Brilliant Prognostication.......2006-03-23

This book appears to have been originally published just before the NASDAQ crash in March of 2000. The copy that I purchased from Amazon.com appears to be a private re-publication of really first class quality by Ned Davis Reseach after the event. It was probably used as a presentation to clients and prospective clients to show the quality of his forecasting. Davis hit it right on the money. There is no doubt about that, and this book reflects his reasoning process before the event, unlike so many books written in hindsight.

A Complete Insight Into Being Right or Making Money.......2003-04-16

Words of wisdom and a common sense approach to profiting in the markets is what you'll get from this slice of Ned Davis Research. This is a revision to the 1991 edition that contains updated information and a take on the year 2000 bubble. Seven chapters of insight are packed into this coffee table-style book, with loads of color-coded charts and aphorisms. If you're looking to obtain a grasp of the common traits that have made the monsters of money management successful, this book is worth your while.

Maybe you've seen Ned Davis on CNBC or CNN; he's often quoted in Barron's and The Wall Street Journal; he's been in the business for over thirty years and has a lot to offer. He's also a good study of the old pros, such as George Soros and Peter Lynch. From them he has gathered four traits that are key to maintaining success. They are: Objectivity, Flexibility, Discipline and Risk Management. Hard to argue here.

According to Ned Davis, the business of speculating is largely psychological. Great quotes and facts about crowd psychology are influential for understanding the markets. As he states:

"In case we are being swept up by the crowd or in case our own reality becomes badly distorted, what we need is an unbiased, objective standard that will weigh the evidence and pass judgment devoid of emotionalism."

The overall composition of this book is tuned more for a position trader rather than a pure day trader. You won't find exercises to hone your entry skills, but the wisdom and market insight are like vitamins that will keep you focused and on-target for profits. No matter what your trading goals are, this book will keep you pointed in the right direction.

"Being Right Or Making Money" is like getting a pro level college course on how to stay one step ahead of the stock and bond markets, and is destined to be a desktop companion for any serious investor, especially those whose foray into online trading has left them at a disadvantage after the post bubble and Enron days.

This is a place where many might have started, as it provides an excellent foundation for market analysis and the formation of a life time investing plan. The book's emphasis is not on how to make a fortune day trading, but rather it teaches investors how to make sense out of information that truly forecasts the future of the market.

There are several chapters on how to create asset allocation models in both bonds and stocks. And it is here that investors will find hidden jewels such as how to make sense out of contrarian opinion and how to analyze the stock market's momentum.

The book is written with a general audience in mind, and has great long term indicator charts that clearly illustrate how and when the indicators work, as well as the results of their buy and sell signals. Highly recommended for those who are truly serious about investing, and those who are looking for better forecasting tools...

Excellent book on quantitative analysis of stocks/markets.......2001-06-17

This is easily one of the best books I've ever read on quantitative techniques for stock market analysis. The first two chapters (by Ned Davis) gives his view on what moves the markets. It's a treasure chest of ideas ... some old, but also a few new ones (at least to me).

The rest of the chapters are written by staff members of NDR. The book contains several timing models with historical performance. While some of the models rely on data not easily obtained, the breadth of ideas is impressive.

Highly recommended.

The book was brief, to the point and helpful in explaining some of the contemporary ethical questions involved in writing a research article or paper, especially when co-authors are involved. It could be used as a textbook for a class because each section included ethical questions for debate.

This well-written primer grounds both neophyte and experienced scientist in the culture of Western science as it is today. It explores such topics as values in science, conflicts of interest, assigning of credit, and authorship conventions, meanwhile managing to shed useful light on a whole range of other topics. I would recommend this book to any scientist, science student, or person interested in pursuing the sciences. "On Being a Scientist" fosters interest in the sciences and builds a foundation upon which to become a more informed, responsible, and productive researcher. Additionally, this text could benefit educators, policy-makers, and nonscientists by giving them a window into the pressures and experiences associated with life in the scientific realm.

Without being discouraging or unrealistically sanguine, this concise document lays out the conventions, factors, and shifts of perspective that scientists today need to know about both regarding behavioral expectations within the disciplines and the roles of science and scientist in the public domain. Glenn McGee is a philosopher at the Center for Bioethics in Philadelphia, but The Perfect Baby is no dry or abstract tome. "Philosophical systems must be tested where the rubber meets the road," says McGee, and he discusses ethical issues in human reproduction with a focus on real people and real choices. McGee's approach is based on the pragmatism of American philosophers William James and John Dewey, brought up to date by looking at "the ideas that are in play in our actual discussions of parenthood and babies, about ideas like identity, perfection, enhancement, and illness." McGee concludes that "we must resist the tendency to explain away the 'felt' aspects of the problem": feelings have ethical reality.

This book was a great way to get to know the people who work on genetics and new reproductive technologies. I read the book for my genetics class but I loved it anyway! It tells the history and the science and ethics, but I liked that it is so well written and so human.

A great book all the way around........1997-11-21

This book changed our minds about using BRCA-1 genetic testing. It is the best $11 we spent--about the same amount as a single prenatal vitamin! The history part is really interesting. We shared this book with our friends and it is being discussed at our church after the minister saw it discussed on C-SPAN. There really isn't much bad to say.

Whew! I needed this book!.......2007-02-28

Having served on several community and non-profit boards, I thought everyone always worked in harmony on these boards. But, I recently found out that's just not the case. After a couple of our board members did not see a vote go their way, they then went out of their way to "stir the pot" and not support the board decision. I needed help ... and found it in "The Perfect Board". The three pages dealing with respect and unity were woth the price of the book alone! This book should be required reading for any board member or potential board member. This primer is loaded with great wisdom!

"The Perfect Board," is a book written for those who want to become an effective member of any Board of Directors. In essence it is a self-help book chock full of essential guidelines to be an effective leader.
However, this work is written in a cleaver way, as it is told in story form when a young woman named Rebecca is about to be promoted and is unsure how to proceed. In her quest to do the best job she can, she seeks out help and is lead to a man, EJ Cummings, who shares with her a book which he is about to release. In this book he shares the principals that he has learned through years of dealing with this facet of business. This information gives Rebecca the knowledge and confidence she needs to perform the task before her.
In giving this work a storyline with characters that are about to embark on this journey, author Calvin Clemons puts this self-help book many notches about any other. The personal touch it brings allows the reader to absorb more of the information in the work, allowing a relaxed read instead of feeling you must obtain every morsel, great move on author Calvin Clemons part.
I believe this book will help many and is definitely packed full of some great principals that definitely should be followed.

Ten years ago I moved from a senior management position to the Executive Directors office. If only I had had the benefit of the wisdon contained in Perfect Nonprofit Boards; Myths, Paradoxes and Paradigms. This 138 page book is packed with useful information. It is a "Primer" for governance and management of the Nonprofit Organization. The first five chapters lay the foundation for a thorough understanding of Nonprofit Organizations. This section of the book takes the reader from the forming of an organization and the development of the mission, through the tax and reporting responsibilities to the motivation to become a volunteer board member and the essential qualities of an effective Executive Director. Once the reader has digested all of this material, Dr. Block focuses on the Role of the Board and the Role of the Executive Director. He uses established myths about volunteer Boards to make clear that although this is a partnership, the Director provides critical leadership in determining what the organization needs from the Board, and in turn, what the Board members may expect from the Executive Director. The Director manages the organization and the Board supports and assists through their governance efforts. If the Board and the Executive Director have clearly defined roles and expectations, they can make a very powerful and effective Team.

I am sending copies of Perfect Nonprofit Management to several of my friends--both Board members and Directors of Nonprofit Organizations. This book is "must" reading for anyone interested in nonprofit management.

Correctly speaking, this is the minutes od conversation between two great conductors, Abendroth and Furtwaengler in 1937.

This book is consisted of chapters of conversation and 1 chapter of Furtwaengler's own writing in 1945.

The general and special matters about music have been dealt with.

But, I'm afraid that the people who are not interested in Furtwaengler will not like this book.

I think this book is useful primarily for classical CD collectors and Furtwangler's fans. It consists of a biography, recordings reviews and a discography. The biography describes Furtwangler's career using historical context. Recordings reviews are grouped by music eras and composers. Reviews cover all available recordings. You can read about performances of every opus, Furtwangler's thoughts from his books and letters concerning music of Bach, Mozart, Beethoven, Brahms, Wagner and others. It is unique and often previously not published information. And at last you can read a comprehensive review of every recording. I found the reviews useful as it helps to decide whether to buy the recording or not. In Appendix you can find the discography by John Hunt. It covers all available CDs till 1992. LPs are mentioned only if there are no CDs for the item.

Good, but lots of flaws in the writing.......2000-08-19

Wilhelm Furtwangler is mostly served well in this biography by Sam Shirakawa, but the author has real problems with his prose. It's good that he wants to make his book as accessable to the general public as possible, but too often it leads him to sentences which are unintentionally deprecating and, well, trite. An example: "The unimpugned lootings of Jewish-owned property and businesses had already begun, and the move to examine everybody's family tree for signs of Jewish blood became the deadly Trivial Pursuit of the time." I don't think it's being oversensitive to be offended by having Hitler's despicable racial policies compared to a popular board game from the 1980s, but quite apart from that, sentences like this one put things in simplistic ways more appropriate for a high school term paper than for a scholarly work.

Nonetheless, Shirakawa has done a scrupulous job of examining Furtwangler's life and career. The evidence he puts forward that Furtwangler was not a Nazi is well-documented and compelling, even if there are remaining doubts (which there probably always will be). He also does a very credible job at detailing the conductor's work habits, his thoughts on his craft, his dalliances (which were considerable), his relations with other composers, conducters and musicians, and his frequent battles of wills with the leaders of the Third Reich. You may still feel no pity for Furtwangler's dilemmas at the end of the book, but it's not because the author hasn't been thorough in examining his subject's life. I hope Shirakawa might consider a revision this book at some later date; there's too much that's good about this book to let it be undermined by what's bad.

entertaining, informative and well balanced.......1999-05-31

This is an in-depth analysis of a musical genius, with all the warts showing. It is highly entertaining, informative and objective, with no ax to grind. Rather, an attempt to set a warped record straight as to F's alleged Nazi collaboration - quite the opposite being true.

Disappointing.......1999-04-12

For openers, who is the author. I've never heard of Sam H. Shirakawa and I would like to know what are his credentials for commenting on the music made by Furtwangler and his life. Any temptation to give the author the benefit of any doubt, given the high reputation of publisher Oxford University Press, is eradicated by the howler of an error on page 177. In an aside, Shirakawa tells us that Theodore Roosevelt was Franklin Roosevelt's grandfather. I would have thought every schoolchild knows that Teddy was the fifth (!!!) cousin of FDR. (How could the prestigious publisher let this error slip by??) After reading that, it is very difficult to accept at face value what Shirakawa asks us to accept regarding his scholarship and expertise. More generally, and a further criticism of the publisher, the book is too long and mmmuch too repetitive. All in all, a disappointing read about a genius music maker.

Insight without the Hoopla.......2006-06-13

Full disclaimer ... I reviewed this book a decade ago. Back then I thought Furtwangler had written a smart, unpretentious book. I still think that. If you're looking for insight without the same-old-same-old on this tired subject, check out Acts of Discovery. Also check out the collection of essays edited by Kris Fresonke and Mark Spence. Very worthwhile.

This book very well depicts the ways in which Lewis and Clark explored the West. I would reccomend it to anyone who needs straightforward information for a report.

A great idea for a book that went overboard.......2007-10-21

Don't get me wrong. I enjoyed this book. But there were too many excessive rants about Annie, the almost-bride, and it dragged for over 80 pages in the beginning. I couldn't wait for the brothers to start their trip to Costa Rica. The first half of the book read as a revenge book for Annie with him showing off "Hey look Annie, where I am now! I'm in Prague with a woman who won't leave my aparment!"

The boys had so much fun together that they decided to give it another go around the world. That was also a great idea, but here is where the writing became shallow: it was no longer a travelogue, but a myriad of happenings to Franz. Everything was about Franz--the women, the drink, the humor. There was little focus on the countries they traveled through. The stories reminded me of Ayun Halliday's mediocre travel book "No Touch Monkey."

The best part was the 32 pages devoted to Africa in the end. Here's where Franz started getting philosophical (maybe because he knew his time on the road was coming to an end?) and became reflective. Yes, he said, there is more poverty on this earth than there are riches. So why didn't he cover all that earlier in the book?

Don't get me wrong, this is a great Guy Book. And according to the corresponding website, this idea of stranded grooms and brides is catching on. Unfortunately, the topic quickly went old with me. I understand there will be a movie on this book. Who will play Franz? I want to see George Clooney as the lead.

I give this book three instead of four stars because I don't think the current rating of 4.5 stars correctly rates this book. My three stars is a protest vote. At best, this book is worthy of four stars.

A great read!.......2007-09-17

I really enjoyed ths book. After stumbling across it in a book store, it was a pleasant surprise. I could empathize a lot with both characters. The book has me dreaming about my own trip around the world. Guess that's the beauty of books, if you can't go there. It's nice to read about someone else's adventures. Now bring on the movie and the next book!

A Must Read for all Brothers.......2007-08-28

If you have a brother, if you like to travel, or if you just enjoy good writing you must read Honeymoon with My Brother. The journey of Franz and Kurt is a comedy based off of a tragedy - getting dumped at the altar. The story is a serious story with life lessons and experiences that will change one forever with comedy entwined throughout. Essentially, this is a tragic comedy that is seriously funny. A must read. You won't regret it!

Surprisingly insightful and entertaining...it inspires Wonderlust!.......2007-08-28

Two rich pretty boys from the West Coast whining over a breakup and traveling the world...why would I even bother to read this? Curiosity? Sheer novelty? I love reading memoirs and honestly had that sterotype in mind when I picked up this book. Boy--was I wrong. Honeymoon With My Brother was an insightful and entertaining memoir. Franz Wisner handles his breakup with sensitivity and humility, and has the courage to follow through on the "take this job and shove it" mindset we all experience at one time or another. His journey around the world was captivating, plus his relationship with his brother, friends and strangers along the way, and the memorable LeRue, make this a worthwhile read.

Another travelogue.......2007-08-09

The book itself is your typical travelogue told by Wisner who has "found" himself while touring around the country for years. If you are looking for a light hearted easy read than this book is for you. It tries to offer his point of view on what he found and his interpretation of his surroundings.
