Revolutionary.......2006-08-30
I read this book when it first came out and it blew my paradigms out of the water--and not just in regard to backpacking! Jardine slays many of the "sacred cows" of backpacking here. This is the book that launched the lightweight backpacking revolution.
Concepts I had always accepted as the "conventional wisdom" of backpacking: you must wear big heavy boots, you must carry a big heavy pack, etc., etc. were demolished by Jardine. His ability to think so far outside the box was really astonishing. He made so much sense, I was amazed I hadn't seen these things before. It actually made me look at other areas of my life to see where else I needed to recognize blind spots and think outside the box.
Great ideas that will help you enjoy the wilderness more. From the man who invented camming devices for rock climbing and I'm pretty sure he was the first person to climb at 5.12 level.
Best "How-to" for the PCT, period........2004-08-05
This book completely transformed the way I plan and execute multi-day backpacking trips. What's more is that the transformation was literally overnight. In August of 1998, before I read the book, I hiked 187 miles on the PCT in 14 days and averaged about 13 miles per day. After that hike, I bought this book an went back out on the PCT two weeks later to apply Jardine's methods, which resulted in covering 221 miles in 9 days for an average of almost 25 miles per day. I was able to double my daily mileage just by reading the book!
Its not just the increased mileage that impressed me, but also the increased comfort. Because I was able to lighten my load tremendously, I was more comfortable while hiking and not as worn out when I stopped. No more back pains from huge and heavy packs.
Almost all the techniques that Jardine teaches are simple and easy to learn. Like I said above, in just two weeks, I was able to apply everything in the book that appealed to me and the results were immediate and direct.
Some people do not like Jardine's authoritative writing style, but it didn't bother me in the least. I jsut took the ideas that I liked and didn't bother with the few I found to be unappealing.

Being an Eagle Boy Scout, I was prepared for everything. In fact, I was so prepared I could hardly carry my pack. Ray Jardine has shown me a new way: less is more. Less weight is more enjoyment while backpacking.

The book was great if you can keep an open mind. The book can really change your hiking style.
I tried it and it works..........1998-12-12
Last summer I walked 515 miles using the techniques in Jardines book. I walked through the entire state of Washington. I encountered rain, snow, mosquitos galore and a host of other problems that were all easily handled with the techniques outlined in Ray's book. I even made my own backpack on an old Singer sewing machine with the plans in the book. I wore running shoes the whole way. I finished the hike in 23 days, counting the five rest days I took. This book is excellant, not to mention well written.

The Taxation of International Entertainers and Athletes -- All the World's a Stage provides a comprehensive and detailed analysis of the taxation of non-resident entertainers and athletes in seven countries -- Australia, Canada, France, Germany, Japan, the United Kingdom and the United States. The book deals with the many sources of income which such individuals can derive, including income from live performances, television appearances, commercials, product endorsements, royalties for record sales or `needle time', and merchandising of concert paraphernalia. The primary focus of the book is income tax, although VAT regimes are also considered. In addition, the book provides in-depth analysis of Article 17 (Artists and Sportsmen) of the OECD Model Tax Treaty, particularly regarding the extensive additions to the Commentary to that Article made in 1992 based on the OECD's 1987 report on the taxation of entertainers and athletes. The book contains a table summarising the tax treaty provisions applicable to personal services income derived by entertainers and athletes in the seven countries reviewed. Two examples (one dealing with a touring pop group and the other with a professional tennis player) are used to illustrate, compare and contrast the manner in which income earned by non-resident entertainers and athletes is treated under domestic income tax and VAT regimes (where applicable) in these countries. Finally, conclusions are drawn, at the domestic and international levels, regarding policy and practical considerations in the effective and efficient taxation of such individuals.
Book Description
Intangibles are harder to measure, harder to quantify, often more difficult to manage, evaluate, and account for than tangible assets. There is no common language for sharing information about intangible sources of value, and the language used tends to be descriptive rather than quantitative and concrete.
Unseen Wealth stresses the importance of developing standards for identifying, measuring, and accounting for intangible assets, and recommends actions to government and business for improving the quality and quantity of available information about intangible investments. The book articulates a three-pronged set of reforms to help companies construct better business and reporting models, improve the quality of financial reporting, and clarify intellectual property right laws.
Unseen Wealth was developed by the Brookings Task Force on Intangibles, which includes business leaders, consultants, accounting professionals, economists, intellectual property lawyers, and policy analysts.

Just goes to show you how good Amazon's recomendation engine is - I wouldn't have gone looking for this title, but I am very glad I have it now. This slim volume (only 120 pages, including the notes) goes a long way towards illuminating the importance of "intangible" items such as intellectual capital, research and development, brand names, etc., are to the economic growth and wealth of our society. As the preface to chapter one, Blair and Wallman quote Attorney Lloyd Cutler (commenting on the proposed breakup of Microsoft), "Given that no company can establish a monopoly on brains, how do you keep the people that make it work? There are no tangible assets to divest. There is intellectual property and that's about it - and a building." Exactly! As the events of September 11th so horrily illustrated, you could burn the plant to the ground, but as long as you have a repository of your critical business information, you can resume business anywhere. How we view and deal with our intangible assets may be the one thing that determines whether a company survives or not. I think all managers everywhere should read this book.

This is an excellent book on how financial markets work and on why they have become so much more volatile in recent years. It explains how the performance pressures on fund mangers are making markets less efficient and why and how this inefficiency explains recent financial crises and the ups and downs of the stock market. Unlike most economists, Dr. Harmes successfully predicted the collapse of stock prices. He gives a sound explanation for why the Dow, and not just tech stocks, were overvalued and why the current correction and slowdown was so hard to predict - but why it could have been. His explanation builds and expands on Shiller's "Irrational Exuberance" argument and provides useful lessons to help investors in the current period of volatility.

This book is not getting the attention it deserves. It is an outstanding book based on Dr. Harmes's PHd thesis from York University. He seems to cover everything: monetary policy, exchange rate fluctuations, capital controls, and herd behaviour. If you have some background in economics even better. Conservatives won't like the arguments but then again conservatives still think markets are 100% efficient!

De Hillary solo tenía las ideas preconcebidas que habilmente la prensa ha dejado filtrar; una mujer inteligente, pero fría y calculadora. Con esta autobiografía he podido comprobar que ella es mucho más que eso, es incluso una persona que ha realizado en su vida lo que varias. A pesar de ser una persona eminentemente política, es en el buen sentido de la palabra, el de trabajar para los demás, de tener metas y lograr cambios. Me enorgullece pertener a su mismo género.

An Actual Balanced Account.......2000-04-01
This is neither an expose nor a ballyhoo (despite the subtitle, "Talent On Loan From God", which is a phrase Limbaugh often applies to himself) but is straightforward account of an intelligent but aimless man who eventually wanders into the role of the biggest thing in talk radio.
If it has a fault it's that it's too dry, but you'll find a lot of interesting events that foreshadow his future career as the right's spokesman. For instance, how he was fired from his DJ job for contantly playing the Rolling Stones'"Under My Thumb", probably the most misogynistic rock song of all time.

Everything Rush.......2000-03-09
If you like Limbaugh or hate him, this is a "must have" book. Get the straight story on Rush's draft deferement, the debt he owes to Rock and Roll Hall of Fame Disk Jockey Larry Lujack. Colford is a serious journalist and does a fine job of shucking this particular ear of American corn.
