2 out of 5 stars Filled with "Word Clutter".......2007-02-05

This book was definately not for me. I found it very wordy, repetitious, and boring. Mike, who is not a psychologist, tries to deal with clutter in terms of a person's mental condition. This is understandable, given his background and is probably interesting to many. He states "the 'why to' is more important then the 'how to'." I was looking for a "how to" book. This book is not filled with clever little tips and new ideas

I agree that clutter comes from procrastination, which (frequently) comes from depression. But depression often has it's roots in fear. My personal solution to procrastination is (1) take things in small, manageable bites (i.e. make small, manageable goals) and (2) either do the one thing that you have been putting off the longest or the one thing you are avoiding or afraid to do FIRST. After that everything is easier.

I was very dissapointed in the chapter on fung shui. It was basiclaly a chapter on what Feng Shui is, not how to use it. There were also way too many personal stories for my taste. A few are fine, but not on every page.

If you are looking for an excuse to put off picking up your stuff for a bit longer, spend your time reading this book. It might make you feel better and will certainly let you know you are not alone. If you want to just get to it,
                pick another book.

                4 out of 5 stars A clutter-free book about becoming clutter-free.......2005-05-27

This book examines the root causes of clutter and offers tips to prevent clutter from infecting one's office and reducing productivity. It offers suggestions from several professionals and business coaches in the attempt to create a method with long term results.

5 out of 5 stars Take Control of Your Life!!!.......2002-08-24

These days, it is easier than ever to accumulate "stuff". In my case, that "stuff" is in various forms of information, both electronic and in print. Everyone collects a certain amount of stuff over the years. What most of us don't realize is how much our stuff takes away from our productivity. Stuff slows us down more than we realize. Why have stuff? Because we think it makes life easier; it provides a comfort zone. But filing, organizing, storing, moving, and searching through stuff is actually enslaving! If it is piled up on your desk, as in my case, then it is even more burdening. Ugh!

Every single item that you own takes a certain amount of maintenance. It has to be stored, occassionally reviewed, periodically relocated, and rarely, if ever, it gets used. Because of "stuff", you need a better filing system, more shelves, larger hard disks, and so on. Stuff makes life more complicated, more stressful. Take a moment and think about it. Does your "stuff" really make life better? Or is it simply providng a comfort zone for you? The irony is, your comfort is diminished by this so called "comfort zone" created from all this "stuff". It is time to get your act together, isn't it? Cerainly it is for me! Get un-cluttered!

Mike is an expert on the subject of clutter. He explains the importance of minimizing and he explains why less is more. Let Mike show you how to clean up that clutter and keep it that way.

In this information age, where everyone collects every bit of data on every subject known to man, it is more important than ever to find peace in efficiency. Don't let stuff rule your business and your life. Control the clutter, minimize the stuff, and you will be more efficient and effective in your business and personal life.

5 out of 5 stars Real help, not just generalizations about organizing.......2002-08-01

Unlike most books that tell you how to organize your filing systems, this one gives you options to personalize your own system. Mr. Nelson understands that traditional organizing tips are like Chinese food. A week after trying them, you are hungry for real, lasting help.

Nelson is obvioulsy someone who has been there (been disorganized) and overcome it. His writing is straighforward, humorous (without being cute, or talking down to the reader) and not preachy. He gets you to understand that fear of making decisions, of making a mistake or low self-esteem keep us from getting and staying organized. He applies a combination of psychology, Neuro Linguistic Programming, memory enhancement techniques, visualizations and special tools for those with AD/HD (Attention Deficit Disorder).

His unique filing sytems tailored for your own personal learning style and the aids to improving your memory are worth the price of the book by themselves. Throw in the decision-making matrix and you have a real bargain. He gives us tools to change our lives, not just band-aids to neaten up piles of papers.

This is not like any other business organizing book you've ever read. It is better. And I have read them all.

5 out of 5 stars Clutter Proof Your Business: Turn Your Mess into Success.......2002-07-29

I would like to share with others how much I appreciate this book. I thought Mr. Nelson's "Stop Clutter From Stealing Your Life" was good and was looking forward to this latest book, but this one has been phenomenal for me. I have been able to instantly apply many of the ideas presented. The book has helped me to learn so much about myself. I could only read one chapter a night because I would get so revved up reading the stuff I would have difficulty falling asleep! I am really impressed with the research and quoting of other peoples work. Mike Nelson's work is a shining light helping many people free themselves from clutter.

                  Book Description

Biological resource centers (BRCs) are the world's "living libraries." BRCs offer independent and shared access to authenticated biological materials for research applications in the life sciences in government, industry, and academia. They maintain large and varied collections—including cell lines, microorganisms, recombinant DNA material, and biological media and reagents—and information technology tools that allow researchers to access biological materials.

BRCs have established themselves as a crucial element in the life science innovation infrastructure, but today the confront new challenges resulting from shifts in the nature of biological research, the interaction between public and private researchers and the increasing focus on biosecurity.

Here, Scott Stern provides a systematic economic assessment of the impact of biological resource centers through their role in facilitating cumulative knowledge in the life sciences and their role as knowledge hubs—institutions that facilitate the transfer of scientific and technical knowledge among members of a research community.

The knowledge hubs framework offers insight into how to develop and evaluate policy proposals that impinge on control of an access to biological materials. Stern argues that science and innovation policy must be premised on a clear understanding of the role that knowledge hubs play on policy mechanisms that encourage their sustained growth and effectiveness.

                    Book Description

This provocative report examines the trend toward competitive contracting of government functions. By focusing on four jurisdictions that hired private firms to handle welfare-to-work services, The Welfare Marketplace reveals the ways in which increased contracting with the private and nonprofit sectors is changing the role and capacity of government, threatening accountability and responsiveness to groups with special needs. Encouraging improved performance through market mechanisms creates particular challenges for the nonprofits who must balance their missions with the bottom line.

The organization of service delivery to welfare clients has undergone significant restructuring as a result of the 1996 Welfare Reform Act, which encouraged states to contract with outside companies and for the first time allowed them to determine eligibility for welfare benefits. Seeking to assess the impact of this development, M. Bryna Sanger studied the competitive contract environment in San Diego, Milwaukee, New York, and Houston. Interviewing contracters, public officials, opinion leaders, and researchers revealed the comparative advantages of a variety of key players in the multi-sector service industry.

Sanger's conclusions paint a complex picture of how competitive contracting arrangements have changed the ways vendors and government agencies serve their clients. While performance and innovation have improved in some cases, all the players are finding that adequate accountability and contract monitoring are more difficult and expensive than anticipated. Both for profits and nonprofits are quickly draining talent and capacity as they compete for experienced executives from government and from each other.

Sanger argues that competitive contracting is here to stay, but it will require more—not less—government management and oversight. She urges scholars and practitioners to develop a more nuanced and sophisticated set of expectations about the costs and benefits of increased market arrangements for service delivery, especially when serving vulnerable populations.

                          Book Description

In 1981 Chile's military government dictated a new Water Code that radically changed the country's previous water rights system by strengthening private property rights, favoring market incentives, and reducing state regulation. Against the Current: Privatization, Water Markets, and the State in Chile is the first empirical and interdisciplinary study of water markets in Chile, which is the leading international example of free market water policies.
Against the Current: Privatization, Water Markets, and the State in Chile challenges the glowing reports given by neoliberals in Chile and the World Bank, showing that the results of this economic experiment have actually been rather mixed. Within the agricultural sector the Water Code has worked fairly well, although the market incentives to conserve water have been ineffective and water rights trading has been less active than expected. The Code's impact has been more negative at the level of river basins, where the institutional framework has revealed critical flaws in coordinating multiple water users and resolving conflicts.
Against the Current: Privatization, Water Markets, and the State in Chile combines law, political economy, and geography to analyze the disadvantages, problems, and wider contexts of water markets. This book will appeal to everyone interested in property rights, market-friendly environmental policies, the political economy of sustainable development, and the intersection of economics with law and institutions.

                          Book Description

Diary of a Redneck Vampire is the journal of a 23 year-old female drummer, begun shortly after auditioning for the all-male heavy metal band The Redneck Vampires in 1993.

New to the band, Flo finds herself the only girl in a man's world, and she kept this diary to deal with her changing life. She captures the band's plight as they tour North America, living on stranger's couches, fighting among themselves, getting and losing record deals, and performing for just enough cash to make it to the next town. In addition to the pursuit of rock stardom, Flo also seriously studied the pagan religion of Wicca, and her spiritual life grows and changes as the pages turn. You will laugh at the idiocy, experience the raging, energetic crowds from the view of a drummer playing on stage, and recognize the struggle bands go through to meet their definition of success.

Full of the drugs, the drama, and the dreams of rock and roll, Diary of a Redneck Vampire pushes limits and exposes the ugly truth of the beginning stages of a band in their struggle to make it in the music industry, shared uniquely from the perspective of a female participant.

4 out of 5 stars A continuous movement of something abundant........2007-06-10

Late the week before last I ordered a copy of Diary of a Redneck Vampire. Let's say I did so at the recommendation of a friend. Last Thursday, it arrived. I cut open the box, sliced away the shrink wrap, and only meant to browse the first few pages before getting back to work. Instead, I ended up devouring the first fifty pages. Before I knew it, two hours had passed and it was time for me to go get the kids and head for home. Yesterday afternoon, circumstances allowed me to pick up the book again, for only the second time, mind you, and four hours later I finished it. I simply could not put it down.

I'll admit there is a personal bias at work here in my enthusiasm for the book. One that shall remain, well, personal. But I trust my objectivity when I declare this is an amazing tale of magic, despair, wonder, determination and self-discovery. If you've ever read anything of Joseph Campbell, it's every bit a classic hero's journey. The writing is open, fresh and direct, and every now and then the author turns a phrase that made me quirk my mouth in envy. And the best thing of all? It actually happened.

Get yourself a copy. You will so not be cruised.

5 out of 5 stars An excellent read.......2007-02-06

Some of the experiences of this young woman rock-and-roller are extreme, but as the narrator, she is human, rational, and down-to-earth. A great story of 80's rock and roll in the mid-south.

5 out of 5 stars The Real Deal.......2004-08-10

Flo has written the true account of her time in the rock world. As a teen, I was close friends with the author. Her book is the real deal - She has bared her soul for all of us in this book. I laughed at some points, and cried with her at others. A great read for any of us who have ever wondered "am I good enough?"
