All stock-market investors embrace the motto "Buy low, sell high." Few act accordingly, however, for to do so would require that we go against the crowd, buying stocks that are out of favor and selling Wall Street's darlings. Powerful psychological forces prevent us from pursuing a contrarian investment strategy, although it consistently beats the market, according to David Dreman, a seasoned money manager and long-time columnist for Forbes magazine. One of the Street's best-known and most articulate contrarians, Dreman has updated his 1982 investment classic, Contrarian Investment Strategies, using recent research on investor psychology. His revised book combines proven techniques for selecting undervalued stocks with fresh insights on how to defy, and thereby profit from, the popular fears or enthusiasms of the moment.

Dreman pays only cursory attention to a company's business fundamentals in deciding whether to invest in it. Instead he looks for stocks trading at below-market multiples of per-share earnings, cash flow, book value, or dividend yield. Historically, Dreman claims, stocks that are cheap by any of these measures have tended to outperform the market average, although this is disputed by those who believe the stock market is efficient and therefore impossible to beat except by accident. Dreman devotes many pages to debunking their research. He offers a new refinement of his low-price strategy, which involves picking the cheapest stocks within industries, to create a diversified, contrarian portfolio.

Contrarian Investment Strategies: The Next Generation is full of practical and provocative advice, but some of its most interesting passages delve into the abstruse findings of cognitive psychology. This research has proven that we are woefully inadequate as intuitive statisticians. Interpreting data to make predictions about the probability of future events, we consistently make the same mistakes. For example, we exaggerate the likelihood that current trends will continue, even when they are historically exceptional. (Logic dictates that trends are more likely to regress toward the mean.) This fallacy explains why most Wall Street insiders were gloomiest about stocks in 1981, after six years of falling prices, just before the beginning of the greatest bull market ever. Is today's widespread optimism among investors a reason for caution? Dreman thinks so.

It seems our brains are hard-wired to underperform the market. That's why few investors can keep to a contrarian approach. Dreman recommends buying stocks when prices fall, the worse the panic the better. But that requires overriding powerful instincts.

Besides reflecting Dreman's wide reading in finance, psychology, and history, his book also displays his sometimes windy and self-important writing style. At 464 pages, the book is not a quick read. But its intellectual depth and thoroughly tested advice make many other investment books look paltry and superficial by comparison. Serious, independent investors will find it rewarding. --Barry Mitzman

    Book Description

David Dreman's name is synonymous with the term "contrarian investing," and his contrarian strategies have been proven winners year after year. His techniques have spawned countless imitators, most of whom pay lip service to the buzzword "contrarian," but few can match his performance. His Kemper-Dreman High Return Fund has been the leader since its inception in 1988 -- the number one equity-income fund among all 208 ranked by Lipper Analytical Services, Inc. Dreman is also one of a handful of money managers whose clients have beaten the runaway market over the past five, ten, and fifteen years.

Now, as the longest bull market in the history of the stock market winds down, there is increasing volatility and a great deal of uncertainty. This is the climate that tests the mettle of the pros, the worries of the average investor, and the success of David Dreman's brilliant new strategies for the next millennium.

Contrarian Investment Strategies: The Next Generation shows investors how to outperform professional money managers and profit from potential Wall Street panics -- all in Dreman's trademark style, which The New York Times calls "witty and clear as a silver bell." Dreman reveals a proven, systematic, and safe way to beat the market by buying stocks of good companies when they are currently out of favor. At the heart of his book is a fundamental psychological insight: investors overreact. Dreman demonstrates how investors consistently overvalue the so-called "best" stocks and undervalue the so-called "worst" stocks, and how earnings and other surprises affect the best and worst stocks in opposite ways. Since surprises are a way of life in the market, Dreman shows you how to profit from these surprises with his ingenious new techniques, most of which have been developed in the nineties. You'll learn:

Based on cutting-edge research and irrefutable statistics, David Dreman's revolutionary techniques will benefit professionals and laymen alike.

5 out of 5 stars One of the few investments books that proves its arguments.......2007-09-28

I was bummed out before I read this book- had just read A Random Walk Down Wall Street and had become a believer in a)the efficient market hypothesis and b)the inability to beat the market over the long term.

Then comes this book. Chapter by chapter, Dreman dissects efficient market arguments that I saw as fact and showed that they were folly. Dreman states that the market is not efficient because investors are many times not rational. In fact, they are predictably irrational. And then Dreman gives data to prove this. He presents research to show that investing in a certain way allows you to beat the market.

And he gives more research and data. And more, and more. Some people will complain that this is boring and overwhelming, but he does so to prove the validity of his methods. I've read many investment books, and usually an author will give his guidelines for picking stocks, with return numbers taken at a certain point in time, and holding stocks for a certain period, and maybe a few other stipulations. And in the end, I never trusted the author enough to invest any real money in his strategy.

Not so with Dreman. The wealth of research convinced me that Dremans methods were not datamining and were not limited to certain market environments.

Its the most imporant investing book I have read. Dremans method is very similiar to value investing preached by a number of other famous investors. The difference is that Dreman proves to you through his research that value investing works. Everybody addicted to Mad Money and Jim Cramer needs to give this book a peek.

3 out of 5 stars Value Investing Handbook.......2006-08-30

Dreman makes a persuasive case here that the financial experts and analysts as well as the average investor are terrible in predicting which way the stock market is going. If you want to beat the market, you need to do the opposite of everyone else, by investing in currently out-of-favor value stocks with low P/E ratios.

To his credit, Dreman correctly forecast the big market crash of 2000-2002. Published in 1998, Dreman here observed that the market of the late 90's was way overpriced and that a major correction was in the works. He was correct, although the crash was 2 years off when this was published.

His whipping boy in this book, as in almost every other investing book on the shelves, is the Efficient Market Hypothesis (EMH). But in truth, his investing strategy does not contradict EMH. In its simplest form, EMH argues that, statistically speaking, the past movements of a stock have no significant relationship to its future movements. Dreman indeed agrees with this, and the assertion has never been disproved.

Dreman has lots of fun poking fun at the assertion of EMH that investors are rational and that current stock prices reflect all known information about the company. But the claim that investors are rational is not really controversial: all it adds up to is that investors seek to maximize returns and avoid losing money. Investors may act for poor reasons, but there is always a reason for the movement of a stock. There are good and poor reasons, but those only emerge in hindsight.

Dreman also says that Beta is completely worthless as a measure of risk and returns, and that may be true for individual stocks, but for mutual funds it's very useful. The Beta for a small-cap fund will be significantly higher than a large-cap value fund, and investors are generally rewarded for taking on that risk, at least in the long run.

All but the most extreme forms of EMH accept that stocks may be undervalued or overvalued *in the short run.* In the long run, the market is in fact completely rational. If it wasn't, there would be no point in investing in the market at all, since stock movements would be completely random. And if there are temporary irrationalities in stock prices, then it follows that investors can profit from those under- or overvaluations. Some theorists argue that it's not wise to try to beat the market, but most EMH theorists advocate a value strategy identical to Dreman's. See for example Larry Swedroe's excellent "The Only Guide to a Winning Investment Strategy You'll Ever Need."

    5 out of 5 stars A must-read.......2006-08-22

I have read this book three times now, and intend to do so again. Dreman is obviously an outstanding investor, and his strategies flesh out and arguably "modernize" the techniques used by the noted fundamental investor Benjamin Graham, who was the mentor to Warren Buffett (although, I might add, this book does not emphasize the study of financial statements, which is something Benjamin Graham did in painstaking detail).

Dreman's approach is most notable because of his use of investor psychology and his forceful rejection of the efficient market hypothesis. Instead, Dreman cites any number of studies and examples to support his main thesis: investors over-react to events, and those over-reactions create opportunities for savvy investors to make money. His approach involves a two-part strategy: first, preserve capital, and second, take advantage of market over-reactions to profit. His point is that the market is like a casino, but one in which the odds can favor a knowledgeable investor. In other words, no one can guarantee that a particular stock will do well, but over time, investors who follow a contrarian strategy will outperform the market generally.

Dreman's approach to investing is notably different than much of what is considered "conventional" wisdom within the financial markets (for a good contrasting view, read "Expectations Investing" by Rappaport and Mauboussin). In particular, Dreman takes the position that experts err predictably and often, and that humans base decisions on a minute portion of the information thrown at them. In this respect, his skepticism differs notably from some other authors (example: Mauboussin in "More than What You Know").

From this, he demonstrates how buying low p/e, high yielding, low price/book, and low price/free cash flow stocks results in higher-than-average returns. Dreman shows how favored stocks tend to underperform the market, while out-of-favor companies tend to outperform. However, reappraisal can happen slowly, even glacially.

I found this book to be both enjoyable and informative, and it inspired me to read a couple books about behavioral finance (Paulos, "A Mathematician Plays the Stock Market" and Belsky and Gilovich "Why Smart People Make Big Money Mistakes and How to Correct Them").

In all, I highly recommend this book to anyone who is interested in investing. A few other recommendations (other than those listed above) include:

Klarman - "Margin of Safety" (out of print)
Whitman - "The Aggressive Convervative Investor" and "Value Investing"
Greenblatt - "You Can be a Stock Market Genius" (horrible title, great book)
Graham - "Security Analysis" and "the Intelligent Investor"

Each of these books sets forth a somewhat different approach to investing, but at the core, each of them shares a skepticism of the principals underlying the efficient market hypothesis.

4 out of 5 stars pretty good book.......2006-03-16

The author is very knowledgeable on the subject but his prose could use some improvement - its hard to read more then 1-2 hrs at a time.

5 out of 5 stars The proof is in the puddin.......2006-03-11

Dreman does it again by reconfirming the findings he first penned before the huge bull market kicked off in the early eighties. Somehow through that whole era of wild dealmaking and internet pyrotechnics the strategies remained valid. Not only does the author make the often dry data highly readible with his
wit and humor, but I'll add that David Dreman's position as one of the great contributors to investment theory and literature is tremendously undervalued.

5 out of 5 stars BELIVE IN MAGIC!.......2007-07-11

I am absolutely blown away by this book. Definitely on my "top 5 books" list.

Beautifully written story about an amazing person who lived his life to the fullest and with such passion and dignity. He was a sole master of his faith. This novel offers lots of great life lessons for all of us.

"...BELIEVE IN MAGIC! Everything is a miracle! Don't let the light go out, it burns within us, fueled by passion and sheer joy of life and discovery."

I wish we all had someone like Doc DeLyle in our lives to teach us about life, love and just pure magic. Everything and anything is possible, just belive in yourselves! Love this book!

    5 out of 5 stars Remarkable read.......2006-04-26

The Wizard's Legacy has gained a bit of a cult following here in West Virginia (yes, there are enough of us here who can read to enable a book to gain a following!) because much of the story happens in our home state. However, the tale hopscotches around the country and indeed the world with scenes in San Francisco, Chicago and New York as well as Egypt, Great Britain and Monaco.

It is the story of a remarkable man - Doc DeLyle. Doc comes across as the epitome of the American folk hero. His student is a young Craig Karges and I see Craig as the "Legacy" in the book's title.

These two men exist (or existed in Doc's case) so the book is based on real life although the author states that the work is technically inspirational fiction. Part of the fun is trying to figure out what is fact and what is fiction. However, I can tell you right now, it's almost impossible to tell the difference between the two and you might be better off just sitting back and enjoying the ride!

In this respect, the book is somewhat like the act of a magician. For example, as Craig becomes Doc's student, he progresses from learning sleight of hand tricks with coins and playing cards to learning real magic - the magic of the mind and the magic of life. As Doc tells Craig, "Not everything in this business is fake, son. Oh no, not by a long shot." Doc teaches Craig and the reader that magic is all around us, if we only open our eyes, our minds and our hearts to life's wonders. Each of us has the power to magically transform our lives, to become anything we want.

The book is inspirational and spiritual. A coming of age story blended with an adventure story and a ghost story all in one. I've honestly never read anything quite like The Wizard's Legacy - A Tale of Real Magic!

5 out of 5 stars The Wizard is real magic!.......2006-04-10

The Wizard's Legacy is a book designed to entertain and provoke thoughts at the same time.

The book is in two parts. The first focuses on a magical summer when a 13-year-old Craig Karges spends time with his enigmatic great-uncle Alain Doc DeLyle. "Doc" is a true character. A former vaudevillian, fortune teller and a wonderful storyteller, he teaches the boy the finer points of stage magic, mind reading and the great mysteries of life.

In the second half of the book, the boy has now become a man and is an accomplished entertainer, mentalist and magician. The adult Karges finds a series of journals written by his long dead uncle and rediscovers the magic that was and is Alain Doc DeLyle. This part of the book recounts Doc's early years as told through his writings with a number of very inspirational tales of Doc working with various clients to help them overcome their fears and problems.

The book then comes full circle as it is revealed how the connection between student and teacher was never broken and how the actual book you're reading came to be!

There is a lot of "magic" in the book but the real magic spoke about in the subtitle has more to do with the magic of life and the life lessons revealed in the book - not in stage hocus pocus or mysticism.

One of the strongest lessons in the book is the reminder that even though loved ones pass from our lives we keep them alive in our hearts and in our minds and that is real magic.

I'll close this review with some selected quotes from Doc to give you an idea of his wit and wisdom.

"Real magic begins in the mind."

"If you really believe in your own magic others will too."

"What you think about most of the time you eventually become."

"Even the power of affirmation cannot conquer death. But perhaps it can make what life we're appointed worth living."

"Anyone can talk to the dead. The trick is getting them to answer back."

"Those who firmly deny the existence of ghosts are rarely troubled by them."

"I firmly believe that one shouldn't let truth interfere with a good story."

"The open mind is like an open window allowing all possibilities to enter."

    1 out of 5 stars Painfully disappointing.......2005-12-19

This book is just not what it claims to be: a tale of real magic. Its authors make this claim: that Uri Geller wields powerful paranormal talents. He doesn't. Uri Geller is a pathetic fraud, and portraying him as not just sympathetic but as a heroic truth-teller and magician is just flat-out wrong. I hoped for an awful lot more than this book delivers.

5 out of 5 stars The making of a Wizard.......2003-05-29

I'm a skeptic. I've always believed that psychic phenomenon, spiritualists and fortunetelling were all parts of a large pile of BS.

Craig Karges "The Wizard's Legacy" about the life of his great uncle Alain "Doc" DeLyle and Alain's effect on 12 year old Craig is a mind expanding yarn.

Doc's explanation of his apparent psychic abilities and his attitude toward death and religion are more illuminating than anything else I've read on the subject.

I only read this book because I'd seen Craig perform and figured it might be interesting. I fully expected the kind of self serving crap that Kreskin (and Dunninger before him) had published to attempt to build up their reputation.

This book is a sincere attempt to help the reader understand a most amazing performer, psychologist, and teacher.

This was a surprisingly rewarding book. I had tears running down my cheeks as I read the last chapter.

5 out of 5 stars Celebration of Freedom.......2004-09-10

From beginning to end I was caught in the poignant details of this story. The Russian Revolution is brought to life through the individuals who face poverty, uncertainty, and constant changes in their circumstances. Whether people are poor, middle class, or wealthy, they are thrown together in difficult, often dangerous situations. Nora Percival fills the pages with family members who are at times wise and courageous only to later be petty and weak, each one trying to survive in a world that no longer makes any sense and which never stands still long enough to build new understandings about how to respond. Nora's free spirit in the midst of this chaos is a constant inspiration. As a young child and into her teens she tends to her mother who is depressed and unable to find the energy required by this newly restricted environment. 4 out of 5 stars Fascinating.......2003-09-25

This book details the events that brought an immigrant family to safe harbor in the US after escape from the Russian revolution. The viewpoint is that of a young girl, just 3 years old at the beginning of the story. This young girl is the only daughter of a bourgeoisie family. Her father left the farm as a penniless young man, and through his own enterprise came to own a small shoe factory in Samara. As the revolution takes hold, Percival's father is named as a criminal against society because of his social standing, and he is forced to flee to Manchuria, leaving his wife and daughter behind. Percival describes to us how she and her mother gradually lose their life of relative luxury and ease, how their German governess fled, and how they had to abandon their home and move in with her paternal grandparents. The circumstances that follow develop her into a mature young woman by the time the main narrative ends when she is 8 years old and living in New York City.

Occasionally, especially in the first chapter, Percival's writing style can be a little annoying. Nevertheless, the story that she has to tell is riveting. She provides unique details of the daily life of ordinary people in the time just before, during, and after the Russian revolution. She also tells us much about the conditions and rules faced by immigrants to the US during the early part of the 20th century.

I learned so much about revolutionary Russia and a different way of life from this book. Reading Ms. Percival's life story was intriguing--full of happy reunions and sad partings. The book really makes you realize that people are the same all over the world. This story of a young girl's long journey to America will inspire you and make you cry.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent! Definitely a book to add to one's collection........2002-12-12

This memorable book gives us the memoirs of an 88 year old first time novelist, Nora Lourie Percival. This is far and away the best book I have read in years. It is an interesting and compelling story of a child growing up in and then escaping from Communist Russia. It is wonderfully written and historically significant. The rich descriptive narrative is a pleasure to read and to hear read (my husband and I read it aloud to one another). I found myself continually rereading passages purely for the purpose of savoring the author's exquisite use of language; I have read few contemporary writers whose use of language is as skillful and as sensitive as is this writer's. This is a book to be added to the family library and to be re-read throughout the years. It is an absorbing, heartbreaking and uplifting true story of a child and her family's survival of the Russian Revolution. The reader is grabbed by the first pages and his interest is held throughout. I've bought several to give as gifts. I would recommend it to anyone! It is truly marvelous.

5 out of 5 stars Weather of the Heart.......2002-03-16

Nora Percival's book vies with Frank McCourt's book as an honest, heart-wrenching memoir. It is a book every American needs to read and it one of the finest books of this decade.

                    Book Description

Southern New Jersey is a region full of rich heritage and yet it is one of the best kept historical secrets of our nation. Many famous people have lived in Southern New Jersey and numerous world renowned businesses were started in this area as well. Patriots, Pirates, and Pineys was written to address the ignorance of the heritage surrounding the Shore and Pine Barrens regions of New Jersey.

This collection of biographies gives the reader a sense of history about the area through the stories of the people who resided here and a look into their lives. Tales of such famous figures as John Wanamaker, Henry Rowen, and Sara Spenser Washington are all included as well as some lesser known but equally heroic people. Some of the subjects would be considered patriots, some pirates, and some Pineys but they all would be considered people who helped make America what it is today.

In 60 short biographies, Robert A. Peterson exposes South Jersey's unheralded historical contibutions in wide ranging fields as politics, business, science, humanitarianism and civil rights. From the invention of the submarine, to the founding of the anti-slavery movement to signers of the Declaration of Independence and angels of mercy during the Revolutionary War, "Patriots, Piarates, and Pineys" is fascinating, essential reading for New Jersyites and history buffs alike.

                      Book Description

Many people have always believed that more can be accomplished when government, business, and the general public cooperate with a common goal in mind. Unfortunately it has taken the recent manifestations of two of humankind's oldest scourges--terrorism and disease--to bring the point home. For example, the lack of collaboration among various government agencies prior to the attacks of September 11, 2001, has been found to have been of such an egregious nature that a new Homeland Security umbrella department was formed to ensure a new level of cooperation. And in China in early 2003, SARS (Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome) was found to have spread far beyond initial reports, a discovery that led in April of that year to the unprecedented step of firing the mayor of Beijing for mishandling the situation. To handle potential future attacks and outbreaks of disease, as well as to maximize the results of collaboration when times are good, it is imperative for citizens, the private sector, and government agencies--especially at the local, regional, and state levels--to learn how, when and why they should share information, knowledge, and resources to get things done. Collaboration is the real challenge facing free democracies in the future, and the success of modern societies will hinge upon our meeting this challenge. The community level is a most promising arena in which to start and to practice many collaborative ventures. The power of citizens as individuals and within groups can be expected to increase dramatically, in line with more involvement of the media and academia. This book presents various examples of successful collaboration and partnership for inspiration and presents a theoretical typology among such closely related concepts as integration, partnership, coooperation, coordination, and association. Current thinking in the field is rather pessimistic about the actual willingness to collaborate among all parties. This book offers a more optimistic (but also realistic) pattern of alliance that is vital for modern societies that carry the heavy burden of citizens' growing demands and needs.

I began playing and tinkering with music in 2003. I finally purchased my own guitar in 2004 and have had a few instruments since then. I bought my banjo 1 month ago, have taken 2 lessons and absolutely...with loss of words, love this instrument, the way it is played, how it sounds and its history and how I plan to take my skills with assistance from this book. This book has changed my way of playing and I plan to study it thoroughly. I purchased the book/cd combo and it has over 50 tracks of practicing techniques that Earl has worked out for us. As said before, the history, over 40 tabbed songs, many techniques including scrugss style rolls and much more. The book is filled with every bit of useful information for the banjo player or enthusiast. Please consider purchasing if you are a beginner or finding yourself troubled with no instruction. My theory is that it is never too late to start a new instrument. The banjo and this book have changed my life. I feel as though I will devote the majority of my time towards the banjo and mastering scruggs style with this particular book. Start with this one for sure. Good luck.

What more can I say that has not already been said? Perhaps a quote from my favorite teacher, Murphy Henry, from her column in the October 2006 Banjo Newsletter: "Start with Earl. Learn the basics the way Earl played them. Those are the tools you need to get you started. You do not have to reinvent banjo playing. Earl has already paved the way."
