        Book Description

Work and Integrity is a timely resource that examines the crisis as well as the promise of professionalism in contemporary society. This vital book argues for the importance of a new civic professionalism that reflects the ideals of democracy and public service in our ever more complex economic environment. A publication of The Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching, Work and Integrity explores the most current thinking on the various (and often conflicting) ways in which the concept of professional work is understood. Using examples from the United States and Europe, the author describes how the professions evolved from a limited kind of genteel occupation into one of the most widely emulated and sought-after models of work. The book also explores the rise of complex institutions of industrial and postindustrial society, especially the university and the bureaucratic structures of business, government, health care, and education.

          Book Description

It is a well-known fact that conventional commercial banks provide financial intermediation services on the basis of interest rates on assets and liabilities. However, since interest is prohibited in Islam, Islamic banks have developed several other modes through which savings are mobilized and passed on to entrepreneurs, none of which involve interest.

Islamic Banking and Finance discusses Islamic financial theory and practice, and focuses on the opportunities offered by Islamic finance as an alternative method of financial intermediation. Key features of profit-sharing (as opposed to debt-based) contracts are highlighted, and the ways in which they can facilitate improved efficiency and stability of a financial system are explored.

The authors illustrate that in addition to some 200 Islamic banks operating in Muslim as well as non-Muslim countries, some of the biggest multinational banks are now offering Islamic financial products.

This book will fascinate students, researchers and academics with a special interest in comparative banking, middle-eastern studies and international finance, and will also appeal to practitioners of banking and finance.

            Book Description

Transfer pricing is a dynamic and multidimensional topic that has captured the attention of academicians, corporate executives, and tax authorities for many decades. The issues of transfer pricing are very complex and the stakes are extremely high because more than 40 percent of international trade is trade between related entities. This book examines many important tax and management issues related to transfer pricing. These issues include new transfer pricing regulations and their implications, the selection of proper transfer pricing methods, major environmental variables, and issues concerning the administration of a transfer pricing system. The author also presents many interesting findings from a recent study on U.S. transfer pricing practices. The author begins by describing the nature of intrafirm transactions in a corporate environment and the significance of intrafirm transactions in international trade. Recent changes and major transfer pricing legislation and regulations in the United States are explained. New transfer pricing regulations in Canada, Japan, South Korea, and the European Community and their implications are also discussed. These are followed by a presentation on research methodology and profile of 143 respondent firms. The author then explains the findings on transfer pricing methods and environmental variables of international transfer pricing. Current transfer pricing practices are compared with those of an earlier study done in 1977. Other issues such as system objectives, resolution of policy conflicts, and policies on outside purchases are covered by this monograph. General conclusions from this research and suggestions for further research are also provided.

            Book Description

As business and capital markets have continue to grow more global over recent years, the need for cross-border financial information has correspondingly increased. This has brought international accounting to the forefront. International Accounting: A User Perspective is designed to provide an understanding of international accounting issues to current and future business managers. The book takes a user perspective to international financial reporting because most business executives are more likely to be users of financial information that crosses national borders than users of it. With the recent problems exposed in the quality of financial reporting in many countries, a solid understanding of international accounting issues is an important part of the portfolio of skills that managers in medium and large enterprises must possess.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent and clearly written.......2006-05-28

Saudagaran's text (2nd edition) is an excellent overview of international accounting today. It's simply and logically organized, well-written, and sophisticated enough, without bombarding the reader with endless detail.

            It's worth every penny.

            5 out of 5 stars Oustanding material!.......2001-06-14

International Accounting by S. Saudagaran is an outstanding material on the vital aspects of International Accouting. While easy to read, it is also thought-provoking and idea-inspiring. While comprehensible, it is also comprehensive. These combinations are hard to find in Accounting texts and endear this book to its many users.

The world is fast becoming a global village and in this wake of globalization, it is pertinent to understand the inherent diversities in financial reporting and its implications on business. This was well handled in the text. The chapters on the diverse roles of Accounting in different countries, diversity in financial reporting, globabal harmonisation and its various dimensions, a thorough discussion on related accounting standards and the environemtal implications are extremely helpful

I will highly recommend this book to students of Accounting and any other individual who wants a thorough synopis of accounting in the global village.

3 out of 5 stars Price vs. Quality.......2002-03-07

Overall, I found the book pricey given the quality... The layout is also not as user friendly as other textbooks in the field. For every topic it does give an example, but does not always clearly outline the steps obtained to achieve the displayed solution. Not to mention the fact that there is almost one error in every larger example.

              Book Description

Accounting and the role of Accountants has permeated the modern societies. For the most part we have accepted the impartiality and objectivity of accounting and not recognized how accounting systems are embedded in a country's economic and legal framework, much of which is in turn shaped by political processes. This web of interactions results in complex economic and political questions which require accounting researchers to focus on several related trends: information economics, regulatory economics, sociology, and political science. Although considerable progress has been made in the field of accounting, many fundamental questions are still subject to debate. In this book leading international scholars address a number of important questions: DT What is the role of accounting in security valuation, decision making and contracting? DT What can we learn from economics-based research in accounting? DT What is the role of auditing and how can accounting standards be enforced? DT What are the cost and benefits of accounting and disclosure regulation? DT What is the role of accounting in society? DT How does lobbying affect the political process of standard setting? DT What are the consequences of the internationalization of standard setting? This seminal book will be of interest to academics, researchers, and graduate students of Accounting, Finance, Business Studies, Sociology, and Political Economy.

                Book Description

Accounting: An International Perspective, 5e was written for two primary markets; upper level accounting and MBA Accounting. The Gernon-Meek text could be used in an advanced accounting course where the international coverage in the main text is either weak or out of date; in a topics seminar where international accounting is being covered in 3 or 4 weeks; and in an international accounting course where the focus is on cases and the instructor wants a brief text to be used as a reference. At the MBA level Gernon-Meek will fit nicely into an eight-week international accounting course or any MBA course where the professor wants more current international coverage. This paper bound text is designed to supplement upper level and MBA accounting texts with additional mini-cases and readings covering international accounting concepts. The book provides a general, non-technical overview of international accounting and covers both financial and managerial accounting topics. Recognizing that this is a supplemental text, the authors have re-organized the fifth edition by decreasing the length from 12 chapters to 10 chapters.

                      Book Description

Pulling together a group of Cameroon experts and Africanists, this book is a critical, comprehensive assessment of post-colonial Cameroon's struggle at nation-building, governance, democracy and economic development in a multiethnic state and society in which even non-political issues (e.g., football or soccer and popular music) are politicized.

                      Book Description

The American Red Cross received $128,000 in direct donations.

                      Greenpeace International's donations average $3,000 a week.

The World Wildlife Fund is getting over 100 donations a month.

                      All online.

Many nonprofits, intent on maximizing their donor base, have added the Internet to their roster of traditional solicitation vehicles, transforming it into an engaging, effective tool for getting out their messages. In addition to boosting visibility, Web sites offer a cornucopia of creative possibilities—from free coupon giveaways to tie-ins with on-air radio pledge drives to celebrity artwork auctions or online lotteries. In addition to the online convenience of e-mail membership and automated credit card donations, online solicitations can sometimes result in higher donations than "real world" donations.

This practical, nontechnical guide to fundraising on the Internet, written by an Internet veteran who's designed scores of successful money-making sites, describes not only how to set up an attention getting Web site, but also how to make a Web site as well as any credit card transaction entirely secure. The Fund Raiser's Guide to the Internet takes the novice Web site creator from the basics of writing on the electronic tablet to tips on creating an effective reply device, complete with information on designing a premium gift array, made with exhilarating graphics. Examples of innovative sites for such world-class nonprofits as the Rainforest Action Network, the World Wildlife Fund USA, and Greenpeace Canada illustrate the sites' role in overall fundraising campaigns. Complete with a Web site scratchpad for designing a mock-up Web page, a checklist of "musts" for fundraising sites at the end of every chapter, and a disk with over 100 sites referenced in the book, The Fund Raiser's Guide offers site-tested advice on how to actually craft and perfect a Web site that turns a site visitor into a committed donor.

                      Book Description

In this definitive biography of Ernest Tubb, Ronnie Pugh brings one of country music’s greatest performers back to center stage. Tracing a career that began in the 1930s and continued until just a few years before Tubb’s death in 1984, Pugh presents not only the long and legendary life of the Texas Troubadour but also an unparalleled view of the world of country music in which Ernest Tubb played an essential part.
Tubb began his career as an imitator of Jimmie Rodgers, but stormed the country music scene in the 1940s with a new honky tonk sound and a string of hits that included “Walking the Floor Over You.” His innovations marked an important transition in country music to a style and lyric in tune with modern American working people, or at least that offered the real-life themes of hard drinking, divorce, tough times, and ruined lives—changes that helped define the music we recognize today as “country.” A member of the Grand Ole Opry until 1982, Tubb hosted a live radio broadcast from the Ernest Tubb Record Shop in Nashville for years and became one of the first country music stars to host his own television show in the mid-1960s. Always popular and on the road much of the time even after his prime hit-making years had ended, he was well-known for promoting the careers of many new performers on the rise.
Delving into fan club journals, songbooks, newspaper broadcast logs, record company files, and hundreds of interviews, Ronnie Pugh draws a picture of Tubb—exploring both his personal and professional life—that is unprecedented in its intimacy, detail, and vitality. We get a close-up view of Tubb riding the crest of his popularity, setting the pace for Nashville, facing the onslaught of Elvis Presley and rock ’n roll, and surviving as a country music legend. Richly illustrated with almost a hundred photographs, many of which are rare unpublished shots from private collections, Ernest Tubb also contains a detailed and complete sessionography, a resource that will be of continuing importance for serious record collectors.
A biography that has been long awaited from Ronnie Pugh, unquestionably the leading authority on Ernest Tubb, this book will delight readers from among the fans of country music, those interested in the history of country music or American popular music and culture generally, and, of course, Ernest Tubb fans.

5 out of 5 stars Great biography of a Country music giant.......2003-05-11

Ronnie Pugh has done an excellent job of describing a Country music legend. He told many of the ways that Ernest Tubb helped the Country music industry, and gave what I think is a fair and accurate account of the man himself. This book is a must for any Ernest Tubb fan, and for anyone who wants to learn more about this great artist and great man. I highly recommend this book.

4 out of 5 stars Good research and balance.......2002-06-11

This book provides an excellent picture of Ernest Tubb. It's filled with detail about his life and his importance to the music industry, and it's an objective and balanced biography. The only thing I found odd was the lack of family interviews. I don't know how one can write a complete biography without talking to surviving family members.

3 out of 5 stars Kind of depressing, but informative.......2001-08-10

An exhaustively detailed biography, written by the head of the Country Music Foundation, which tracks ET from his early struggling years, onto his heyday as one of Decca's main cash cows, and through his decades of hard work and gradual decline. The writing is almost as dogged and linear as Tubb was during his years on the road -- not terribly elegant, literary or evocative, but the research is solid, including countless interviews with band members, industry movers, and Tubb relations. An authoritative resource for anyone who would like to find out how Tubb helped form the sound of hard country honkytonk in the early '40s, and how he later helped boost the careers of musicians such as Hank Snow, Hank Thompson and Loretta Lynn, and how Nashville eventually let him slide out of sight. Many of the details seems too depressing and tawdry to me, but it's still the story of a great man's life...

5 out of 5 stars Unbiased and well balanced....two thumbs up.......1998-08-23

Mr. Pugh's "Ernest Tubb: The Texas Troubador" offers a well balanced context of Tubb's life. The good times, hard times, his strengths, and weaknesses. My father, the late Vernon "Toby" Reese was one of the orignal members of Tubb's band in the 40's. I can recall his stories about Tubb when I was a child. Mr. Pughs book is right on target.

5 out of 5 stars This Is The ultimate book on The Great Ernest Tubb.......1997-12-03

I have personally known the Tubb family and most of this I already knew so it was fun seeing what would be in the book and what would be left out and he left nothing out of the book. It gave you a very honet portait of this legendary man. It did not give a sugar coated picture. It was very informative and honest. Although I never got to meet the man just knowing what I know of him and his family. I'am sure that he would be proud of this book.

5 out of 5 stars A simply fascinating window into one woman's life.......2002-07-12

Deftly written with the assistance of Barbara C. Johnson (Assistant Professor of Anthropology, Ithaca College), Ruby Of Cochin: An Indian Jewish Woman Remembers is the personal memoir of Ruby Daniel, a Jewish woman born in the East Indian community of Cochin in 1912 and educated at a convent school, and then attending St. Theresa's College. In World War II she served as a member of the Women's Royal Indian Navy, and subsequently immigrated to Israel in 1951, and currently resides on an Israeli kibbutz. Ruby Of Cochin is a rich and engaging autobiographical story enhanced with historical legends, folk tales, and women's songs in the local language of Malayalam. Highly recommended reading, Ruby Of Cochin is a simply fascinating window into one woman's life in East India.

5 out of 5 stars Ruby of Cochin is a must-read on the Jews of India.......2000-11-06

It seems that even before the destruction of the second temple, Jews were trading and settling in southwest India. If you look on a world map, you'll see it was because India and Israel are not really that far away from each other by sea. It turns out that India was good for the Jews. Because of the region's tolerance for ethnic diversity--the Indians saw Jews as just another cast--a Jewish community flourished in Cochin for thousands of years, without prejudice or pogroms. Women had much more equality within the Cochin Jewish community than they have had elsewhere. Anthropologist Barbara Johnson first met Ruby Daniel, one of the outspoken members of that community, when she visited Cochin in the 60s and formed a deep friendship that continues today, although Ruby, now in her 80s, has immigrated to Israel with most of the community (even the synagogue was transported, thanks to wealthy American benefactors, and is now on display in the Jewish Museum). The book is told in Ruby's marvelous voice and is a fascinating tale. I gave it to my mom as a gift and she loved it.
