Not Worth it!!.......2007-10-11

The book is not worth buying. It is not helpful in anyway. Also, it is for the 3rd edition not the most recent 4th edition companion book.

A mixed bag. Perhaps too focused for an introduction........2005-06-23

One of the best features of this book is that the introductory chapter argues for the importance of business ethics, and that good ethics is good business. Also, Weiss provides very direct, concrete questions and directives when discussing ethical decision-making. On the negative side, there are no readings. However, simulated case studies are presented, which is helpful. A more serious shortcoming, I think, is that there is precious little discussion of ethical theories in the book. On my view, obtaining at least a general understanding of the more prominent approaches to ethics (e.g. utilitarianism, virtue theory, ethical egoism, moral relativism, etc.) is an essential aspect of any course on business ethics, and a text should reflect this. Finally, the specificity of his approach (i.e. the stakeholder and issues management approach) may put off those who are looking for a broader approach to business ethics. This book may be helpful if used in conjunction with a survey of ethical theory, but it is uneven as a stand-alone text.

Excellent text for discussing intermediate level business ethics dilemmas and providing a perspective from which to base arguments for or against a position.

A genius's work on so many levels........2005-05-11

As a student, reading this is pretty eye-opening. I am a clarinetist myself, and some of the things that Mr. Shaw accomplished were pretty darn amazing. His book shoed how we are all running after something, and it can be fun, but we look forward to catching it until we actually catch it and realize that it's empty.
The book wasn't amazing because Mr. Shaw possessed musical expertise. It was amazing because he understood the way the human race works. His work showed that he could see things other people couldn't. The book is interesting, but very tough reading. If you don't have enough time to tackle this all at once, then I suggest that you wait until you have the time, or you will lose some of the impact.
This book is one of the most powerful I have read in my life. It really shows how life works and how people react to life. It may ruin your little bubble in life, but it may also help give you new direction.

A GENIUS AND HIS MUSIC.......2003-04-03

Ever since I was introduced to the world of Artie Shaw's music - at about the age of 14 - I have been a devotee of his work. Easily my favourite big band of the fabled Swing Era, I thought Artie's clarinet had a woodsy tone which was prettier than Goodman's (although Benny was undoubtedly the better clarinetist) and felt that his band sounded more swinging and modern than Goodman's. Shaw's 1938 band ("Begin the Beguine") was fantastic as was his equally famous 31 piece 194O band ("Frenesi"). His 1941 Orchestra gave us the lush classic versions of "Star Dust", "Moonglow" & "Dancing in the Dark" Classy and unforgettable records, those three sides!

Born in NYC 23 May, 191O, Arthur Issac Arshawsky somehow escaped living a life of poverty via sheer will and determination to "be somebody": perhaps the most innovative and creatively intellectual of all the big-time leaders, one can hear Shaw's genius in his music: his diversity, originality and creative tendencies are fascinating and astounding to hear.

His initial band in 1936 included strings - something which was highly unusual for a swing band. "There's Frost on the Moon" vocalised by Peg La Centra and "Japanese Sandman" are both available on CD - as good examples of his music from this period.

In 1939, at the height of his popularity, Shaw - who could never abide bobby-soxers & autograph hounds - simply walked off the bandstand one night and fled to Mexico. Shaw loved music and all its aspects - but LOATHED the business side of his career. But he couldn't stay away for good. Artie was back on top with another great hit he found south of the border: "Frenesi".

This intellectual genius - still living in Southern California - married Kathleen Winsor, who authored "Forever Amber". Lana Turner was his young bride and another wife - Ava Gardner - was crazy about him. Shaw was also married to Scarlett O' Hara's younger sister - Evelyn Keyes. Creative, frustrated, brilliant and a perfectionist, Shaw's legacy is his fabulous music - most of which is re-mastered and available to the public on CD's. Perhaps the most inspired "small group" of the entire Swing Era was Artie's terrific Gramercy Five.

My personal favourites of his records are BEGIN THE BEGUINE, MOONGLOW, STAR DUST, DANCING IN THE DARK, OCTOROON, OUT OF NOWHERE, LOVE FOR SALE, NOCTURNE, CONCERTO FOR CLARINET, TEMPTATION, COMIN' ON, BACK BAY SHUFFLE, ONE FOOT IN THE GROOVE, ONE NIGHT STAND, CHANTEZ-LES BAS, FRENESI, SUMMIT RIDGE DRIVE, BLUES IN THE NIGHT, THE MAID WITH THE FLACCID AIR, SEPTEMBER SONG, BETWEEN A KISS AND A SIGH...among many others.

A great musical talent writes an excellent book........2000-05-06

An intelligent,insightful and entertaining autobiography.A delightful read. For many years I thought Artie Shaw was an old grouchy talented musician who flippantly gave up his musical profession. This book changed my mind completely and anyone who appreciates Mr. Shaw's music should read it. A great book.

After years of looking through used and vintage book stores, it's great to see the re-release of Artie Shaw's books. His writing is just as masterful as the music he writes, although I'm sure he wouldn't like that comparison. I would recommend this book to fans of Shaw, jazz, a bygone era, or any book lover. You won't be able to put it down.

Everthing you wanted to know about Arite Shaw and then some!.......2007-10-01

As an avid Artie Shaw fan, it's a rare treat to have a book so complete and thoroughly researched as this one is. I must state at the outset that this book is best intended for the Jazz Collector, Jazz Enthusiast or Artie Shaw collector. If you do not have an absolute love for jazz and a strong interest in Artie, or if you are just a casual Shaw listener, this book will be too much for you. You can always turn to other areas to get information about Shaw. However, if you are a collector of this man's music, or a teacher of jazz, then this book is a must. It has the most complete and accurate discography of Artie Shaw ever put together. Complete with a biography about Artie and given the fact that the man himself wrote the foreward, this book is definitive. I thought the book was wonderfully put together and endlessly fascinating. You will have so much greater appreciation about his music and the kind of things that musicians suffer through to make great music. Logically separated Chronilogically by era and by record label, it becomes very easy to research key era's of Shaw's life. There is even a section that breaksdown EVERY recording that vocalists have made with Shaw. If only other jazz books were writen like this! The one draw back is the price. It is VERY expensive. This is without question the most expensive book about a jazz artist I've ever purchased. Fortunately for me, a friend of mine bought me a $50 gift card and I used it towards the purchase of this book. At a whopping $80, you really better love the man and his music! Fortunately, I do and I have turned to this book often as more of Shaw's unreleased recordings continue to surface. The book also has rare photos and stories. It is truly a wonderful biography and an even better referrence book. I can not recommend this book enough to lovers of classic jazz. If you have a library of great music, compliment it with this great book of Shaw's musical career. You won't be sorry.

Artie Shaw: A Musical Biography and Discography by Simosko.......2000-10-16

Vladimir Simosko has written the book I have been trying to write since I became an Artie Shaw fan and collector in 1938 when I was 13. Mr. Simosko has assembled all the information I have collected over the years regarding recording dates, musicians involved, and covers many of the questions I have asked as well. Of most interest will be the years before Shaw recorded Begin the Beguine when he was a sideman with many large radio orchestras. Simosko uses conversations he had with Artie Shaw to backup much of the information. As Shaw wrote the introduction, the book becomes "authorized" and must be regarded as the ultimate record of one of the most complex jazz musicians in the jazz world, and at the age of 90 one of the last living members of the Big Band Era.

"The Grove Dictionary of Jazz" says this piece, which is not, in fact, a concerto, rather a big band arrangement (with strings) featuring clarinet, its title inspired possibly by Ellington's "Concerto for Cootie", shows, more than any other, the range of Artie Shaw's clarinet style, which is not to say it is his best recording. It is featured toward the end of the movie "Second Chorus", starring Fred Astaire, Burgess Meredith, Paulette Goddard, and Artie Shaw (playing himself). It is available on certain Artie Shaw compilation discs.

This "book", however, is not, in fact, a score, but an abridged clarinet solo with simplified piano accompaniment and "orchestral" cues. The trumpet and piano solos are missing, but, so far as I can tell, the clarinet transcription (in concert key in the piano part, transposed in the clarinet part) is accurate. The pages are flimsy, and there is no cardboard cover, just a title sheet of the same flimsy paper. My copy arrived crimped at the corner.

This book is essential reading not only for those concerned with Israel or with the "Jewish-American experience." Stealing Home addresses universal issues that have concerned all people in all nations throughout history. It is a book about finding one's place in the world...without becoming complacent or self-righteous.

Writings on wide range of topics.......2004-09-08

I came to this book expecting it to be a memoir, or at least the author's story of how he and his family made aliyah, how they came to that decision, and what life was like for them while they were still new citizens. Instead I found the book to be about the author's experiences with and opinions on a wide variety of topics, like the Black Hebrews, the Bedouins, the Israeli school system, his periodic service in the military, and revisiting his boyhood neighbourhood in the Bronx. Some of them, like the ones on the Black Hebrews and the school system, I found more interesting than others (I wasn't that interested in the chapters on the Hispanic-Americans' visit to Israel or the poet Maxime Kumin, for example). I'm not sure how to classify this book; it's not written like a memoir, certainly doesn't read like an aliyah tract, and I wouldn't call it a collection of essays either because they're on the one hand too personal to be essays only, yet on the other hand go from topic to topic without being centered around one specific theme or time period. The book starts out very interestingly, with the author talking about how he and his wife thought they were being original when they named their firstborn Jennifer in 1965, only to their dismay and shock to discover there were many other Jennifers in her kindergarten class; the introduction closes by saying that their third- and fourth-born, Yishai and Miriam, are also far from being the only ones in their classes answering to those names, but this time Mr. Chertok and his wife (whom I've discovered he's since divorced) are neither surprised nor dismayed. And it really starts out reading like it's going to be a personal memoir of how the family made aliyah, or at least Mr. Chertok's memoirs of his life up till then. So it was kind of suprising when it quickly turned into a collection of personal recollections on a variety of topics, more like essays than real memoirs.

The writing style isn't overly complicated or boring, though I found some of the essays more relevant and interesting than others. And some of the information contained within is now dated or different; these events took place during the Eighties after all, and a lot about Israeli society has changed since then. I'm giving it four stars because, while the material was for the most part good, it's not the type of book that someone would probably be interested in reading unless s/he was already very interested in this subject. It's not for laypeople. And the arrangement of the essays also wasn't entirely to my agreement, coupled with how it's difficult to describe exactly what type of book it's supposed to be--essay, personal reflection, political tract, memoir, or a hybrid of those subjects.
