Indispensable for those who like to get off the beaten path.......1997-05-15
This guidebook is unique! It provides maps of short and medium hikes you can take throughout France, complete with details on transportation, lodging and dining in the area. It differs from ordinary guidebooks in that it's geared to the person who enjoys being outdoors and wants to see both beautiful countryside and historic areas as well. The maps are first-rate, unlike many walking books, and each chapter on an area includes an interesting history and overview. I highly recommend this book, even if you are not an avid hiker. Even one of these walks will probably be the highlight of your vacation

Book Description
Have you successfully executed a tax-deferred exchange of property? Or have you heard of tax-deferred exchanging but don't really understand how it can work for you? Either way, you'll find answers to your exchange questions in Principles of Tax-deferred Exchanging. When a taxpayer sells an asset that has been held for business or investment purposes, capital gains taxes are due and payable. There are two kinds of taxable gain: the "appreciation" that the property has earned while owned by the taxpayer (roughly the difference between the original purchase price and the sales price) and the "recapture of depreciation" (the repayment of depreciation deductions previously taken by the taxpayer). However, the Internal Revenue Code allows a taxpayer to defer, or delay, the payment of all capital gains taxes if the property is exchanged for other business or investment property and the taxpayer re-invests all cash proceeds in the replacement property. Your first thought may be: how can I find someone to trade properties with me? The good news is that modern exchanging does not require the taxpayer to find another person with whom to swap. With the use of a Qualified Intermediary, the taxpayer can transfer property to any buyer, acquire new property from any seller, and get the same tax treatment as if he or she had swapped properties with one other person. It's one of the few areas of the tax code that is new and improved! The U.S. Treasury Department provides regulations, or rules, which expand on the Internal Revenue Code and provide many of the nuts and bolts methods of complying with that Code for taxpayers and professionals. In 1991, the regulations that specifically address tax-deferred exchanging under Code Section 1031 were dramatically changed to provide detailed rules for the documentation and execution of exchanges. Any book on exchanging published prior to the adoption of those rules in 1991 does not include these many rules and guidelines. First published in 1996 and updated in 1997 to include The Taxpayer Relief Act of 1997, Principles of Tax-deferred Exchanging does include all those rules and regulations, if you want to read them. But mostly it speaks plain English on how to successfully execute a tax-deferred exchange.

this information saved us a lot of legal work and had excellent ideas for complicated exchanges.
Book Description
A startling reassessment of Hitler's aims and motivations, Frederic Spotts's Hitler and the Power of Aesthetics is an adroitly argued and highly original work that provides the key to a fuller understanding of the Third Reich. Spotts, author of the distinguished Bayreuth: A History of the Wagner Festival, convincingly demonstrates that unlike the traditional biographical view that Hitler was an unperson who had no life outside of politics, Hitler's interest in the arts was as intense as his racismand that he used the arts to disguise the heinous crimes that were the means to fulfilling his ends.
Customer Reviews:
Aesthetic Beauty.......2007-10-09
One of the hardest things as historians is to try and get into someone's head. The Book Hitler and the Power of Aesthetics do this but in away that other people have not tried. The book looks at Hitler from artist view point and sees Hitler from a different view which people has not looked at before. The person who decides to read this book will also learn how Aesthesis and be a powerful tool used by man. The book is now being sold at a very good price and I give it my personal seal of approval!
What references?.......2006-06-18
There is an incomplete list of sources for photographs and sketches based on page numbers in the Acknowledgements section of this book. The photographs and sketches are not individually numbered. I also think the references are unsatisfactory. For example, the author makes a number of assertions about a boyhood friend of Hitler in the Introduction but there is no background material to support these 'facts'. The book is interesting for its shift in focus (aesthetics) but there is an impression of sloppiness that affects credibility in my opinion.
Brilliant, necessary, disturbing, and unique.......2005-09-08
If there is any justice in the world, Spotts' book will go a long way toward eradicating from popular consciousness the facile descriptions of Hitler as not much more than a cross between a risible, Chaplin-esque, comic book character and an insane, incarnate demon.
Part of the first notion of Hitler includes the idea that he ought to be dismissed as a failed, lousy artist. As Spott points out, the truth is that Nazism, like all self-styled utopianisms, was something like a gigantic project in aesthetics using people rather than pigments or plastics, and control and murder rather than downstrokes and glazing - and Hitler was the artist behind that (very popular for some years in Germany) project; he therefore must be taken seriously as an artist in this sense (obviously a grotesque, genocidal one).
As Spotts notes, even his hatred of Jews emerges from this context: the Jews are "ruining all art" by embracing atonalism, cubism, jazz, dadaism, etc., as well as ruining all life by embracing "Bolshevism". But in his mind, there doesn't seem to be much difference there: Picasso, Marx, Alban Berg - all the same. Since, in Hitler's view, art can't be separated from culture, and culture can't be separated from the state, and the state can't be separated from life itself, the eradication of the Jews becomes, in Hitler's mind, nothing less than a matter of national survival, or, strangely, to say the same thing, the artistically appropriate choice.
Spotts does a good job of underscoring another aspect of all this by calling attention to the seeming homoeroticism in Hitler's taste, particularly as it expresses itself toward the human being: at bottom (pun intended), Hitler preferred, aesthetically, buff blond males with blue eyes, i.e., "Nordic" types. The Jews, in addition to being greedy, "Bolsheviks", destroyers of art/culture/life, etc., just...looked "wrong". And so in this sense, in Hitler's mind, ridding the proper-looking race of these improper-looking portions of it was as obviously a necessary decision as would be getting rid of a "wrong" piece of furniture cluttering up an otherwise beautiful living room. (Spotts even includes a contemporary German cartoon caricaturing the physical features of a "typical" Jew).
But what I started out to say was this. Spotts surveys how Hitler very consciously used colour, shape, rhetoric, size, proportion, angle, material, sound, light, symbol, rhythm, story, pageantry, texture, surprise, music, fire, sculpture, formation, etc., to, quite literally, achieve a truly terrifying degree of control over the minds of his subjects, even as a conversion tool over those who had resisted him. (Spotts describes how awed even American visitors were by the Nuremberg rallies.)
And page by page, one begins increasingly to get a sense of what it would have been like, to be a human being, subject to all the mental and emotional strengths and weaknesses we are, living in a country (our world, for all purposes) which only a year or two before had been totally chaotic and depressed...and then to be stirred, roused, when that world around us begins to change, prompted to feel different, pleasurable things, think different, exciting thoughts, and in the end, perform different - and ultimately - indescribably horrific actions. In every way, we are preyed upon by the mesmeric, sick genius of a man who was rejected by the art school in Vienna, and who sought his revenge for this affront by dominating human psychology through all those elements I mentioned above more totally than perhaps any other "artist" of the 20th century.
I saw a BBC documentary a couple of weeks ago, in which several elderly Germans candidly recalled with fondness Hitler's early years. What they said they missed most were the euphoric feelings they had, going to the pageants and rallies, seeing the flags, hearing the speeches and the music, those feelings of belonging, meaning, "specialness". And for the first time, reading Spotts' book, in a really disturbing way, I could imagine what that might have been like, imagine that I might have been just as susceptible to the manipulator as millions of Germans had been. For the first time, how the whole thing could have happened seemed imaginable. Scary.
Bravo to Spotts for his brilliant and disturbing book. I would love to see him now do a documentary on this, using real footage.
Highly recommended.
Hitler as artist, Germany as his divine canvas.......2005-08-20
It's easy to accept a good vs. evil mentality. It simplifies things a lot. However, this book is amazing in how it exposes you to a very different way of viewing the man Adolf Hitler. To see and understand his master plan without the barrage of foaming mouths calling him satan is truly a reason to check this book out, if only for the pure intellectual curiosity to understand. Destruction comes with every act of creation. Though he instigated the destructive waste of humanity that was WW2 by invading and retaking the part of Poland that was stolen from Germany after WW1, after which England and France officially declared war to begin WW2, he intended to create a beautiful Germany and rid the nation of all that was base. Hitler apparently observed, enough to his conviction, that Jewish people and Communists were the chief promotors of this degeneracy, the modern artists and modern art gallery owners. As an analogy, it is as if Hitler was simply a man on the street who saw a bunch of hoodlums destroying a beautiful sculpture or work of art, and he wasn't going to stand by and let it be destroyed. Instead, he would destroy those hoodlums and resurrect not only a new beautiful work of art but an entire nation filled with the aesthetic ideal, of people, of architecture, of music, of art. It may be Hitler's aesthetic ideal, but a lot of people with good taste share it as well, and it's hard to admit, but there has to be something fishy going on to enable artists such as Jackson Pollock and Franz Kline to become famous. Neat book to own, nice cover also.
The Medium is the Message.......2005-03-25
Some years ago I thought I had overdosed on WWII books and swore I would never read another. I had also felt that something was missing from all those accounts of Hitler's Germany: Just how did he do it--what was the attraction? This book finally answers that question. Hitler was a great artist, and Germany was his stage. His art was a series of spectacles: pageantries of flags, parades, uniforms, massed formations of men, and skillful oratory--all surrounded by searchlights reaching towards the sky like luminous Roman columns. I can see now how so many people were mesmerized by his show. That's a warning for us today--pay more attention to the message and less to the medium.

Book Description
If you enjoy this book, you should really give the credit to my wife. Absent her encouragement, it might never have been written. She'd listened to my Meadville stories for years, finally urging cheerfully, "You know, you really should write a book."
So I wrote two other books. She loved them both. But they weren't the book she wanted. I was skeptical. "Who would want to read a book about me growing up?"
"Well, your grandchildren, among others."
My initial efforts were tentative at best: a bit of story here, a fragment there, until finally (partly because of the writing itself?) it began to sink in that she had a point. Our stories are more important than we realize. The very telling of them summons back to consciousness not just the places where our pasts unfolded but the people who inhabited them, places and people that shaped who we are and, to some extent, who we may yet become. The more deeply I probed those far-off memories, the more brightly my childhood town lit up around me, and the larger became the company of shadows who gathered around my chair, looking over my shoulder and prodding me to remember.
Because places change, we no longer see ourselves in them-until we revisit them as they were, and see ourselves again as we were. Maybe, I thought, reading my story will help others to explore their own, to find out how their hometowns, and the people who lived there, matter in ways they'll not grasp unless they go there.
One other consideration drove the writing. Stories deserve to be told well. Forty years of preaching, teaching and writing have taught me the importance of that. If I have done nothing else here, I have tried to tell my stories in such a way that their beauty and fun-and their sad mortality-remain unmistakably present. How well I succeeded I'll leave for you to judge.
Customer Reviews:
A beautiful story, beautifully presented..........2003-10-24
Don Skinner's new memoir of growing up in northwest Pennsylvania in the 1930s and '40s is is a must-have for folks with a small-town upbringing, those with a passing interest in community life of half a century ago, or anyone looking for a lovely, comforting, satisfying book. This chronicle is often laugh-out-loud funny, sometimes throat-catchingly poignant, and always vividly and expertly presented.
The most striking aspect this book is Skinner's incredible imagery: whether he is describing an unanticipated trip down Main Street attached by his snowsuit to the bumper of a Model T Ford, or an impoverished African-American man plucking lumps of coal from the floodwaters of a creek, or a squabble with his sister and brothers to claim the cream at the top of the morning milk-bottle, the reader is instantly and charmingly transported into young Don's world.
While the greater part of the book describes a gentle community and a child's life in a loving, close-knit family, Skinner doesn't shy away from tackling more troubling issues, both personal and societal: his father's untimely death when Skinner was only seven; the failure of the local educational system to recognize and address his learning disability; the years of World War II, when an unbearable number of the town's sons and daughters left and never returned; the tacit subculture of racism; the simmering anti-Catholic bias of some of the community's Protestants. This is by no means a view through rose-colored spectacles, but Skinner treats his subject with wisdom, sagacity, and affection. A very enjoyable read.

Customer Reviews:
Author Review Update.......2006-12-12
Published in 1998, the 4 model portfolios in the book, and the methodology for constructing them, held up extremely well from 1998 - 2006. Most of the advice and strategies are long-term in nature and not effected by changes in tax and pension legislation.
Needs to be updated........2005-08-05
The material covered is very well done, however being published in 1998 there are a lot of changes to Social Security and the tax laws that need to be included in a book such as this. In the authors' defense they do provide references for obtaining the latest updated material, but it's a bit of a hassle to have to test the suggestions in this book against the revised material. Of course, a retired person should have 'fun' doing exactly that!
Excellent for the new retiree.......2000-03-24
Just retired and this book answered alot of questions. I always felt that I could manage my investments by myself in retirement. This book makes me realize that I may eventually have to go to a financial planner for help.
Outstanding Retirement Guide.......1999-12-26
As a financial advisor, I've personally purchased over 100 books to give to my retired clients as gifts. They love it. This book is an excellent guide to retirement finance. It covers almost every concern known to any retiree, for example--how much of your portfolio should be used for income? Their logic and reasoning makes it simple for anyone to understand the economics of living off your portfolio during retirement. The case studies are great--real life examples of life changing financial decisions. Thank you Ron and Murray for such a wonderful gift of your knowledge.
Magnetic Reading.......1999-12-09
Once I started reading this book I realized how much thought has to go into the retirement proccess. This book starts you off in the right place and takes you through the proccess in exactly the right order. I found the book very easy to comprehend and the charts were very helpfull to illustrate the points that were being made. I have read other books on the subject of retirement and I found that this book is very comprehensive and easy to follow.

(3.5)A paean to a genuine WWII hero.......2004-08-12
Recently, World War II veterans have been touted as "The Greatest Generation", but as more of them pass into history, the survivors are concerned, in a constantly changing world, that their deeds will be forgotten. At the time, everyone believed that the Second World War was "the war to end all wars", that never again would such numbers of young men be sent across the sea to fight for their country.
Unfortunately, since 1945 we have known conflict in Korea, Vietnam and Iraq. These engagements have each reaped generational tolls, but none with such clear distinction and clarity of purpose; the soldiers who served in WWII produced innumerable heroes, one of who is memorialized in Camel red.
An outstanding officer, with dreams of a future in professional football, Larry Heron of Hopedale, Massachusetts, was severely wounded and disfigured in an act of heroism that saved his men, but changed the course of his life. Heron was only 26-years old and endured over 26 operations to repair his face, but his eyesight was destroyed. A lesser man would have courted bitterness and self-pity, but this was no ordinary man. His life was lived painfully, but honorably, raising a family and contributing to the welfare of his fellow veterans in the local community.
A newlywed when he was wounded, Heron's beloved wife was pivotal to his recovery. Even when she viewed his horribly disfigured face for the first time, Azelia never flinched, steadfast in her unconditional love for her husband. Before Larry's tragic disfigurement, the young couple exemplified the American family in the 1940's, grounded in their love of family, patriotism and religious faith. Equally important to Heron's continuing progress were the groups who offered both physical and emotional support: his fellow soldiers, the appreciative community of Hopedale and the tireless physicians who performed the surgeries to reconstruct Heron's face.
Heron leaves a proud legacy, a man who stood for the best of his country, gravely wounded, fighting insurmountable odds to survive his injuries and take back his life. Certainly, Heron is one of his generation's exemplary heroes. In his writing debut, Gregory David Page does justice to Larry Heron's memory, a paean to a heroic life, well-lived. Luan Gaines/2004.

Book Description
The Red Toothed Camel was born at sea aboard the State Ship Deliverance, weathering a hurricane. He's a young prince--all boy--who grows into a fine man, in spite of himself and the consequences of his yearly misadventures, which he luckily survives, at least for our behalf. His eventual purpose, you'll see, is to be the catalyst for a social commentary, which Helmet, our author, weaves for your sake and the sake of the Camel's own children. There is a slight blurring between fiction and allegory and humor and satire, but its not meant to confuse; its offered to help you take off your blinders, if you will. The brief narrative herein covers a long, long life, which is but an exaggeration to help the reader find more than the immediate.

Book Description
In selecting software systems, the objective is to choose the vendor(s) which best meet(s) the institution's requirements and priorities. Nonprofits have their own sets of priorities, and different types of nonprofit organizations have different kinds of requirements and priorities that their software must meet. If you are overwhelmed by the number and variety of software products on the market that purport to meet the needs of your nonprofit organization, this software guide is ready to help you narrow down the field and come up with a cost-effective decision and a product that will work for you.
This book was developed as a resource guide for not-for-profit (NFP) organizations and associations to review and select accounting and administrative information systems. This software guide specifically addresses different needs of different types of nonprofits: state and local government agencies, religious organizations, charitable organizations, foundations, trade associations, and schools and universities. It reviews the major accounting software packages designed for nonprofit organizations, and evaluates them feature by feature, and allows the reader to compare the systems to the needs of his organization.
In addition to the reviews of the individual software products, clear tables and charts make it easy to compare product features of different packages. Selecting Software for Non-Profit Organizations and Trade Associations is designed to reduce the time and costs associated with selecting software that is most suitable for your particular company. It is a minor investment in a major piece of your organization's growth.
