I'm missing something here: the apparent feasibility of the author's stock-picking techniques with my little PC?

I found the floppy disk accompanying the book unreadable. My local computor builder/dealer/consultant couldn't read it either. My computer kept calling for another disk, which did not come with the book I ordered or with its replacement. The disk seems to herald back to the days of DOS; whatever, I'm lost.

More on the downside, the valueline online survey is unmanageable for me (I got a masters in English and I've been studying and investing stocks for 25 plus years). Determining the average for numerous search fields (market cap., P/E ratio, Price/Book ratio, etc.) that O'Shaughnessy calls for cannot be done with the basic online service. A simple piece of data such as "dividend" or "yield" can be tough to pin down with 7-8 different kinds listed (estimated, quarterly, current, etc.).

The book, in spite of my moronic protests, is praiseworthy. The methods make sense. There is something beautiful about their simplicity - the step by step processes of narrowing down fields in order to determine the best bargains (value) or the best upside potential (growth).

A guiding principle of O'Shaughnessy's argument - the answer to the nagging question of why so many portfolio managers fail - is very simple: they either have no useable plan or they do, but they don't stick to it.

I'm convinced this book has the answer. It's just so damn grueling to apply the principles; a dozen calls and emails to valueline still leave me clueless.

Similar to his other books but still interesting.......2001-11-16

His theory is that by analyzing the holdings of top mutual funds, and then determining how they differ most from the index, you can then emulate the mutual fund's performance.

You can even improve on the performance of mutual funds because you can follow their strategy in a more consistent fashion and because you can reduce their strategy to its essential elements. Often even good fund managers are not entirely consistent.

An example of a strategy is: from the stocks with

12 month EPS gain >20% and
26 week % price change>20% and
Last Qtr EPS % chg > 20% and
Valueline Timeliness Rank <=5

Pick the ten stocks with highest estimated EPS growth for next year .

He explains how to do all this in detail and derives some good looking strategies. Risk is taken into account and proves to be a very useful measure of the reliability of a strategy.

You can use the same techniques to evaluate your broker's recommendations, and the advice from books and newletters. Do they follow a strategy or is it just random tips and hunches?

He also showed how various fund managers changed strategy quite radically without announcing it eg Magellan in the early 1990s.

There are some good tips on how to avoid common traps when using quantitive strategies eg using single variable strategies.

He also explores combining various strategies and shows how to build your own.

He did not really prove his theory which is that noone really makes money by individual stock picks, it is all strategy.

As a final caveat, if you don't like numbers you will not like this book. But it seems you cannot succeed in investment without being very friendly with numbers.

Certainly worth the price for the mechanically inclined..........2000-10-02

It's been 6 years since this book was published, and I believe that many of the fundamental items identified by the author still apply. Most investors are looking for rules for identifying good stocks, and using these techniques offers someone a way to actually test the results they could expect - at least if you're willing to use a service like ValueLine. The only downside of the book was in the lack of exploring additional ideas - things like shorter holding periods, stop-loss strategies, diversification across industries, etc. For the price, buy it!

Using your computer, O'Shaughnessy shows you how to find out the leading factors that mutal funds use to pick stocks. He provides insite and information on both value and growth investing. It is geared toward the long term investor. The book shows how using your computer you can enter in these factors and screen 1,600 stocks. The ones that match your screen will show up on the screen. This beats sifting through stock tables.

This book is worth reading!.......2004-02-08

In 315 breathless pages this book covers the history of US Corporate accountability struggles and the more recent activist battles over sweatshops, dolphin safe tuna, tobacco, Burma, and rule making in the global economy. In every case the book discusses how the campaign looked to the consumer, the activist, and what the lingering impact of it is. Every chapter ends with at least a couple of pages of "lessons learned".

Much space is devoted to the topic of Brands. In the chapter on sweatshops Nike gets lots of attention, primarily because everybody is familiar with them, but also because as a Global Brand they have a name to protect. The authors discuss how the activist goal was to put the company in a situation where "all they had to do to rehabilitate their Brand was stop using sweatshops for manufacturing." They acknowledge how it would be much harder to go after the no-name manufacturers with clothes on the same racks, even though their sleaze problems could easily be worse. After reading the book I had a better sense of what a Brand is all about.

Another topic that gets a lot of attention is how many of our consumer issues have global implications. In the tuna campaign the activists thought they had a great victory when they got Congress to pass a law against the practices that killed so many dolphins. Unfortunately, the tuna fishermen responded to the law by "offshoring", changing their boat registration so they could fly a foreign flag. Sometimes they didn't even move where they fished or docked, they just did their registration paperwork in Mexico or some more exotic Capital. The tobacco companies responded to the shrinking of the American cigarette market by developing markets overseas. Over and over the idea that we need a coordinated international response to this kind of stuff comes up.

The lesson is driven home in spades in the case of Burma. Activists worked to get local jurisdictions to vote to stop doing business with the totalitarian regime in power there, a strategy that had worked well in South Africa's case. They were undermined by international agreements that made such initiatives "illegal barriers to trade". Even so, a lot of companies were talked out of doing business there. The country was forced to hold elections, but the pressure was not great enough that the people elected were actually given power. I could almost see frustrated activists saying "well at least we made something happen".

The last case recounted is "The Battle In Seattle", where activists shut down the WTO in the full limelight of all kinds of press. They show how many lessons learned about using the Internet to get the word out in earlier campaigns like the Burma one kept the corporations from fully controlling the spin on the news the way they had in previous eras. The authors consider it a great victory that the previously quiet backwater of international trade negotiations was now promoted to the front page of political debate. Told from the activist point of view, the book does a good job of tying all these issues together.

People have the power to redeem the work of fools (P. Smith).......2003-12-06

You come away from this book feeling that people do make a difference, even though progress often happens at a slower pace than we would like, and success often is followed by backlash. The book is well organized, not as a barrage of information, but as a series of well developed stories that have a common thread. Corporate globalization is presented as the race to the bottom by which capital moves freely to wherever cost is lowest, leading to investment where environmental standards are the most lax and exploitation the most severe. The prescriptions for change are debatable, yet worthy of debate.

I HATE that textbook publishers print out a new edition, with basicaly the same problems as the last edition (only the numbers change). However, to be fair, this is a very clear book, has good examples that follow the exercies in the book. Probably one of the better accounting books I have seen. Also has some chapters of introduction to finance. Overall would recommend.

This book is what I would call an o.k. textbook. It's not horribly hard to sit down & read or understand. On the other hand it's not light reading. There are some areas in later chapters that are not covered as well as I has hoped.

Extremely powerful and uplifting book on Jewish observance.......1998-06-08

This book was very special for me....it is an extremely powerful and energizing account of an Hasidic rabbi and what he did to help fellow jews before and during the Holocaust in Poland. It also documents through very good research how he continued to keep mitzvot during these brutally severe times. Examples include wearing tefillin and davening in concentration camps, buying a ram's head and making and blowing the shofar during Rosh Hashana, fasting during Yom Kippur, baking matza during Passover, lighting candles for Hanukah, not eating any food from the concentration camp kitchens since they were not kosher, and building and eating in a succah during Succos. Very powerful and unbelievable...and very personally motivating.
