Brands and Branding (The Economist Series)

Book Description
From new brand development to brand management, from trademark protection to the role of advertising and design,
Brands offers a comprehensive survey of all aspects of branding. Assembling a wide range of "brand experts," this topical and authoritative collection looks, from a variety of perspectives, at the increasingly crucial role that brands have come to play in the international marketplace.
How do legal systems recognize the value of brands to both consumers and producers? How has the concept of branded goods been extended successfully to embrace services and other less tangible "products"? How have some brands come to signify certain social or political ideals, and how do those ideals affect consumer loyalty?
Brands thoroughly addresses these questions, demonstrating that brands are the most valuable assets of today's international companies.

Fresh Perspectives on a Complicated Subject.......2001-07-26
This is an absolutely first-rate collection of 20 separate but inter-related essays in which their authors explain how and why brands are "the new wealth creators." They were edited by Hart and Murphy who co-authored a brief Foreword in which they correctly suggest that brands "are now centre stage: they drive major mergers, and acquisitions; they appear frequently in the balance sheets of their owners; they have vexed legislators involved in updating archaic trademark law; their application now extends to organisations who a few years ago would never have considered themselves as `brands' (charities, utilities, sport's associations, cities, etc.); and they have changed irrevocably the way in which major companies organise and run their businesses." It remains for each reader to determine which essays are of greatest interest and potential value. My personal favorites are Murphy's "What Is Branding" which provides a basic but precise introductory briefing on the subject. He concludes by noting that branding is a creative process. "It uses research techniques and the skills of a number of specialists. But in the end it is about creating distinctness -- in a consumer-relevant fashion." I also admire Fogg's analysis of "Brands as Intellectual Property." (Those who share have a special interest in this subject are urged to check out Lessig's Code and Other Laws of Cyberspace.) Carratu's essay follows, probing even further into "Commercial Counterfeiting" which is, he concludes, "a profitable and growing activity that poses a serious threat to manufacturers of branded products. It is frequently very well funded and organised and is prevalent throughout the world....[Fortunately], brand owners are becoming more vigilant, but the battle has yet to be won." Tragos has much of value to say about "International Branding" as do Andrew about "Brand Revitalisation and Extension" and Hart about "The Future for Brands." For executive-level managers who are either directly or indirectly involved with marketing (in general) and branding (in particular), this really is a "must read."

This book introduced me to an area unknown to me as an individual investor-EXCHANGED TRADED FUNDS (ETF). It was very informative and exciting. I read it and then underlined it,immediately. My Understanding and Confidence Increased with Each Chapter.......2000-10-01
I bought this book because of my confusion with index funds after reading different advertisements from newspapers and websites. The result of my learnings are three limit orders I just placed for different sector funds.
This book is written objectively without a slant towards a specific product. Also, written for the inexperienced as well as the professional trader. It provided some real insights as to how trading is accomplished (in plain English).
The bing "WOW" was seeing how I was being penalized as long term investor in mutual funds because of the annual tax distribution. Also, the majority of funds do not beat the S&P500 index!! Why invest in them when these new investment resources are available?
Highly recommend this book to all levels of investors.

Product Description
Two fundamentally different business models of capitalism are operating in the business world today. One is self-destructive and increasingly corrupt. The other is emergent, flourishing, and inspirational. The author explains the differences between the two and reveals the extraordinary results of the more successful model. Profit for Life draws on nearly forty years of research on the empirical connections between stewardship and profitability.

Review of Profit for Life: How Capitalism Excels by Joseph H. Bragdon.......2007-04-08
Profit for Life shatters the old paradigm that success in business means sucking the life from people and natural resources by viewing both as dispensable commodities. By showing us how success in business--including big business--goes hand-in-hand with respect for human and natural communities, Bragdon frees us from the wrenching misconception that profit and citizenship represent a kind of zero-sum game.
Bragdon unites head and heart in one of the most uplifting books I have ever read. Profit for Life offers hope with a firm footing. I recommend Profit for Life to anyone with an interest in business management, strategic investment, or corporate citizenship.

Book Review for Profit for Life: How Capitalism Excels
by Ann McGee-Cooper
How do you measure the value of servant leadership in business? How can we know it works? These have been two of the most frequently asked questions in our consulting practice over the past 30 years.
In Profit for Life, Jay Bragdon provides us with some compelling answers. He does this by setting aside much of the linear cause-and-effect thinking that drives business these days, and adopts a more rounded, holistic approach that gives us deeper insight into the firm.
The book is based on the experiences of 60 companies - Bragdon's "learning lab" - that broadly represent the industry/sector diversity of the world economy. Throughout the text he describes 16 of these pioneering companies, called the Focus Group. The distinguishing feature of all these firms is their effort to mimic living systems - in the ways they organize, manage and add value. This mental model is radically different from the traditional one that views the firm as a money making machine.
Although it may seem counter intuitive, the living system approach yields vastly superior results than the traditional one. For example, the average equity return of learning lab companies was nearly double the S&P 500 over the past decade; and their excess performance continues as this review is written. Bragdon expects such premium returns will diminish over time as the more effective methods of the living system model become copied and enter the mainstream. Nevertheless, these results are a strong affirmation of the milieu in which servant leadership normally operates.
Servant leadership, to Bragdon, is all about relationships. He says "relational equity" is the foundation on which companies build financial equity. When companies care about people and the things people care about, Employees become inspired and their inspiration cascades into everything they do, including their relationships with customers, suppliers and other key stakeholders.
The raison d'etre of these servant-led firms is value creation - value that permeates all relationships. Companies that excel at such value creation pursue a strategy Bragdon calls "living asset stewardship" (LAS). The fundamental premise of LAS is: Profit arises from life, and must therefore serve life if it is to be sustainable.
To understand the strategic value of living asset stewardship, Bragdon makes a critical distinction between living assets (people and Nature) and non-living capital assets (buildings, equipment and financial reserves). We see this in three contexts. First, people are closely bonded to Nature - genetically, physically and spiritually - in ways that capital assets are not. Second, living assets are the source of non-living capital assets. And third, because living assets are inherently creative and emergent, their value grows over time rather than depreciating as capital assets do.
The operating leverage in the learning lab and the 16 Focus Group companies resides in the human heart rather than in mechanistic financial gearing. This is supported by the fact that they generate consistently higher returns on equity while carrying substantially lower debt ratios.
Although traditionally managed companies have been adopting some stewardship practices in the past decade, Bragdon finds their approach differs fundamentally from those in his study. In the mechanistic view of these firms, stewardship is an add-on that is subservient to their drive for profit. By contrast, in companies that have adopted the living system model, LAS is deeply woven into the value creation process - reflecting the fact that they see themselves as "living" and therefore integral to, rather than separate from, Nature and society.
Profit for Life builds on the brilliant work of Arie deGeus, former coordinator of Group Planning at Royal Dutch/Shell, and Harvard biologist Edward O. Wilson. DeGeus' classic, The Living Company, noted that long-lived companies had a collective consciousness, were sensitive to their environments, tried to work in harmony with the world around them, and strove to leave a legacy to future generations. Wilson tells us this collective consciousness is an expression of humanity's deep affinity for life, which he calls "biophilia," and that our biophilic instincts have evolved over thousands of generations of natural selection.
In my work as a teacher of servant leadership, I would highlight the paradigm shift Bragdon describes. The mission of leaders in LAS organizations is to serve and grow their people because that is the source of the firm's liveliness and capacity for growth. As Robert K. Greenleaf said: "The first order of business is to build a group of people who, under the influence of the institution, grow taller and become healthier, stronger and more autonomous." That seminal quote is used twice in the book to describe the power and generative capacity of LAS.
I highly recommend this book and will be using it regularly in our practice.

An Extraordinary Book: A Must Read.......2006-11-26
I intend to recommend Profit for Life to all my current MBA students. Next fall I am team teaching an MBA core course that combines Operations Management and Managerial Accounting. I intend to make the case that your book should be required reading and part of the course.
I became familiar with the work of W. Edwards Deming in 1990 and attended one of his four day seminars a year later. I also began to follow Peter Senge's work and later read Margaret Wheatley's book, Leadership and the New Science. Tom Johnson's book, Profit Beyond Measure, has been required reading in my Advanced Managerial Accounting elective at the MBA level.
Bragdon's book has brought the ideas, theories, and concepts discussed by these individuals together for me in a way that I could not have imagined. More importantly, he has not only taken their ideas to the next level, but done it in a way that provides a tangible blue print for how to change our current style of command and control management with its focus on profit maximization to a LAS Theory of Management.
The use of the sixteen focus companies from the LAMP INDEX and the author's ability ability to clearly show the distinctions in their style of management from the traditional management models that continue to be taught in almost all business schools, and the success these companies have achieved not just financially, gives those of us hoping to change management education and core business curriculums a new hope.
Thank you for such an outstanding book.

Excellent, highly readable information.......2006-11-18
This is not one of those lightweight business books that repeats its Chapter 1 message over and over. It's chock full of research-based information that anyone involved in the sustainability movement should have. The publisher is Peter Senge's non-profit, so if you're familiar with his excellent work over the years, this would make a great addition to your library. The author's passion for his subject is obvious from page one.
Book Description
In any given year over 70% of mutual fund managers fail to beat the broader market. So many investors are asking, "Why am I paying a premium in management fees for mediocre performance?" Canadians no longer need to be stuck in this trap, as they can create a portfolio of low cost index funds that directly track the market. This major trend is shaking the foundations of the mutual fund industry, as more Canadians come to understand this innovative style of investing.
Readers will learn: Exactly what indexes are and how they behave; Why index investing should be a core component of your investing strategy; Why, in today's market, it is so difficult for professional fund managers to consistently outdo the index; What index products are available in Canada and how you can invest in them; Why index products can help with effective asset allocation; How some products can give you more foreign exposure in your RRSP

Customer Reviews:
It's not just ethics in the workplace; it's ethics for anyone........2007-08-28
"Sleeping Dogs" is an appropriate name for this tiny, quick-read reference book since even those of us with the best intentions allow our ethics, like a drowsy canine, to drift off to sleep with time. Col. Mazzeo gives our slumbering ethical Fido an abrupt kick in the butt with his imaginary scenarios of familiar occurrences. His anecdotes are written in a "what if this happened to you" style and the reader is asked to mentally supply a "this is what I'd do" answer. After each imaginary occurrence the author applies a simple, 3-question test which determines the ethical appropriateness of the reader's imagined solution: Who benefits? Who suffers? What if the roles were reversed? I liked Col. Mazzeo's little book on ethics; and read it, cover to cover, in one sitting.
Business Ethics--it's not an Oxymoron Anymore!!!.......2005-12-06
Now who would have ever thought a book about business ethics would not only be interesting, but thought-provoking and engaging!?! Not me--even when my bosses told me to research and create a course about the topic. "Sure sounds like an oxymoron," I grumbled to myself. But my research uncovered Mr. Mazzeo's book and my course has not been the same since! He provides a quick and easy 3-step process to decide if indeed a business issue is an ethical dilemma. Then, he provides ideas on how to handle it, and he does it all without pointing fingers or pretending to be holier-than-thou. He even provides some hilarious quotes!
I contacted him to be sure I could use his ideas (it's ethics, remember?) and he was most gracious and gave me ideas and tips on how best to deliver the course.
I have to run and order more of his books to give out after class....

Book Description
The 2000 Miller GAAP Guide organizes accounting pronouncements alphabetically by topic under two general areas: generally accepted accounting principles and specialized industry accounting principles. Pronouncements covering the same subject are compiled and incorporated in a single chapter so that the authoritative information is immediately accessible.
Material can be located several ways: The IMPRESS Table of Contents locates the chapter in which a particular pronouncement is discussed. The Index provides quick, accurate reference to needed information. The 2000 Miller GAAP Guide is written in clear, understandable language. Each pronouncement is discussed in a comprehensive format that makes it easy to understand and apply. Practical illustrations and examples demonstrate and clarify specific accounting principles. The Practice Pointers throughout this edition do just that: They point out in plain English how to apply the standards just discussed.
Observations enrich the discussion by presenting interesting aspects of GAAP, such as conflicts with the authoritative literature. Although no attempt is made to resolve apparent errors and conflicts in the promulgated pronouncements, these items are brought to your attention. To facilitate research, the 2000 Miller GAAP Guide includes extensive codification references to pertinent paragraphs of the original pronouncements. The Disclosures Index contains many of the required and recommended disclosures currently in use. It was designed to assist the preparer, reviewer, or auditor of financial statements in determining whether the necessary and most current disclosures have been made. The Self-Study CPE Program divides the material in the 2000 Miller GAAP Guide into four separate modules for efficient and thorough study.

Book Description
With real-life examples drawn from communities using dynamic, innovative approaches to problem-solving efforts at the local level, this issue highlights successful programs of regional social changes which can become profound regenerative agents of increasing citizen involvement at the national level. Lessons learned in systems change and government reform in Indianapolis, Indiana, and Charlotte, North Carolina, also demonstrate that although there is no one set path for systems reform, a community's development becomes linked to the changes that occurred before and contributes in some way to additional reforms in the future.
The issue offers additional examples of communities leading the way in such areas as strategic planning, community development, systems change, racial understanding, and political reform. Contributors also detail the five principles and practices that communities have used to recreate a successful, citizen-based approach to politics.
In a special focus section on Civic Infrastructure, Allan Wallis, Jarle P. Crocker, and Bill Schechter explore the perspectives of academics, public advocates, philanthropists, and community development practitioners on the uses of social capital. This article is Part One in a two-part series that concludes in NCR Volume 87, Number 4.
Customer Reviews:
very good book.......2005-10-08
I found this to be a very good book and very educational. I am painting my 19th century house using it as a guide. In the previous review someone wrote:
"Unfortunately, there are precious few old drawings and the ones they do have are done in muted browns and beiges. Now, I know they didn't have color photos back in those days, but I do wish they'd included more color pictures (drawings) of these old houses."
This person has obviously missed the point of the book. Did you read it? Those _are_ color drawings and those "muted browns and beiges" _were_ the colors used back then. People have a stereotype of 19th century colors as supposedly being bright and contrasty; this is due to the colorist movement in San Francisco back in the 70s, but is not appropriate when seeking 19th century accuracy. The crazy row-house colors of San Francisco are modern interpretations; whereas the Victorians preferred earth tones. The authors go at length to explain this with drawings and historic reproductions that are accurate in color.
My only gripe with this book is that there should be more photographs of 19th houses painted historically. I think more photos would give home restorers more ideas to pick from.
Quite a good reference book for old house lovers (like me!).......2000-05-02
This book is over 110 pages and every page has at least one picture, and most have two or three.
Beyond the good information re: color schemes, there is a lot of information in this book about the 101 details (fretwork, finials, porches, etc) of an old house.
Unfortunately, there are precious few old drawings and the ones they do have are done in muted browns and beiges. Now, I know they didn't have color photos back in those days, but I do wish they'd included more color pictures (drawings) of these old houses.
There are also some very interesting old paint ads - such as one that suggests the right house paint is *the* key to health and happiness. The book also contains plenty of written information and history, which is interesting reading.
And the photos/drawings offer a nice blend of the ostentatious Queen Annes and by contrast, the simple and modest "Builder's Style" homes.
I'm an old house purist trying to redo my simple old home as authentically as possible. This book is a good resource for that.
Excellent detail, very helpful.......1999-07-07
I really enjoyed all the details and information so that I can paint my own Victorian home. Good color combinations, great historical information. I do wish there had been a few more photos of correctly painted homes.

I didn't know it was an old eddition with outdated figures until it arrived in the mail. I went back to the page I bought it on and then noticed the disclaimer for the pictures being from the newer eddition. The newer book has different projects and more current prices.

The Facades Handbook is a textbook for practitioners of architecture, as well as structural and environmental engineers who wish to broaden their study beyond the information provided in the “Walls” chapter of the Modern Construction Handbook. The six chapters examine facades from the standpoint of the primary material used in their construction, from metal to glass, concrete, masonry, plastics and timber. Each set of three double page spreads explains a specific form of construction which is accompanied by drawn and annotated details. Throughout the book, built examples by high profile designers are used to illustrate specific principles. As is the case in the Modern Construction Handbook, the techniques described can be applied internationally.

Good bood, but only if..........2002-11-18
You're a Home Inspector or simply in search of picture after picture with little other detail other than technical information. If you are looking for advice on how to repair or fix items, DO NOT BUY this or other Carson Dunlop books in this series, or the - The Illustrated Home. Carson Dunlop is a firm out of Canada that does produce good materials for Home Inspectors, but these are not "how to" manuals, nor are these books good for the average home owner.Kind of sad when people write misleading reviews to simply increase sales. On the positive - DO BUY this book if you are simply looking for very detailed technical information.
Part of the "Illustrated Home" series.......2000-11-24
With over 500 illustrations, "Structure, Roofing and the Exterior" shows you exactly what the finished job should look like.
Alan Carson and Robert Dunlop prove in this easy-to-use book that pictures really are worth a thousand words. Through clearly detailed illustrations Carson and Dunlop walk you through your home, showing you just what your repairs and renovations should look like, inside and out. This book is an excellent tool for the new home owner or home inspector, showing you which pitfalls to avoid and what to look for when searching for potential problems in the structure, roof or exteriorof your or your client's home.

Book Description
The popular language of status-conscious architecture is explored in this account of the notorious do-it-yourself remodels clustered on the fringe of Beverly Hills in West Hollywood. These former stucco bungalows have been transformed by their owners into distinctive visual statements. As if they were stage sets, the exteriors of these houses have been treated as interiors, with urns and finials placed on rooftops like bibelots on a mantel, and windows and panels of trellis arranged as though they were pictures on a wall. The result is a lively architectural vernacular, well documented with "before and after" photos, interviews, and construction details.

This book I advise for architects, facade engineers and building inspectors.
The book describes the facade and roofing technology and deterioration mechanism, based on case-to-case examples, written by an experienced author.
Based on British climate, which is similar to the climate of many other parts of the world.
Very comprehensive and very unique.

Customer Reviews:
Gareth Evens Biography.................2002-09-30
I thought this might be an insightful book about the "rise and fall" of The Stone Roses. Instead I received a literary course in band management. It's too bad Mick Middles could only speak to a bitter and hindsightful ex-manager to piece together such a complicated yet simple story. Had more interviews been done with the band I might have enjoyed the book. In short this book would be appropriate for anyone interested in exploiting a young talented band. For those who are interested in understanding The Stone Roses, buy another book.
Legendary.......2000-04-03
Mick Middles biography is an excellent and comprehensive attempt to catalogue the rise and fall of the legendary Manchester band. Fuller than John Robb's book - The Stone Roses and the Resurrection of British Pop - Breaking into Heaven: The Rise and Fall of the Stone Roses traces the roots of the band back to the early childhoods of Ian Brown and John Squire through the punk inspired Patrol era to the heady days of 1989 when the Stone Roses looked likely to conquer the world. The portrait of Gareth Evans, the Stone Roses' ebullient manager at the height of their success, is amusing and revealing, and the postscript on Ian Brown's up and down career since the demise of the band is also fascinating. A must for any true Stone Roses fan.

Book Description
A series of memoirs, journal entries and letters by Dr. Jack Berkowitz, the protagonist of the novel "Blessings," covering the years 1977-1986. This book is a sequel to "Blessings." In these richly detailed short pieces, Dr. Berkowitz describes his days in the company of his wife's Navajo family, sharing their joys and tragedies, engaging in building a cabin, and farming a small cornfield. These journals represent a testament to the warmth, tolerance, and joy of life which found expression in the title of the earlier work, "Blessings."
