One of a kind.......1999-06-29

The title of Michael Sedge's book says "Guide to Global Markets," and about 60% of the book is dedicated to rather extensive listings of magazine, newspaper and book publishing houses from such diverse markets as Fair Lady in Capetown, South Africa and Modern Boating in Australia. Yet the key to this 275-page guide is a concept that has made, or broken, many freelance writers' careers - reselling.

Sedge makes suggestions that I still have trouble with, mostly things that reflect his many years at the work, and his level of success. He says to send originals or color copies of clips rather than B&W copies - an expensive proposal for a struggling freelancer. He says it is always best to query rather than send complete articles, while many other equally successful writers have said just the opposite is true.

And then there is what he calls "The Return Envelope Illusion."

His attitude is this: if they're interested, they call you. Sedge says, "Because I consider myself a business dealing with another business, I stopped sending SASEs fifteen years ago." He sends out queries, either email or regular mail, and waits. If 90 days go by without a reply, he sends the idea to someone else. And judging by his success rate, it may very well work. But I have yet to try it.

But regardless of your own success rate, "Global Markets" is an education in the business of freelancing, and well worth the effort to find it.

Review of "Walk Softly and Carry a Big Idea".......2002-10-27

I think this is an excellent book for anyone who is working. As a designer of programs for managers and executives I keep track of the current market and read or scan most of the books published, and there are some good ones. This book is a fictional story that carries a truly big idea. Imagine if you could have it all--a way to succeed at work without giving up your life. If you are looking for a book that contains model policies and procedures, this book is not for you. When I opened the cover, I fully expected to see full-length sample model policies and procedures. For example, your typical investment policy should be seven or more pages. Mr. McMillan's "model" policy had only a couple of useless paragraphs. I expected more for the $65 cover price.

Finding a hard to find book..........2002-12-03

The importance of policies!.......2000-01-29

As a partner with a CPA firm in Annapolis, MD, our firm has several not-for-profit clients. One of their most serious deficiences is the lack of formal, board-approved accounting and financial policies and procedures.

Our experience has been that formal policies, in addition to eliminating misunderstandings between the CEO, the CFO and the board is that they are invaluable in the event of an IRS audit.

When advising our clients of the importance of these policies, we found that compiling policies from scratch was a very time-consuming process.

We found the answer - McMillan's "Model Accounting & Financial Policies and Procedures Handbook". This book addresses every conceivable policy from Access to Records by Members to the Year-End Manual and everything in between! Additionally, the CD Rom that is included with the book results in completing an otherwise onerous task with a minimum of effort.

We use it at our firm and we highly recommend it to our clients!

My major of graduate is WDM(Water Demand Management). I bourt it just after it began to be sold. I have read it five times, and I got new knowleges evey time. I show it to my classmates, they all read it.

Freshwater resources are growing increasingly scarce and conflicts over potable water are becoming more common. In order to deal with these problems and to allocate water, managers and water resource planners must have information regarding the nature of competing water demands. The Economics of Water Demands represents the first comprehensive treatment of economic research directed at understanding the structure of water demands in over a decade. This treatment includes discussions of many facets of water demands, including the economic theory of water demands, econometric and programming models of water demands, the results of empirical models, and the application of water demand information in the design of water management policies.

The first section of the book critically assesses the state of knowledge regarding water demands in each of the major water-using sectors: residential, industrial, and agricultural. The second section examines the demand for sewage treatment and wastewater disposal, as well as water demands in low-income countries. The third section of the book considers the valuation of water use. The final section is concerned with the application of water demand information in the management of water and the forecasting of water demands.

The book traces the historical development of economic research in each of the sections. At the same time, the book also covers the most recent developments in the literature, including the role of risk in agricultural water demands, the estimation of discrete choice models of supply source choice by households in low-income countries, and use of ecological models to assess in-stream water demands.

The abstract provided by the Pentagon follows: The performance analysis of a differential phase shift keyed (DPSK) communications system, operating in a Rayleigh fading environment, employing convolutional coding and diversity processing is presented. The receiver is the conventional square-law DPSK receiver using soft-decision convolutional decoding. The computationally efficient union bound technique is utilized to evaluate the system performance. The coded and uncoded system performances of various diversity combining techniques are evaluated and compared. The combining techniques considered include equal gain combining (EGC), selection combining (SC), and a generalization of SC, whereby two or three signals with the two or three largest amplitudes are noncoherently combined. This generalized method is called second or third order SC and denoted as SC2 or SC3, respectively. Numerical results indicate that coded systems with SC2 and SC3 techniques significantly enhance the bit-error rate (BER) performance relative to that achievable with SC.

Life after Auschwitz.......2007-05-06

Trude Levi (Nee Mosonyi) relates her life before Auschwitz as a young girl growing up in Szombathely, 'the most anti-semitic town in Hungary, going on to her experiences at school during therise of anti-Semitism in her hungary, the horrors of Auschwitz, how she survived after she collapsed from exhaustion, on a death march, after the Nazis decided she was 'not worth a bullet'.
she go's on to describe her life after the holocaust, as a refugee in France, and her marriage to the schizophrenic musician Stephan Deak, and her life in
Durban, Israel and finally London, with her son Ilan.
Levi describes her life in all these places, describing the locations with accurate descriptive skill.
She describes her years of loneliness, with her husband in sanatoria, and her difficulty in dealing with his insanity, her work as a teacher, a librarian and a mother, and her later trials and tribulations.
An interesting account, because it tells of the life of a holocaust survivor, after her liberation from the camps, and how she survived through the decades.
