The Fodor Compass America Guide on Arizona was excellent. The book was uniquely organized with the first three chapters devoted to the dramatic Arizona landscape of deserts, mountains, and canyons. There are two chapters on the history of Arizona, honoring the early people who inhabited the area as well as recogizing the Hispanic missionaries, priests, and settlers. Because vast parts of Arizona belong to the Navajos, Apaches , Yavapais, Hopis, and smaller tribes, the book includes plenty of information about the native American people in this state. The book then covers the two large inhabited areas, Phoenix and Tucson. I found the book to be full of useful tips and practical information. The maps were very good, showing the deserts, the grand canyon, the Spanish Colonial settlements, the Native American reservations, and the larger cities. Also included was a section on the desert plants. The sections on the Grand Canyon were very helpful. We decided to hike to the bottom of the Canyon on the Bright Angel trail. We spent the night at the Phantom Ranch (which had hot showers). The following morning we hiked back up the Kaibab trail. This was an amazing experience. The book was very helpful as we explored Frank Lloyd Wright's home and architectural school/business in Scottsdale. This compound of buildings hugging the desert floor is worth a visit. Hold onto the steering wheel of your car on the twisting roads in the copper mining towns like Bisbee and Tombstone. I bought superb copper ore specimens - beautiful greens and blues. The Mexican atmosphere of Nogales, a border town, is nice. Nogales means "walnut" in Spanish but unfortunately the old walnut groves have long been chopped down. A special city is my opinion is the the wonderful multi-ethnic college town of Tucson. You might be surprised at the dramatic differences between Phoenix and Tuscon. It is hard not to fall in love with Tuscon with its mixture of cultures and peoples in a relaxed atmosphere. Whereas in Phoenix you see sprinklers trying to water struggling lawns, in Tucson the inhabitants are more likely to have desert gardens which waste far less water. I found the Fodor guide to be excellent and would strongly recommend it.

This was very helpful in studying for the CPA Exam on my own. Although I have not yet taken it, I feel that I will do just as well as I would have if I had taken a review course. Also, I have spent the same amount of time preparing as I would have if I had taken a course, except I spent much less on this "investment."

I picked up this book expecting an exciting "Law and Order" overview of a prosecutor fighting the good fight against the criminals of society. While this book certainly covers that, it also includes heartfelt stories of victims overcoming the odds, and heartbreaking ones of victims being cheated by the system. It shows Mrs. Pirro's efforts to address the wrongs she writes about in this book, especially in regards to crimes against women, children, the elderly and minorities. Remarkably, it's also a pretty easy read - I was able to read it in 2 days. I would definitely encourage you to read this book.

This book provides a succinct view of the Criminal Justice System, from an angle which many outside of Law Enforcement rarely see: the plight of the victims to endure and relive the horrors brought on them by predators, in their quest for justice. "To Protect and Punish," screams for reform. With each story told, comes the need to advocate for changes in our penal laws which have become outdated.

a fabulous read.......2005-09-11

For any Iranian, especially those who left revolutionary Iran in their teens, this is a must read. When I left, I was old enough to understand some things political but not most. This book sheds light on any number of subjects and people that I had been anxious to understand.

Mr. Milani's style of researched and carefully documented narrations leads one to believe that the work is historically accurate. Even if not fully so, there is a lot in there to learn about the history of Iran in the 20th century.

The book is written beautifully and impossible to put down. The superb English at times demands a dictionary.

The documented evidence, as opposed to rumors cited by most Iranians, showing the influence/control of foreign countries on the day to the day politics of Iran under Shah is breath taking. Another amazing revelation is Hoveyda's naivete about who the religious revolutionaries were and what he could expect from them. In spite of his attempts to be connected to ordinary people, we see that he had been isolated far too much from the turn of events, almost as if he was in a bubble. But on the whole and consistent with most Iranian's impression, Mr. Hoveyda comes out in somewhat better light than most of Shah's cronies.

Finally, one is left wondering about the turn of the events if Hoveyda had resigned in any of the countless opportunities he was afforded.

In the emotional fervor of revolutions, the protagonists are often portrayed as larger than life creators of history. In The Persian Sphinx, Milani restores humanity to the story of a man who is more notable for what he could have done than for what he did.

Hoveyda, like so many Iranian politicians through history was complicit in betraying his ideals through silence and acquiescence in the face of encroaching authoritarianism. The haunting story of Hoveyda shows us the paramount importance of integrity in leadership.

With a tumultuous period in Iranian history as a backdrop to the story, the reader gains insight into much more than Hoveyda's life including: the incompetent regime of the Shah, the causes of the 1979 revolution, and the barbarism of the revolutionary period.
A great read

I was blown away by how much I enjoyed this book........2004-09-01

I found this book to be very fascinating, fair, and extremely well written. Like other readers (below), it was hard for me to put the book down once I started reading it. Through the life of Prime Minister Hoveyda, we learn how and why the Iranian Revolution succeeded and understand the reign of terror that followed the collapse of the Iranian Monarchy in 1979. I must say I did not expect an easy read when I purchased the book as I had read Dr. Milani's "Lost Wisdom: Rethinking Modernity in Iran" and found the book to be fascinating but truly academic in language and tone. Simply put, this is a very readable book and I was blown away by how much I enjoyed it. Wonderful writing!

An extremely well written and well researched biography. It is clear that Mr. Milani is a true scholar. Rarely has a book about Iranian politics been so well researched and footnoted. Moreoever, The Persian Sphinx is easy to read. Entertaining to read for those without much knowledge about Iranian politics and a must for scholars of Iranian history and politics.

My Heart on the Yukon River is more than a collection of black and white portraits of people who live in remote places: It's the story of a woman who knew what she wanted out of life and had the courage to go after it.... In nearly every photograph, people are leaughing or smiling. No one seems to be taking themselves too seriously. Yet, Dykstra affords each person a sense of dignity. In one photograph of a woman, Suzanne Picot from Whitehorse, she poses in front of her car- painted to look like a car. Picot, who reveals in her interview that she's in love with a man who grew up on a dairy farm, is dressed like a dairy cow. She wears a black and white spotted jump suit, complete with rubber udders, horns and a cowbell necklace. Oddly, she doesn't look ridiculous. She just looks happy. For 2,000 miles, Dykstra remains optimistic and never stoops to exploit poverty, lonliness or human tragedy.... Dykstra's images are visually interesting and her text is a pleaure to read.... The greatest commandment in the Bible (for Jews and Christians) is to love the Lord your God with all your heart and mind and soul and strength. This is a book about loving God honestly. Chris Blake confronts barriers to loving God that he has had to overcome, that many of us struggle with. The book is liberating. In fact, one of the book's themes is that loving/knowing God sets us free and that freedom is sacred to God.

For example, Blake says, "Falling in love with God is impossible unless we understand His part in the world's suffering. God is a God of recovery...[It is misleading to state, in effect] 'The Doctor says that if his patients don't take their medicine, he will kill them'. . . Those who say, 'The Doctor told us that if his patients don't take their medicine, they will die,' present a truer picture. This compassionate doctor reasons and pleads, but the decision is finally ours."

Blake's writing flows and is well-organized. He does not ramble, but always has something to tell or teach. Sometimes he is funny; sometimes thought-provoking. Sometimes he relates his experiences with students, and it is evident he is a true teacher for the reader, communicating the subject with genuine passion. This book certainly has moved me and is one I will come back to again and again.

This book belongs on the same shelf as Harold S. Kushner, Philip Yancey, and Norman Vincent Peale.

Quite simply, this book has changed my life. As a christian who still has a lot of questions, I love how Chris's writing addressed so many deep yet everyday questions that I ponder. His style of writing and way of relating concepts are beautiful. I really just wish everyone could get a copy of this book - it is so full of tidbits of wisdom and passion and it truly will give you a new and refreshing perspective on the love of Jesus.

Not all of the book is biblically based........2001-08-23

This book starts out ok, but then in chpt.8 the author writes that there is no eternal punishment in hell for those who choose to reject Jesus as their savior. The author rejects Jesus' own words about hell that are in the gospels.(He doesn't reject the scriptures about heaven, however.) This doesn't represent the God of the bible accurately, and is misleading to "seekers".God is a God of Love, but also a God of Justice. The choice to reject Jesus is ours, but we must know the truth about the consequences of that choice.

LOVE this book! It's kind of cross between the Book of Job from the Bible and Jonathan Livingston Seagull. In the post 911-era, when we all wonder why bad things happen to good people, it's comforting to read that redemption is out there. One can't help but love Walt, the protagonist, and the plot twist at the end is fabulous. This author writes in an easy-to-digest manner, and the book can be read in a single sitting. Buy it and enjoy!

Having had the pleasure of talking to the author, I can tell you that there's no doubt where the voice in this book came from. Mr. Perkins is an upbeat, motivational, excitable guy, and it comes through in his writing. Some parts are a bit repetitive, but charmingly so. It's like reading the journal of a good friend who has been through a tough time and has inspired you with his strength.

It's a quick read, and worth the time to put a smile on your face. Get a copy, enjoy it, then recommend it to a friend.

A Book that must be read.......1999-02-22

This is a book that must be read by anyone interested in the Holocaust and Jewish life. It is unlike any Holocaust autobiography in that it involves Jewish life in South America. Even after living through the tragedies of the Holocaust Salomon Encourages joy and happiness. As a College student, and as Salomon's grandson this book touched my life in a very special way.

Excellent Compilation.......2003-03-30

The book has some excellent articles, offering invaluable prescriptive insights for those of us mired in the world of interorganizational alliance relationships. While the book is flavored to address the needs of businesses, the insights imparted can easily be adapted for any alliance. Different authors from across the world have contributed to this book, thereby smoothly blending in international and cultural points-of-view. Worth reading.

Good quality pulp fiction.......2007-03-04

This is a nice quality speciality press magazine. Full color art, mostly of pretty girls, associated with the stories. The stories themselves vary in quality, as to be expected. Some are good, some just adequate. Focus is on action and damsel in distress, tho' not exclusively. If you like pulp fiction from say 1930-1970, you'll like this

This is more a review of the entire line, which also includes Vampires 2 and Man's story 2, than it is of a single issue.

Worth a look if you like pulp fiction, I recommend it.

A Lot of Fun, Pulp Fiction Adventure!.......2007-01-25

This magazine is a pulpy, fun read. Lovely android girls and sf action. I've been a fan of author C. C. Blake's stories since I read his 2005 Story of the Year Award winner "Chuck Cave and the Vanishing Vixen" and this issue has a far future 'descendant' (maybe) of Chuck Cave, named Rick, saving a girl from an intergalactic crime lord type. Some nice pin up style art and some fun fiction for less than 10 bucks!
