Fascinating glimpse behind the scenes of international business.......2006-03-18
Reviewed by Sandra MacLean for Reader Views (3/06)
The minute you even think of doing business in China, Japan or Korea, do yourself a favour and run out to pick up this book. Author Mia Doucet avoids dry, jargon filled pages as she delivers practical tips you can use to approach these markets, giving your company a greater chance for success. She conveys the excitement of discovering a new culture while remaining tightly focused on what this understanding means for doing business.
Doucet makes getting to know your market a breeze with her easy to understand and easy to use advice. This book is full of intriguing gems of priceless information. Just this one example should rouse your curiosity: Why should you always wear clean socks without holes? (See page 114 for the answer.)
She does a great job of making the culture come to life so business planners can improve their chance of success just by being better informed than their competitors. How better to show your respect than to go the extra mile to gain an understanding of the new environment in which you intend to do business. Moreover, you will get to know some pitfalls you should avoid that could get in the way as you attempt to establish profitable relationships.
Doucet gives you clear advice on where you need to pay attention. Consider this common decision - Do you need an interpreter or a translator? Should you hire at home or do you think you can get by with hiring someone once you arrive? Well, that depends on if you "know whether to kiss, bow or go on a bender." You'll have to read the book to find out the answer! In the end, you'll understand not just what you need to do but why.
For such a meaty book, it is a surprisingly easy read. I'd be tempted to say, "Read this on your flight to the far east," but you will be very glad that you found this information long before you board the plane. Just be sure to take it with you in case you forget some of the details.
This is a book that could help a much broader audience. It's not only useful for those going overseas to do business but it would also give a tremendous advantage to any North American planning to travel in the Pacific Rim countries whether for business, pleasure or as part of volunteer organizations.
Staff members of companies on this continent who host guests from the Pacific Rim would also benefit from this information. Our western customs are so familiar to us that we may not always realize how foreign they are to visitors from other cultures. Imagine how much this greater sensitivity could enhance the experience you plan for future visits with business colleagues from around the world.
Doucet offers the reader a fascinating glimpse behind the scenes of international business. It's a good read even if you have no plans at the moment to move into these markets. When the time does come, you will be very glad you have this resource in your toolbox.
Excellent Resource for the Global Entrepreneur.......2006-03-04
With "China in Motion: 17 Secrets...", Ms Doucet has created a wonderfully useful book for every entrepreneur who is eyeing the Asian markets. With 1.3 billion residents in China alone, EVERY entrepreneur should be setting their sites on the Asian markets. (It is no surprise that this Far Eastern country has earned the moniker, "the new land of opportunity".)
Each and every one of Ms. Doucet's secrets is important. I especially appreciated #4: "Think in terms of a web of relationship". I have found this to be especially important in my dealing with Japanese associates - a very different approach from the typical Western "it's-all-about-me" perspective.
Every business person who wants to do business in China, Japan and/or South Korea owes it to themselves to buy this book. The next time I travel to one of these countries, this book will be my closest traveling companion.
Very Realistic.......2005-02-04
I was just in China on business and upon returning my sister recommended this book. I was astonished as I was reading it because it described exactly what I had experienced. This is an excellent guide for anyone who would like to do business in China and there is nothing like actually being there and experiencing it. I do highly recommend that you read this book as well as learn Mandarin if you intend to do business in China. My hat is off to Mia! Thank you for providing this wonderful guide.
The very good hand book........2005-01-13
This book has many good quotes and bits of information that will help you understand what it takes and the thinking required to do business in Asia....there are many good hints from the differences in culture to personal habits that may offend the customer....an example "not writing on the back of the business card...and the thinking behind it..." Very well written book.

Customer Reviews:
A tremendous resource .......2007-10-21
This book provides answers for investors who suspect that there must be something beyond the simplistic "buy and hold" and "asset allocation" advice widely quoted to investors today. The author is a broker and certified financial planner. She gives practical explanations of defensive strategies such as hedging and stop-loss orders, as well as active investing strategies such as sector rotation. The author is very frank in detailing why there is no perfect investment strategy. There is either a risk, or up-front cost, associated with each strategy presented and the author spells these out. This book is head-and-shoulders above the popular literature offered by such writers as Ric Edelman and Suzie Orman. Highly recommended.
Required reading for investors.......2007-04-06
As someone with no background in investment, I was a littled worried that this book would be over my head. A little of it was, but the vast majority of the information was not. Highly recommended for it's insight into typical bad investment strategies (e.g., buy and hold) and more creative investment strategies (e.g., selling covered calls). This book could make (and even more importantly) save you a LOT of money.
Great Book on Intermediate Investing.......2003-11-01
This book is different from many other books on investing.
I have seen a lot of books which cover basic terminology but don't
give many ideas on strategy. I don't recommend it as a first
book on investing - the author explains some terminology but
generally assumes the readers know the basics. If you have
the basics down but you are not sure what to do with your
knowledge, this book is very useful. It deals with such material as
use of puts and calls as part of a conservative
investment strategy, differences in investment strategies needed
in taxable and non taxable accounts and effective use of different investment
vehicles - stocks, mutal funds, EFTs etc.
Definitely worth space on your bookshelf.
Helpful stratagies.......2002-06-19
The title of this book attracted me immediately because of my concerns about my financial security in the current market. I hoped that it would give me practical tips that I would be able to put into practice. I was not disappointed. The book explained in a language that I, a not very sophisticated investor, could understand.
Excellent, experienced sober strategies and advice.......2002-05-16
Practical, levelheaded strategies and advice that obviously come from experience. Not full of polemics like many investment books...every paragraph adds to the reader's understanding toward direct application. You could read many of the popular investment books and never run into the techniques she presents which are an essential part of any portfolio manager's arsenal. While the book's title might seem to be for fearful investors, the book is actually focused on returns, and the techniques should allow an investor to make more aggressive moves in line with their goals when one has some control over the risks, through hedging, negative correlations within the portfolio, appropriate investment vehicles, and using options for controlled profit-taking and safer entries and exits even when entering into more volatile positions for which the risk could otherwise be prohibitive.
Book Description
In an age of ethical decay at organizations of every type, a call is being sounded for accountability. Accordingly, companies must educate their employees and executives regarding acceptable practice. The Business Ethics Activity Book presents an array of provocative activities that will help encourage a more ethical approach to:
* Leadership: promoting courage, commitment, and moral responsibility * Workplace conduct: building an ethical environment on individual behavior * Salesmanship: exploring the relationships between sellers and their customers * Management: leading employees by example in daily situations * Teamwork: fostering group behavior that reflects the company's moral outlook
Each section features an interview with a leading ethicist, and every activity provides step-by-step instructions. Also, discussion prompts and suggestions for variations enable the trainer or leader to expand each exercise's application. These exercises will push organizations to challenge the climate of questionable or unexamined ethics and recommit themselves to responsible business methods.

Not Worth The Money.......2007-01-09
I purchased this book for my college students in hopes that it would be some type of hands on activity about Ethics that would make a statement. This book was of no value to me what so ever. It was a waste of money.

Book Description
Paul Light has captured the spirit of innovation. It is not about spectacular acts by individuals who labor against the odds, but about the hard work of building organizations in which innovation is expected and possible. It is about tilling the soil so that ideas can flourish. Anyone who wants to take their organization forward toward natural innovation should read this book.
--Walter F. Mondale
Any organization can innovate once. The challenge is to innovate twice, thrice, and more?to make innovation a part of daily good practice. This book shows how nonprofit and government organizations can transform the single, occasional act of innovating into an everyday occurrence by forging a culture of natural innovation.
Filled with real success stories and practical lessons learned, Sustaining Innovation offers examples of how organizations can take the first step toward innovativeness, advice on how to survive the inevitable mistakes along the way, and tools for keeping the edge once the journey is complete.
Light also provides a set of simple suggestions for fitting the lessons to the different management pressures facing the government and nonprofit sector. Unlike the private sector, where innovation needs only to be profitable to be worth doing, government and nonprofit innovation must be about doing something worthewhile. It must challenge the prevailingwisdom and advance the public good. Sustaining Innovation gives nonprofit and government managers a coherent, easily understood model for making this kind of innovation a natural reality.
Customer Reviews:
Great case studies; you go Minnesota!.......1999-08-16
Book opens with a Zoo, and I was hooked. I read the book voluntarily for a nonprofit management class, and I truly enjoyed it (which I cannot say for the big ol' Jossey-Bass Handbook and others I was forced to read). If you're familiar with the framework systems of Bolman and Deal, this is written from the Human Resources perspective and shows innovative ways of allowing creativity to enhance the mission of the nonprofit (or government agency) while using great examples based on 26 programs in Minneapolis and surrounding areas of Minnesota. If this interests you, I also suggest "Sacred Hoops" by Phil Jackson, and a book I just ordered called "Hope, Human, and Wild" about the Parana capitol city of Curitiba whose mayor is very into the planning part of Human Resource frame, very systems framed as well. So I give it two thumbs up. Go Light. Stay thin, baby.
Book Description
Change is an ever-present and powerful force in today's fast-paced world. To keep an organization clearly focused on fulfilling its mission, nonprofit leaders must develop specific, strategic initiatives to meet the challenges of a constantly evolving environment.
Changing by Design offers a proactive approach to both designing and implementing change initiatives within nonprofit organizations. By addressing three key areas?coordinated leadership on the part of the chief executive and the board, creative innovation in deciding what needs to change and how to change it, and effective implementation of new ideas and programs, this book presents a balanced, comprehensive model for successfully managing change in today's nonprofit.
Illustrated by real-life case studies, Changing by Design shows how to:
- Design and manage a change plan?from initial analysis through implementation
- Partner effectively with the board in leading change
- Encourage and unleash creativity and innovation in developing change initiatives
- Effectively involve staff in designing and implementing change
- Protect change initiatives from becoming sidetracked by day-to-day pressures
- Recognize and deal with barriers to change
To successfully fulfill its mission and remain relevant to the world around it, an organization must not only be ready and able to adapt to change but must also develop a culture where change is used as a strategic, creative tool for growth. Changing by Design provides the innovative change management approach that will prepare any nonprofit organization to both maintain and expand its capacity to address the serious economic and social issues facing today's turbulent world.
Customer Reviews:
Change in all types of organisations........2000-11-06
Though the book is written for nonprofit organisations, it can be used by anyone studying the subject of change management or transitions. The role of the CEO as the chief change agent is critical in any change strategy. Chapter 3 & 4 clearly explains the importance. It is not just applicable to non-profit organisations; it applies to all organisations. Chapters on creativity and implementation are useful too as they offer some good suggestions. One thing I will find useful when I refer to this book in future is the summary at the end of each chapter. This is invaluable when you occasionally want to dip into a book in future to find a little 'nugget' of information

The 201 Questions Every Homebuyer and Homeseller Must Ask!.......2005-02-06
This book was PUBLISHED in 1995. That means it was likely WRITTEN in 1994. In the past eleven years real estate law and regulation has changed SO much that a very high percentage of the information and recommendations are outdated. In fact, the entire Second Chapter on Agency Law describes principles and laws that, while likely accurate at the time of publication, today are almost exactly OPPOSITE of our current laws and regulations. Many of the other chapters contain dated information and recommendations that, at best, mislead the reader. However, some of the general information is still relevant. In summary, you would be better off finding a more current publication dealing with real estate.

Book Description
A prolific American master whose work is rooted in the tonal tradition of nineteenth-century Romanticism, Robert Ward has had a long, varied, and successful musical career. Ward is noted for his keyboard and chamber music, songs and choral works, orchestral compositions, and operas, especially his musical rendering of The Crucible, which has become an established feature of the contemporary operatic repertoire. In this latest volume in the Bio-Bibliographies in Music series, Kenneth Kreitner presents a comprehensive bibliographic guide that includes the composer's complete works, recordings of his music, and relevant critical literature. In the introductory biographical section, Kreitner discusses Ward's life and career and examines the influence that have shaped his musical style. The complete list of works is arranged chronologically and supplies basic bibliographic data such as information on premieres and other selected performances. A discography offers data on commercially-produced recordings and an annotated bibliography lists writings by and about Ward and his music. The different sections are fully cross-referenced, and several indexes are provided. An important tool for scholars engaged in research on contemporary classical music, this volume will also be of interest to reference librarians and performing organizations.

Incredible nonfiction.......2000-04-17
As readable as a novel, but based on painstaking research, Ross's account of the Jews who lived out the Holocaust in Shanghai focuses on four individual and their families. There is another book that deals mostly with the religious Jews in Shanghai (which Ross, disappointingly, ignores except for one or two disparaging remarks), but this book presents an excellent overall picture by following the lives of specific people. Highly recommended.
