    1 out of 5 stars Dun & Bradstreet Guide-Nancy Dunnan.......2002-04-23

I ordered this book on March 2, 2002 and it still hasn't arrived. How can I rate a book I didn't receive? I wish to delete this book and substitute another but find no procedure to do this. Can you help me do this?

    5 out of 5 stars Great Guide.......1999-04-06

This is really a terrific resource, especially for an investing novice like myself. I would urge anyone who wants to start investing and have no clue how too get this book. It clears up so much confusion and answers so many questions. Its paid for itself and then some already.

4 out of 5 stars Great book for beginners; just use patience.......1999-02-19

This book (which comes out in an updated version every year) is a great way to learn about financial planning, investing, and so forth. The lessons inside can (and SHOULD) be used by anyone.

It might seem overwhelming at first, because it's over 400 pages. Take it in little bits and pieces. It's easy to read, explains all the different things you can do in investing, and broken down in such a way that it works for small investors or big ones, for long-term retirement planning or for "how to live right now" type financial stuff.

5 out of 5 stars This is the best written, most complete investment guide.......1998-10-14

When it comes to investing, whether in stocks, bonds, mutual funds, Treasuries, CDs, real estate, or marbles (yes, marbles), you've got to know the territory. To do that, get this guide -- the best written, most complete, easiest to understand, regularly updated book on investments.

      Book Description

Gordon Brown, Jonathan Sacks, Joseph Stiglitz, Hans Kung, Shirley Williams, and a dozen other leading thinkers in international business and ethics identify the pressing moral issues which global capitalism must answer. How can we develop a global economic architecture which is efficient, morally acceptable, geographically inclusive, and sustainable over time? If global capitalism -- arguably the most efficient wealth creating system currently known to man -- is to be both economically viable and socially acceptable, each of its four constituent institutions (markets, governments, supranational agencies, and civil society) must not only be technically competent, but also be buttressed and challenged by a strong moral ethos. The book includes contributions from leading academics, politicians, and moralists. Recognizing that solutions will not come from any one quarter, and that any serious discussion of a just and equitable system will touch on questions of ethics and faith, the book approaches the issues from a range of different disciplines and forums.

1 out of 5 stars The Usual Suspects.......2003-07-13

In this volume we hear first from Deepak Lal in his essay "History, Morality and Capitalism," a tone-setting essay where the historians such as Louis Dumont and Michael Oakshott are cited in a condensed narrative of the worldwide history of mankind. Here we find Lal takes for granted man's inherent nature as a creature who wishes to "truck and barter," the Smithian assertion that much twentieth century ethnographic research has called into question. Yet Las makes this assertion as confidently as those made for centuries in the West that women have no souls, and that blacks have no right to their bodies, and in the East that Untouchables are unclean.

He moves to the "moral" and "historical" part of his essay by tracing the split between the Western and the Eastern traditional beliefs to the rise of capitalism to the restrictions of the early medieval Catholic Church. The church he claims changed the rules around the traditional distribution of patrimony by creating new laws and moral injunctions with respect to the distribution of wealth to heirs, injunctions which created a widow class who, because they were enjoined to follow the new law against remarriage after the death of a husband were ripe fruit for importunate priests who drew their fortunes into the church treasury. A very lucrative practice, this resulted in fabulous wealth for the medieval church according to Lal.

Lal also explores the Western moral and economic philosophers starting with St. Augustine's vision of the shining city on a hill, then moves to the high Enllightement with Kant's universalistic moral creed which sought to demostrate that man was naturally moral and that that God (though still alive) was not necessary to moral behavior. Lal notes that once Darwin declared "God is blind," and later Nietzche proclaimed that "God is dead" the confusions wrought by ultilitarianism and consequentialism thoroughly dis-enchanted the world. Through one of Nietzche's aphorisms -- "moral sensibilites are nowadays at such cross purposes that to one man a morality is proved by its utility, while to another its utility refutes it" -- the end of idealist philosophy is demonstrated.

Toward the end of the essay he suggests that any movement that would seek to undermine the trajectory of the capitalist economic ethos through a communalist or cooperative approach is "atavistic," and with that one word attempts to dismiss any evidence of or hope for less destructive arrangments among mankind. He uses the word at least three or four times, as if in its repitition it might become the more true. Another word he likes is Ecofundamentalists, a word he takes credit for inventing, and with which he attempts to discredit groups and people around the world who do not readily accede to what business theory eumphemistically calls "externalities," but which most people more simply call "pollution."

He finally ends the essay by suggesting international business consider a Humean common sense perspective. Hume, he says, saw that families have raised children to certain standards of behavior and "golden rule" beliefs for thousands of years without recourse to the potential divisiveness caused by different beliefs of followers of the various world religions diand. He maintains that it is these home truths of human behavior which should be invoked in global economic arrangements as they best represent the most common arrangements of humanity worldwide, a strategy which would avoid the misunderstandings generated between followers of various religions.

Similar to his earlier advancement of the universal creed of "truck and barter," is the practice of the universal home truths. Even if this assertion is to be granted, it prompts one to ask why capitalism should be allowed to piggy-back on these home truths, these relations which are generally altruistic or famlial in nature. Further, one could ask whether it is appropriate for capitialism to rely on these human arrangements given the self-seeking behavior promoted by capitalism. Will it not destroy the very arrangements it is piggy-backing on, or, more pointedly, isn't there ample proof that it has already? This essay is fairly representative of the essays in this volume; a dry, and supposedly "objective" manual designed for international business class and governmental and academic technocrats who have recently been forced by protests all over the world to examine the potential snarls they might run into as the world is remade in the image of the almighty dollar.

              Book Description

The book is designed to provide a conceptual framework for management accounting. The student as well as the practitioner in management accounting should be aware not only of the new multidisciplinary scope of the field but also of the conceptual foundations which justify this extended scope. Unlike most management accounting books which do not introduce or integrate all these foundations and are generally restricted to an exposition of cost accounting techniques, this book both asserts that the management accounting professional needs a grounding in various disciplines and justifies the adaptation of their techniques to managerial problem solving. Five conceptual foundations envisioned for management accounting are presented: accounting foundations, decisional foundations, organizational foundations, behavioral foundations, and strategic foundations. A recurrent theme in each of these chapters is that a failure to grasp any of these conceptual foundations of management accounting may result in deficiencies in the management accounting system and inadequacies in the provision of the diverse services required by both the small and the complex organizations of today.

                              Book Description

The remarkable story of one English family during the tumultuous seventeenth century, as revealed through their original letters and documents, which paint an extraordinarily accurate and detailed picture of life in England, Europe, and even the American colonies.

"To know the Verneys is to know the seventeenth century," Adrian Tinniswood writes in this brilliant new book. The Verney family's centuries-long practice of saving every piece of paper that came into their possession-amassing some 100,000 pages of family and estate letters and documents-resulted in the largest and most complete private collection of seventeenth-century correspondence in the Western world to date.

Given exclusive access to these documents, Tinniswood draws a sweeping portrait of the Verneys and the world among Buckinghamshire gentry in which they lived. In vivid detail Tinniswood introduces us to generations of the family: We meet Edmund Verney, King Charles I's standard bearer, who died in battle during the English Civil War in 1642 (his hand still clutching the king's standard). Edmund's son and heir, Ralph, struggled to hold the family together after his father's death, but lost the respect of his brothers and sisters because he alone of the family supported the Parliamentarian cause. Parliament, however, suspicious of his royalist connections, hounded him and his family into exile. Ralph's sons fared both better and worse than their father: Jack went to Syria and made a fortune, while Edmund married a girl who was rich, beautiful, and deeply in love with him-but within months of the marriage she succumbed to insanity.

Rigorously researched, intensely insightful, and alive with drama, The Verneys is narrative history at its very best: fascinating, surprising, and enthralling.

In one respect, I'm jealous of the Verneys. I keep every letter I receive too (they are ever fewer and further between in this age of e-mail), but will historians write about me? Well, if I really wanted them to I should have gotten knighted, or at least had children.

And therein lies the respect in which I am not jealous of the Verneys. The main character, Sir Ralph Verney, and his wife went through seven pregnancies and yet only one of Ralph's children, Jack, outlived him. That one had to travel all the way to what is now Syria to make his fortune before returning home in his late thirties and finding a wife at the age of 40. Guess there's hope for me yet. (His wife was 15 -- I won't hope for that.)

Jack was not intended to enter the peerage, although he eventually did. That was supposed to be left to his older brother Mun (or Edmund, after Sir Ralph's father); but Mun predeceased Ralph along with both of his male children. His third child, a daughter, died childless, although married (indeed she had been married several years when she died at 21. The extended marriage negotiations which occur at several intervals in the book make one very glad for the ritual of dating, which is just more fun all around). Jack lost two wives, but does not appear to have lost a single child -- which by the standards of the late seventeenth century makes him extraordinarily lucky. Indeed, a careful reading of "The Verneys" will make any reader glad he lives in the 21st century.

"The Verneys" is a true story in which eldest sons take up their father's land and (if any) a title upon his death, along with everything which is their father's, and then take over the lives of the rest of their relatives. This was standard procedure at the time and has been invoked to explain the British Empire itself (the sum, supposedly, of the endeavors of younger sons from Britain proper). Ownership of land was everything and brought with it the opportunity to live a life of ease, as most of your income would consist of rent paid by your tenants.

Perhaps not surprisingly, the most sympathetic characters in the book are usually those other than the eldest sons in each generation, although Tinniswood tells the story in such a way that Sir Ralph himself is a strong contender for most sympathetic. Sir Ralph's youngest sisters marry poor men for love and escape into obscurity, whereas his nearer sisters make radically unhappy marriages with handpicked suitors. The ultimate fate of the family as it moved on from the seventeenth century is told in a preface, which is there to tell the story of how historians came into the possession of the tens of thousands of letters from the generations which make the book. The book is an ideal companion piece to "The World We Have Lost" or any other book about early modern England; or it can be read by itself, to introduce a reader to the era. I give it four stars.

                              5 out of 5 stars Illuminating History.......2007-08-12

Well I found this a fascinating family and a revealing history of 17th century Britain. The author supplements the family letters with a through explanation of the period and the Verney's close involvement with it especially the English Civil War. Also, the book gives one a personal involvement with this delightful family. I would put the book down then quite soon be drawn back to it wondering what the Verneys were up to now. Can't get better history than this. Kudos to the author!

3 out of 5 stars Fascinating Family - Why Not a Fascinating Book?.......2007-07-16

This is one of those books that I wanted to love. I can't say anything negative about the writing or the scholarship on display here. It's solid, lucid and once in a while even witty. So why was this book such heavy going? I've managed to read three-quarters of it and I don't have an explanation.

The Verneys themselves are an interesting bunch. One became a pirate on the Barbary Coast. The wife of another went insane. They struggled through the turmoil of the English Civil War. And they kept every letter they ever received. With many of the same ingredients this should have been as riveting a read as Stella Tillyard's Aristocrats but for me it was not. The closest I can come to an explanation is that the Verneys actually offer too many facts. We know many of the details of their lives yet comparatively little about their inner lives.

This is a well-written book. If you are a student of the English Civil War or 17th Century England this is well worth your time. For the general history reader I would advise reading a few pages of this at random before buying.

                              Book Description

"From Fish to Colossus" tells the little-known story of the German Lorenz cipher machine and how its messages were broken at Bletchley Park during World War II. The Lorenz machine enciphered five bit Baudot coded teleprinter messages prior to transmission via radio or landlines. The radio messages were first intercepted by the British in 1941. A method of deciphering was devised at BP that depended only upon the statistics of a single message; this method led to the necessity for fast digital processing machines. The most sophisticated of these was Colossus, which required 2,500 vacuum tubes. By the end of WW II thirteen Colossi were in operation.

The development of the deciphering algorithm is described as well as the design of the Colossus and its predecessors. Most of the research material used in this book was either declassified in 1996 by the National Security Agency or was released in 2000 to the Public Records Office (UK).

5 out of 5 stars Excellent, for what it does.......2006-11-10

I purchased both this book and Jack Copeland's "Colossus: The Secrets of Bletchley Park's Code-breaking Computers" at the same time, and I'm glad to have done so. Copeland's book provides information on many of the personalities and contains sections by some of the individuals who made the breakthroughs, but this book contains more details of the mathematics and is easier to understand. (I also recommend Frank Carter's pamphlets sold by Bletchley Park, which seem to be currently unavailable.)

The breaking of the German Lorenz cipher radioteletype is fundamentally different from the breaking of the Enigmas in that statistical methods are of greater importance and the rotor wiring of a Turing-Welchman Bombe performs a much more complex logical operation at each step than the logical operations possible on the Heath Robinson and Colossus. With a correct crib, only a few possibilities for the rotor order and starting position show up on a Bombe. The Heath Robinson and Colossus breaking depend on correlations in two letter combinations of German military text and these correlations survive (slightly) the modulo-two addition of the psuedo-random cipher text. For this reason, short Enigma messages can be broken, but only much longer Lorenz messages (fortunately, the messages were used for army group level communications and the messages tended to be long). As with Enigma, it took some pretty egregious mistakes by operators to cause the initial breakins by analysts. Cragon carefully leads the reader step-by-step through the logic of breaking the codes, with short examples worked out in full. If you want to understand just how it was done, read this book.

This book also contains many of the details of the circuitry on the Heath Robinsons and Colossi, though some of the schematics are poorly printed (the crucial thyratron ring in Figure 8.14 is unreadable), as are most of the half-tone photographs.

4 out of 5 stars Very interesting, well researched, quite technical.......2006-03-10

This pamphlet is very thoroughly researched and contains the details of how the cipher machine worked and how the cipher was broken, from hand methods up to Colossus. If you are not used to thinking about binary logic then the details of the decryption might be very difficult to understand. However the content is fascinating because it reveals the very first stages in the development of the computer: from mechanical, through relays, then valves, all in a few years, but not yet quite with the idea of the stored program (the program was set by using switches and plugs, hard-coding the machine for each task). It even includes some circuit diagrams, though it doesn't matter if you can't understand them (if you can, they're fascinating, honest!) The pamphlet is obviously self-published and in places could do with some review.

                                Book Description

How do we picture urban life and formulate our experience of it? Tales of the City brings together the academics' abstract tales with the vivid stories about a particular city, Milton Keynes, and the often moving self narrations of its residents. It explores the role of story-telling processes for the creative constructing of experience, with particular attention to personal narrations. The story that is now emerging, told by many individual actor narrators, is of the city as a natural setting for human life, in stark contrast to the pessimistic anti-urban tales of many academic narrators. Drawing on narrative studies, cultural and linguistic anthropology and social theory, Professor Finnegan skillfully examines the narrative conventions and cultural implications of our multiple tales of the city, and relates them to profound mythic themes about urban life, community, and to the creative role of the active, reflecting individual.

The theft from Bletchley Park in 2000 of the legendary Enigma machine, the device used by the Allies to decode German messages during World War II, was an altogether novel and frightening twist on recent history. Closely followed by the British media, the theft of the Enigma machine was later revealed to be part of a well-orchestrated hate campaign against Bletchley Park's new director, Christine Large. Hijacking Enigma is her story, a harrowing insider's look at what's it's like to be at the centre of a complex cat-and-mouse game and media frenzy.

                                                Book Description

Clara Lowenburg Moses: Memoir of a Southern Jewish Woman shares the story of one of Natchez's most interesting residents. Born in 1865 to Isaac and Ophelia Lowenburg and the granddaughter of Jewish community founders John and Jannette Mayer, Clara grew up in an affluent and influential family. In the 1870s her father served as Natchez's first Jewish mayor, and her maternal aunts and uncles held important economic, civic, and social leadership positions before, during, and after the Civil War.

Clara's unpublished memoir, from which Machlovitz draws material for her book, reveals a complex and fascinating life. As a Jew in a predominantly Protestant town, Clara struggled to define and maintain her Jewish identity. Born and raised in the late nineteenth-century South, she adopted many of the attitudes and characteristics that make the region unique. Her strong will and independent spirit often put her at odds with Victorian notions of women's “proper” roles in society.

Throughout the book, Machlovitz expertly portrays Clara as a product of her time and place and as a unique and free-spirited individual. An introductory chapter explores Natchez Jewry during Clara's lifetime and sets the historical context for her life. Subsequent sections detail her trials and tribulations through adolescence, married life, and widowhood. Clara's world included a “wicked” stepmother, a deeply troubled husband, numerous brushes with death, and many happy days with family and friends.

Some of the book was interesting but it made me happy when I was finally finished and upset that I had payed $15.00 for it.

I found this book to be very amateurish and was obviously written by a woman that needs to get her facts straight. I wouldnt doubt if this "Author" was dating the president of the publishing company.

This was a wonderful book. I hardly knew there were Jews living in the South, especially in 1865! Clara Moses's story was very poignant. Her life had so many fascinating twists and turns. The author does a great job discussing her husband and all his problems. With all she went through in her life, it is a wonder she came out of it so well.

This is history made fun. I recommend the book to anyone interested in the South.
