Useful For Those New to Call Writing.......2006-12-11

As noted in the other reviews, this book is for investors who are new to covered call writing. The text is an easy read - I finished the book in two hours. If you have any experience at all with writing covered calls, it is my opinion that you will not learn anything new from this book.

A fundamental contradiction.......2006-12-09

I bought this book as an investor heavily involved in ETFs/Index funds that broadly cover the US and Global markets. I was investing for long-term growth and bought this book hoping to increase my returns using covered call writing. So far, this is on par with what this book is about.

BUT, as I read through the methods put forth, there was a slow and subtle shift in perspective/ideology that in fact subverts the whole foundation of the goals of ETF/Index funds. No longer are we building upon the foundation of broadly-based ETFs for long-term growth, we are now looking for ETFs that are compatible with the Covered Call Writing strategy, ETFs that I discovered had very different characteristcs and met different criteria altogether. "IVV", for example, does not fit the Covered Call Writing model very well. But the premise of the book was to use one's established ETF portfolio and enhance it, not reject our whole basic strategy and go fortune hunting.

So, I ask the question for this strategy, why use ETFs at all? Because we can use our existing ETF portfolio/strategy? But if we implement the proposed Covered Call Writing strategy then we would have to gradually abandon our initial ETF strategy. So if we're interested in options, we should just go back to the basics of options and build a different strategy based on those fundamentals.

The book was easy to read and not very expensive so I don't regret buying it. It did make me think a bit.

Covered Call Writing with Exchange Traded Funds.......2006-11-10

This most basic document is tied with new vehicle to benefit from that exposure, offering little in way of what strategies lend themselves to that vehicle. A better title would have been "How Options Work". It relates to ETFs, DIA, or agricultural or metals options equally in its weak connection.

Excellent intro to Writing CC's.......2006-05-10

Very good book for people new to writing covered calls. I learned alot from the book and have put the theory into practice by writing several CC's. Unfortunately I have not found many good CC opportunities around ETFs, most have been in the 1.5-2% range one to two months out. On the other hand I found many exceptionally good opportunties on regular stocks. My only major problems so far (and it's a good one to have) is that in 4/5 cases, the stocks for which I wrote CC's have gone well beyond the strike prices. In response I have "rolled up" a few CC's to take advantage of the increased capital appreciation opportunity. This has worked fairly well but is far more complex than just letting the CC ride until expiration. My only suggestions to improve this book would be to add a section on guidelines for rolling up and down in response to stock price swings, and maybe something on writing ITM CC's instead of just OTM calls. Overall an excellent and concise book, certainly one of the most immediately useful and practical investment books that I own. Very nice job.

Revolutionary strategy coupled with clear, concise tactics.......2004-02-24

The thoughts discussed in this book are nothing short of revolutionary in terms of investment strategy and expected return implications. This book was obviously written by a practitioner who really "gets it". Mr. Kadavy explains his arguments and tactics in a very easy to understand manner -- much thanks for the cutting-edge piece which will certainly change many investors' portfolio strategies and returns!

This isn't really a book.......2002-10-15

First of all the content is, well, okay. But don't expect this to be what you expect a book to . It is really really thin-- only 63 pages long. Most magazines are thicker. When I opened the box, I thought it was empty. The book was so thin I didn't notice it was under the invoice ! Fair enough;one might argue that you can say a lot in 63 pages. But wait a minute! That's not all. Clearly half of the pages have huge blank spaces...for you to fill the blanks with your exercises, you see.It is,after all, a workbook. Then there are completely empty pages in between chapters that are counted within the 63 pages. But what makes this so unforgiveable is that most the pages that are full have huge margins to the sides, top, and bottom. Some people might find the content good, but you can get a lot more for your money elsewhere in my opinion.

Good tool for novices; even better with a facilitator.......2001-03-07

This video-and-workbook set are a great introduction to the world of foundation grant proposal development. Like any tool, it's important to know how it should be used. This set will be used best in training situations where a facilitator will be available to assist with interpreting the workbook materials and "fleshing out" some of the concepts. But that's not a requirement; anyone interested in the subject can learn a lot from this introductory material.

I'm a little surprised that the authors/publishers chose to stick with the term "grantwriter:" many foundation staffs believe that THEY are the "grant writers" and that those seeking funding are preparing applications for grant funding. However, the market holds to the term "grantwriter" for proposal applicants, and it is less cumbersome than anything else I've heard to describe those who prepare grant proposals and applications.

Watch the video first, and then tackle the workbook. [In fact, the video makes absolutely no reference to the workbook.] The video's 25 minutes are well-produced and feature foundation grants experts. The videocassette I viewed seemed to have some minor audio problems, but that may have been my equipment rather than the video itself, and in any case, it didn't affect my understanding of the material.

The video presents the twelve elements of a successful foundation grant proposal, from the cover letter through the proposal narrative to the budget and appendices. It also provides some basic tips for writing successful proposals: researching foundations; calling foundations for help; making your grant application easy to read and to navigate; writing in a clear, concise style that accurately presents a compelling case for funding, etc.

People preparing government grant applications show be wary of some of the specific advice in the video (like that to avoid double-spacing in foundation proposals), and I would have liked to see the video emphasize the overriding importance of preparing an application using the funding source's preferred format rather than a single "best practice" format, regardless of how professional it appears. It would also have been nice to see some mention of the workbook in the video, if only to reassure the viewer that they don't have to take copious notes while watching.

The 64-page large format workbook takes the writer through the organizational and "thinking" steps necessary to prepare a good grant application. There are seven exercises to help develop a clear mission and objectives, determine evaluation steps, pencil out a budget, etc. The next section of the workbook shows examples of each of the twelve components of a grant application on the right-side pages. The left-facing pages contain descriptions of each section and tips for writers, similar to the material covered in the video. The workbook's final section provides tips on strategy and structure, and discusses why not all applications are successful, again closely following the content at the end of the video.

The Grantwriter's Start-Up Kit will give novices a good introduction to the subject and some basic tools, and is a great "off the shelf" tool for facilitators and instructors seeking to expose others to the world of grantsmanship.

Dave Ramsey has been on so many TV interviews and has been profiled so often in newspapers, there just isn't much new left for him to say about his ultra-conservative approach to money management. So it is, then, that The Money Answer Book gives an easy-to-read distillation of all of the key Ramsey commandments for financial success. You can read the entire book in 90 minutes, even with time to pause occasionally to weigh a matter he is discussing. There are checklists to fill in for budgeting and goal setting; there are little hotboxes offering pithy quotations ("Well done is better than well said" - Ben Franklin); and there are biblical references within the text and in sidebars.

Whether reading this 160 mini-book, listening to Ramsey on his radio show, or attending one of Ramsey's workshops, his bottom line always comes down to some very basic premises: (1) all credit cards are harmful; (2) people are in financial messes because they overspent, didn't plan, and lacked discipline; (3) everyone needs a fallback position of three to six months of reserve cash, food, and other necessities; (4) the outside economic picture has little influence on individual households that have learned to save, invest, budget, and tithe; and (5) there is nothing wrong with being incredibly wealthy so long as one uses his or her wealth appropriately.

Sections of this book deal with brass tacks issues such as bankruptcy, divorce, estate planning, saving for college, and contract negotiations (don't become a co-signer is his main point on this last issue). Plutarch (Plutarchus), ca. 45-120 CE, was born at Chaeronea in Boeotia in central Greece, studied philosophy at Athens, and, after coming to Rome as a teacher in philosophy, was given consular rank by the emperor Trajan and a procuratorship in Greece by Hadrian. He was married and the father of one daughter and four sons. He appears as a man of kindly character and independent thought, studious and learned.

Plutarch wrote on many subjects. Most popular have always been the 46 Parallel Lives, biographies planned to be ethical examples in pairs (in each pair, one Greek figure and one similar Roman), though the last four lives are single. All are invaluable sources of our knowledge of the lives and characters of Greek and Roman statesmen, soldiers and orators. Plutarch's many other varied extant works, about 60 in number, are known as Moralia or Moral Essays. They are of high literary value, besides being of great use to people interested in philosophy, ethics and religion.

The Loeb Classical Library edition of the Lives is in eleven volumes.

What would Caesar do? Or rather, what should Caesar have done?.......2006-06-18

I am not a scholar of ancient history. I was led to this book after hearing a lecture by Bible scholar Luke Timothy Johnson. I was bowled over by the storylines and the clarity of writing. Although these are histories, they really are much more about what the title says, lives. Plutarch is writing about the moral decisions of well known figures and the very public decisions that they made in the face of historic events. Plutarch more than simply reporting the choices of these people comments and critics their actions. Demosthenes and Cicero's lives tended to drag a bit for me. However, they were necessary and interesting preludes to Alexander and Caesar, who's lives are better known to us but also physically changed the map of the world where Demosthenes and Cicero tried to change the compass of their nations. Great reading, even in summer.

A Timeless Classic By One Of The Best Biographers In History.......2005-08-10

Plutarch in his "Lives Of The Noble Grecians And Romans" written around 100 C.E., sheds new light on Greek and Roman history from their Bronze Age beginnings, shrouded in myth, down through Alexander and late Republican Rome. Plutarch is the lens that we use today to view the Greco-Roman past; his work has shaped our perceptions of that world for 2,000 years. Plutarch writes of the rise of Roman Empire while Gibbon uses his scholarship to advance the story to write about its decline. He was a proud Greek that was equally effected by Roman culture, a Delphic priest, a leading Platonist, a moralist, educator and philosopher with a deep commitment as a first rate writer. Being a Roman citizen, Plutarch was afforded the opportunity to become an intimate friend to prominent Roman citizens and a member of the literary elite in the court of Emperor Trajan.

Plutarch's influence and enormous popularity during and after the Renaissance is legendary among classicist. Plutarch's "Lives", served as the sourcebook for Shakespeare's Roman Plays "Julius Caesar", "Antony and Cleopatra" and "Coriolanus". By the way Plutarch is even the only contemporary source of all the biographical information on Cleopatra, whom he writes about in his biographies of Julius Caesar, Mark Antony and Octavian. Thomas Jefferson wrote to his nephew that there were three books every gentleman had to have familiarity with; Plutarch's "Lives", Livy's "History of Rome" and Virgil's Aeneid. In fact all the founding fathers of note had read Plutarch and learned much from his fifty biographies of noble men of Greece and Rome. When Hamilton, Jay and Madison write "The Federalist Papers" they use many examples of good and bad leadership traits that they read in Plutarch's work. His biographies are a great study in human character and what motivates leaders to decide and act the way they do, this masterpiece has proven to be still prescient today.

If you are truly interested in a classical education, put this book on the top of your list! I recommend this book to anyone who is interested in political philosophy, and history.

Intriguing Lives, Great Biographies.......2001-09-09

Plutarch (or Ploutarchos in Greek), shows in this book that he is one of the best biographers of all time.

He uses written and oral sources to construct the life stories of four important historical figures, Demosthenes, Cicero, Alexander, and Caesar. These are all great personalities, with virtues and vices, wtih strengths and weaknesses, and Plutarch shows both the negative and the postive sides of their character and actions.

Plutarch is both a historian and a storyteller. In this sense he is no different than the popular biographers and historians of today. In addition, he does not detach himself form the events and people he writes about; he frequently makes moral judgements. He praises them when they do something praiseworthy, and he criticizes them when they do something deplorable. That is also not different from the way the current popular historians and biographers approach their topics. Don't Stephen Ambrose or David McCullough also make moral judgements about the people they write about? Don't they also emotionally attach themselves to the people and events they examine? Isn't that what makes their books such a pleasure to read?

Plutarch's books are a pleasure to read, too. That's why they have been popular for more than eighteen hundred years.

A parallel recounting of the stories of persons whose lives had some striking similarities (thus leading to comparison and contrast) is a clever method, and it is difficult to understand why it is hardly ever used today.

The Greek used by Plutarch is relatively easy to understand; the translation is good and, albeit more than eighty years' old, is appealing to today's reader.

So, if you want to improve, or work on, your Ancient Greek, this book is for you.

If you are interested in the history of 4th-Century B.C. Ancient Greece, and the conflicts, intrigues, interpersonal clashes, political systems, and cultural values of that period, this book is for you.

And, finally, if you enjoy reading intriguing life stories, well told, this book is definitely for you.

Action and Words.......2000-08-02

Is the sword mightier than the pen? It certainly is in the short term going by the lives featured here. Alexander and Caesar were the greatest conquerors of the ancient world while Cicero and Demosthenes are considered to have been its greatest wordsmiths.

This collection of four lives is further connected by the fact that the two orators opposed the two conquerors, raising important moral questions about freedom and democracy. Demosthenes, a great speaker who was cowardly by nature, saw Alexander and his father Philip as no better than barborous tyrants, while Cicero, who also lacked the military virtues, fought a verbal war to preserve the Roman Republic. Although being spared by their opponents, both Demosthenes and Cicero were finally hunted and killed by their successors.

By today's standards we would condemn Alexander and Caesar as ruthless, bloodthirsty tyrants, however, judging these two great men outside their historical context is grossly unfair. Without Alexander, the Greeks would have continued to fight their petty wars and Hellenic culture would have remained confined to a small corner of the Mediterranean. As for Caesar's usurpation of power, it was vital for Rome's survival to separate government from politics as the constant electioneering, bribery, partisan strife, riots, plots, and military coups were causing anarchy at the heart of the Republic.

Writing at a time when a strong Imperial system was safeguarding Hellenic culture and prosperity throughout the Mediterranean, it is not surprising that Plutarch saw Alexander and Caesar in such a positive light.

Whatever message he may wish to convey, Plutarch's writing is full of delights, focusing on character traits, interesting quotes, great events, and always going off on those wonderful tangents about natural history, superstitions, or the customs of far away countries.

These are four interesting biographies. But why buy 4 when there are volumes with 8 or 9, or even ALL the 'Lives' of Plutarch?

You have ancient historians like Polybius, Thucydides, and Seutonius who tell the facts and do not change them. But with Plutarch, it's a different ballgame. Plutarch wants to make the good people look bad and the bad people look good. Try to avoid any book written by Plutarch for all the lives he has written about are sketchy. I was kind enough to give the book two stars so if you actually are resding this, here's my advise: if you have money to blow, get it and try and read it, but don't go out of your way.
