    Book Description

Here are the ins and outs of how advertising is done in Japan--a detailed, readable, fascinating report for Westerners and others who need a fast, hands-on explanation about how to reach Japanese consumers in their own land. Covering each sector of the industry and providing the knowledge that any Japanese account executive already has, Mooney explains the quirks of Japanese hard and soft sells, the use of foreign celebrities in Japanese advertising, and how copy is developed in Japanese. He also focuses on Japanese media and why it differs from media in the West. Astute marketers worldwide will find here the tools they need to get an edge on their counterparts elsewhere. Students of advertising, marketing, and international business will get a text they can use now--and a resource to keep throughout their careers. Mooney makes clear that cultural norms must be respected when advertising to Japanese consumers. Despite what we've read about how Japanese society is changing, modernization is not Westernization. He also shows that while Japanese ads tend to be more subtle than Western advertising, there are still many that take a "direct approach" and what could even be called a hardsell approach, but this may not be recognized by Westerners unconversant in Japanese. Then too, Japanese media may look similar to Western media but they are actually quite different. They vary in circulation, coverage, subscriptions, and in other critical ways. What these differences are is essential to know if Westerners are to place their ads effectively in Japanese media and get the results they want. The book is organized by subjects; readers can jump from one to another without losing continuity. Each section begins with a short background explanation of the way in which the topic under discussion evolved--providing the all-important why of the topic as well as the how. It is the only work of its kind so far by one who not only works in the Japanese advertising industry, but who is also half-Japanese, half-American himself, and thus a book totally unbiased in its presentation and informed by a sensibility seldom found.

5 out of 5 stars The Best Book I've Read on Psychology of Investing.......2003-09-06

To make a long story short, I was one of those traders who did well when "everyone was a genius in the bull market" of the late 90's!!
Since then, I've been studying hard, & have realized that (at least) 90% of my trading success is psychological.
I've been to a therapist, read many books, consulted online, etc.
Until I read "Investment Madness" I just couldn't figure out what was going on with me & my trading losses.
It is now so obvious, & the author explained it so clearly in his chapter on "Pride & Regret".
This book explains why I reacted the way I did, and it helped me to change my behavior, & become a more successful trader.
    Highly recommended!!!

    2 out of 5 stars Too Simplistic.......2002-12-10

having read the author's newer book, "Investment Blunders", I was disappointed. The book is simplistic, with little truly enlightening information. A book that covers many of the pitfalls, and supplies the reader with material of substance is William Bernstein's, Four Pillars. I would not spend money on this book.

    4 out of 5 stars An easy-to-read basic introduction.......2002-02-06

This book doesn't attempt to be a complete or rigorous examination of investor psychology (you might even find yourself wondering about some of the conclusions drawn from such limited data in some of the examples); it's more in the 'lightweight but easy to read' variety. As an introduction to 'following the crowd' and other investor temptations though, it does okay. It's good to take stock of yourself occasionally and this book should help. And, thankfully, the pages devoted to the tulip mania of the 1600s was mercifully few (does every investment book these day have to retell that story; often incorrectly).

    4 out of 5 stars a different approach.......2002-01-23

this book was easy to read and enjoyable but this did no detract from the value of its message. it is,i believe, designed to make you look at how you make investment decisions. some ideas i was aware of butsome made me think. one interesting implication that i thought of was it provided and additional reason for the erratic returns of mutual funds

5 out of 5 stars Entertaining and Educational!.......2001-11-15

This book was a pleasure to read. I was entertained while I was learning how to avoid leading myself into disaster. The psychological biases are illustrated in a very straight-forward manner. Stop the Madness!

    Book Description

This book provides a distinctive and wide-ranging introduction to business ethics. In so doing, Bowie applies the essential features of Kantian moral philosophy to the business firm by addressing the question "How should a business firm in a capitalist economy be structured and managed according to the principles of Kant's ethics?" In answering that question the author spells out the implications of Kant's ethics for business practice.

It provides essential reading for anyone with an academic or professional interest in business ethics today.

    Customer Reviews:

2 out of 5 stars Questionable Understanding of Kant.......2004-08-06

Bowie clearly misunderstands Kant and turns him into an advocate of running a business by consensus, a misuse of Kant's concept of personal sovereignty and a misunderstanding of his ideas about property and commerce. He also does not adequately address the limitations of the categorical imperative, particularly the requirement of generalizing maxims, which leads to many odd moral rules...(e.g., never lie....not even to hide Jews from Nazis). For a better rendition of Kant, generally, and as applied to business and economics, specifically, see Michael Berumen's Do No Evil: Ethics with Applications to Economic Theory and Business.

4 out of 5 stars A fine book, not without some problems, but altogether good.......2001-06-29

Deontology is quite promising for the field of business ethics, and this book serves as a good introduction.

5 out of 5 stars A Superlative Contribution to the Field of Business Ethics.......1999-11-22

This a major new work in business ethics by one of the leaders in the field. Many people who write about business ethics tend to ignore the great traditions of ethics that should serve as the foundation for any work in applied ethics. Bucking this trend, Bowie applies Kantian moral principles to business and derives a series of well reasoned conclusions about the moral obligations of businesspersons. The work is noteworthy for its attention to recent Kant scholarship and for the clarity and accessibility of its writing. A superlative work.

      Book Description

"This is one of the most coherent and comprehensive theories of evaluation yet formulated and one that makes a most valuable contribution. The authors are pioneering in important new directions."
--Ernest R. House, author of Professional Evaluation and Evaluating with Validity

"This book is the best I've ever read detailing a practical theory of evaluation. It is comprehensive, beautifully written, and makes sense of the evaluation enterprise. It does so by emphasizing the major function of evaluation as sense-making about policies and programs."
--Thomas D. Cook, professor, sociology, psychology, education, and public policy, Northwestern University

Programs that serve the needs of the public continually face changes brought by social, political, and economic forces. To survive these changes, organizations must evaluate their programs wisely and realistically. This book offers a new approach to evaluation, one that will encourage all kinds of organizations and agencies to improve their contributions to social betterment. The authors draw from three decades of evaluation practice and theory to present their own framework for conceptualizing evaluation and for pragmatically assessing social policies and programs.

They analyze four purposes of evaluation:

    • To review the merit of programs and their value to society
    • To improve the organization and its services
    • To ensure program compliance with mandates
    • To build knowledge and expertise for future programs

For the practitioner, these purposes help define the approach and methods for an evaluation. The authors also enrich their discussion with four possible modes of inquiry: description, classification, causal analysis, and values inquiry. Filled with tables, charts, and figures, this resource invites organizations to make the most appropriate programming decisions based on thoughtful and systematic methods. Evaluation: An Integrated Framework for Understanding, Guiding, and Improving Policies and Programs is a tool that scholars can use to rejuvenate their view of evaluation and that practitioners can use to integrate the best techniques with a contemporary understanding of social policy and change.

4 out of 5 stars A Primer for sorting out conceptual muddles in the field.......2004-01-22

Amidst a burgeoning growth industry in policy evaluation, characterized by a plethora of approaches and non-standard language usage, editors of two prominent evaluation journals join forces with a third colleague to provide an overview and an inclusive framework that differentiates in simple language, major approaches taken to policy and program evaluation to date.

Beginning with a core definition of evaluation as assisted sense-making whose ultimate objective is social betterment, the authors distinguish four purposes of evaluation: (1) assessment of merit and worth (2) program and organizational improvement, (3) oversight and compliance, and (4) knowledge development. Conceptual clarity over purpose(s) helps avoid muddles encountered in everyday arenas of evaluation and is directly pertinent to modes of inquiry appropriate to those purposes. In the second section of the book the authors distinguish four types of evaluative inquiry and discuss how to plan corresponding evaluative methods appropriate to the purpose(s) at hand. With a view toward conceptual coherence, they spend a chapter grounding their conception of evaluation as assisted sense-making in a philosophy of common sense realism. The third and final section of the book then considers closely, uses and challenges for each of these four modes of evaluative inquiry and devotes one chapter to each: (1) "Description," (2) "Classification," (3) "Causal Analysis," and (4) "Values Inquiry." In so doing, the authors contribute toward enhanced clarity in the "evaluation jungle" at significant levels of analysis and deliver what they promise in simple common sense language: an integrated framework for understanding, guiding, and improving public and nonprofit policies and programs.

My only reservation is related to what in content is also a strength. Rich in academic references, with an adaptation in format, these references could have better been placed in endnotes rather than parentheses. This would have facilitated reading flow. The decision to keep a format that is probably more useful in journals than books accounts for a one star deduction and four star rating.

A solid well-grounded theoretical analysis that will help those engaged in policy/program evaluation sort out a lot of muddles ahead of time rather than unnecessarily being caught in the mire. Another indication that, while good theory will never get as far as accounting for all the exigencies in a complex world, good theory is helpful in avoiding unnecessary confusions and many commonplace and wholly predictable errors in advance. Highly recommended.

3 out of 5 stars Aimed at both practitioners and academics.......2003-08-23

This book serves two purposes. It is a comprehensive text on evaluation aimed at both practitioners and academics, but most importantly, it is a treatise aimed at introducing a new evaluation framework. It is a textbook with a point of view. The authors begin with the premise that the fundamental purpose of evaluation is social betterment, which is "...the reduction or prevention of social problems, the improvement of social conditions, and the alleviation of human suffering." From these roots, they build a new `realistic' evaluation framework. Although aimed primarily at public and non-profit organizations, many of the lessons can be applied in the private sector as well.

Part one examines why one would want to do an evaluation in the first place. The authors purport that evaluation is a fundamental part of the democratic process because it is crucial in informing policy and decision makers about the effectiveness of public policy and programs. The book reviews the four purposes of evaluation (assessment of merit and worth, program and organizational improvement, oversight and compliance, and knowledge development) and introduces the four inquiry modes (description, classification, causal analysis and values inquiry). The authors provide extensive coverage and a critique of the academic debates concerning purposes, modes and methodology. This leads to the proposal of a realistic philosophy, which aims to move beyond traditional paradigm silos. The authors argue that by focusing on the ultimate goal of social betterment and by seeking to surface underlying values, it is possible to follow a path that tailors methodology to intended purpose.

Part two covers evaluation planning and begins the practical application part of the book. Different evaluation purposes become paramount and are more aptly suited, depending on the environment (stable, competitive, shifts in funding or new policy/program). Choosing appropriate methodology and evaluation extensiveness (i.e. quality) is aided by an understanding of primary and secondary evaluation purposes; the book provides decision-making matrices as well as many examples and references. The authors expand on their notion of a `common-sense realistic' philosophy and provide an extensive overview of the supporting principles. It is a philosophy underlined by the notion of evaluation as `assisted sensemaking' that aims to build upon and extend natural human perceptual processes. In practice, it is flexible, antiformalist and rejects the fact-value and qualitative-quantitative dichotomies. In short, it aims to do what works in a given situation and contributes the most to social betterment.

Part three provides extensive detail on the four inquiry modes (description, classification, causal analysis and values inquiry). Each chapter provides a complete overview: detailed arguments about how the selected mode can be used to support the four evaluation purposes, examples of specific evaluation methodology, interactions, notable caveats and pitfalls and an overview of critical opinion. The sections on classification and causal analysis are especially extensive, full of detailed methodology and references to external sources. The authors expand on the notion of how values inquiry can be critical in a complementary role with other modes.

The authors conclude with a statement that the field of evaluation is "...moving towards yet another rite of passage." They argue that evaluators need "...to take their proper place in the policy community" and they must become "...shameless in broadly spreading their findings...." They make a final argument in support of their realistic philosophy.

The book is often dense with citations, making for difficult reading at times. In places, especially in part one, the level of detail is far beyond that needed by the average practitioner. However, this would seem to suit the academic audience, who would find the sections devoted to methodology (aimed at practitioners) unnecessary. It seems a happy compromise. Name and subject indexes facilitate use of the book as a reference text. A thorough bibliography points the reader to external sources. It is a text thoroughly worth the attention of anyone interested in the field of evaluation.

      Book Description

The author, a veteran homeowner rights activist, makes his case against state government protection of homeowner associations. He documents, using his appearances before the Arizona Legislature, state legislative hostility toward upholding the civil liberties of homeowners with their broad, misguided interpretation of "private contract" prohibitions, and the use of statutes that favor the HOA; he provides numerous supporting materials from US Supreme Court, federal appellate and state court decisions; he provides research and publications by political scientists going back to 1992; and he even provides, in support of the advocates, the publications of the national trade organization that lobbies state legislatures against returning homeowner associations to the American system of government.

4 out of 5 stars Read this book to protect yourself.......2003-09-24

With the government creeping to our lives in many ways/angles the last thing we needed is a new type of government taking away our rights of Home Ownership. For years Home Ownership was the ultinate American Dream, a dream that has turned into a NIGHTMARE for many in HOA's.

HOA's, Home Owners Association, what a way to sneak into the lifes of so many by using the words "HOME OWNER"S Association" as if they really cared or wanted to protect the HOME OWNER. Another place the EGO can run wild and the Control Freaks can abuse others, ON THE BOARD OF A HOA.

I'm going on and on when the only thing that really matters is that you READ THIS BOOK SO YOU CAN PROTECT YOURSELF, because the State will not.

5 out of 5 stars awakening America to its loss of freedoms.......2003-09-16

George Staropoli asks: "Why are our state legislatures...(not) upholding and defending the Bill of Rights and Constitution?"
He laments the media's not revealing the constitutional issues or the laws that favor HOA boards against the homeowners.
Activist Staropoli's book documents his struggle to reclaim American homeowners' constitutional rights and to awaken America to its loss of freedom. Let's hope this call brings us back to an incisive and authoritative interpretation of the Constitution as the Federalist essays did in 1788.

5 out of 5 stars numerous court cases support homeowner rights.......2003-09-15

This book was an eye-opener! I could not believe the number of court cases, including US Supreme Court cases, contained in this book that show support for homeowner rights. This came as a surprise because I have not read or seen anything about these issues of constitutional rights in the media.

The author presents a strong case that the state legislatures and agencies are protecting private organizations, the homeowners associations, over the rights and freedoms we all believe are ours.

5 out of 5 stars From concerned homeowner in Arizona.......2003-09-13

      Unbelievable!

The topic of the failure of the Arizona Legislature to assist homeowners over 3 years tells it all. I was there and I wouldn't have believed the book if I hadn't witnessed it myself.

This book let's people know what they can expect from their government and what their rights are that have been hidden from them. I urge others living in associations, even if quite content over the years, to read this book because, like me, it could happen to you tomorrow.

                    Book Description

"For over fifty years I have waited and prayed someone would recount the experiences of the North-West African Strategic Air Force. It appeared I was destined to go to my grave a former member of the `Forgotten Air Force'." Finally though, the author has put pen to paper and written its remarkable story himself.

Living in awful conditions in the deserts of North America in 1943, the "Forgotten Air Force" bombed strategic targets in the "soft underbelly" of Europe, in Sicily and Italy. It has never had the recognition it deserves, and this book is a belated tribute. The author was a gunner in a Flying Fortress nicknamed the "Wolfpack", whose crew of ten survived no fewer than fifty bombing missions over occupied Europe. In between their terrifying missions they also found time to organize all sorts of daredevil escapades, from procuring food from unsuspecting Arabs to chasing, whenever possible, after the Mademoiselles.

It is a story of bravery and panache, and Major Joseph M. Roché ("Cajun Joe" to his comrades) tells it with humor and wit.

5 out of 5 stars A great man as well as book........2006-03-08

Major Joe was not just a great man who fought for his country, but also a man of deep pride and love for every member of his family. His deep faith, artistic and musical qualities and ability to make anyone laugh; live still in the lives of his grandchildren and children. He is missed everyday. Anyone who personally new Major Joe will understand this next sentence. "I wish I could hear about that soap of his just one more time."

I'll always remember this through out my life. "Melody" play melody, don't just strum. That is great advice for guitar playing and even life in general. Don't just strum through, play every note possible before all the strings break.

                    5 out of 5 stars What a book...........2004-02-25

Maj. Joe was a great person and apparently a great author as well. His book I thought was great. I have listined to the book on tapes he has recorded as well, I enjoyed them a lot. Major Joe was a great man and he will always be missed. He was also an awesome grandfather... Read the book, enjoy it. You wont be wasting your time.

4 out of 5 stars An important story of World War II.......2002-07-16

I had the honor of meeting the author some years ago in his hometown of St. Louis, Missouri where he regaled friends and neighbors with stories of his wartime adventures. I'm glad he was finally able to publish his memoir so many more people can enjoy the exploits of Cajun Joe and his comrades.

This is a very human story. The tales of the incredible bravery and sacrifice of these warriors is mixed with stories of trouble-making and skirt-chasing. This is not a Hollywod-style, idealized adventure, but a true story of young men who served their country under incredibly difficult conditions and who enjoyed life whenever they got the chance.

Be sure to read all the way to the end for the author's very funny tale of his trip stateside after the completion of this missions.

I'm 75. During the 30's and 40's I danced to and enjoyed the "big Bands." This book, by Fred Hall, includes great conversations with many of the leaders. You learn how they got started, problems they had, who was easy to work for, who was a tyrant. You learn that there were great bands BEFORE the Big Bands of the 40's (Jimmy Lunceford for one). Every successful leader had a mentor and it's interesting to see who mentored who.
