how military conflict of this nature affects the individual soldier, revealing what the book calls "all the human intricacies" and tragic consequences of conflict.

The story enfolds in the context of the handful of Israeli soldiers (five) defending this isolated position whilst enfolded by the advance of a large Syrian force consisting of 150 tanks & infantry. The book presenting a sense of the soldiers' own combat experiences on the ground, including their fears, hopes and anguish. (The reinforcements sent to assist these soldiers in a rescue mission were nearly all killed.)

The cruel, personal aspect of warfare is demonstrated throughout this book. One such example described is that of Yair on page 109, when he is badly wounded in an exchange of fire. Shot through the neck, he describes his feelings of terror as his blood spilled over his gun which jammed in the face of the advancing Syrians. Trying desperately to bandage himself & throw grenades at the closing enemy, he describes being further hit in "every place on his body where he was not wearing a vest or helmet". Convinced that all the Israelis were dead, he further describes how the Syrians casually wandered among the lifeless Israelis lying on the battlefield. The book describes how one Syrian soldier walked over to Yair's body, took Yair's head in his hands and proceeded to move it around and around in a search for any sign of life. Finding none he finally poked the lifeless body with his rifle before moving on.

The latter section of the book also contains interviews & photographs of the family members of the soldiers involved in this battle and of those who fell.

This is indeed a necessary reminder of the horrors of war and how such conflicts affect the individuals involved & a tribute to those involved. Highly recommended.

Touching and Interesting yet, something is missing...........2001-02-17

....the book is touching and one can feels that the Author has very strong feelings toward the subject. One can feel the hardship that these young and brave men felt. But there is something missing, maybe more historical facts would have been nice. Still a great buy, if you want to get into the minds of the people who were there.

Best book I have read this year -- by far!.......1999-11-04

This book is an incredible blend of high quality photography -- from Lerman and archival --and memorable writing. These two skills seem most often to be mutually exclusive, but this is certainly not the case here. The story is compelling but it is the quality and passion of the writing which most impressed me. Not reading this book is like being aware of a great sunset and not watching it.

Very moving and poetic........1999-04-25

Hallie Lerman did a wonderful job finding a way to express the sentiment of Israeli soldiers who experienced the devastating frustration of the opening events of the Yom Kippur War on the Golan Hights. I served with Menachem Ansbacher until his release from the service several months after the war. We all looked up to him and thought of him to be the quintessential Israeli warrior. He was full of life and had a unique ability to motivate people when the chips were down. After reading this book, I realized the great pain Menachem and the others carried with them. A pain that was never verbalized, but, exposed in great detail in the book. I now know what was hiding behind his great smile. Though beyond all hope the war was won, many veterans of the Yom Kippur war are reluctant to discuss their experiences. As this wonderful, warm and poetic book illustrates, war is a terrible waste of human life. I lived 2 miles away from Tel Saki in Moshave Ely-Ad. When I would pass by There, I was always reminded of what Churchill once said -" Never in the field of human conflict, was so much owed by so many to so few". Shukym@aol.com

Decent info, reasonable advice, difficult to read!.......2007-06-13

Let's just say this isn't what I expected to come in the mail when I ordered it. It seems more like a magazine article published in book-form rather than a book. The text is small and even appears in columnar form, just like a magazine or newspaper article, with a few illustrations for flavor. The information itself is reasonable and practical, and I would like to try its suggestions...but even as an avid reader of all media, I'm having a hard time getting into it because of the format. Larger font, a more pleasing spacing, organized into more of a book format, would have been much better received and easier to utilize.

I was struggling to try and come up with a realistic allowance schedule, and this workbook really helped with that! Not only is my son's allowance more in line with his friends, but he's also very much interested in contributing a percentage to a savings account, and to a charity of his choice every week. I wish it had a little more information on guidelines for coming up with an allowance amount that includes paying for school lunches ($3 a day), without seeming like the kids aren't getting a fortune every week. All-in-all, it helped to establish a plan that both my son and I were happy with (he's 12)...

Was hoping to have much better tips for younger kids--as in the 5-year-old set. There was a Wall St. Journal article featuring the author, and his tips in that article were more succinct and what I was looking for regarding starting an allowance than this book was. But this is awesome for the tween and teen set with complete budgeting, spending and charitable donations worksheets. Would like more info. on the charity for the kids--like how to research, and invest in causes you believe in.

Who's Teaching Kids About Money?.......2004-11-16

I have reviewed the book for my online class, "Money Skills for Kids". I must say I am impressed with the simple (yet very detailed) plan the author proposes. Additionally, I find that not only the children will benefit from the teaching tools he presents, but their parents will also undergo a valuable education in money management.

One of the sections that stood out was the one on the "Sharing Money Challenge." I like the way the author helps children to integrate giving into their weekly routine, and the way he emphasizes that giving is just as much a part of spending an allowance as buying candy.

Please note that I have included the book into my course's required reading list.

These prophetic words, written shortly before Georg Simmel's death in 1918, have held true to the present day. His immense cultural capital was distributed to many heirs, but after his death little trace of his legacy remained. Although he was a member of the Department of Philosophy at Berlin University for most of his life, Simmel is most widely recognized not as a philosopher but as the founding father of the discipline of sociology. Attempting to Live a Normal Life in the German-Established Warsaw Ghetto.......2007-09-05

Owing to the fact that Korczak cared for children, it is not surprising that much of his diary is devoted to this subject. He mentions such challenges as child-care tips, discipline, and attempting to heal sick children. He also noted the pains of ageing that he experienced.

Korczak makes many interesting comments on various subjects. He often discusses what kind of God he believes in. He also writes: "The world doesn't know about a number of great Poles." (p. 8). Korczak mentions Jewish virtues such as cleverness and hard work (p. 102), but also comments: "Jews are cocky and that is why they are scorned. I believe that this will change and maybe even soon." (p. 106).

Unlike other diarists, Korczak devoted little direct attention to German Nazi actions in the Warsaw Ghetto. The consequences, however, were obvious: "A dead boy is lying on the sidewalk. Nearby three boys are fixing something with some rope. At a certain moment they glanced at the body and moved away a few steps, not interrupting their game" (p. 43). Korczak, an obvious intellectual, invited others to discussions in his flat about such topics as Napoleon, Leonardo da Vinci, freedom, destiny and free will, etc. (pp. 77-78). These Jewish behaviors shed light on comparable Polish ones. Holocaust materials have commonly featured the Poles engaged in normal activities (riding a carousel, attending Easter Mass, etc.) while the ghetto was burning--all insinuating the cold indifference of Poles to Jewish suffering. They were no such thing. We see that both Poles and Jews simply attempted to live lives as close to normal as possible in the face of all the horrors surrounding them.

In the introduction, Kulawiec elaborates on Polish efforts to save Janusz Korczak: "When it already became transparent that the days of the orphanage were numbered, friends from the outside proposed concrete plans for his escape. In one such final effort, forged papers were brought, a hide-out in the country prepared, and a safe route mapped out for him. As in all previous offers of help, Korczak declined even this last gesture inasmuch as it was not possible to include all the children in the plans." (p. xi).
