5 out of 5 stars E-marketing as it should be.......2005-01-06

I really enjoyed this book and benefited a lot from its excellent content as it was easy to follow and presented E-marketing as it should really be: more MARKETING and less E, or less Technical Mumbo Jumbo.
Being an IT Business consultant, I highly recommend this book to anyone in the IT Business especially technical people who need to bridge their gap between Technology and Business knowledge.

Cheers.

5 out of 5 stars E-Marketing is Engaging and Helpful.......2001-02-22

This terrific new book from two of the world's best-known and respected marketers - Stan Rapp and Chuck Martin - contains a powerful surprise for the reader. The title suggests that it might be about the authors' special take on e-marketing -- it turns out to be that, and much more.

The authors actually tackle a full range of enterprise issues from integrating IT and marketing functions to strategic partnerships to email marketing. Their points are substantiated with dozens of examples and numerous case studies. The effect is a convincing and eye-opening presentation of the extent to which marketing does, and should, pervade every aspect of business today.

The thread that that pulls the authors' observations together is the customer-centric philosophy pioneered by co-author Stan Rapp in his and Tom Collin's book, "MaxiMarketing," published in 1986. The result is a well-organized unfolding of ideas and solutions that help the reader understand how new technologies, such as the wireless Internet, might be used to build customer relationships while simultaneously improving a firm's operating efficiency.

Obviously, the authors are high-level thinkers. Many of their ideas stimulated new ideas for my own business, which is the whole point of a book like this. For example, their discussion of how to turn products into "offerings" by surrounding them with value-added services was especially interesting and helpful.

Perhaps the greatest value of the book is that its seven "imperatives" provide the basis for a sound strategic direction. Follow them and there's little doubt the book will live up to its promise of "dominating" the competition. That's especially helpful these days when change is so rapid and so much is new and untested.

Read this book and be prepared for some very powerful ideas and new directions not just for marketing, but for the entire business.

Commit the Seven Imperatives to memory, but not as a mere mantra. This an essential tool bag ready to go to work. 'Max-e-Marketing in the Net Future: The Seven Imperatives for Outsmarting the Competition in the Net Economy' are seven elegantly crafted and clarifying doses of excellent advice that will de-fuzz the out-of-focus business models of many dot.coms, and for that matter, help any company struggling to straddle and merge the old ways of doing business with e-business. Concise examples from over 200 companies from American Express to zoho.com are cited and explained. Real-world case studies and real-world top executives exclusively interviewed, coupled with Martin and Rapp's own considerable depth and breadth of experience, make this juicy reading. Their perspective is bulls-eye. Once begun, I didn't put it down. Using Martin and Rapp's premises for avoiding pitfalls and grasping opportunities, our dot-com has redefined and refined our own business model so completely that we now have a clear path to profitability. We even take the author's message to the Fortune companies we now call on. 'Max-e-marketing In The Net Future' is all about really getting really real.

Max-E Marketing is a book that I read in an evening, put to work in a day, and will be absorbing for some time to come while evaluating and implementing the seven imperatives in my own business environment. I found the pairing of co-authors Stan Rapp and Chuck Martin to be a master stroke. The combined power of their marketing savvy, e-business vision, and journalistic discipline yields a clarity of thought and usefulness of principle that should help any business executive who is determined to outsmart the competition in the Net Economy. But what really sets this book apart is the rich mix of real-world examples. They represent a range of companies and industries so broad that every reader will find a way to relate to every major point. The seven imperatives each reflect straightforward click-and-mortar business strategy, yet they are presented here as marketing strategy. Lest a reader miss the point of that, the authors deliver the message one more time in imperative number seven: "Make business responsible for marketing and marketing responsible for business."

    Book Description

The capitalist economic system now dominates the world. How fully can it take justice into account? John Isbister takes a practical approach to the most important questions of economic and social justice such as: how big a spread of incomes from rich to poor is consistent with social justice? Should inheritances be abolished? What sort of commitment should a rich country like the USA make to foreign aid?

Isbister challenges us to think creatively about the meaning of justice and how it works towards social and economic fairness within the boundaries of capitalism. Students of political economy, ethics, public policy and current affairs as well as motivated citizens who believe there is a need to create a fairer world, will find this book a radical and compelling call to action.

5 out of 5 stars An excellent piece of work........2006-04-18

John Isbister hits the nail head-on in his text "Capitalism and Justice: Envisioning Social and Economic Fairness," with the example he gives immediately at the start of chapter one:

"The little red hen finds some grains of wheat in the farmyard. She asks the other animals-the cat, the rat, and the pig-who would like to help her plant the grains, the reap the harvest, then carry the wheat to the mill for grinding into flour, and then bake the flour into bread. `Not I,' says each of the animals, each time it is asked. Finally, when the bread is baked, the little red hen asks who would like to help her eat it, and the cat, the rat, and the pig all volunteer. The little red hen declines their help and eats the bread herself."

    1 out of 5 stars Banal.......2002-03-17

I would like to say that this book is as bad as it gets, but I've learned that such optimism is rarely justified. I can say no more, then, than that Capitalism and Justice is the most flagrant example of economic casuistry that I've run across to date.

The general, and supportable, thesis is that moral considerations require a certain amount of intervention in the economy and our personal lives in order to correct the amoral influence of free markets. Nothing that you won't find in cocktail party conversations anywhere within fifty miles of an ocean. This book does not do a very good job of the demonstration.

A synopsis of Isbister's discussion of equality should do to show exactly how vapid his arguments are. After examining some justifications for equality as a moral postulate (including Rawls), he denies that any are viable. Since he wants to base his analysis of justice (particularly income inequality) on equality, freedom, and efficiency, obviously he needs to give us a reason why we should. Citing the Declaration of Independence, he decides that he can simply assume equality is good, and go on from there.

Now, he has to decide which sort of equality to use, and so sets up a false dichotomy: should it be equality of opportunity or equality of outcome? The most obvious third choice (equality under the law) is discussed later in a different context (freedom), but what he does with these two is hilarious. He looks at what he wants to call fair, and stipulates that someone who works harder should receive more; therefore he eschews the later equality and prefers the former, which are obviously contradictory in this context. However, he notes, that if outcomes are different for one generation, then opportunities are different for the next; therefore the one implies the other. Rather than note that this is a real problem to which a real solution is needed (such as only using equality of outcomes), he just calls this an "indeterminacy" and decides to apply both principles to income distributions.

How does he do this? He decides that having a 1:1, or equal, distribution of incomes is neither possible nor good, so there must be a larger one. What is it? 8:1; specifically, $20,000 to $160,000. Why? "This is the roughest and most intuitive of conclusions." He guessed. The distribution should also be Gaussian, he says, even though he admits that supervisors should usually be paid more than their subordinates, which would normally imply something closer to a gamma distribution.
About seventy percent of us already fall into the category given (including children under eighteen, college students and retired people and not including all redistributive programs). Why we should put any effort into modifying the income distribution is not given.

His account of freedom is similarly insipid (using the kind of analysis of liberty that the Soviets used as a rationalization), and his criticisms of Nozick are inept. He tells us that it is not just for us to willingly give a quarter to Wilt Chamberlain to see him play, or at least for him to keep the money, because part of the reason he was so good is that he's so much taller than we.

Isbister also looks at the nature of capitalism, globalization, and the environment with just as much insight.

I wonder whom this book was meant for. It is certainly not a scholarly tome, nor is it introductory. Nowhere does it look like a book meant for history. It's really just the sort of thing that Isbister probably talks about once the vodka martinis start flowing out of the mouths of fountains camouflaged as busts of Marx at the college library; it's a book meant to show his friends how dedicated he is to the cause.

If you're considering this book, I'd suggest leafing through it at the library before buying it to make sure it's your cup of tea.

1 out of 5 stars Definitely not worth the [money].......2002-05-08

The Jossey-Bass series has a good reputation, as does Kent Dove. But this book is a huge disappointment. It is billed as an indispensable aid for practitioners and a textbook for students, but it serves neither set of readers well. Practitioners looking for solid advice and good examples to illustrate principles in action find nothing of the sort. And pity the poor student who has to slog through this to pass a course. This is an uninspiring, tendentious, tedious exercise in making the elegantly simple art of fundraising appear to be some arcane mystery that only the likes of a long-time practitioner like Kent Dove can master.

Most people are intimidated enough about asking for money, they don't need to be scared/shamed out of the field by reading this kind of mumbo jumbo that makes them feel stupid or inadequate.

The book has a few good tables and nuggets of useful information, but not enough to justify a [money] price tag. I'm glad I borrowed this from the library to preview it before buying -- it saved me the effort of returning it.

                    Book Description

1943: Polish underground fighter John Wiernicki is captured and beaten by the Gestapo, then shipped to Auschwitz. In this chilling memoir, John Wiernicki, a Gentile, details "life" in the infamous death camp and his battle to survive, physically and morally, in the face of utter evil. He begins by remembering his aristocratic youth, an idyllic time shattered by German invasion. The ensuing dark days of occupation would fire the adolescent Wiernicki with a burning desire to serve Poland, a cause that led him to valiant action and eventual arrest.

As a young non-Jew, Wiernicki was acutely sensitive to the depravity and injustice that engulfed him at Auschwitz. He bears witness to the harrowing selection and extermination of Jews doomed by birth to the gas chambers, to savage camp policies, brutal SS doctors, and rampant corruption within the system. He notes the difference in treatment between Jews and non-Jews. And he relives fearful unexpected encounters with two notorious "Angels of Death": Josef Mengele and Heinz Thilo.

After his transfer from Buchenwald to Ohrdruf, Wiernicki recounts events, which rarely have been recorded and which took place in the infamous Sonder Camp III, where prisoners in appalling working conditions worked on the construction of the underground shelter for Hitler's Headquarters train and Wehrmacht Communication Center in Jonastal Valley.

War in the Shadow of Auschwitz is an important historical and personal document. Its vivid portrait of prewar and wartime Poland, and of German concentration camps, provides a significant addition to the growing body of testimony by gentile survivors and a heartfelt contribution to fostering comprehension and understanding.

5 out of 5 stars The horrors of being incarcerated in Auschwitz.......2002-03-17

A non-Jew, author John Wiernicki was a Polish partisan and political prisoner who vividly recalls his experienced during World War II and the horrors of being incarcerated in the Auschwitz concentration camp. It was in 1943 that Wernicke as a Polish underground fighter was captured and beaten by the Gestapo, then shipped to Auschwitz. A Gentile, Wernicke's chilling memoir graphically details "life" in that infamous death camp, along with his personal battle to survive both physically and morally in the face of the utter evil that was the Nazi "Final Solution" for its enemies. Especially in the face of current efforts at anti-Semitic revisionism, War In The Shadow Of Auschwitz is a critically important and welcome contribution to the growing library of Holocaust Studies, as well as being recommended for World War II European theater reading lists and reference collections.

                                  Book Description

Training in government is not a primary mission for a variety of reasons, and this book attempts to increase the importance of training in government organizations by showing how training can increase individual performance and overall productivity. Sims challenges recent commission findings that excellence in training government workers is not a priority and offers a framework to better centrally manage governing training efforts. Sims has designed the book to help government organizations (federal, state, county and local) demonstrate the value added of efficient and effective training programs. In addition, the book offers a helpful discussion on the differences between private and public sector organizations and the training issues germane to each sector (for example, the availability of financial resources alloted for training in the private sector far outweigh those in the public arena). He concludes is that if training is functioning in government, then it is contributing to the activities of the organization in a number of different ways (for example, improving performance through the application of what has been learned).

                                          Product Description

This book is a meticulously researched family history on the German-Jewish experience in the rural area of southwestern Germany, an area traditionally known as the Kraichgau, in what was once the principality of Baden, now a part of the State of Baden-W??rttemberg. It is an account of Landjuden (small-town Jews) whose livelihood as horse, cattle, and feed brokers depended upon the needs of the surrounding gentile farming communities. Their life as Schutzjuden (protected Jews) is recorded from the period of the Thirty Years' War to their achieving emancipation in the early 19th century, and shown as loyal subjects of imperial Germany in the latter part of the 19th and early 20th century. The impact of Nazism on this family is revealed through the life experience of the author including his immediate family's immigration to the U.S. in 1937, and the ultimate fate of his closest relatives on Kristallnacht and subsequent deportations to the death camps beginning in 1940. Archival records, family photographs and documents provide the basis for the story told in this book. Included is a CD-ROM in GEDCOM format containing information about more than 30,000 individuals.
