National Geographic's familiar golden-yellow border bespeaks the quality color photographs (250 of them!) that make this guidebook as fun to look at as it is to read. More than 200 state parks in all 50 states are skillfully reported on in classic National Geographic style. Each section includes a park overview, driving directions, suggestions for what to see and do, and camping and lodging ideas. After these parks were chosen from the recommendations of state-park directors, National Geographic sent regional travel writers to work exploring, collecting firsthand details, and gleaning insider information from park staff. Clearly marked maps are easy to use and lead the reader through many of the selections, detailing important sights, trails, and campgrounds. Sidebars offer extra advice and historical or environmental accounts.
Customer Reviews:
The title is misleading!.......2003-04-24
This should really have been called "Our Favorite State Parks," because it only covers a tiny fraction of the nation's state parks. For example, Arizona has 29 state parks, but you'll only find four listed here. Pennsylvania has 116 state parks; again, this book lists only four of them. The other 112 parks are simply omitted.
The book is attractively designed, well illustrated and printed on glossy paper, as you'd expect from the National Geographic Society. But if you were looking for a comprehensive guide to all the state parks, you're going to be sorely disappointed. What you get for your money is a small, slickly produced guide to the most popular 5% or so--the same parks everybody else is heading for. The other 95% are left out...you'll have to look elsewhere to discover them.
A fine guide to many hidden gems........2002-07-23
For the most part, our country's most spectacular natural sights are in our national parks. However, the discerning traveler can also find much to admire and photograph in our many fine state parks.. This book covers some of the best from each state. Some would even be in the national park system if not already protected by the states.
The usual excellent National Geographic photography attends a fine, readable text. Maps show you where to go and how to get there. I really believe that anyone planning a motor trip should consult this book before drawing up an itinerary. Otherwise, you run the risk of missing much that is great in our country.
A definite must for the traveler. I recommend it very highly.
Unique and valuable.......2000-12-30
Although there is plenty of material on our National Park System, there is little information on state parks. And there are some fascinating state parks out there. This book seeks to fill that gap by providing brief but adequate information on over 200 parks in all 50 states. If you do the math, you'll see that there can be only brief descriptions of 200 parks fitted into this 384 page book. But there is a surprising amount of information crammed into each of the articles, even including some nice, but small photos. The main service this guide performs is highlighting the best parks in the Park System of each state, and giving you enough information to get there and enjoy them. It is not (and realistically cannot be) an exhaustive guide to each listed park, or to all state parks. Well worth buying if the subject interests you. If you've read the review this far, I think you'll like the book!

Customer Reviews:
Not exactly rocket science.......2006-08-15
Merchandising math is all straight-forward algebra. This large format 340 page book is padded with a comprehensive description of merchandising, from fashion forecasting to merchandise hierarchies to vendor relations. The most useful information I found was how P&L is expanded for a typical retailer, and explanations of retail terms like maintained and cumulative margin. The exercises on planning P&L, preparing a six month plan and calculating OTB were useful, but the book is aimed at college students, anyone with retail work experience will find much of the material pretty obvious.
EXCELLENT.......2006-02-23
I received my order promptly and the book was in excellent condition complete with working CD!

Book Description
Financial management is emerging as a critical force in everyday management. The continuing upward spiral of inflation, rising cost of governmental programs, and citizens' demands for better cost-effective delivery of goods and services are forcing public managers and other not-for-profit organizations to make creative use of their scarce financial resources. In this new and updated edition, chapters place new and special emphasis on ceiling and target base budget estimating, ratio analysis, TQM, and internal control cost systems. Accountability is given a fresh approach, as it deals with the complicated issues of today's nonprofit organizations. This volume is imperative reading for managers, administrators, scholars, teachers, and students of financial management of public and nonprofit organizations, including the health care industry, public affairs, political science, as well as schools of public health and social work. New measurement indicator terms that have recently entered the literature are introduced, showing how they are linked to accountability and TQM. Recent developments in revenue, purchasing and inventory, cash, risk management borrowing, and debt management are also incorporated. Particular emphasis is given to performance measurements and their linkage to budgeting and management. The PPBS system that has been developed in response to the dissatisfaction with traditional line-item and performance budgeting is given its own, in-depth chapter and analysis. An important section of the book addresses fraud, waste, and abuse. Because financial management is the only activity that touches every employee in an organization, this is an indispensable book for managers on the state and local level.

Book Description
"If each individual in your organization became Shareholder Value-focused and made all of their decisions accordingly, you would have an almost incomprehensible competitive advantage." -Lawrence B. M. Serven.
For some time now, the conviction has been growing that traditional business planning methods are flawed and inefficient. At many companies, attempts have been made to address the problem with new budgeting systems, complete benchmarking studies, and reorganizations of finance functions. Unfortunately, while such initiatives may help reduce planning time, fundamentally they do little or nothing to make the planning process more effective. In this groundbreaking book, Lawrence Serven exposes the real reasons why planning so often fails to get results, and shows you how to transform the planning process from an "exercise in minimization" into a potent, results-driven management system that consistently creates shareholder value.
While most books on the subject discuss value creation in terms of grand strategic moves made by upper management, Value Planning takes a bottom-up approach. Lawrence Serven demonstrates how it is the cumulative effect of all of the little decisions made by individuals throughout an organization, every day, that makes or breaks shareholder value. More importantly, he shows you how to capitalize on that fact, and use business planning as a strategic management tool for aligning all levels of an organization-from the executive suite to the mail room-behind the common goal of increasing shareholder value.
Short on theory and long on step-by-step practical guidance, Value Planning gives you a complete blueprint for implementing a comprehensive value planning management system in your enterprise. Each chapter isolates a key aspect of value-driven business planning and contrasts it with traditional business planning models. Within each chapter you will also find valuable, easy-to-perform self-diagnostics that help you to assess your company's current status in the area under discussion, and a set of "Improve-ment Steps" that can easily be tailored to fit the realities of your organization.
Value Planning is an indispensable working resource for controllers, CFOs, finance directors, and budget directors, as well as for all upper-level managers involved in the planning process.
His work has been profiled in CFO magazine and Controller's Magazine, and he is the author of several articles that have appeared in Chief Information Officer and Technical Analysis of Stocks and Commodities. An award-winning public speaker, he has been the featured speaker at the AICPA and chaired a World Research Group international conference on reengineering the planning process.
Praise for Value Planning
"Serven demystifies shareholder value creation and provides a pragmatic, actionable guidebook for executives. Value Planning's step-by-step management system focuses business planning on delivering, not just predicting results. The book's self-diagnostic measures should prove especially useful in charting and assessing organizational progress." -Henry A. McKinnell President, Pfizer Inc.
"Value Planning addresses today's number one management issue - building a value management system-and provides a systematic approach with clear guidance that will be helpful to any company in creating shareholder value. I really enjoyed reading this book and highly recommend it."- John B. Menzer Executive Vice President and Chief Financial Officer, Wal-Mart Stores, Inc.
"Mr. Serven's approach is insightful and uncomplicated. Rather than simply focusing on theory, he has offered compelling real-life examples of how well-known leaders and their companies have built value for their shareholders." -Keith Rauschenbach Second Vice President, TIAA-CREF.
Customer Reviews:
Good step by step guidelines.......2000-07-04
I am in the process of implementing some of what this suggested, and the step by step approach makes it a lot easier.
Finally, something PRACTICAL on shareholder value.......1998-12-24
Every book I have read about shareholder value has been long on theory and short on application, but Value Planning is different. It provides a hands on blueprint for creating a value management system to grow shareholder value. It's about time!
A blueprint for creating a value management system!.......1998-12-01
A lot has been written about shareholder value, but there has been little written about how to put theory into practice, which is what this book does. I highly recommend it.
One of the best management books ever written.......1998-11-03
I am sure any number of businesses will benefit greatly from his book. Mr.Servens keen insight into the corporate world has proven invaluable. I especially recommend this book to budding entreprenuers, social climbers and misanthropes.

Book Description
Readers get an interesting glimpse into the lives of Benjamin Franklin, George Washington, John Adams, Patrick Henry, Thomas Jefferson, and James Madison.
Customer Reviews:
Boring..........2007-08-05
This book seemed to be written over a weekend to catch the 'Founding Fathers' craze. It was poorly written, very large print (I assume to stretch the page count), and it seemed to be a rehash of other's work. I wouldn't buy it. 'Founding Brothers: The Revolutionary Generation' is a much better read.
snoozzzzzzzzzzzzzzzze.......2005-07-28
This Book was a big disappointment. The narrative and narrator were uninspired. It was geared to a third grade level and probably wouldn't have held a nine year olds attention long.
Fascinating & Captivating!.......2005-07-06
Wonderfully written, this book holds the reader's attention from beginning to end. This book is not only for history buffs, but for anyone who wants a fascinating glimpse of the lives of our founding fathers. Written in the form of short biographies, it makes it easy to put down and pick up again without having to re-read the previous chapter. The timeline in the end also makes it easy to put all of the events into perspective. This will be required reading for my own homeschool children, and should be required for all young adults.
Wonderfully done!.......2004-09-29
Mr. Allen has put together a magnificent work here. The book features 6 subjects: Benjamin Franklin, George Washington, John Adams, Patrick Henry, Thomas Jefferson and James Madison. Each biography is in the 35 - 40 page range and goes a little deeper than a basic work. Mr. Allen gives the reader the basic information and hits the highlights, but also delves into personal nuances and incidents of each subject.
Each chapter is informative and enjoyable, but Mr. Allen's admiration for Thomas Jefferson shows through. I cannot fault him for that. If I were to commit to such an endeavor, it would surely be slanted toward the greatness of Patrick Henry. I suppose it is most difficult to undertake such a challenge without allowing a certain amount of personal bias to show through.
The final 75 or so pages are filler material that, unlike most filler material, is quite interesting and useful. There is a wonderfully compiled timeline of the lives and major events of the subjects. The book is completed with a wonderful appendix which contains a section where the author debunks some of the myths propagated though the years about some of our founders. Readers wishing to learn more about the founders are sure to find many titles to add to their reading list from the author's endnotes and bibliography.
You will enjoy this unique book and its many anecdotes not often told about these founders. This book would be a tremendous asset for any home-school program.

Outstanding!.......2003-03-28
At last a book that masterfully brings our Founding Fathers to life! Steve Allen has captured both the awe-inspiring and shocking facts about these men and put them into one easy-to-read literary work. I was surprised to discover the daily "air-baths" of Benjamin Franklin, together with his rascally ways of getting the closest seat near the fire. I was also touched by Franklin's resolutions to become a better person. The vision of George Washington to win his battles is unparalled. And I never knew that Patrick Henry had 17 children! A wonderful book!

The Way It Was: Nonfiction, But Still A Fantasy........2006-09-23
This is the way Huey Long wanted to be remembered. During the Depression, he did make promises to the poor, hungry residents of the state of Louisiana to have food on their tables and money to buy necessities. After his election as Governor, he was the original crooked politician who reneged on his promises. With aspirations to the Presidency of the United States, he had the state capital torn down and replaced with a replica of the White House in Washington, D.C. Such bright hopes and dreaming of a person who wanted to be our first American King.
It would have been better to have a movie about the real Huey Long; instead, we have been presented two about the fictional Willie Stark as portrayed by Robert Penn Warren, in 1949 and in 2006:
Based on Robert Penn Warren's novel, it is peopled with colorful, rambunctious (must have had high testosterone), shady characters. Mainly it was two stories in one. Willie Stark was crass and prented he liked orange "pop" (I doubt they called it that in 1930 Louisiana, as it's a Northern term -- we called it "dope"), that his "little lady" wife didn't favor liquor. Neither do I. Sean Penn was the opposite of Broaderick Crawford who was the star of the 1949 movie of the same name; he made Willie out to be a vulgar, old man who could have been a "Holiness" preacher, and Huey was only 42 when he died. Instead, he turned to the devil and was a master of dirty politics with his retribution to the men who were using him, where he relished his liquor after winning the election and "moving on" to Sadie Burk, a coffee drinker, eventually a woman scorned.
Willie was more like Billy Sunday, orating at the county Fair, pretty big for the Depression years, where I expected to find Mark the hypnotist from Vegas. It looked like a Billy Graham rally. The less said about the Willie character (too much negative was shown as his love for burlesque and the New Orleans' "Carmen", then corrupted the society girl Ann, dressed in a "cherry" dress like mine in 1951 for Christine's funeral), it was draining to watch the political maneuverings and posturing.
Jack, played by Jude Law, tried to sound like New Orleans' native Harry Connick, Jr., looked like a Southern Adonis. Men in the 1920s and '30s would not be glamorous, though he did try to parody a good investigative reporter like a Jack I know, also a Jack of Clubs (from a deck of cards). He was used to destroy his own father, brother and sister with the help of an alcoholic mother. She looked as artificial as the gardenia on her outfit out in the swamps at the old mansion owned by the judge. The live oaks with the moss hanging were just plain spooky. Tony Hopkins made a good retired, refined judge and I imagined a thinner Charles Southcott with Tony's hair. Could be wrong.
We reap what we sow. Nothing will ever be the same again. Who needs love anyway? They were all frustrated men with "attitude." I can't leave out Bill Lyons, the little man who served as chauffeur, bodyguard, henchman for Willie. He was the most corrupt of all and, in the end, corruption caught up with them all when he killed his boss and Alan. Before things were set in concrete, we saw Alan as portrayed by Mark Ruffalo (a modern James Darren) who was set up to take the fall. He was effective as the intellectual failure.
The main character was overacted by Sean Penn who turned him into a raving, depraved lunatic begging to be killed. He was profane. The length and substance of this movie was draining and left one feeling empty. No Oscar for this one!
Let History Decide.......2003-10-15
This fascinating piece of work 'written' by Huey P. Long during the height of his reign was intended to promote his 'legend and legacy', toward the goal of becoming President of the United States in 1936. However, it is best understood from the perspective of modern times.
Huey P. Long has forever been portrayed as the personification of all that is evil in American Politics. American school children outside the State of Louisiana have been taught that Long, if left unchecked, would have destroyed American Democracy as we know it and replaced it with the most corrupt Dictatorship imaginable.
Indeed, History has given Long a 'bad rap'. 'Every Man a King' is Huey Long's side of the story. Calling himself the 'friend of the working man', Long's brief but turbulent rise through American politics is unmatched by anyone in the 20th century. He was the Establishment's worst nightmare- a true Populist who really 're-distributed the wealth'. He took on the task of taxing the rich oil companies and other business interests in Louisiana and used the money to build roads, schools, and hospitals. His accomplishments are indisputable, and the moneyed interests absolutely hated him. His own abrasive and sometimes buffoon-like personality only fueled the fire for his enemies. But make no mistake about it, Long was a brilliant man and an extremely savvy politician who posed a serious threat to the status quo.
Long has been dead nearly 70 years, yet his detractors still vehemently accuse him of 'robbing the people blind' during his reign. I say 'let history be the judge'. As late as the 1980's, most of the existing paved roads, schools, and hospitals in Louisiana were built during the Long administration.
After his election to the U.S. Senate, Long became a national figure and a serious contender for the 1936 Presidential nomination. His constituents were America's poor and working class, and his Socialist ideas hit a chord with many Americans during those depression-era times. There's no question that most of Roosevelt's 'New Deal' program was a (successful) attempt to 'steal Huey Long's thunder'.
Forget everything you've ever been taught about Huey Long and buy this book. There are two sides to every story, but history has only told us one side of the enigma that was Huey Long. This book will tell the other side. Read it and let history and your conscience decide whether Long was a sinner or a savior.
It was pretty good.......1999-09-12
This book is clearly a political move made by Huey Long when he was aiming for the presidency. I found it interesting to discover about his life, and how he tried to show that he was just like everybody else.
Customer Reviews:
Very interesting read........2003-10-14
I don't read much. I found this book on this site, read the reviews, decided to order it and give it a chance. Of all the books i have read, this is the most interesting and funniest books.
After showing a few funny parts to my friends, they all said i have a sick humour. One part reading about a guy who tried to kill him self by jumping off a building but fails. The way it was written was soo funny. Anyway, there are many many more interesting/funny parts.
After i read it i came online to buy Wags first book, but because it is no where to be found, i haven't been able to get it yet. However i have bought 2 other books similar this 'My Life in the NYPD."
Very enjoyable read.
Wags delivers the goods - - NYPD the real way!.......2002-08-26
Jimmy does it again! This book deals with his years in the NYPD, and goes right up to the start of his PI career (the first book). As before he delivers the goods retelling his most amazing and dazzling stories of life and crime in New York in a personal and well written way. The book also deals with the person behind the badge, the associates, the friends, the family, and not the least the importance of not letting the job get to you. Starting out in the 60's to the early 90's the way cops work has changed tremendously and Wags takes you on that ride!!! Recommended read.
The best non-fiction NYPD Book I've ever read.......2002-06-05
I picked this book up in of all places an Eckards drugstore and expected something that would keep my interest yet not be very memorable. Instead what i got was one of the finest books I have ever read period. The reason this book works so well is because Wags has no ego. No stories are present in a way to make him a hero and honesty rings throughout the entire book. The other reviewers have already mentioned the layout of the book so I will only say that this book contains stories you will never forget. I work in NYC and it is extremely interesting to read about the City in to 70s and 80s when it was cesspool..it really makes one appreciate Guliani and the miracle he performed. If I had to draw a parallel to this book, I would compare it to the best of Wambaugh. Wags write about so many fascinating characters that each chapter is like a mini book unto itself. Very importantly, Wags finishes each story with an update on the individual and or event, so you are not left wondering what happened. All in all, the finest police writing I have ever read.
Authentic, fast paced and action packed.......2002-03-27
James Wagner, nicknamed "Jimmy the Wags" is a retired New York City street cop who, with the help of writer Patrick Picciarelli, also a retired cop, describes his police experiences in the Lower East Side of Manhattan in the 60s, 70s and 80s. It's an authentic voice that rings with the cadence of the city and the job he worked day after day, dealing with the dregs of society and everyday crime, as well as some of the major social issues of the time.
We first meet Jimmy as a nine-year old boy, listening to Dragnet with his police officer father in their Staten Island home. We follow him through the police academy and then out to the streets. We meet his fellow cops and feel the pressures of the job, watching some of them turn into alcoholics or commit suicide. We see how many of the rules are bent to accommodate the reality of what is going on in the street. We're right alongside Jimmy, feeling his anger and despair when he goes to funeral services for fellow cops brutally gunned down. We meet celebrities and junkies and Hell's Angels and other assorted oddball characters. We're surprised at some stories, and we cringe at others and wonder how one man could have experienced so many outrageous things. Then we realize that these are the highlights of a long career, all compressed into a fast paced, action packed narrative with something new on every page. It's a good story, well told. Recommended.
the ring of truth.......2002-03-19
This second book by the 'Wags' is a thrilling ride through the streets of lower Manhatten with the siren going full blast. Written in a no-nonsense style, here is a book about New York that you can really get your teeth into. If you know NYC, then you know that there is little, if any, exaggeration. Truth is indeed stranger than fiction, and every one of the weird situations and perverted personalities has the ring of truth. What a great adventure it was for me, who was a teenager on the streets of New York, to read what was really going on behind the scenes, the stories you never got to read. This isn't just a book about brutality in the streets. Wagner is a cop with a heart, and had a passion for his job. Although the tone is often nostalgic, it is never overly sentimental or mawkish. Here is a beautiful kaleidoscope of the city in all its rawness. Read it and see!
