Book Description
Nearly half a century after then-Senator John F. Kennedy was awarded the Pulitzer Prize for Profiles in Courage, his masterful portrait of American heroes, the words politician and courage are rarely uttered in the same breath. But, as this celebration of modern political bravery amply demonstrates, there are countless examples of heroism among todays elected officials. Profiles in Courage for Our Time pays tribute to 13 such heroes, each a recipient of the prestigious Profile in Courage award. The essays authors are as noteworthy as their subjects: Anna Quindlen writes about Governor James Florios passing of the strictest gun control law in the nation; Al Hunt details James Feingold and John McCains efforts to reform political finance.

JFK , Carl Elliot.......2006-12-29
President John F. Kennedy:
John F. Kennedy said "US will never start a war. We do not want war. We do not expect war. This generation of Americans has had enough - more than enough - of hate and expression".
JFK profile of courage was a suggestion of massive reform: 1. Major tax reform starting with the cutting of taxes which benefited low-income households 2. The revision of the capital gains laws would free capital investment and encourage economic growth. 3. The removal of tax privileges that favored mineral companies, such as, oil 4. A migration from a floating currency back too the gold standard, as means to control inflation and deflation and the printing of debt free money. 5. The dismantling of the Federal Reserve 6. Tighter budgets policies to be implemented that significantly reducing military spending. 7. Accepting the conclusion, South Vietnam war was their war and affective immediately the withdrawal of US troops from the region.
JFK wrote in his book, "In whatever arena of life one may meet the challenge of courage, whatever may be the sacrifices he faces if he follows his conscience-the loss of his friends, his fortune, his contentment, even the esteem of his fellow men-each man must decide for himself the course he will follow. The stories of past courage can define that ingredient-they can teach, they can offer hope, they can provide inspiration. But they cannot supply courage itself. For this, each man must look into his soul."
Carl Elliott:
Congressman Carl Elliott from Alabama fought for equal opportunity in education and was redistricted out of his congressional seat in retaliation for his principled stand.
"Elliott fought for equal opportunity in education and was redistricted out of his congressional seat in retaliation for his principled stand.
What Elliot cared about was "seeing that folks got what they deserved, good or bad; seeing that the less fortunate weren't denied at least the same opportunity to get an education, earn a decent income, have a home and raise a family as people who happened to be in better circumstances."
Elliott believe the Congressman should not just look out for himself and profit from monies from special interest groups, but that the Congressman should "mind the store" and hear what the American people's problem were.
In 1958 Elliot and Senator Lister Hill were key champions of the $900 million National Defense Education Act, known as the Hill-Elliott Act. 40,000 grant-in-aid college scholarships were proposed with the aim of producing scientist, engineers, mathematicians, and linguist.
Elliot realized that if he took the wrong stand on race, he would be out of office. "White Southerners in Congress were under ferocious pressure to take their stand with the segregationist of Dixie." Elliot did not side with the segregationist telling one reporter, "Anybody who had a grain of sense knew that blacks had to be given their rights. The question was, how were we going to do it. Then the question locally was, what can we do and still live with our own particular situation?" Elliot helped sponsored and get ratified the aid-to-education bill and received strong opposition from racist Alabaman groups. Elliot disliked when Freedom riders and other civil right workers were attacked in Birmingham and Montgomery and felt repelled by the violence. By 1963, Elliot and new governor George Wallace were at different sides of the fence; Wallace publicly calling for segregation now and Elliot saying, "George, don't piss on my leg". Later Wallace would stand defiantly in the door of the University of Alabama in "a vain effort to forestall the Kennedy's administration plan to enforce the law ensuring integration". Elliot public spoke against JFKs assumption that the civil rights laws would calm racial turbulence believing the civil right laws were "too much to soon, and hoped the Wallace madness would pass away, having faith less confrontational steps toward integration could then be taken". In 1964, the civil right law was passed under the Johnson administration. Elliot believed the law was the law and it should be obeyed. In 1965, after "bloody Sunday" in Selma, state troopers and a civilian posse lead by Sheriff Jim Clark attacked civil rights demonstrators and Lyndon Johnson sent a bill to congress that ensured that black Americans could vote.
Elliot decided to run for governor. Elliot's enemies, including the Ku Klux Klan scrawled, "never, never, never". Martin Luther came out for Flowers hurting Elliots chances for governor recalls Elliot, "I didn't stand a ghost chance after that day." Elliot found himself a half million dollars in debt. Elliot's political career came to an end, "I had pretty much become a political ... untouchable and I know that had to hard for my children to see, no matter how much they believed in me and the things I stood for."
Every amercian should read it .......2005-02-01
During our time one lonley man steped up to the plate to take on polotics and america as we know it. If you are intrested into polotics or Amercian history this book has it all and maby if you read it you might become class President just like I did.
Some profiles better than others.......2005-01-06
The "profiles" in this update to JFK's classic, are varied in both their subjects and their presentation. These accounts are not uniform in quality. Most stirring are those with a personal flavor such as Bob Woodward's profile of Gerald Ford, wherein we see a hidden profile of Woodward as well. However, others seem either too detached or tediously narrative, such as Michael Daly's "The Irish Peacemakers" which outlines the alphabet soup of the political/religious strife in Ireland, but does little to connect the overall themes of courage to anything outside the situation.
It is a good read, but not all the selections hold interest. I'd recommend particular excerpts for good classroom reading. I also commend the acknowledgement of politicians, leaders, and activists on both local and global levels.
Inspirational.......2003-05-19
This book is a compilation of short biographies of the winners of the Profile in Courage Award. It is a group effort, being the work of numerous historians and writers. I found these stories inspiring because many of them illuminate political leaders who took actions they knew would be detrimental to their careers. Yes, most of the award winners have been on the liberal side, but personally I find that a healthy antidote to the sort of "leadership" the mainstream media prefers to applaud these days. And don't forget good old Gerald Ford, whose biography (by Bob Woodward, no less) eloquently makes his case for his pardoning of Richard Nixon. Many readers will disagree with some of the choices for the awards and with some of the conclusions of the authors of these biographies. Nevertheless Profiles in Courage For Our Time is an inspiring effort meant to remind us of the highest qualities we should expect from our leadership.
Essays Against Democracy.......2003-03-12
On page 3 C Kennedy defines "courage" as "sacrificing their own future, and that of their families, to do what they believed was right for our country". I think it is hypocrisy to apply it to Edmund G Ross (supported a President against Congress), or Gerald R Ford (covered up a President who was virtually impeached). Both can be said to have obstructed justice and the lawful popular will. So why was James Florio added to this list? Neither Florio or Ford have suffered from their actions; losing an election isn't a sacrifice, its part of political life.
When Florio ran for Governor in 1989 he promised not to raise the sales and income taxes. He not only reneged, he extended the sales tax to items previously exempt! The authors take a perverse pride in these actions, but cannot (or dare not) explain why. It is regressive and reactionary to have a sales tax so much higher than the income tax.
Florio was a Congressman from Camden NJ, a once important industrial city that is now a stripped junker of a city. Page 72 shows another dishonest statement about NJ. The Colony of NJ was controlled by the large landowners, then the railroads and other powerful corporations. What Governor has NOT been a servant of the Corporations since the Civil War?
A Quindlen uses an anecdote (p.72) to justify Florio's law, but never mentions the special interest forces and the money used to pay for this law. She does admit the most objectionable feature was the confiscation of legally owned guns. The Federal Constitution forbids ex post facto laws! The rejection by the courts underlines the lack of democracy in NJ. Judges were never popularly elected since NJ was a Colony. The loss of the Senate and Assembly in 1991 seemed mainly due to the sales and income tax increases. This was the correct political response.
A Quindlen does an incompetent job in writing of the history of gun prohibition (p.76-77). Those "opinion polls" merely reflect the wishes of those who paid for the desired results. The referendums held in Massachusetts and California overwhelmingly rejected gun prohibition. Since 1987 thirty-three states passed "right to carry" laws. Page 78 lists the latest tactic of gun prohibitionists: present it as a police safety measure. They use politically appointed police chiefs; some do it for the money.
On page 80 Quindlen finally tells of the Florio taxes His "skill at taking his case to the people" (p.81) failed miserably once Florio had to talk about a subject most people were familiar with. his defeat by a rich dilettante shows the efficiency of political machines in running a scandal-free candidate (just like Woodrow Wilson). The loss of "grass roots" by "Hands Across NJ" shows what happens to a politically naive movement that lacks a competent cadre of leaders.
Florio's "sour grapes" comments on "the influence of money in the process" recalls similar whines from Bill Bradley, whose Senate law started to tax Social Security. The failure of Whitman to act on campaign promises is not new (p.86); she was the latest puppet of the Republican machine.

Who's Who Syria.......2006-11-05
This is a valuable reference tool for those who are reading or studying about Syria. It is a tool that not only helps with political, military, economic porttaits but also cultural biographies.
Syria: Hopes dashed, hopes resurgent.......2005-11-20
I cannot do this book enough justice.
Having been written by a young Syrian, makes it all the more relevant; as it has become regrettably customary--in this iconoclastic day and age--for young Middle-Easterners, to distance themselves from reverence for (or even simple interest in) their own heritage and history.
The bleak present and dark future--which are the direct descendants of decades of tyrannical, despotist, absolutist and opportunist rulers and forms of government--have not only left their imprints on the psyche of many young Arabs (especially Syrians); but also created a wide chasm between them and an active interest in their modern history.
The author of this book defies these two hurdles, marvelously escaping one of the tumors infecting young Arabs today: apathy.
In this book, the author lucidly brings to life the biographies of Syrian personalities (politicians, but also socialites, artists and women and men of literature, thinkers and reformers, economists and educators) through an astonishingly original, astute and concise narrative that not only focuses onto heroic deeds or great contributions to Syrian history--but also manages to paint a human portrait of them, by vividly portraying cultural nuances, interesting trivia, and funny anecdotes.
This book makes for a riveting read, and is a must-have for anyone seeking to discover (or re-discover) Syria; a Syria of hope, of human promise, and potential--in stark contrast with the prevalent image of Syria in the media today.
Finally, Jamil Mardam Bey (Prime Minister of Syria in the 1940s--and quoted in the foreword of the book) said it best: "...all is not lost."
A Must for all Students of Syrian History.......2005-11-06
Sami Moubayed's book is indispensible for students of Syria and all those who are interested in its modern history. It is a work of love by one of Syria's leading journalists and historians. As advertised, "In Steel & Silk you will meet the nationalists who led the independence struggle against the French. You will meet the statesmen who made Syria a central player in the Middle East. You will meet poets, painters, dramatists and thinkers as well as diplomats, journalists, and civil servants. Over 160 black & white photos. Includes a workshop for students, journalists, and researchers that includes an annotated timeline of 20th Century Syria, and lists of Syrian officials since the fall of the Ottomans in 1918.
I have had it on my desk for only a few months now and have already refered to it many times to find out more about the men and women who made Syria. Joshua Landis, author of SyriaComment.com

Book Description
In Fireweed, Gerda Lerner, a pioneer and leading scholar in women's history, tells her story of moral courage and commitment to social change with a novelist's skill and a historian's command of context. Lerner's memoir focuses on the formative experiences that made her an activist for social justice before her academic career began. The child of a well-to-do Viennese Jewish family, she was still a teenager when a fascist regime came to power in 1934, and she became involved in the underground resistance movement. The Nazi takeover of Austria cast her into prison, then forced her and her family into exile; she alone was able to leave Europe.
Once in the United States, she experienced the harshness of the Depression and despair over the fate of her family. Still, she persisted in adapting to the new culture and to becoming a writer. Here she met and married her life-long partner, Carl Lerner, a film editor and director. Together they become deeply involved in left-wing activities, from struggling to unionize the film industry and resisting the blacklist in Hollywood to community organizing for peace, for an interracial civil rights movement, and for better schools in New York City. Lerner insists that her decades of grassroots organizing largely account for the theoretical insights she was later able to bring to the development of women's history.
In Fireweed, Lerner presents her life in the context of the major historical events of the twentieth century and the repression of dissent. Hers is a gripping story about surviving hardship and summoning the courage to live according to one's convictions.
Customer Reviews:
A HISTORIAN'S PERSONAL VIEW OF 20TH CENTURY CRISES.......2002-07-14
Gerda Lerner, one of our most important historians, has written a magnificently honest and perceptive autobiography. She takes us through her youth in Vienna, her imprisonment by the Nazis, her escape to the United States where she married, raised children and built a new life, her years in Hollywood and New York, and her experiences as a radical during the McCarthy period. It is an engrossing, very human story that will touch and enlighten all who read it. We can only hope that Lerner will follow it with a volume that relates the story of her years as a historian who helped to create modern women's history.
Fireweed.......2002-07-13
An honest, courageous and illuminating account of a radical life. Also a reminder that our current troubles are not unique. Lerner's account of the persecution of members of the Communist Party USA during the 1950's, the abrogation of their civil rights and the threat to their livelihood should be a warning to us today.

getting to know my director of nursing.......2005-08-23
Miriam Lundgren was my Director of Nursing at Methodist Hospital School of Nursing from 1962-1965. A fellow student gave me her autobiography a couple years ago. I thumbed through it then relegated it to my overflowing bookcase to read "later." Well, later is now because in a few weeks I'll be attending my 40th class reunion from Methodist and Mrs. Lundgren hopes to attend. "I'd better read her book," I joked with the friend who had given it to me. "Oh, it's a great book! I loved it" she replied.
I'm about halfway through Then Sings My Soul now and instead of reading it out of a sense of obligation, I'm thoroughly enjoying it and find it difficult to put down. Of course, it helps that I know the author. Or maybe I should say, I thought I knew her. I'm finding out all sorts of wonderful and interesting things about her life. We students saw her as the epitome of professional nursing - starched uniform, crisp organdy cap, calm demeanor. We were proud that she was also "the first woman ordained in the Methodist Church in South Jersey." We had no idea that she had, in a sense, "saved" our struggling hospital nursing program, that she had a seriously ill husband at home, that she felt inadequate for the tasks she had assumed.
Not only did this autobiography help me to know Miriam Lundgren better, it inspired and challenged me. So many memories, poetry from the depths of her heart, humble admissions, pictures of places I once knew.
I'm hoping Mrs. Lundgren brings copies of her book to our reunion in October. I'd recommed it not only to my fellow "students" but to anyone who wants to be inspired and challenged to live a life as full and rewarding as hers.

Customer Reviews:
Good, but I've read better..........2005-01-20
This is a good book for a great cause: getting and staying out of debt. However, after reading it, I liked Dave Ramsey's Money Makeover and Financial Peace University MUCH better - more thorough, great ideas, and fabulous examples of how a little money can grow w/ time - which this book, CM, is lacking.
Solid Advice, Albeit Very Basic.......2005-01-19
This is a good, solid, book covering the "basics" of money management. It can be said that Mary Hunt is just reiterating philosophies of money management that have been preached over the decades, if not centuries. Better, more comprehensive, readings include "The Millionaire Next Door", "Your Money Or Your Life", "The Complete Tightwad Gazette", and "The Richest Man In Babylon."
That being said, this book did introduce me to one innovative idea of which I have incorporated into my financial arsenol. It's what called the "Freedom Account". The Freedom Account is a fantastic tool devised by Hunt to manage payment of irregular,
non-monthly bills. The concept is not new, but Hunt's system is definitely the best I've ever come across.
My philosophy on reading books has always been that if I can get just one great new idea, then the investment in time and money is worth it. I can assure you that if you decide to buy this book, the "Freedom Account" system alone is well worth the investment.
If you're broke or having money problems, buy this book now!.......2003-04-08
Has worrying about money or paying your bills ever kept you up at night?
Me, too. Until I found this book.
About 7 years ago, our family was suffering from unbelievable money problems. Depressed and confused, I decided to stop by the bookstore and browse the personal finance section. There was only one problem. I didn't have twenty or thirty dollars to buy money management advice. I decided to get Mary's book and could not believe how many great examples and strategies she gave for reducing debt.
By following Mary's instructions, our family quickly began reducing our debt and wiped out almost $ 20,000 of credit card bills within a few years.
Her book is my money "Bible" and like scriptures in a holy work, I have highlighted paragraphs on almost every page that give insights into a subject that had always been beyond my control.
This book saved my marriage and brought me peace.
I highly recommend it. . . to everyone.
Very good.......2002-12-17
I really like Mary Hunts books I find them a lot more useful than books like the tightwad gazette which is way to extreme.Mary Hunts books are full of good useful information.
Another Great Book!!!.......2002-07-25
I subscribe to Mary's CheapskateMonthly.... and highly recommend both her website and most of her books. I have read and reread the books of hers that I own, of which this is one. If you're having finacial difficulties, get this book and subscribe to her newsletter - you can do this online or through the mail. I swear it's been the best money I've ever spent. And I have actually started to see a difference in my finances.
