            1 out of 5 stars OMG!.......2007-10-16

This is the worst textbook, ever. I wish my University had the good sense to dump this piece of garbage. It is dry, poorly written, and constructed like garbage. For over 60 dollars for a paperback you would expect a lot more.

1 out of 5 stars The worst accounting book I've read to date!.......2005-09-21

This is the first textbook that I haven't been able to read through all the assigned chapters. That's saying a lot since I already have one degree and working on a second.

Wow! The text is extremely dry! No book should have 6 or 7 bolded terms in a row and not bother to explain the terms. Also it makes no distinction between some terms. For instance, appropriations vs. emcumbrance vs. expenditure. I had to figure that out on my own.

As someone else said, this is NOT a self-study book! Granted no accounting book should baby you, but if nobody in the class understands what the hell the book is saying, then there's something wrong. If you're using the book for a class and want to use the PowerPoint slides on the publisher's website, don't bother! They're just as bad as the textbook. They don't have a logical flow to them. They don't even flow with the book. What is at the beginning of a chapter in the book may be at the end of the PowerPoint slides for that chapter. There are big chunks of the chapters missing from the slides.

I can't believe this is the 7th edition of this book! It's written like it was the first edition. The author has no concept of how people study. McGraw-Hill should have stopped publishing this horrendous book after the first edition.

            1 out of 5 stars YIKES!!!.......2005-06-24

I was "lucky" enough to take a governmental accounting course in which this alleged text was the book for the class. It was universally scorned, and at least the school had the good sense to dump it in time for the following semester.

It's so dry that I have a hard time believing it wasn't written in the 1950's, when dry textbooks were the rule of the day. The layout is drabbed and the font is very cramped. It's surprising how cramped type and very little space between lines actually makes reading so much more difficult. You really sense the book was created on a low budget (even though it's WAY overpriced!).

The subject matter, at least for most people, is a bit uninspring anyway, and this text does NOTHING to allay those prejudices. Accounting books are rarely "fun" but they can be presented in a way that's visually interesting, with some real life case studies or examples. Nothing from real life makes its way into this book.

And on top of everything else, the ink is so cheap that it smears if you hold your finger in one place too long, oh, like when you're holding it open to read. So both the content AND the construction are C**P!!!

            Avoid!!!

            1 out of 5 stars Frustration.......2003-06-22

This is a truly horrible book. It's written so poorly that the only way it can be used is as a look-up reference. If you don't have a really good instructor for Not-for-profit accounting, find one using a different book. You won't get much out of this.
The 7th Edition is just as bad as the 6th.

1 out of 5 stars Worst Text I ever had to read.......2002-10-29

If it was possible to give this book a negetive star review I would. It has no organization, no structure, and makes no sense. It is by far the worst text I have ever had to read. Although the author is a professor, he must be a very bad one. He has no grasp on how students learn, and makes no attempt to link information together. He uses the same example throughout the entire text. As if in chapter 9, you rememeber what entry 14, is in chapter 3. A horrible book. It is easier to read the GASB statements than it is this book. DO NOT BUY IT!!

It is based on the latest official pronouncements and interpretations of the Financial Accounting Standards Board (FASB) and the Governmental Accounting Standards Board (GASB), as well as the industry audit guides issued by the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants (AICPA) and Governmental Accounting, Auditing, and Financial Reporting (a.k.a., "The Blue Book") published by the Government Finance Officers Association.

As a CPA, college instructor, and Director of Finance of a nonprofit organization, I wanted to upgrade and refresh my skills in non-profit accounting. I found this book and scanned the chapters.

This book could be an excellent resource to study and refresh one's accounting skills BUT, I decided NOT to purchase it because if one sits down and completes the various assignments/problems at the end of each chapter - YOU HAVE NO SOLUTIONS/ANSWERS TO CHECK WHETHER YOU ANSWERED THE QUESTIONS CORRECTLY!

None of these reviewers seem to have been in the circus. No mention of Judge Williaml Webster in 1950 in Hack's book. Surprise that JE was friendly to Robert Kennedy and the others in that clan, other accounts had it that they did not work together well. Hack's book id a sort of aerial view of Mr.Hoover's career.

                      4 out of 5 stars absolute power . . ........2004-12-23

I knew nothing about Hoover before reading this book, but Hack does a comprehensive job in this bio. Hoover is portrayed as a higly intelligent, organized man, who had too much power for his (or the country's) good.

Hoover's need for fame was a double edged sword: It helped promote the FBI and it's intentions, but it also put public image over real substance. The most interesting parts of the book were Hoover tracking down old-time mobsters, and his obsession with Martin Luther King Jr. and his ties to the communist party.

The biggest problems with the book were lack of technical details (Hack throughout mentions illegal wire taps and "black bag jobs", but never goes into details of how they were implemented), and apparent embellishment of the truth. For example, Hack goes into detail in converstaions between 2 people which there are no sources for. This is confusing and detracts from the overall authenticity of the book.

Overall, this was a great book to learn about this unusual leader. I think it paints a farily balanced picture of him, not as an evil man, but of a smart control freak and media hound that was given too much power for too long.

3 out of 5 stars An Unscrupulous Way To Stay In Power.......2004-09-23

Richard Hack has written a biography that really doesn't tell us anything we didn't already know about J. Edgar Hoover, a strange man who headed the F.B.I. for several decades. Hoover kept files on the skeletons in the closet, both real and imagined, on people whose behavior he wanted to control. Hoover used this blackmail to remain in office throughout the changes in the political climate in Washington. His idea of a good read would be to remain home and sift through the files of various individuals and entertain himself with the perceived weaknesses of others. The man who had files on so many people should have had a file himself. Perhaps it gave him comfort to know others had problems that he had a difficult time facing in himself. He was a glory hunter who wanted the credit to go to him in highly publicized cases such as the cases of John Dillinger and "Baby Face" Nelson. Hoover didn't like the publicity Melvin Purvis got in the Dillinger case, so he had him eventually removed from the F.B.I. Hoover also didn't want to admit to the existence of the mafia. Perhaps he wanted to concentrate on two bit gangsters rather than accept the challenge of organized crime. It's scary to think the F.B.I. had such a strange man at the helm for so many years. The improvements made during his tenure could certainly have been made by someone else during all these years.

                      3 out of 5 stars Where's the Beef!.......2004-07-09

Richard Hack's book, "Puppetmaster: The Secret Life of J. Edgar Hoover", is well documented, concise, and well presented, but I had to ask myself "where's the beef". There is simply nothing new in this biography of America's number one policeman. The book is 407 pages long. I read to page 357 and finally had to put it down for keeps - there was simply nothing new in this book to entice me to keep reading. The book is well suited for individuals that have very little to no knowledge of the life of J. Edgar Hoover.

I must admit that I was surprised by what I did not find in this new book on Hoover's life. Hoover has always been referred to as the "keeper of secrets". I would have thought that with so many reputed secrets, Richard Hack would have uncovered something new, never-presented material, but such was not the case with Hack's book. I look forward to the day when some of Hoover's well kept secrets are uncovered and brought to life in a new book. But until then there are no new discoveries to be found in "Puppetmaster: The Secret Life of J. Edgar Hoover". I would like to recommend Curt Centry's book, J. Edgar Hoover: The Man and the Secrets as an alternative to "Puppetmaster".

Written just before Simon's death, this book is a breathtaking odyssey of his adventures crossing the Arctic Sea in a sailboat; a nearly tragic scuba diving accident with his sons, and his direction of the Federal Energy Administration at the height of the oil embargo.

                        5 out of 5 stars A Noble, Extraordinary Life.......2004-03-01

William Simon's is an extraordinary lifestory, and reading his memoir, published posthumously this year following his death in 2000, was thoroughly enjoyable. Simon's life had so many incarnations -- prescient Wall Street trader, principled public servant (energy czar and treasury secretary), conservative intellectual, pathbreaking merchant banker, champion of the U.S. Olympic movement, philanthropist, intrepid adventurer, Eucharistic Minister -- that it's hard to fathom one person leading such an eclectic, richly diverse life.

Known for his sharp opinions while in public office, Simon is largely magnanimous in recounting his life experiences. For example, he declines to elaborate on the reasons for his falling out with a longtime colleague and business partner, saying only that he trusted someone he thought was his friend. He pulls no puches, however, in expressing outrage at wrongheaded government decisions, such as the 1989 FIRREA Act (which suddenly made struggling S&Ls insolvent), Pres. Carter's Olympic boycott (which accomplished little other than prompting Soviet retaliation four years later) and foolish government meddling in the oil market (rationing, price controls, etc. which largely created the 1970s energy "crisis").

The memoir offers several colorful, revealing anecdotes. For example, Simon's pointed counsel to Ronald Reagan, urging him to drop former Pres Ford from consideration for the Vice Presidency. (I never heard or read of this before; Lou Cannon makes no mention of it in his new biography of Reagan's pre-presidential years.) Also, Simon's confrontation -- nearly leading to blows -- with an inebriated Vice President Rockefeller. This is fascinating stuff.

Equally fascinating are the chapters on Simon's pioneering role in the use of Leverage Buyouts to restore underperforming companies to sound profitability. Simon eschewed hostile LBOs, preferring to work cooperatively with, and empowering, management, and deftly abandonded the business when it attracted a surfeit of "takeover artist" capital in the late 1980s.

Simon's separation from, and reconcilliation with, his wife of 40 years is particularly poignant, as is his ministry to indigent AIDs patients and other destitute people. The caring and compassion behind a gruff -- sometimes mercurial exterior -- is palpable.

William Simon led an amazing, noble life. Emulating such an extraordinary human being is beyond the reach of most of us. But thanks to this new book, we can at least read about and admire him. Highly recommended.

With all the wonderful reviews this book received, I couldn't wait to read Matthew Spender's "Within Tuscany." I am very disappointed. The narrative lacks focus and cohesion - it is not well-written. The reader does not get a true feeling for Tuscany. The author is stuck on relating tales of the sad and macabre. I had hoped that as a sculptor and artist, the author would be able to put into words all the beautiful, singular qualities of Tuscany and the Italian people. Sadly, this is not the case. I guess the best way to sum up this book is to say it lacks joy and warmth, which to me are essential elements of Tuscany. Spare yourself the agony (and the pricey shipping and handling charges).

                          5 out of 5 stars Autobiographical Artist..........2000-06-04

I found "Within Tuscany" in the travel section of a bookstore and bought it because it was about Italy. I actually ended up enjoying it mostly because of the quirky life of the author-artist -- or perhaps more correctly, the reflections of an artist about his past several years of living in a particularly attractive place.

He apparently has or had female companions along the way. There's a wife, maybe, and some daughters (pictured in the book in a mid-seventies photo wearing clothes their mother made), and a friend Vittoria with whom he spends a great deal of time. He describes his life style as "alternative" which I take to mean not exactly traditional Italian.

Mathew Spender is English, and like fellow travlers in Tuscany, he relates amusing cultural incidents. He describes several notable friendships with individuals from various classes and backgrounds, one of whom dies two-thirds through the book. I believe he is a sculpter. His descriptions are physical and three dimensional, but he also plays his clarinet in the village band. Throughout the book he recalls his visits to a few notable places in Tuscany and shares his experiences at those places, but you would have to know the places to follow his writing completely.

Spender's writing reminds me a bit of John Mortimer's in "Summer Lease" as it's both sweet and sad. His observations about folks in various stages of life's sorrows and joys are touching. Spender also has an artists comprehension, absorbing and conveying what is going on around him.

5 out of 5 stars The Most Unique Travel Book I've Read.......1999-08-24

Influenced by the title alone, I bought this book a few months before travelling through Chianti a couple of years ago. Although it is in no way an ordinary guidebook (i.e., hotel and restaurant recommendations, who slept where and when), it offered more insights into the people and culture of the region than anything else I have ever read. In fact, a highlight of our trip was finding the little church near Radda that contains Spender's crucifix. Also, his speculation on Shelley's death was provocative, to say the least.

5 out of 5 stars The Real Tuscany.......1999-04-12

Matthew Spender's Within Tuscany was recommended to me by a friend whose family is two generations removed from the Tuscan village of Fiesole. Spender, who is better known as a sculptor whose work was featured in the film Stealing Beauty, writes not to make traveling in Tuscany simpler. In fact, he says, "I loath talking of food, restaurants, hotels, timetables, itineraries." Instead, he seems to be seeking to explain the mysteries and historical complexities of Tuscany to himself and anyone who cares to listen in. Included are ruminations on Michelangelo's struggles to acquire suitable marble, an annual horse race that is at least much cultural ritual as it is a competition, and visits to various churches and offices to marvel at the antiquities which abound in Italy, frequently in the most unlikely places. Spender also captures the Tuscan people in prose which shows respect for them, rather than in the look-how-quaint-they-are caricatures so common in popular travel narratives. As Spender writes to comprehend Tuscany, we are also led to understand, appreciate, and feel the region's daily rhythms as well as its place in Italy's past

Places in Time introduces a host of colorful personalities as it affords rare glimpses into regions beyond which many dared to venture. Looking back at travel through the lens of time, Maxine Rose Schur, says, has provided the meaning that was missing when she was young. "When friends ask me why I waited so long to write about this trip, I answer, `Only now do I understand it." Places in Time is about her understanding. It says something poetic and poignant not only about how the right travel haunts us forever, but how all of us travel in a world we are unwittingly changing.

I loved this book. Ms. Schur caught the sprit of the `60s with her lovely memoir of her 18 month honeymoon when she and her husband literally traveled the world. The many strangers who took Ms. Schur and her husband in and made part of their families are amazing, and Ms. Schur's ability to communicate, even silently, with people of so many cultures takes ones breath away. This book is a poignant reminder of a time, not so very long ago, when a young American couple could freely travel through Turkey, Iran, Bulgaria, Afghanistan and Pakistan without undue fear and of innocence the world has lost. I can't recommend this book highly enough!

                              Book Description

The inspirational Rush Hudson Limbaugh possessed a strength of character, a bedrock integrity, that both commanded respect and endeared him to all who knew him. He rose from humble beginnings to great achievements and prominence in his chosen profession of law.

These four interviews with Limbaugh, and the biographical sketch by his son, Federal Court Judge Stephen N. Limbaugh Sr., reveal a good man, a Christian man, who at age 99 when the interviews occurred was living an extraordinary life of achievement and service. He dedicated his life to service to his family, community, and profession until his death in 1996 at age 104.

                                      Book Description

"Reflections: A Columnist's Journey Through Time" reads like a personal journal, honest and intimate in Jarmy's often poetic way with language. Readers follow her as she shares her will - thought out reactions to both personal and public events. By the end of the book, readers have gained entry into the mind and heart of the author. She journeys from in long marriage woman past fifty and finally is in deep and satisfying new marriage. All the time, readers discover the drama of national and local happenings as seen through the eyes of a woman, caring and passionate about freedom, education and human relationships. In columns from 1992 to the present, we became involved with reactions to present-day dangers, the sorrows of September 11, 1991 and the war in Iraq. But before that, the author writes of less traumatic events: a kind of Ya-Ya Sisterbook of her long-time friendships, travels to vacations via ship, air and automobile, memories of New York City and the Bronx and a whole host of family interactions, some lovely and some sad. Quote: "Reflections" as my column is called, reveals my opinions and worries, my musing about the world of nature and the nature of man.

                                      Book Description

On 24th July 2002, two shifts of miners—18 men in all—entered the Black Wolf Coal Company's Quecreek No 1 Mine, a few miles north-west of the town of Somerset, Pennsylvania. Some seven hours later, nine men were trapped by rapidly rising water in a cavern more than 200 feet below ground, and the nine others, drenched and exhausted, had managed to struggle out to safety. This is the story of a disaster that so nearly claimed those nine lives, and of the heroic efforts of the rescuers who, three days later, finally managed to bring the trapped miners safely back to the surface. It is, too, the account of an unfolding drama, as first Pennsylvania, then all America and finally the world watched and hoped as the rescue was played out in the full glare of the media.

The mining incident at Quecreek was something that shook the nation, but it shook Somerset, PA more than anything. I know someone that knows each miner, and to hear the story of their faith, courage and disbelief first hand is an eye-opening experience. Therefore, these books let you (someone that doesn't know any of the miners) get to know them better.
