Book Description
A well-written and accessible introduction to futures trading, this book focuses on practical strategies that can be easily applied by average investors. This edition includes sections on currency trading and spreads. Specific topics include: Futures market basics; Fundamental and technical analysis; Speculating, hedging and spreading strategies; Trading stocks, bonds, currencies and soybeans.
Customer Reviews:
Strictly for the Beginner.......1999-01-17
The contents of the book whets your appetite for some useful information. The reality falls far short of your expectations however. The technical analysis section presents nothing you should not already know and is very weak. Many of the examples are of very radical events in historical perspective. If you are looking for real strategy and technical analysis keep searching. If you wish to learn the fundamentals this may be useful. The charts present the profit/loss potential involved in trading.
A Good Beginner's Book.......1998-09-20
This book and Todd Lofton's "Getting Started in Futures" are probably the best beginner's books in the market. These 2 books give you a feel for the futures game, to let you decide whether you should participate in it or not. This book touches most aspects of trading, but you should study a thicker deeper hard cover book by Jack Schwager, Perry Kaufman, Martin Pring or John Murphy before committing serious money to the game.
Book Description
In an age of ethical decay at organizations of every type, a call is being sounded for accountability. Accordingly, companies must educate their employees and executives regarding acceptable practice. The Business Ethics Activity Book presents an array of provocative activities that will help encourage a more ethical approach to:
* Leadership: promoting courage, commitment, and moral responsibility * Workplace conduct: building an ethical environment on individual behavior * Salesmanship: exploring the relationships between sellers and their customers * Management: leading employees by example in daily situations * Teamwork: fostering group behavior that reflects the company's moral outlook
Each section features an interview with a leading ethicist, and every activity provides step-by-step instructions. Also, discussion prompts and suggestions for variations enable the trainer or leader to expand each exercise's application. These exercises will push organizations to challenge the climate of questionable or unexamined ethics and recommit themselves to responsible business methods.
Customer Reviews:
Not Worth The Money.......2007-01-09
I purchased this book for my college students in hopes that it would be some type of hands on activity about Ethics that would make a statement. This book was of no value to me what so ever. It was a waste of money.

Book Description
This book examines the failure of economic reform in Russia since 1991, when Boris Yeltsin proclaimed his commitment to economic stabilization, privatization, and price liberalization. Optimism over Russia's market reforms vanished with the crash of August 1998, when the ruble lost over 70 percent of its value and banks defaulted on their debts and forward currency contracts. Contrary to Yeltsin's reform promises, the Russian economy of the 1990s more closely resembled a Soviet model than a market-driven one. The Logic of Economic Reform in Russia illuminates the general problems of establishing market economies in settings where the institutional system to support the market has not had decades to develop. Suggesting that corruption may be associated with growth in the early stages of capitalism, Jerry F. Hough argues that the disappointing results of Yeltsin's reform efforts were not the product of Russian culture or history, but the logical consequences of rational men responding to the incentive system created by economic reform.

Great Start, But Far From Complete.......2000-12-31
This book is a good starting point for anyone considering forming a non-profit. It outlines the pros and cons of incorporation, and takes the mystery out of the incorporation process. The sample letters of incorporation, bylaws, and organizational meeting minutes were very helpful. But don't buy the book expecting it to be your only resource.
The book focuses almost exclusively on incorporating in Deleware. Although any organization can incorporate in Deleware - with possible advantages - it is worth researching the laws in your own state. You may be able to obtain the same advantages, with far less paperwork.
The most disappointing aspect of this book was that, despite the advertising on the cover, it has not been "newly revised" since 1993. The IRS forms, filing fees, and registered agent services are out of date.
Finall, I was disappointed to find that, because of its age, no internet resources are listed in the book, a serious drawback considering that all of the forms and instructions I needed were available from the IRS and State of California websites.
Overall, I found the book to be worth its price, but in this fast-changing world, it is in serious need of a "new" new revision.
A GOOD START BUT............2000-10-20
I have read this book and I will tell you, it is a very GOOD START but I was very disappointed that it didn't list a vast sort of agencies nationwide. I Live in Illinois and the information is basically for Delaware. This is why I only gave it 4 stars. You still have to do some research on your own but you definitely get your feet wet if you know what I mean. Buy this book to get you started and keep it to go back to when things get a little bit shaky from time to time. The tax forms part was very impressive..actual sample forms, addresses, etc. This book helped eliminate a lot of my worries and red tape. Good luck to all of you Non-Profiters and God BLESS!
Excellent guide.......1999-12-10
Very interseting, informative, and quick reading. Gives you a vast amount of information to successfully start a non proft corporation through filliing of your certificate of incorporation.

Book Description
Covering the period from 1950 through 1988 this book examines the role of a large bureaucracy under the Shah and post-revolutionary changes in that bureaucracy under the Islamic Republic. It focuses on the role of one of the most powerful bureaucracies in Iran, the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development (MARD). The author explains how the MARD transformed rural Iran from a feudalistic social system to a capitalistic system of economy. It helped maintain and enhance the Pahlavi regime under the Shah by developing and guarding capitalism in rural Iran. These two objectives were achieved through rural bureaucratization and extension of the State's control to the remotest areas of Iran. The author also discusses the impact of the Revolution of 1978-79 on Iranian bureaucracy. Iran has been one of the oldest historical bureaucratic empires the world has ever known. During the Pahlavi regime, bureaucracy was the main instrument of policy formulation and ligitimation. This book fills many of the gaps in our present knowledge of Iranian bureaucracy, particularly in relation to agrarian reform and regime politics. Ali Farazman has based his study on primary data including 150 interviews, the examination of numerous government documents, and, as a former Iranian administrator, direct observations. MARD was chosen as this book's focus for several reasons. It was central to the Shah's regime during the 1960s-1970s. Until the 1960s three quarters of Iran's population lived in rural areas under a feudal system. During this period MARD grew at an unprecedented rate. Through land reform it created a new class of allies for the Shah. It was instrumental in the destruction of Iran's agriculture, making it dependent on foreign imports. It contributed nine million rural migrants to the cities ultimately fueling the Revolution of 1978-79. The author has chosen MARD as representative of a powerful Iranian bureaucracy.
Book Description
As a little boy, Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart began writing musical compositions when most kids his age are still learning to read. By the time he was seven, Mozart was an accomplished musician who could play several instruments and also sing. Accompanied by his older sister, Nannerl, and his father, Leopold, young Wolfgang toured Europe. He performed before royalty and some of the richest members of society. By the time he was twelve, Wolfgang was famous.
He first tasted failure as a teenager, as audiences ignored his operas, and he had trouble making money. He began to be known for his bad jokes and relentless pursuit of women. He eventually married the sister of the woman who broke his heart.
In adulthood, Mozart's problems grew. He couldn't keep a job. He was usually broke. One of the greatest composers the world has ever known was forced to make a living giving piano lessons. Yet today he is one of the most celebrated and respected composers of all time.
Book Description
Born just a few years after Wolfgang Mozart died, Franz Schubert had a lot in common with the famous composer. Schubert was also a gifted child who astonished adults with his musical ability. As a teen, Schubert was taught by one of Mozart's rivals. And like Mozart, Schubert's life ended prematurely and was filled with struggle.
Still, while Mozart was celebrated across Europe, Schubert was almost completely unknown until just a few years before his death. Mozart worked as a court compser; Schubert couldn't get a job. The challenges of Schubert's life inspired his art music which is today performed across the world. Schubert's life, his challenges and his compositions are all reasons he is considered one of our great composers.

Book Description
“Haley” Jackson grew up in poverty on the levees of New Orleans, hunting alligators along the Mississippi River for food and gathering driftwood for fuel with her brother Peter. But every Sunday, when her father preached at the Baptist Church, young Mahalia sang proudly in the choir—the youngest member at age 5! Lively illustrations and engaging text pull young readers into the world in which Mahalia Jackson grew up. Whether constructing her doll’s braid from blades of grass, stuffing a cornhusk mattress, or adjusting to life in her Aunt Duke’s home after her mother died, young Mahalia displayed the persistence and courage that foreshadowed the civil rights champion and world-famous gospel singer she would become. Working as a maid and a laundress, she always found the time for her passion—singing her special brand of music known as gospel in churches. She met the challenge of being black in what was largely a white entertainment world, overcoming poverty and prejudice and pioneering the way for all aspiring African Americans who succeeded her. Singing for royalty, presidents, and working closely with her friend Martin Luther King, Haley never forgot her early days on the levee and she found special joy encouraging young African-Americans to follow their ambitions.

Book Description
Thirteen musicians from diverse cultures, time periods, and stations in life are presented here as examples of what gifted and determined young people have achieved in their artistic careers before they turned 25 years old. Students will be inspired as they read the life stories of these musicians, who often had to overcome such obstacles as poverty and racism in order to create and to share their works. Teachers and librarians looking for biographies of truly gifted young people for their students will find an inspiring collection of both classical composers and modern-day talents--some for which little information has been published previously. Students will meet such individuals as Bach, Beethoven, and Mozart, the classical giants who practiced and composed for hours each day in their early childhood to create the standards of perfection in music to which all composers aspire, as well as people like Ray Charles, who overcame blindness and severe poverty to become a best-selling singer and songwriter, and such popular performers as Charlotte Church and Midori. Entries have been carefully selected to represent men and women of various backgrounds, nationalities and talents to provide a well-rounded sampling. Each entry concludes with a bibliography of resources for students who wish to explore the subject further.

Review of the book "50 Years of Rock Music" by Chambers.......2005-02-21
Some things in life are shameful, and this book is an example.
Claiming to provide "detailed, reliable information", this book is instead full of false and misleading information. It will be clear to even the most amateur of music history buffs that the purported "facts" contained within these pages are in truth nothing more than inuendo and rumor. It's obvious that the "facts" were not researched with any rigor at all. The book seems more an effort to bias the reader into accepting the author's opinions, tastes, and misguided beliefs.
Thank goodness not all "Encyclopedic" literature falls to this level. It's much worse to spread misinformation than to say nothing at all. Do yourself a favor and don't take a stroll down this shameful avenue of lies.
A fun, quick read about some of music's greatest artists!.......2004-11-18
This book is very compact, with one artist per page. I liked reading it because I learned a lot about blues greats that I never knew before. The authors are European, so some of the bands listed were big in Europe without being much of a hit in America and may not be familiar to you. It's not an exhaustive history of music, but makes for a fun and educational read.
Incomplete and biased..........2002-06-04
I won't dwell long on this book, suffice to say that while it's mostly well-written and competently-researched, it is VERY incomplete and there are some blatant inaccuracies. And how can SADE be considered an influence of any sort in music when others such as Marc Bolan and Madness (The Beat have a small section and The Specials are mentioned in a sentence, but no Madness... that's unforgiveable!) are not even mentioned at all. All in all, it's an entertaining read for the most part, but hardly accurate and justified in its lack of knowledge on ALL aspects of music!
Book Description
As one of the best-known honky tonkers to appear in the wake of Hank Williams’s death, Faron Young was a popular presence on Nashville’s music scene for more than four decades. The Singing Sheriff produced a string of Top Ten hits, placed over eighty songs on the country music charts, and founded the long-running country music periodical
Music City News in 1963. Flamboyant, impulsive, and generous, he helped and encouraged a new generation of talented songwriter-performers that included Willie Nelson and Bill Anderson. In 2000, four years after his untimely death, Faron was inducted into the Country Music Hall of Fame.
Presenting the first detailed portrayal of this lively and unpredictable country music star, Diane Diekman masterfully draws on extensive interviews with Young’s family, band members, and colleagues. Impeccably researched, Diekman’s narrative also weaves anecdotes from
Louisiana Hayride and other old radio shows with ones from Young’s business associates, including Ralph Emery. Her unique insider’s look into Young’s career adds to an understanding of the burgeoning country music entertainment industry during the key years from 1950 to 1980, when the music expanded beyond its original rural roots and blossomed into a national (ultimately, international) enterprise. Echoing Young’s characteristic ability to entertain and surprise fans, Diekman combines an account of his public career with a revealing, intimate portrait of his personal life.
Customer Reviews:
The Beauty of Truth.......2007-09-05
What appeals to me as a reader -- and what I admire about Diane as a writer and biographer -- is that Faron is revealed as a "man in full." Faron possessed a magical voice, a gift for entertaining, an appreciation for his artistic abilities, but he apparently was also possessed by the demons of depression.
Years of research, and a compassionate understanding of the man behind the music, gives readers (and history) a book wherein Diane examines Faron's life and death, never hiding sad truths that sometimes leave a reader reeling, but yet we know she loved and respected the man and his art.
~ Gary
One Of The Best Biographies Ever!!! WOW!.......2007-08-26
This is one of the best biographies I have ever read about anyone. This book is very well-written, as it portrays Faron Young as a person first. Many biographies about musical artists talk way too much about the music, and not enough about the person. Faron Young's music speaks for itself. However, no one has ever known that much about his life, other than that he was a colorful character who sang country music, used salty language and drank too much. Diekman paints a much more detail picture of an outwardly simple, yet internally very complex man. As you read this book, you will feel the tremendous highs and lows that Young went through in his happy yet often painful life. You will also feel the alternating sense of fun and nervous tension that friends and family felt around him. Once I started reading this book, I could not stop. And while I like Faron Young music, I am not what one would consider to be a die-hard fan. This book took me back through Young's life, as well as the lives of those around him. It is also sad to see how such a super talent died so sad and bitter. But after reading this terrific book, I understand why he died as he did. I have read thousands of bios on everyone from John Adams to Patsy Cline. This is definitely in the top three. It is simply WONDERFUL................It reads great, and paints such a illustrative picture of a man who, I thought I knew a little about........but after reading this book, I realize how little I really knew! I'm gonna read it again, and then go out and buy some Faron Young music. BRAVO!
Great On Facts, a Bit Short On Music.......2007-08-24
This book is extremely informative on Faron Young's life, all the way to his horrible death. The writer got to know Faron while he was alive and she did a prodigious amount of research. And she's extremely fair in giving all sides of this complex, troubled performer.
Where the book surprisingly falls a bit short is in conveying the magic of his music. Faron made some great--even iconic--records. As one example, I looked up "Wine Me Up." Diekman recounts that Faron recorded the song and album, but the account is flat: there's no indication of how he hit it out of the ballpark, coming out of nowhere to record what's arguably the greatest drinking record of the '60s. Or "It's Four In The Morning", Faron's last number 1 hit. The writer does not attempt to convey what a great record it was.
That's a small complaint. As someone--Was it Elvis Costello?--said: "Writing about music is like dancing about architecture."
For anybody interested in classic honky tonk country, this is a great book.

Book Description
The 1940's was a time when society thought it improper for women to make a sax wail or let loose hot licks on skins, but with the advent of World War II and many men away fighting the war, women finally got their chance to strut their stuff on the bandstand. These all-girl bands kept morale high on the homefront and on USO tours of miltary bases across the globe while also helping to establish America's legacy in jazz music.
"Take-off?" Oh, yeah. Several all-girl bands did.
This book includes a hip swing CD.

brave and brilliant contribution to women's music.......2007-07-26
To all naïve readers who still think Kathleen Hanna, Courtney Love or Liz Phair were doing anything new by boldly storming their way into previously male territory, may I suggest Tonya Bolden's Take-Off? A quick and easy read, complete with photos, newspaper clippings and an obsessive amount of research, Take-Off chronicles the rise and eventual fall of "all-girl" big bands of the World War II era, proving once and for all that every female musician from Nancy Wilson to the Go-Go's to any number of riot grrrls would still be just singing in the shower were it not for the brave and brilliant contribution of the swing musicians who fought sexual and racial discrimination in order to prove, in no uncertain terms, that "girl musicians...are as much the masters of their instruments as are male musicians."
Take-Off (which is slang for an improv solo) tells an abbreviated story, for sure, but nonetheless lays it out: 16 million American men served in World War II, and their absence created room for more than just Rosie the Riveter; it also allowed space for The Hour of Charm All Girl Orchestra, Ada Leonard (a former stripper) and her All-American Girl Orchestra, and The International Sweethearts of Rhythm, among others. And while Take-Off will never be confused with a hard-hitting piece of feminist scholarship, Bolden does offer tentative critiques of the ways in which patriarchy forced the hands of the women she chronicles, explaining, for example, that as female musicians got bolder and player harder music, they compensated by dressing softer, trading in their simple skirts and blouses for strapless gowns with hem-to-hem ruffles the musicians had to iron on their travel suitcases. She also dedicates significant time detailing race relations of the time and the importance of single-race bands.
Bolden's use of jazz-era slang throughout the book often feels a bit silly and heavy-handed, but Take-Off is still a commendable exploration of the women who worked to dismantle the myth that "only God can make a tree, and only men can play good jazz." And perhaps best of all, the book comes with a CD of some of the most exciting swing music to come from the WWII era, reason enough to buy this book! While Take-Off is hardly definitive, it takes a necessary step in establishing that contrary to public opinion of the time, not all "women like violins."

One in a million.......2007-05-30
Ruth Neray's book is one of the most extraordinary Shoah testimonies I have read. She did not just return from the house of death but she returned to life. Whatever allowed her to do so is the essence of what makes it worth living. Anyone who survived to testify had some of this miraculous essence and her astonishing revival as a person is not a criticism of those who could only bear life after Auschwitz only for a time. They too had the essence that makes her a marvel. And so do we all, for whatever sustained Ruth Neray may be something rather commonplace, like breathing or the soul.
Exciting book with a happy ending.......2001-01-13
"To Auschwitz and Back: My Personal Journey" is profound, moving, warm, and at times even humorous. It will enrich your life and leave you inspired with Ruth's courage and dignity. In Ruth's words, "They could take everything away from me, but they could not take away my dreams."
