get this book and take off for an adventure........2001-08-13

definitely a must for a n.z. bound cycling adventure. this book keeps it all simple and clear without what you don't need. i cycled 4100km in n.z. by mixing and matching routes from the book and found it very useful. the only down side is the not very convenient format and the lack of good route maps which is not a big deal altogether. good luck.

Yes, I am a Kiwi [native New Zealander]and have found this book extremely valuable for planning a tour around both islands. I could find out all the information, but why reinvent the wheel?? It is all laid on here..including an insight into our customs and language.

In February '97 me, my bike, and this book covered 1300 miles of New Zealand. I used this book extensively to plan my route by mixing & matching the routes covered in the book. obtw, in New Zealand you don't need a map, you only have a couple of roads to choose from and this book covers just about everything you need. I highly recommend it and appreciate the effort Bruce put into the book.

A Great Biography.......2007-03-16

Stanley Lane-Poole's biography of Saladin was published in 1898 but remains the best source of information about the sultan. The author has done his research consulting Christian and Muslim contemporary sources - some of which he quotes from - and conveys Saladin's life in beautiful prose. An excellent example is the following except concerning Crusader ambassadors given the unique privilege of seeing the Fatimid Caliph of Egypt.

"They were led by mysterious corridors and through guarded doors, where stalwart Sudanis saluted with naked swords. They reached a spacious court, open to the sky, and surrounded by arcades resting on marble pillars; the paneled ceilings were carved and inlaid in gold and colours; the pavement was rich mosaic. The unaccustomed eyes of the rude knights opened wide with wonder at the taste and refinement that met them at every step; - here they saw marble fountains, birds of many notes and wondrous plumage, strangers to the western world..."

Mr. Lane-Poole provides an invaluable look at the world of Saladin giving us the history of the Seljuk Turks and the First Crusade, and the life of Saladin is presented with no information lacking and with a critical eye for his subject. The struggle between Christians and Muslims is well presented and we are given completed accounts of the Third Crusade from both sides. The book is illustrated with many photographs, maps and drawings; it also includes a list of the principle contemporary historians of the period.
I wanted to know more about Saladin having seen the film Kingdom of Heaven, and this book was perfect.

I really enjoyed reading this book. It is a facsinating story of a great warrior who fought for his country. I can recommend this book to anyone interested in the histroty of the muslim world.

It does not deserve the one star it is getting........2006-06-22

I am interested in these sorts of events, I have a degree in political science so I am interested in government officials, and as a graduate student I read boring things all the time. This book is worse than any policy review or textbook I have ever had to read.

To be honest I could not make it through the entire book because it was that inane. The first chapter is almost entirely who attended the funeral. Okay, fair enough, perhaps such a synopsis is necessary to introduce everyone who will show up in later events. And then the second chapter tells you how as a child, Mary was forced to attend her parents' poolside parties where baby peacock was served on plates set afloat in the pool. Who cares? Well, not me.

The events behind the book are probably very interesting; this treatment of them, however, is not. Skip it, or get it at the library. (No, really, read something else.)

not all we thought.......2006-02-17

President Kennedy was not all we thought at the time. We reverd him, his family life and all that he did. This is an eye opening book and as such, necessary reading for the times we lived through with rose colored glasses.

Holy cow!.......2005-08-30

I'm not a professional book reviewer and I realize I'm a year or two too late, but this story is unbelievable. First of all the title, "A Very Private Woman", is completely misleading. Mary Meyer was not a very private woman she was an exhibitionist of the first rate. Her attempts at being "different" appear to merely be efforts to be recognized. From her early beginnings in a completely disfunctional family, to her own disfunctional family she continued to show herself as one who demanded recognition and would do anything to get it. If anyone wonders what's gone wrong in this country read this book about Mary Meyer and her many associates who appeared to be adulterers, alcoholics, druggies, and anything else you can think of, while at the same time deciding what the course of the country should be. Really unbelievable!

Great story, not a great book.......2005-07-13

The story of Mary Pinchot Meyer is a lot more interesting than this book. Occasionally, the author tries to recreate scenes and conversations on a pretty slim set of facts, supposing what may have motivated very private people she never met.

Oh, and Dean Acheson was not *Under-Secretary* of State! Did this woman read anything about diplomacy, the Cold War, or Washington society between 1940 and 1965? How could she and her copy editor not know that Dean Acheson was our Secretary of State, and a major figure in post-war Washington?

Washington was a very exciting place to be -- but you won't get the full description of those times in this book. too bad.

Brings Back the Era of the 60s.......2004-04-01

What a great book to escape into. This is a quick read, and a must for anyone who is fascinated with both the Kennedy's and the early 60s. Sure makes you think about what it must have been like to know JFK and be part of his private circle. I definately recommend this book!

I laughed out loud a few times and overall I enjoyed the book. The reason I didn't give it 5 stars were...#1 an internationally acclaimed author should be able to update her home w/ central air and heat (I got tired of the whining about the furnace)#2 The author kept writing about being alone in the Country and she wasn't alone, she was w/ her Hubby. There were a few other dissapointments but I don't want to give anything else away.

Gorgeous, funny, poignant.......2006-10-25

This book is gorgeously written, funny, self-effacing and poignantly insightful. Ostensibly it's about moving to the country and remodeling a house. But it's really about how we humans try to make lives amidst the swirling, changing facets of nature and humanity. How do we continue on in the face of concerns small and large--from trying to heat our homes in the midst of severe winters, to facing the loss of those we count on and love? Never mawkish or cloying, Miller is an astute, sensitive observer of the human condition.

A Nice Easy Read.......2005-08-22

The first 20 pages dragged and sounded a bit snooty...but I really wanted to like this book and said I'd wait to page 50 to decide. As I read on I ended up getting drawn in and curious. At the end I was disapointed on the quick and simple ending. I would have liked more details about what happened to the home and the author. All in all it was a charming book on country life that most of us would love to live!

A Celebration of Appalachia.......2004-02-06

In this book Cathleen Miller celebrates her new life in Appalachia, bringing a sense of wonder to the landscape, seasons and citizens of Central Pennsylvania. She is a skilled writer and one is soon lulled into the warm cocoon of this couple's world by Miller's engaging voice-alternately hilarious, poignant, inquisitive, and revealing.

Critics of her memoir seem to have missed a few key points in the narrative. Miller makes herself the butt of her jokes-not her neighbors. She talks about how she doesn't understand them, she finds their traditions unfamiliar, but her essayist's questioning always comes from a place of respectful curiosity, as if examining her own opinions in this new world as much as those of the residents of Centre County. In fact, one look at the opening pages of The Birdhouse Chronicles should say it all, as Miller chooses to honor her neighbors in the dedication: "For the good folks who live on Burd Lane with my gratitude and respect." The reader from Aaronsburg also seems not to have noticed that the author and her husband are donating their time to preserve historic landmarks in her beloved region, thereby providing-along with this great memoir of place-a lasting tribute to rural Pennsylvania.

Even though I live in State College, I first heard about this book from reading a review of it in The Wall Street Journal. The reviewer mentioned how the book slowed down time to emulate the experience of living in the country, and for me that was a welcome gift.

Self-centered drivel.......2003-12-16

As a native of Centre County I looked forward to hearing someones view of an area of the country that I have left and returned to for its quirky charm and customs. But instead what I found was a smug, self-indulgent story that rambles on never to make a profound or astute observation. The author portrays herself and her husband as superiors to their earnest, hardworking neighbors --she laughs at, not with them. She mocks their holiday customs, their offers of help, and assistance, their entertainment,their towns, every element of their lives. If I could give this book negative stars, I would, but the form wont let me. I can't believe any publisher thought this book she be printed.

Life and Death in the "Paradise" concentration camp.......2000-12-06

The Diary of Gonda Redlich is an enlightening tale of life and death within Theresienstadt, the "resort" or "paradise" concentration camp of the Jewish Holocaust. Throughout the course of the diary, we see Theresienstadt from the first hand experiences of Gonda, the head of children's affairs and the transports. We learn of all of the great cultural activities of Theresienstadt, while we learn of the transports east to Auschwitz, the greatest death camp of all. The first hand experiences and writings of Gonda provide envaluable information to any serious historian of the Jewish Holocaust. Can any person read this book? Must you be a historian? No, I believe that this book can be read by anybody. It is a timeless tale of life (with the birth of Gonda's son and the activities in Theresienstadt) and death (Gonda eventually was sent to die in Auschwitz) in the final solution. It is first hand proof for the world of the horrors and sometimes joys in the Jewish Holocaust.

Great book! Timeless Advice!.......2006-10-15

This book is ten years old but it still applicable and full of excellent advice. I too was pessimistic about her advice of paying only the minimum on your bills. Most financial advisors focus on getting out of debt first and having little savings but her book take a much more holistic approach becuase it helps you to make small steps to paying off your debt and huge steps to getting your spending under control and learning to save!!!! I like Suze Orman but her plan keeps you dependent on your credit cards. Put all your cash on paying down your debts and if you have an emergency use your credit card. No way! I like Carol's plan. It is a slow and steady process of debt elimination but when you are finally out of debt you also have savings and you are NOT dependent on your credit cards. Her plan is the best plan to help you get out of debt and STAY out of debt. My bet is on Carol for my best chance at financial freedom.

All my life I've been intimidated by money, finances, budgeting... I don't even balance my checkbook. I was so worried about not doing it right that I didn't do it at all.

Another thing I've been afraid to do was to develop goals and go for them. What if I made the wrong choices?

Somehow this little book drove it home for me that no one was going to make my decisions for me, and no one was going to finance them, either, if I didn't.

I love this book. Because of it, I am taking control of my money, and making decisions about my future. It doesn't have to be drudgery - it can be fun!

If you've always been "bad with money" get this book!

The only thing that worked for me.......2003-07-15

I know a lot of people are wary of the advice to pay only the minimum on their bills, but it worked for me. I bought this book shortly after it was published, and so far I have paid off four credit cards and saved enough to buy a house. I bought a digital camera with coins I saved in a jar. Why does this method work? Because it enables you to have enough cash and savings so that you are not tempted to use credit to buy "fun" things, or to use plastic to get through the month.

I didn't keep a lot of separate savings accounts, just one at the bank and a jar for coins at home. The key is to pay only the minimum on your cards, and save any extra money that you can. And avoid "stealing" from your savings to pay for trivial things. Keep your goals in mind.

Do I still have debt? Yes. But it's half what I used to have and it's not growing. I can handle the bills without stress, and I do less impulse-buying because I have my goals in mind. Try this book if you have trouble making it through the month without using credit.

P.S. Occasionally I will set a savings goal to pay off the last bit of a credit account at once. If you are not comfortable paying the minimum only, you might consider having a "credit payoff" savings account--just don't deprive yourself of "fun" savings goals at the same time.

Great motivational book for saving - debt reduction?????.......2002-07-20

I gave this book an extra 2 stars over my original opinion due its motivational value. The "even if you save change in a jar you can do it" pep talk is great. It's true, some of us do get so caught up in the bills that we forget that even small amounts can add up. However, I totally disagree with the advice to pay the minimum on credit cards. At the very least make a consistent payment beyond the minimum and stay at that amount until its paid off. Then take whatever amount that was and apply it to the next bill in line and so on. The snowball effect will get you out of debt sooner than you thought.

While Carol Keeffe's method is superficially appealing, the problem is that by paying only the minimum on your credit cards, you consign yourself to years of debt and hundreds or thousands of dollars in interest payments. It seems like she is encouraging people to be in denial about their debts -- which is probably what got them into trouble in the first place! While Keeffe's method is better than nothing (at least she insists you cut up the credit cards!), a faster and (in my opinion) much better method is the one used by Mary Hunt in her books "Debt-Proof Living" and "The Complete Cheapskate."

The style may seem quaint, but if you have spent any time at all reading scholarly works from this time period, you will find that Hill's prose is far from unreadable. By and large, I continue to find Hill's style to be readily approachable after 3 decades worth of repeated readings.

In any case, the prose is not what makes this work invaluable. Like another reviewer stated, you cannot do any study of Stradivari instruments without first consulting Hill, and Hill remains the foundation of all scholarly work concerning Stradivari, even a century later. While not exactly for laymen, nonetheless this book is relatively accessible to those who have only a passing knowledge in stringed instruments. For those more expert, Hill remains the essential starting point. If you have a young violinist in your family, I would recommend this book as a gift. I still have my decades-old book, received one Christmas long long ago, and I am glad that I got it.

One of the essential texts.......2000-12-04

This is perhaps the most important book ever published relating to the topics of violin making and the unchallenged greatest maker of all times. The Hills are the most respected scholars, ever, of the violin, and this was a landmark publication in 1902 and remains so. Under the quaint language is the information that subsequent scholars have used as the basis of their understanding of Stradivari's work (and stolen for the basis of many of their own articles and books), and almost everything written in the book is still considered accurate--an unprecedented event in violin publishing, where there's much more myth than fact in many books, especially those of the past, many of which are essentially fiction posing as non-fiction. There is simply no reason not to own this book if you are interested in violins.

Good, but very long winded.......1998-08-21

This is a good book for people who want to learn more about the great Italian luthier, but it definitely has its flaws. The book was written around the turn of the 20th century and its style is very stilted and convuluted. I often had the feeling the authors could have conveyed the information they give us in two pages in one paragraph. Also, their worship of anything related to Stradivari gets to be a bit much after awhile. Still, this is the book to turn to for information on this great violin maker.

An excellent Autobiography.......2003-11-26

Peter Kenez was my Russian History professor at the University of California, Santa Cruz. His lectures were always balanced and informative, and were greatly enhanced by his dry wit. Throughout the class he gave small hints of his life before coming to the United States, but never spelled out precisely the details. So it was with great enthusiasm that I read this book, which allowed me to learn the background of a man that I had already come to know. The best aspect of this book is that Professor Kenez's personality shines through - reading it is like listening to the man speak, but without the Hungarian accent. Highly recommended to anyone with an interest in modern European history.
