Book Description
This is the lyrical journal of Chase's 2,000-mile horseback journey from Mexico to Oregon along the coast trails. He set off in 1911, his purpose being to experience the beauty of the land and to record for posterity the distinctively 'Western' way of life. Chase felt that with the construction of the Panama Canal commerce and industry in California would skyrocket and the old way of life would disappear, along with the sacred nature of the coast lands. So he decided to see it all for himself and record it for future generations. A fascinating look at the towns and wilds of California as they were at the beginning of the 20th century.

A Book that May Change You Life.......2006-12-19
Be careful reading this book: it may change your life. It changed mine. The book inspired me to retrace Mr. Chase's footsteps, or should I say hoof prints. His book is such a delightful "paseo" (leisurely walk) up the stunningly beautiful California Coast that I found myself unable to resist the temptation to do it myself. Thus, there is another description of Mr. Chase's route, produced more than 82 years later, also available on Amazon. Read Mr. Chase's book. Sit back and enjoy the images and personalities of 1911 that Mr. Chase brings to life. Maybe you, too, will be inspired to take your own paseo.
Californias Gold.......2001-08-19
Anyone who appreciates the unspoiled west and california history should find California coast trails by J.Smeaton Chase a pleasant read. Shortly after publishing his diary journals of extensive journeys throughout the Sierra Nevada mountains in Yosemite Trails, Chase embarked on his next adventure on horseback. This trip would take him from Mexico to Oregon along the coastal route of the spacely settled california. Most of the books appeal to me is Chases daily recording of intimate details such as a rare flower or a unique sunset. His daily travels often ended with a campfire on the sand with the ocean waves for a lullabuy. Chases winning personality and knowledge of California history further enhance the book along with frequent references to former events and places of historical significance. California Coast Trails is a trail guide, history book and personal travel diary all in one. You wont regret the read.

Book Description
Capitol Hill veteran Kenneth Ackerman re-creates an American political landscape where fierce battles for power unfolded against a chivalrous code of honor in a country struggling to emerge from the long shadow of the Civil War. James Garfield’s 1880 dark horse campaign after the longest-ever Republican nominating convention, his victory in the closest-ever popular vote for president, his struggle against bitterly feuding factions once elected, and the public’s response to his assassination is the most dramatic presidential odyssey of the Gilded Age—and among the most momentous in our nation’s history. This journey through political backrooms, dazzling convention floors, and intrigue-filled congressional and White House chambers, reveals the era’s decency and humanity as well as the sharp partisanship that exploded in the pistol shots of assassin Charles Guiteau, the disgruntled patronage-seeker eager to replace the elected Commander-in-Chief with one of his own choosing.
Customer Reviews:
A must read for American History Buffs, Gilded Age.......2007-10-11
I enjoyed this book so much, I sent this letter to the author:
"Dear Mr. Ackerman, I recently read and thoroughly enjoyed your fantastic book, Dark Horse: The Surprise Election and Political Murder of President James A. Garfield. I feel it is worthy of a Pulitzer Prize for History. I found your writing style to be engrossing as, even though I knew much of the history you recounted, I read each page of the book most eagerly. I had just finished Roy Morris' Fraud of the Century and, as much as I enjoyed it, I found your book to be a more compelling tale. Your character development is superb and I love how you tied the thread of the Conkling/Blaine feud of 1866 to events throughout the book. The final weaving together of the tale in Chapter 15 is a beautiful closure to a moving story that, as you accurately captured, impacted and captivated large numbers of Americans. Your research and documentation were extremely thorough and quite logically incorporated into the chronological flow of events. Your footnotes are pure joy for a politics and history buff (like me). I didn't really feel I had finished the book until I read the endnotes, as they added to my deeper understanding and appreciation of the events. Having lived through the Kennedy assassination, the comparisons with Garfield's demise are most intriguing and the distinctions also profound. Both were younger presidents who had won narrow victories to gain the White House. Both were succeeded by vice presidents who were clearly 'ticket balancers.' But Kennedy's assassination has forever been plagued with conspiracy theories, while Garfield's had no doubt as to the assassin. Alas, to pursue this line of thought would invite rambling on my part, but these ideas do cross my mind. I think your book would make a great movie, except for the sad reality that Hollywood would inevitably destroy a great story. Also, most likely, it isn't the kind of story that would capture much interest among our populace, at least in my judgment (keeping in mind the kinds of movies that seem to proliferate theater complexes these days). If only I were wrong about this! Your recapitulations of future developments of each of the prime players in the book (Chapter 15) are tailor made for the closing of a great film. I found particularly touching the telling of Mollie Garfield having married Joe Stanley Brown. Some minor observations, suggestions, and thoughts I have are as follows: - A table of the results of the 1880 Presidential Election and a national map of the results (as I have attached) might have been a good addition to the book. I did thoroughly enjoy your tables of the key convention ballots. (Obviously, my bias as a mathematician and cartographer is showing.) - I am working on a book (well, it is really more of a tutorial) of the History of Partisan Representation in the United States Congress. As you are well aware, the story of the evenly divided 47th Senate, in and of itself, is a fascinating one and your accounting of the battle for control of the Senate is most illuminating. Your description of the tie-breaking (precedent setting) votes of Chester Arthur is great drama. -- In this vein, while you point out that one of Arthur's first actions as President was to call the Senate into special session to choose a President Pro Tempore, you never related who they selected for this position. My research indicates that Thomas F. Bayard (D-DE) served from October 10 to 13, 1881, David Davis (Independent-IL) from October 13, 1881 to March 3, 1883, and George F. Edmunds (R-VT) from March 3 to December 2, 1883. Perhaps with the Senate evenly split, this particular tale was too complex and off the focus of your storyline to include. - Not to nit-pick, but in case your book is ever reprinted, some minor points: -- on page 205, last line of paragraph two, the spelling of 'ungentlemanly' missed the editors gaze, -- on page 234, end of line 15 should probably read 'In fact' instead of 'If fact.' -- the last endnote 'I am a poor hater' should be attributed to page 453. - If space had provided for it, including the White House family portrait on the cover of the book would have been wonderful. Just viewing this photo (in the context of the murder of Garfield and all you shared about his wife and children) truly conveys the personal tragedy that occurred, separate from the great loss to our country. - Indeed, as you note, we do need a solid, contemporary biography of James G. Blaine. Equally, I would welcome one of Chester A. Arthur. While a product of machine politics, as you described him, he showed character, spirit, decency, and integrity that made him attractive. I would enjoy reading more about him. Again, please accept my thanks for your superb work and for sharing this wonderful tale. Sincerely, R. Bruce Telfeyan"
--By the way, he did write me back a substantial note of thanks. As did other reviewers, I subsequently visited the Garfield NHS in Mentor, OH, and his burial site (really a beautiful shrine) in the eastern part or Cleveland, OH.
Well done tale of political intrigue.......2007-03-23
This is a fascinating look at a little known president in American history. It covers the convention that nominated Garfield where he was not even a contender. Garfield was a representative for General Sherman who was against General Grant and James Blaine. This convention was one of the most interesting in our history and shows how the freedom of delegates can result in a compromise that gives a candidate acceptable to many. While none would wholeheartedly jump behind Garfield he was able to take a nomination. The New York crowd who backed Grant was particularly bitter. Roscoe Conkling who is made out to be the great villain in this story provides an interesting foil. Chester Arthur is shown to be a man even more unlikely than Garfield for the presidency and it is telling that after his term is up he is hardly even considered for another. The election process also proves to be interesting showing a time before TV and radio when stump speeches reigned supreme. Garfield's assassin turns out to be one of his campaigners who want a political appointment. He feels that by killing Garfield he will be rewarded with a patronage position. Garfield's election seems to bring about a divide in the country that is already distrustful after the election of Rutherford B. Hays. Ironically it is the death of Garfield and the unlikely ascension of Arthur that will heal the nation. This dark horse unified the country in his death and paved the way for civil service reform. For those who have an interest in the Gilded Age this is a must read. For those who are fascinated by political history they will find this a riveting tale that cannot be put down.
Very Readable History Lesson.......2006-10-27
I read this book desiring a biography of James Garfield. This book failed at being a true biography. What I received instead was an excellent description of a year and a half of American history, starting with the 1880 Republican convention that eventually nominated Garfield to President Chester Arthur's taking office following Garfield's assisination.
This book reads like a novel. It also contains numorous historical nuggets. It is fair to each of the people dealt with. For example, Senator Roscoe Conklin is not very likeable, but it points out he was one of the few to welcome a black senator.
The focus of this book is the division in the Republican party at this time, which was a factor of Garfield's assisination. While there is no effort made on the part of Ackerman to give a warning to us today, one can learn from the intense hatred that existed in this time, and try to avoid the same in our present day.
Excellent look at a near forgotten time.......2006-10-12
Ackerman did a superb job in peeling back many layers of politics that few people understand. While keeping it interesting and easy to read, he informs and educates the reader on a little known/understood time in our history.
A very informative and well-written book.......2006-04-10
I have for some time been interested in James A. Garfield, one of the most intelligent people to have held the office of President of the United States. He was a distinguished academic (who created an original proof of the Pythagorean Theorem, though that gets no mention in this book), a successful Civil War General, and an equally successful politician. But although this book only covers a period of less than two years, from Garfield's nomination by a Republican convention deadlocked between supporters of Ulysses S. Grant and James G. Blaine to his assassination by a mentally-deranged office-seeker, Charles Guiteau, it told me a lot that I did not know about Garfield and about 1880s-era politics.
The book is rather thick, given the short chronological span that it covers. But it's all fascinating reading; I couldn't put the book down at night when it was time to go to bed. The author does some things that I am very happy about: when he describes something, whether the geography of Washington, D. C. or the inner workings of the U. S. Senate, that was very different in 1880 from now, he gives a good description of the differences, helping the reader understand the context in which things are happening in the book.
His description of the feud between the two factions of the Republican Party -- the U. S. Grant/Roscoe Conkling "Stalwarts" and the Blaine "Half-Breeds," provides a major explanation of the political happenings of that era. And following the political maneuverings between Garfield, once elected President, and Roscoe Conkling (the powerful Senator from New York and leader of New York's Republican Party) gives me a great appreciation for how politically savvy Garfield must have been. He could have been a great President, I believe, if he'd been allowed to live.
Ackerman makes a good case for the thesis that medical malpractice, not Guiteau's gun, was the cause of Garfield's death. His claim that, even with the rudimentary state of medicine in 1881, Garfield would have survived if the doctors had treated him differently, is hard to dispute. This is enough to give one some reason to think.
This is a very good book, and I echo the other reviewers' recommendations.
Book Description
The rebirth of the feminine surrounds us in many formsfrom the worldwide movement for women's rights to the resurgence of interest in the feminine spirituality of the Goddess and the Divine Mother. What is the spiritual meaning behind this rebirth? What is the feminine divine? Who is she?
She has had many names in many cultures: Ishtar in Babylon, Inanna in Sumeria, Athena, Hera, Demeter, and Persephone in Greece, Isis in Egypt, Durga, Kali, and Lakshmi in India. She is the Shekinah of the Kabbalists and the Sophia, or Divine Wisdom of the gnostics.
Rudolf Steiner called her AnthroposophiaDivine Wisdom who descended from the spiritual world and passed through humanity to become the present goal and archetype of human wisdom in the cosmos.
This book contains most of what Steiner had to say about Sophia. We see him "midwifing" the birth of the Sophia, the new Isis, divine feminine wisdom, in human hearts on Earth.
Each chapter explores the mystery of the various relationships of Sophia: Sophia and Isis, Sophia and the Holy Spirit, Sophia and Mary, the mother of Jesus (and Mary Magdalene), Sophia and the Gnostic Achamod, and Sophia and the New Isis.
Above all, in a remarkable way, Steiner makes clear the relationship of Christ and Sophia:
Isis-Sophia, Divine Wisdom, slain by Lucifer,
Carried off on wings of world-wide forces into cosmic space,
The Christ-Will working in us
Will wrest Her from Lucifer,
And on vessels of spiritual knowledge,
Call Isis-Sophia, Divine wisdom, to new life in human souls.

Book Description
Sylvia Salinger was sent away from the boy next door, but it was a wonderful exile—a year in Paris, where she met everyone from Gertrude Stein and Alice B. Toklas to Matisse and Mainbocher, where she attended art exhibits, ballet premieres, and the openings of new theaters, also visiting shops, museums, cinemas, and the French countryside.
Serving as her diary, the letters in this book describe Sylvia’s experiences as she travels from Oakland, California, to Paris. They describe with sparkle, wit, and intelligence the adventures of a rich American girl among the artists and musicians of Paris at the end of the Belle Époque.
The 24-year-old Sylvia spent her year in Paris with a delightful chaperone, her maiden aunt Harriet Levy. At 46, Harriet was a seasoned world traveler and a good friend of Gertrude Stein and her family. Thus, both Gertrude’s famous salon and that of Gertrude’s brother Michael were open to Harriet and Sylvia, and therein lies much of the adventure. Half in awe, half amused, Sylvia describes Gertrude Stein as the “biggest, most awfully dressed person I have ever seen.” It was Stein in turn who said of Sylvia, “I don’t see what all the fuss is about. Sylvia is just a very pretty girl from the country.”
Sylvia Salinger was witness to one of the most remarkable eras in modern cultural history. She recorded it for her family even as she left a record for herself—and for us. She does not tell her story as an artist creating something of her own, nor as a sophisticate impressing an audience with the people she knows and the sights she has seen, but with the honesty and subtle humor of “a very pretty girl from the country.”

Customer Reviews:
Eye-opening, effective.......2007-03-22
I bought the book with the intent to go through the exercises with a friend. I read the book before beginning a schedule and was blown away. Right away, I identified with two stereotypes. It was as if a veil had been lifted because I now understand why I handle things and why I need help. I am in the midst of the steps and I can already tell a difference. Not just in the way I handle money but my attitude towards money and life.
The book is effectively well written and blunt. I have read other books about how to improve my relationship to money, but this book goes where other books don't - your habits and self and their roots. We have to take responsiblity for our habits but it's helpful to understand that we inherited them (in my case) to be able to break the cycle.
Change your Mind & Change Your Cash flow.......2007-02-01
This book goes on to describe 5 different money drunks
Among them is the poverty addict, who is addicted to poverty. Usually this kind of person subconsciously feels that in order to be a good person or to be spiritual they must suffer. Then there's the Big Deal Chaser. This person goes from business start up to business start up looking for "THE ONE" to fix it all. They have the subconscious belief of "when I'll get rich I'll show'em all". Then there's the Maintenance money drunk. This person has let go of their dreams to "get a real job" or to get a job that pays the bills. They don't believe in "fairy tales".
I think we have let ourselves have a distorted view of money. Religion doesn't help. Sayings like "money is the root of all evil" or "the rich are getting richer while poor are getting poorer".
Even wealthy and rich people can be poverty addicts, feeding into the thinking that there isn't enough money to go around for everyone.
Most likely you'll find yourself being a little bit of all 5 money drunk types with maybe a concentration in one or two.
Between the poverty addiction and the big deal chasers, I think most of us are afraid to really evaluate our relationship with money and really let ourselves have a spiritual relationship with money. (Spiritual and money ...huh?? does that even exist? YES!)
This book makes you realize that no matter if you win the lottery or get more money coming in, if your inner feelings towards money are not balanced, you will most likely create situations that will suck you dry financially. (Bills, credit, debt, etc)
Cliches such as "money isn't everything" may pop into your mind, but when the topic of family comes up people don't say "family isn't everything" or when the topic of health comes up people don't say "health isn't everything". When the topic of electricity comes up , people don't say "electricity isn't everything".
I think money has gotten a bad wrap due to a variety of things we've been taught including religion teaching that wealth is bad. Money is like electricity. You can use it to warm your home and cook a good meal for your friends and loved one....or you can use it to COOK YOUR FAMILY. That doesn't make electricity good or bad. Electricity just is. Money is the same way - it just IS.
I recommend this book to anyone, especially those who are spiritually inclined. We all owe it to ourselves and to our loved ones to be wealthier! In my opinion we ALL deserve to have the finer things in life!
Excellent techniques for gaining control over your finances.......2007-01-11
Julia Cameron, the author of the Artist's Way, Walking in This World, and Vein of Gold, among others, has done it again. She and partner, Mark Bryan, have created an approach to personal money management that takes into account our emotional attitudes and training about money. Many times our patterns interfere with the way we are able to deal with money and their approach helps us to unhook those negative patterns. Clear and concise, this book is well-written and brief, but powerful.
I highly recommend it. You won't regret it.
Pleasantly amazed..........2006-06-07
I am what this book characterizes as a compulsive spender. Reading this book not only helped me get my spending under control but also helped me change my opinion on how I viewed money in my life. It really goes through different types of people such as the compulsive spender (me), to the cash co-dependant--someone who actually assists someone with their money issues (i.e. a woman who is continuously giving a boyfriend her money, when he continuously loses the money and does not do him nor her any good.). This book works on self esteem and an "I can do" attitude towards money. The first half of the book focuses on finding what type of "Money Drunk" you are and identifying with other scenarios with quick stories and examples. The second half is the battle plan, that lasts 90 days and is grouped into different themes; Awarness (Finding out what and how you acquired this problem), Acceptance (Learning to deal with your addiction), and Action (Do something about it and how). It even has a relapse checklist and a section towards the end on spirituality. If you are not into the religion aspect, please note the book does not "steer" you towards counting directly on religion so don't worry. Everyone can enjoy and benefit from this book which is easy to read and flows well... Even loved ones of money drunks can benefit from this book. I get distracted easily and never seem to finish a book but this book was so well written and gave me such continuous hope I couldnt help but keep on reading!
Change Your Mind About Money!.......2006-04-23
As a therapist and seminar leader on money issues, I love their "Are You A Money Drunk?" quizzes. They help explain and re-orient the underlying attitudes and beliefs that fuel a bad relationship with money. The book offers a foundation of healing for people who think they cannot control their spending, and are using money as a drug.

Book Description
In the summer of 1883, Franz Boas, widely regarded as one of the fathers of Inuit anthropology, sailed from Germany to Baffin Island to spend a year among the Inuit of Cumberland Sound. This was his introduction to the Arctic and to anthropological fieldwork. This book presents, for the first time, his letters and journal entries from the year that he spent among the Inuit, providing not only an insightful background to his numerous scientific articles about Inuit culture, but a comprehensive and engaging narrative as well.
Using a Scottish whaling station as his base, Boas travelled widely with the Inuit, learning their language, living in their tents and snow houses, sharing their food, and experiencing their joys and sorrows. At the same time he was taking detailed notes and surveying and mapping the landscape and coastline. Ludger M¦ller-Wille has transcribed his journals and his letters to his parents and fiancTe and woven these texts into a sequential narrative. The result is a fascinating study of one of the earliest and most successful examples of participatory observation among the Inuit. Originally published in German in 1994, the text has been translated into English by William Barr, who has also published translations of other important works on the history of the Arctic.
Illustrated with some of Boas's own photos and with maps of his field area, Franz Boas among the Inuit of Baffin Island, 1883-1884 is a valuable addition to the historical and anthropological literature on southern Baffin Island.

British scholars that discuss Berg's life and cultural environment, his style and technique, and his unfinished second opera Lulu.
