More than I can absorb.......2002-02-07

As I get ready for a summer trip to China, there are many practical things I wanted to know about. What to expect in a Chinese toilet for example. What to shop for where. And a mydrid of other questions. I've never been to the east and I had no idea what I might be putting myself in for. Therefore, I needed the information this book has to offer. I won't really be going to the big tourist places and this book offered much reasonable advice on what to expect where. And it covers almost any area or city one might reasonable expect to go to. It (or pertenent parts) will definitely be in my pack when I leave.

Kept this with me in China.......2001-08-12

Although things are changing so fast in China that no book can be absolutely up to date, this one is excellent. Before going on a 12 day (June 25-July 6, 2001) China tour I spent over $100 on guide books. This one went with me.

Tips about what to do & watch out for in everything from hotels, touring, tipping, eating etc. were good, valid, clear and - most importantly - easy to find in the book when you're in a hurry on a crowded street in Beijing.

While some other books simply tell you to beware of rip offs - with cab drivers for example, this book goes on to tell you what you should expect to pay.

There are also small history sections for lots of key cities. Although I was on a hand held tour for 12 days, I kept this book in my carryon wherever I went - plane, ship, or bus!

Be a Tourist, Not a Traveler.......2001-07-26

If the ratings allowed, I would evaluate this book as 3 1/2***. Comparing this with Open Road for the traveler, my rating must stand. There are other books that I will put in second and third place (this in fourth). However, comparing these with Fodor and the like, I would place this at the top. The question becomes one of deciding who the book really serves. While labeled as being for the "traveler," one who moves around and stays in places for short or long times usually alone or in a small group, I see this book as fine for the "tourist," one who comes to visit a country, see a few big cities and sites, often with n an organized group or structured itinerary.

The tourist doesn't have to be concerned about what to do in an emergency in a given community. The tourist is more interested in learning who to file a complaint in case something goes wrong in a community or with any of its merchants or features. For example look at the information on Fuzhou, the capital of Fujian province, on the east coast of China across from Taiwan. There is no population or temperature data at the start of this section(P. 317). There are no estimated prices to take a bus, train or plane to Hong Kong, Xiamen or Shanghai. There is a brief section identifying a few major hotels and two restaurants outside of the hotels in Fuzhou. But, for excursions and day trips there is more information than many of the other books with which this is being compared. In the "Practical Information" section (Pp. 322-323), there are five travel services identified, a place for tourists to file complaints and a tourist hotline. Other books focusing more on travelers would include practical information on police, health care facilities, postal services and media. Fuzhou is a city gaining more importance due to location and the expansion of the Hong Kong/Canton trading areas.

Fuzhou is listed in Chapter 16, Pp. 317-420 "EAST CHINA." This chapter includes many other cities such as Nanjing, Wuxi and Suzhou. But, there is no separate map for East China. There are individual maps for Nanjing (5.5 million) and Qingdao (2 million) but no other cities. Also some of the cities listed cannot be found on the overall China map, even if over one million people live in them.

Chapter 15 "SHANGHAI" on Pp. 275-316 covers China's second or third most populated city, depending if Hong Kong is counted (not by this author). The chapter presents lots of helpful information on hotels, places to eat by cuisine type, night life and shopping. There is also 1 1/2 pages devoted to excursions outside of Shanghai. But, Shanghai is such an exciting, growing city that one can stay in it for a while. "Shanghai is the best city to shop in China outside of Hong Kong for selection and quality, and time should be set aside here to shop if interested" (P. 308). There is a short "Sidebar" on P. 304 "FOLLOW PRESIDENT CLINTON'S SHANGHAI ITINERARY." The code of the Shanghai map on P. 289 does not show locations of the Shanghai Library, General Motors Plant or Portman Hotel (585 rooms were used by the group).

There are good bits of information on China but I could not find a list of Chinese and English words. Rely on a guide and take a small Chinese/English dictionary.

China is a safe, fascinating country. This book is enjoyable, especially for tourists. The Center for Disease Control and author recommends some shots that should be taken. ...END

A Must Have Travel Guide for China.......2001-03-12

The China Guide is the most comprehensive travel book available on the market today providing information on over 100 Chinese cities. The guide provides all the basic details on the most popular and highly visited Chinese tourist cities and attractions. But more importantly, it gives excellent information on how to best experience the country by touring less visited cities and attractions. As a first time traveler to China, the China Guide provided me the detailed information needed to confidently plan my own itinerary which included both Hong Kong and Beijing as well as a visit to my parent's ancestral village in rural China. Without the guide, I would have never been able to locate this city and the numerous surrounding cities and attractions to visit and enjoy.

More generally, the China Guide provides excellent personal descriptions and practical details of various transportation options, hotels, restaurants, and shopping areas for numerous Chinese cities. The book is packed with facts and tips about everything a novice traveler to China may need from air transportation to detailed taxi and bus information, from tipping to toilets, from the best to the most unusual places to shop - there is not a subject that is not addressed!

The author, Ruth Lor Malloy, is a well seasoned China traveler and can give a special perspective to the travel information provided in the guide due to her Chinese ancestry. The author assumes nothing and provides you all the information you need to know to have a wonderful trip to China. Ms. Malloy even maintains a website where she updates information in the book and will specifically answer any questions that you may have. She was a great help to me personally in planning my first China trip.

Review of "China Guide" by Ruth Lor Malloy

No one does China better than Ruth Lor Malloy. She covers both the sunny and shadow side of this intriguing country in her "China Guide". By conscientiously seeking out new areas and revisiting former sites on her extensive trips to China two or three times each year, she stays on top of the rapid changes in tourism that take place there. And while she's at it, she's extremely frank.

If she's filled with a sense of wonder watching 2000 horses galloping across a plain high in the mountains, she conveys that experience to the reader. If a hotel or restaurant is "filthy" she describe it as so. If you want to know the best mode of transportation in China, she has it documented, even as far as price. 1st rate biography.......2005-08-22

Over the past 25 years I have read dozens of biographies. Most are not much more than a chronological listings of a person's accomplishments with little depth or analysis. This is one of the few biographies I have read that helps us understand the person which is what a real biography should do. But it is more than a biography. It helps us understand the life and the times of Tom McCall. I highly recommend this book to anyone wanting to get to know Tom McCall, Oregon political history of the mid 20th century and the environmental movement.

Tom McCall's Story Is Oregon's Story.......2003-07-27

More than two decades after his death, almost three decades after he left the governor's office, Tom McCall remains the defining figure of Oregon politics. It was during his tenure in office (1967-1975) that Oregon gained its reputation as a national leader in innovative public policy.

The McCall era saw Oregon protect virtually all of its beaches for public use; adopt the first bottle bill in the nation; clean up the Willamette River; adopt the country's first statewide land-use planning system; and much more. Although many of these concepts did not originate with McCall, he was the catylist and provided the leadership to make them a reality.

This era is brilliantly chronicled by Brent Walth in "Fire At Eden's Gate." Walth, a reporter for the Eugene Register-Guard, and now The Oregonian, knows the state and its leadership well, and this allows him to tell the McCall story with comprehensiveness and clarity. But this is more than a political biography; Walth also chronicles the story of McCall's celebrated family (including grandfather Thomas W. Lawson, "the Copper King"), his path to the governor's office, and his sometimes troubled personal life.

Anyone interested in understanding Oregon public life in the second half of the 20th century should enjoy and benefit from reading this well-crafted biography.

Where have all the Tom McCall's gone??.......2003-02-17

This biography of the modern day father of Oregon, makes this native long for days past. For days when Oregon was a leader on the national politcla/cultural/social scene.

Walth does an excellent job detailing not only the political successes of one of Oregon's greatest politicians, but also of the man's personal shortcomings.

I am not certain how much appeal this book will have to non-Oregonian's or people who are unfamiliar with the Pacific Northwest, but I feel that it should be required reading by all students of political science attending Oregon universities.

Our state legislators who are constantly invoking McCall's name and legacy to advance their own political gains, would do well to read this biography. Our elected officials of today pale in comparison to the individual giants of years past.

Oregonians Explained.......2003-02-09

I am a Native Oregonian living on the east coast and this book helped me understand why I feel like a fish out of water in the midst of uncontrolled suburban sprawl, minimal recycling facilities, and chemical pollution violations are repeatedly ignored by local politicians.
Mr. Walth's book was exciting to read. I recommend it to anyone seeking to understand Oregonians and why we're so proud of the place we call home. Brent Walth tells the story of how Tom McCall gave us that pride.

Deserves a place in every hotel and bed/breakfast gift shop across Oregon -- for visitors to the Pacific Northwest to pick up. Walth tells the McCall story and in doing so coaches the reader about the things Oregonians are the most passionate about. Most of us cannot travel to another state and name their most famous governor -- yet McCall's legacy is often mentioned by domestic and international visitors to Oregon.

One of my favorite books about jazz musicians.......1998-09-02

I can't believe that this book is not reveiwed. As a big band trumpet player for twenty five years it provided insight into not just Woody Herman,but the musicians that played on his band . That's what this book is really about. The life of being on the road with a big band. I could relate as I've been their and if you read this book you can live it to. The book is written by the alumni of the band as a kind of tribute to the man who created the band that played the blues. Its' more anecdotes then a actual biography.

Covering Up FBI Crimes.......2001-08-24

This book is partly true. It does cover David Biro's 1990 murder of Nancy and Richard Langert and their unborn child in a Chicago suburb. It does reveal that the 357 Magnum murder weapon belonged to FBI agent Lewis, but doesn't say why Lewis was never arrested. It does mention that FBI agent "Ed" Buckley took over the investigation and directed local law enforcement away from their sole suspect, the murderer, and onto "the IRA" and me. (I'm "Haggerty" in this book.) It covers up the murder investigation report in the files of the Winnetka police department that framed me for those murders. The report, signed by Police Officer John Fay under Buckley's direction, used "my" words that constituted information that, of the Earth's entire population, could have been known only by the murderer or first investigators on the crime scene. I never could have prevailed against "my own" words; but murderer Biro saved my life. He, a 16-year-old, blabbed through his FBI cover to Life Without Parole. I, being much older, would have gotten lethal injection but for him. I had never in my life even heard of anybody involved in these murders. It is with good reason that the author credits the FBI for helping her write this book.

The real story, of FBI crime, is not in this book.

This book is very scary only because it's true. The detail it goes into will surprise you. It tells you exactly what they saw!

History is written by the winners........2007-08-10

PERECHODNIK.....
"The greatest skill in this vile world is to be quite when the heart is bleading and the fists tighten."

Perchodnik lacked such a skill.And his story needed telling. Needed to be told .It needs to be read.
Its ten years since I first read this book (In those 10 years I now have a 2 year old child.) I (?) could never sacrifice my wife or child as Perchodnik did.
Perchodniks history is read by the "winners" .The readers of his book are the only winners.
I (We) were never in Perchodniks shoes. His GUILT goes on and on....and each page he writes repels the reader who I assume has (Diswasher,Microvave, Saterlite t.V..ect ect......and no nazi to take away the the nagging wife and screaming child .)
I dont think I would ever want to associate with Perechodnik (over coffee)
but I guess Ive associated with worse charecters and I cant honestly say under different circumstances iam a better man.

No, you were not a murderer.......2002-05-01

Calel, suffered deadfully with the most horrendous guilt imaginable when believing he was saving his wife and child from the Otwock Treblinka bound transport in being a "Jewish Policeman" and having certain "priveleges" with the SS who in fact condemned them to death, as at the last moment a reprieve was denied them. The book is invaluable as it was written during the Nazi occupation of Poland and Calel's description of an unseen Treblinka is very detailed, proving that the Jews of the time mainly knew of their fate. Personally speaking though his mother and father wouldn't have needed the Nazis to kill them as if it were my parents i'd have finished them off myself. What vile people they were, making me realise how unselfish my own family actually are. This is a must read for anyone with a "close knit" family, you wont be able to get your head around it. I hated them. I cannot believe the War had this effect on all people be they Jews or Gentiles and that these monsters were just off a minority or there is really no hope for family's of the future if this is to be the norm.

Author Was Forced to Choose Among the Lesser of Evils.......2001-08-13

Calel Perechodnik personally experienced very little anti-Semitism previous to the Nazi invasion of Poland. He and his wife had an opportunity to move to Palestine, but opted to remain in the country of their birth. The young engineer lived a low profile life in his hometown of Otwock, and expected the lives of Jews to only improve as the overall Polish culture turned more secular. Calel respected his Jewish traditions, but perceived himself as primarily a cosmopolitan man who took organized religion with a huge grain of salt. Everything, however, dramatically changed for the worse once the Nazis became the occupying power of Poland. The anti-Semitism of the Roman Catholic majority thereafter ceased being dormant and subtle, and many of these ordinary citizens became vile monsters. Virtually overnight they treated their Jewish friends and neighbors as akin to vermin requiring elimination.

The author attempts to save his wife and young daughter by becoming a ghetto policeman. The German Nazis cynically realized that Jewish men could best keep their fellow human beings under control. False hopes were conveyed to the Jews promising that their situation would be secure if only they cooperated. "Jews perished first of all because they didn't realize in time what level German cruelty and barbarism would reach," added the author. The 27 year old Perechodnik is forced to choose the less of evils. Ultimately, his family is not spared and the author is trapped in an environment where treachery, greed, and murder are the norm. Perechodnik's chronicle is not easy reading. It is a moral duty, and not in the least bit pleasurable. The reader will constantly be challenged to dwell upon the horrific choices of Perechodnik. The awkward question of how we would behave under similar circumstances is inevitable.

There are a few other books mandating your legitimate interest. Only a few months ago, the Holocaust scholar Jan T. Gross released his superb work "Neighbors" which deals with similar atrocities committed in the Polish town of Jedwabne. Peter Wyden's "Stella" published in 1992 concerns a young Jewish woman who for purely selfish reasons betrayed her friends to the Nazis. Only the very thin veneer of civilization separates us from barbarism. Thus, we are obligated not to ignore the unpleasant truths about the recorded depths of human depravity. Increasing our knowledge betters our chances of curtailing future horrors.

Important Document.......2001-06-28

When I read Perechodnik's book years ago, I was profoundly moved by the experiences of the writer in the war years. Having just travelled to Germany and seen some concentration camps, I started reading avidly on the Holocaust and the experiences of survivors and perpetrators. The poignant title of the book was the thing that caught my eye and it remains one of the most startling and powerful accounts of the evil that took place in WWII. It is amazing that this first-hand account survived and I wish it was as highly circulated and read as Anne Frank's diary. Perechodnik's account lets us into the sacrifces one has to make in extreme situations and the guilt he feels throughout the war for abandoning his wife and kid entreats us. A harrowing experience. Let us never forget the humanity in us.

Personal note: the most nightmarish book I have ever read........1996-11-06

This is not a review, only a personal note. I read the book in its original Polish edition. And having read a number of books on Holocaust and supposed Polish participation in it I just expected some new information on this subject. But this first hand account of what happened to the Otwock Jews and of barbaric behaviuor of Poles from Otwock cannot be more persuasive on the existence of common guilt of the Polish nation for not fighting Holocaust and what's more for taking part in it. Let's not jugde the caught by the horrible times "policeman" His writing stops beating of your heart. After one long evening of reading I went to sleep and had the worst nightmare of my life: I was put into a transport to Treblinka
