Book Description
This witty guide advises readers to stop playing the stock market or listening to television gurus and instead put their money into dividend-paying, moderate-growth companies that offer consistent returns and minimum risk. Citing statistics that show companies initiating and raising dividends at the fastest rate in 30 years, this analysis declares once-stodgy dividends to be "the next new thing" and provides simple rules for choosing the best stocks, using traditional evaluation tools, reinvesting dividends, comparing stocks and bonds, and building a portfolio. Technical aspects of the stock market are explained in the final pages that include two new chapters and revised statistics as well as academic studies, historic back-tests, examples of real-time performance, and a list of resources for further research.
Customer Reviews:
Interesting Advocate of 100% Stock Asset Allocation .......2007-07-08
I am a great fan of passive index funds. I also hate the idea of owning bonds and have toyed with the idea of replacing bonds in my asset allocation with high dividend stocks from high quality companies. Historically, high dividend stocks from high quality companies have declined less than the S&P 500 in Bear Markets. The current 15% tax rate on dividends is also more favorable to holding high dividend paying stocks in taxable accounts.
Miller hates bonds as much as I do......and advocates a 100% stock portfolio several times in the book.
Miller contends that an investor can construct a 100% stock portfolio that has lower risk and a higher return than a conventional 60:40 stock and bond portfolio.
Miller repeats the age old saying that "Dividends Don't Lie".......and we recently learned about how many managements can lie ala Enron and WorldCom. Miller calls the period 1990-2003 the Dividend Dark Ages where companies reduced the amounts of dividends paid and focused on increase stock prices.......including creative accounting....so executives stock options would be worth more to them.
Miller gives specific guidelines on how to select high quality companies with great prospects for long term increases in dividend growth.
Although Miller is more an active versus a passive investor, his technicques are likely to yield returns close to index fund returns.
Over-all an interesting read and his suggestion to replace a 60:40 conventional stock and bond portfolio with 100% dividend paying stocks is great food for thought.
I would suggest companion books to supplement this book including:
The Richest Man in Babylon
Bogle on Mutual Funds: New Perspectives for the Intelligent Investor
The Millionaire Next Door
The Four Pillars of Investing: Lessons for Building a Winning Portfolio
A Random Walk Down Wall Street: The Time-Tested Strategy for Successful Investing, Ninth Edition

The Coffeehouse Investor: How to Build Wealth, Ignore Wall Street, and Get On With Your Life
The Bogleheads' Guide to Investing
Wealth: Grow It, Protect It, Spend It, and Share It
All About Asset Allocation.
Among the Best Investing Books Available.......2006-07-25
I've read dozens of investing "classics" and this one ranks high among them. It's engangingly written without being pushy or arrogant. The advice it contains is convincing, wise, and timeless.
good investment book .......2006-07-04
I read geraldine weiss investment books, and made up my mind to keep studying dividend investing; actually it is one of the best strategies to employ in hard markets like the one we are experiencing; the volatiliy is relatively low compared to other different strategies, and long term results could be substantial.
Good and well researched book
simply a SMART strategy.......1999-08-29
this is a great book. O'Higgin's book on buying the Dogs of the Dow was a good book, and it made sense: buy quality when it is cheap. Well, Miller's book makes sense, too. In fact, it makes so much sense, that you wonder "why, of course, that's the way to make money". This book reminds you how important dividends are (some 70% of stocks' returns over the past 50 years), and how significant compounding can be. ("yeah, yeah, yeah" you say, but how about 20+% annual return per year on an investment in a solid, low risk company? Miller tells you how.) Though this is not the kind of book that appeals to day-traders, or "hot stock" investors, it is the kind of book that should appeal to smart investors.
One of the best investment books so far!.......1999-07-19
"Single Best Investment" is an intelligent, easy to understand and yet a rather entertaining book that should be of equal interest to a wide spectrum of investors, from beginners to professionals. Based on a common sense approach of time value and compounding, it guides investors toward creating portfolios that will result in consistent returns without playing the market. "Single Best Investment" is one of the few proven and effective strategies that make sense to investors around the world and will never go out of style.
Book Description
For many years, scholars aligned with mainstream research paradigms that make up organizational behavior (OB) have been leaning toward the more positive depiction of organizational reality. To better understand people's behavior in the workplace, they must also explore misbehavior. Organizational Misbehavior (OMB) is a term that was coined by Yaov Vardi about 10 years ago when he found out there were no models for how to predict "misconduct" at work. Thus, the purpose of this book is to delineate a new agenda for organizational behavior theory and research.
Devoted to the study and management of misbehavior in work organizations, this volume is divided into three parts. Part I discusses the prevalence of these phenomena. It searches for typologies and definitions for misbehavior in the management literature using a historical perspective and proposes a general framework of OMB. Part II explores some important manifestations and antecedents of OMB at different levels of analysis--the person, the job, and the organization. Finally, Part III presents practical and methodological implications for managers and researchers. The authors offer a comprehensive and systematically developed framework for the development and management of misbehavior in organizations.
The book is intended for students, scholars, and practitioners who manage OB.
Customer Reviews:

Implementing Management Innovations: Lessons Learned from Activity
Based Costing in the U.S. Automobile Industry is the result of a long-term study of the implementation of activity based costing (ABC) inside two of America's largest automobile companies. The research advances our theoretical and practical understanding of the implementation of management innovations by tracing the evolution of ABC from the corporate level down to its eventual rollout at the plants. Another distinguishing feature of the study is the blend of field research methods and hypothesis testing to determine the factors that led to implementation success for managers and ABC development teams. Many of the findings of the study have implications for the implementation of other types of management innovations.

Johnson Family Singers.......2007-03-26
I'm enjoying reading this especially since I'm aquainted with the author of the book. This is a true story of real people.
Nostalgia and Americana at its best.......2003-02-20
Growing up in the golden age of radio, long before TV,CD's or even LP records, one remembers the sheer joy of that medium as a connection to a world of performing artists, singers and musicians. Gospel music in the South was exemplified by a small number of groups, often comprised of members of a family. In Charlotte, NC, the Johnson Family Singers was a byword on WBT radio for many years beginning in the early 40's. Ma and Pa were accompanied by Betty, the twin boys, and Kenneth, who authored this book. There music was mostly gospel until they stretched their wings into some more secular music at the encouragement of their talented pianist-accompanyist, Larry Walker. There is a charming story with many interesting anecdotes behind the scenes of this well scrubbed and wholesome family, who worked hard to make a living with their music. There were struggles and challenges abounding in this pursuit, which like so many other public exposures of the day, including professional sports, big bands, and singers of national prominence, were a result of compensation that in no way compares to that of today's entertainers and athletes. Kenneth writes of these challenges in a candid and straightforward manner that captures the interest of anyone who wants to remember or discover what life in those times held for struggling musicians. There were log cabins, primitive but wholesome facilities, and a rural life that entailed gardening duties and other activities to supplement and make possible the musical careers. Kenneth explains well how the busy life with gospel music, always looking for new songs to introduce, did not always leave enough time for the family's own spiritual sustenance. In later years, achieving national notoriety, and at the same time with the children following their own instincts to spread out to other locations and pursuits, the family faced the forces that tend to spread families apart. The Johnson family survived these times with stronger faith in God and a unifying force that kept the family together in spirit as Betty, Ken, and the twins went their own ways. Ken became a minister and Betty achieved fame with her music, placing several records on the charts and becoming a regular on morning and tonight show ventures such as Don McNeil and Jack Paar. Ken draws attention and interest to the individual roles of the family members as they found a cohesion and team approach to the music business. They were favorites of mine and thousands in the South during two decades. Betty now records with her two grown daughters in a rennaisance of the Johnson family's tradition, applied to more contemporary music. Once reading this book, a person, whether familiar or not with their music, will surely want to hear the accompanying CD and pursue the many others available today with samples of the old and the new songs...music of three generations that represent the very best of American talent.

Customer Reviews:
Another holocaust novel?.......2000-04-26
Mr. Bloch has been able to capture in this novel a more personal side to this tragic period in history. It was very easy to become involved in the book. He has been able to portray pivotal incidents throughout his ordeal in a very clear manner which helps give a better perspective, perhaps, than other 'historical' novels on the same subject. Just imagine having to work in the same hospital as Dr. Mengela while he was conducting his medical 'studies'; or watch as trainloads carrying thousands of ordinary people are ushered into the camps, minutes away from separation, torture, and death. Mr. Bloch displays real courage and amazing good fortune throughout this story and is able to relate the real tragedy of this dark period of history in a very personal way.
Book Description
1901. "The first thing a man should learn to do," says Andrew Carnegie, " is to save his money. By saving his money he promotes thrift, the most valued of all habits. Thrift is the great fortune-maker. It draws the line between the savage and the civilized man. Thrift not only develops the fortune, but it develops also the man's character." Mr. Marden takes the reader through anecdotes and real-life experiences of those who have used economy to become successful to help teach the same to all those who desire success.

Realistic Life: Fears, Flaws, Humor & Joy during WWII.......2004-02-21
Looking Back: A Tail Gunner's View of WWII
Is an honest, engaging recount of one's life during WWII.
This book isn't a tale of international intrigue; nor is it a compilation of military reports specifying tactics and a chain-of-command. It is, merely, an honest account of a man's lifetime during a young man's few years. Dale acknowledges; his inclination to avoid trudging through Europe, his desire to avoid emotional confrontation with his parents as he decides to actively serve in the Armed Forces, the antics of young servicemen, attitude and unacknowledged actions towards questionable moral behavior, and one's puzzlement when attempting to recall details of his airplane falling through the sky and sinking into the ocean.
A reader might expect any story of WWII to be laden with sadness; however, Dale's youthful perspective manages to recall the moments of humor that typically enable one to endure and to eventually heal. The comradeship and respect amongst the servicemen he encountered creates a heartfelt touch of intimacy to his story. In doing so, Dale brings the reader to an enlightened view of life during WWII. The reader inevitably must offer grateful thanks to all Veterans of Service.
Thank You,
Lori Jean

Book Description
This is the sometimes humorous, sometimes tragic story of the author's service in the USAAF from 1942 to 1943. Dale R. VanBlair was tail gunner with a B-24 crew in the 448th Bomb Group, with whom he flew missions over Germany from December 1943 to April 1944. The climax of the book is his account of the crew's last mission when they led a formation to Berlin. Severely damaged by flak and fighters, they were forced to ditch in the North Sea with the loss of five men. A gripping narrative of terrifying action in WWII, the book describes in vivid detail the experience of the remote tail gunner's position.
