Book Description

International marketing consultant Russell Miller takes a close, pragmatic look at the movement to privatization that is sweeping the important markets of Western and Central Europe, Latin America, and Asia, and lays out the business opportunities and challenges that U.S. corporations and others worldwide will find there. He identifies the market dynamics created by newly privatized companies, the problems of reaching them, and the approach strategies that U.S. and other companies would find most productive, such as the creation of strategic alliances, enterprise restructurings, expanded technical relationships, and export market development. He also identifies the methods, objectives, and locations of leading privatization programs. The result is a rich, useful study of the vast new markets now opening up worldwide, and insights into how corporations here and abroad can access them and benefit from them. Essential reading for top-level executives in corporations with aspirations abroad, and for their marketing, strategic planning, and international business development staffs. During the past decade, thousands of former state-controlled companies in more than 100 different countries have entered the private sector. These firms range in size and commercial significance from small family-owned kiosks in Russia to some of the largest, most influential corporations in Western and Central Europe, Latin America, and Asia. Miller provides a comprehensive, business-oriented perspective on the origin and geographic expansion of the privatization movement, and describes the methods that governments use and the objectives they hope to achieve in the divestment of state assets. He identifies the formative influences on these new companies, as well as the operating needs created by the privatization process. Privatization-intensive markets are examined in relation to their importance, type of companies involved, and the challenges they present. Miller's book also discusses alternate methods of market expansion, such as reaching newly privatized firms through a strategic marketing program. His book will be essential reading for academicians and graduate students in international business and world trade, as well as their practitioner counterparts in corporations and multilateral development agencies.

5 out of 5 stars Miller knows his stuff.......2000-10-09

A hot topic covered by someone who really knows the business. Tells the whole story, including the challenges. The complex topic of privitization is detailed and thought provoking. Takes the topic of international business to new depths.

5 out of 5 stars Interesting and informative look at privatized companies.......2000-10-07

I enjoyed Miller's book because it examines privatization from a business perspective rather than the usual view of government agencies and multilateral organizations. He clearly describes the relative risks and rewards of dealing with former government owned firms and the strategies that produce the best results.

2 out of 5 stars Not impressed.......2007-05-23

I was not very impressed with this book. My background is that I am familiar with stock market basics but needed a better understanding of how economic indicators that are often reported in the Wall Street Journal play into the stock market. For instance, people seem to write a lot about the jobs report and I never understood all of the ramifications of this indicator. How the Economy Works doesn't say anything about the jobs report.

The descriptions of various aspects of the economy weren't documented as thoroughly as I would have liked either. As a specific example of this, I was familiar with the basic idea of GDP but didn't understand all of the details. How the Economy Works broke down the components that make up the GDP but did not explain why certain components were necessary, such as "changes in business inventory." In other words, what was the rationale for including changes in business inventory as a component of the GDP? You would never find out by reading this book. You would only know it's in there. I didn't find my economic confusion cleared up very much with this book.

I later purchased The Secrets of Economic Indicators (ISBN: 0-13-145501-X) from Amazon and found this book much more clear, factual, and in depth. In chapter 3 they covered the jobs report as "the most eagerly awaited news on the economy". The GDP description was very clear in comparison to How the Economy Works, and much more thorough.

My recommendation would be to go with another book if you are interested in really understanding the various aspects of the economy. However, How the Economy Works might be useful for people who feel overwhelmed and just need a good overview of the different aspects of the economy.

5 out of 5 stars How the Economy Works: An Investor's Guide to Tracking the Economy.......2007-01-30

This is an excellent book for those beginning a study of real world economics. There are plenty of charts and clear explanations of how the Economy's pieces fit together. I have used it in several courses and can report that my students have found it very helpful.

4 out of 5 stars Problem is the publishing date: 1999.......2003-09-12

Most of the data in this book ends no later than 1998, so shows everything trending merrily upward. Not the author's fault, of course, and you could update it yourself if you've got lots of free time, a highbandwidth Internet connection, access to an excellent library and money for some subscriptions. Otherwise, an update to show the bubble and bust would be most helpful.

But a good book to read if looking for a start at understanding the sources of and connections between the various economic indices and data that are so glibly thrown about in both the popular and financial media.

4 out of 5 stars The High School Opinion.......2003-03-14

The average person does not know much about the U.S. economy, even though they are connected to it everyday. Mr. Mennis' book, How the Economy Works, takes this complex subject down to the average readers skill, and takes them step by step through each aspect of it. I was galvanised by the way Mennis used graphs and charts to back up his text. It was very refreshing to see this, because in school, they explain, but never show you how it works in life. If you want to major in business this would be a great book for you. Mr. Mennis tells about starting up a new business and how to work the stock market, so it doesn't work you. Mennis believes that the five best ideas for understanding investments are listing specific goals, how to meet these goals, set an absolute rate of return so you can see it your goal is realistic, a time in which to measure your results and to determine the risks involved before getting into a situation you can't get out of. If you still want more info buy the book, it's a great way to learn about the U.S. Economy.

1 out of 5 stars economics is not the same as investing.......2002-09-10

A big problem with this book is the title. The book should have been titled "An Introduction to Economic Data that Impact Investments".

The unstated premise of this book is that you must understand and follow scores of economic indexes to make profitable investments. If you agree with that premise, this book is for you.

I tend to think that making money on the stock/bond markets requires more than just understanding economics. Whatever that is, you will not find it in this book.

    Book Description

The public environment in which companies operate has changed significantly since the 1970s. Communities, in response to elected officials and community groups, are demanding that companies observe new norms of behavior. They expect companies to respect the environment, respond to the concerns of the community residents, and contribute to the support of community institutions. As Burke illustrates, a company's community reputation also affects the behavior of consumers and employees. Consumers prefer to buy products from companies that are involved in the community. Employees are attracted to companies that have a good community reputation. Just as successful companies need to be a supplier of choice, an employer of choice, and an investor of choice, they now have to become a neighbor of choice. They have to behave in ways that build a legacy of trust in order to be positioned positively in the community. As Burke shows, to be a neighbor of choice a company has to pursue three strategies: build sustainable and ongoing relationships with key community individuals, groups, and organizations; institute procedures that anticipate and respond to community expectations, concerns, needs, and issues; and focus the company's community programs on ways that promote and strengthen the community's quality of life and which also support the business goals of the company. The strategies developed by Burke will be of great use to community and public affairs managers and general managers of corporations as well as CEOs and other executive officers. Students in courses on corporate strategy and general management will find the book of value, as will students in courses on non-profit management.

This is an excellent book that will help companies focus there business on strong relationship with the community they live in. The one weakness I see is an over emphasis on philanthropy. I am not so sure that throwing money at the community will really buy a good relationship. This book should be read by anyone who is involved in the management of a manufacturing facility.

First of all, check out one of THE BEST speaker's the world has: www.kevinoc.com. He was the professor who introduced this book to me. The insights and examples Fujishin provides are worthwhile and actually produce results. This is not a direct 'how-to' book; rather, it allows you to foresee problems and act in order to prevent them. It opens your mind and makes you think 'why' then 'how,' which is much more effective.

                  Book Description

In recent years there has been a developing trend toward involving family in the processes of child protection decision making. In 1989, New Zealand introduced new children and young persons legislation that formalized this trend in the child care and protection area. While Family Group Conferences have been developed in New Zealand, the principles of family decision making in child protection work are of wide current interest and are increasingly utilized in practice developments internationally. The purpose of this book is to provide the first theoretical and practice analysis of using family group conference concepts within the child care and protection area. A distinguishing feature of the book is that it develops a model of family decision making, Effective Participatory Practice (EPP), that critically considers the family group conference process and the linking of models of empowerment, family participation, and partnerships in child protection.

3 out of 5 stars Needs Some Proofreading.......2007-02-06

This book is a more tedious read than it needs to be because of a plethora of grammatical errors. The ill-placed comma on page 152, for example ("Finally, the communication structure or network, developed in the group impacts information flows among group members."), is the kind of thing that makes you stop and re-read the sentence a few times to make sure you extracted the correct meaning. There seem to be a lot of similar mistakes. I was required to buy this text for a course I was required to take. Since I wasn't looking forward to the course, my attention span and patience was short enough to begin with; this book is not helping.

                            Book Description

Elgar deliberately made a mystery of his private life, so that only his most perceptive friends ever really knew Elgar the Man.

Born in 1857, the son of a piano-tuner and a farmer's daughter, Elgar spent his first forty years showing little sign that life had anything more to offer than his job as bandmaster in the Worcester Lunatic Asylum and a niche in the provincial music circuit. Then, in 1899, the success of his Enigma Variations made him a national celebrity. He crammed his whole life's work into the next twenty years, ending in 1919 with his Cello Concerto. He had fifteen years left to live, years spent in bitter disillusionment in which he felt his life had been a failure.

In this penetrating and moving biography Michael De-la-Noy reveals for the first time the depth and complexity of a man whom, he believes, struggled against exceptional emotional difficulties to produce some of the finest music ever written.

                                Book Description

Biancastella is the fascinating and inspiring account of one man's uncommon journey through the horrors of the Holocaust. At the age of fourteen, Harry Burger, an Austrian Jew from a well-to-do family, found the circumstances of his life completely altered by the Nazi rise to power. In 1938, just a year after Burger's bar mitzvah, the Nazis overtook Austria and began to implement anti-Jewish policies. His father lost his business and was eventually imprisoned and sent to Auschwitz. The rest of his family scattered. Burger and his mother went into hiding in France, and learned how to survive under occupying Italian and German forces.

Five years into the war, Burgan crossed the Alps into Italy and joined the Partisans, a group of Italian Resistance fighters who battled the Nazis from the mountains in northwest Italy. Taking the name Biancastella, which means "white star" in Italian, Burger, along with other Resistance members, was able to fight back, sabotaging German operations, mounting defensive attacks, and capturing and punishing many of the Nazis who would have had him dead. Despite an upbringing that ill-prepared him for life on the run, Burger successfully avoided Nazi capture through seven brutal and uncertain years of war. His is a thrilling tale of courage and survival.

5 out of 5 stars An amazing tale of courage and strong will........1999-02-02

My family came to the U.S. from Austria in 1907. If we had stayed, the majority of us would have been killed. This book is the personal account of a young man from a well to do Jewish family in Vienna. When the Nazis came to Austria his family fled, and when he could no longer flee, he decided to join a partisan group to combat the Nazis in Northern Italy. This book is honest and to the point. As a person who spent six years in the Marines and has a degree in History, I found Burger's accounts to be very real. His first-hand experience with resisting the Nazis is something everyone should read so it never happens again. If the world had reacted to Hitler the way Burger did as a young man, WWII probably would have been avoided. This book should be included as part of the curriculum of every WWII History course.

5 out of 5 stars Suprisingly honest perspective on human nature, good & evil.......1997-09-27

What struck me with this book was its honesty, the warts-and-all view of a boy's attempt at dealing with a nightmare by design; his incredible survival instincts and the places they took him. This book stands as testimony to the reality that Jews did, in fact, stand up in the face of Adolf Hilter through whatever limited or even extraordinary means opportunty presented. You can't write fiction like this first-hand account, though people like Herman Wouk have tried with great market success. The author, for example, chances upon people like Louis Armstrong giving us milestones as a frame of reference, but with a sincerity the best historical fiction writer sorely lacks.
