5 out of 5 stars Money Strategies of the Rich & Famous.......2003-11-16

This book covers investment techniques used by the Rich & Famous. "The Rich & Famous Money Book" is inspiring, motivating and educational.

Good book for anyone who wants to maximize their investment returns.

5 out of 5 stars Well researched and motivating too.......2003-10-06

Reading how the celebs build their wealth is exciting and motivating. Sort of like a "Think and Grow Rich" for personal finance, Chatsky actually interviewed her subjects.

Dennis Rodman was inspiring - what a great comeback story.

If your goal is to build and hang on to wealth, this bookis a must read.

5 out of 5 stars Learning how celebs invest is fun ... and motivational!.......1998-12-10

Personal finance expert Jean Chatzky managed to cajole several money-savvy celebrities into revealing their investment strategies. Finding out how people as diverse as Matt Lauer, Charles Schwab, and Ivana Trump build their nest eggs is illuminating -- and fun. And their experiences make for an easy-reading guide to investing. Jean's section on "rebounders" like Dennis Rodman, who lost a bundle and came back far wiser for it, will be valuable for anyone trying to climb out of debt.

5 out of 5 stars An intriguing look at the finances of those who intrigue us!.......1997-10-25

Jean Sherman Chatzky has done an awesome job of combining the glamor of high finance with valuable lessons that hit down home. This book interviews about two dozen of the Rich and Famous -- athletes like Dennis Rodman and Mike Ditka, celebrities like Matt Lauer and Ivana Trump and Helen Gurley Brown, Wall Street wizzes like Charles Schwab and Bear Stearns' Ace Greenberg -- and provides an in-depth look at their investments and financial strategies. The book seems to uncover humorous stories from most, and interesting anecdotes from all. The book has a wonderful collection of stars from all arenas; it's the first book I've seen with so much dirt on celebrity money.

Each chapter provides valuable advice that you can apply to your own finances, even if your numbers pale by comparison. I was spellbound by this book, which is basically a fun-to-read how-to guide.

A unique book covering a universal favorite: fame and fortune.

I had a friend who was going thru some very difficult times at work with a few co-workers. I saw the book and purchased it for myself but once I read it I knew that my friend could benefit from reading it so I gave it to her because her situation was more complex than mine. She thanked me for the book because she knew that it would help her to better understand how to survive in a hostile work environment.

5 out of 5 stars Great Book on Goal Setting.......2000-03-24

This book provided me with a great blueprint for understanding what it takes to set and achieve any goal I set. On the following lines I have written out one of the paragraphs that Gary Ryan Blair includes in the very first commandment that made all the sense in the world to me. I hope you enjoy it.

"You are born with great capabilities, but you will not achieve your potential until you call upon yourself to fulfill it. You will rise to the occasion when it presents itself. Yet, to assure self-fulfillment, you must provide occasions to rise to. Clearly defined goals allow you to travel toward another horizon that represents the end of one experience and the transition to a new and better existence. The objective is to choose the right goals, and then to create the necessary causes-the effects will follow!

5 out of 5 stars Finally a book that cuts through the BS and tells it like is.......2002-08-25

In the competitive world of today's business world where bottom line and results are often the sole focus of business management, the real foundation of the company - its people and culture - are too often overlooked. Author Fromm, using vivid examples from his own business, and often some from his client's, illustrates how shifting the focus internally by treating employees like royalty and facilitating their efforts instead of creating obstacles, results in richer bottom lines, improved production, and better customer service. Fromm goes on, in an attitude rare among top execs, to state that a prime responsibility for any manager is to "cut through the red tape" that hinders top performance by an employee.

Overall, a very well written book that is remarkably free of techno-talk and useless clutter. Fun to read and gripping in insights, this book should be on the table of every manager today.

      4 out of 5 stars Practical Man-Management Tips....but Universal?.......2001-02-02

The focus of this slim book is people management - employees and customers. It explores various ways of boosting employee morale and thereby productivity. Written in a very engaging and endearing style, the book is full of practical and down to earth tips for managers to make the workplace enjoyable in a service oriented industry. But the problem is that many of these tips are too wacky to be implemented in an environment other than advertising, to which the author belongs. I seriously doubt if such methods will work in large manufacturing set-ups. Nevertheless there is enough wisdom in these pages, which can be adapted by the discerning students and practitioners of man-management.

        5 out of 5 stars Dave Maguire's Review.......1999-04-20

The value of any book that the purports to be a guide to spiritual growth lies as much in its content as it does in the power the background the author brings to the task. Dr. Winer's book shows us the vast panorama of the life of Moses. This is a subject whose appeal is so strong that it merits revisiting.

But what makes the "Ten Commandments for Success" unusually worth reading is the distillation of experience as physician, neurologist, psychiatrist, family head and spiritual leader that Dr. Winer uses to bring a vital contemporary relevance to that well-known story.

Early on Dr. Winer acknowledges that each of the "commandments" he offers the reader (if strictly followed) is as useful in building worldly success as it is in building spiritual maturity. He does not apologize for this. Rather, he sees that obedience, empathy, diligence, fidelity, vision and the others, however they may be applied to a secular experience are essential if one is to grow into the "new creation" modeled on Jesus.

Using Moses as a type of Jesus, Dr. Winer highlights aspects of his life and makes them contemporary with a variety of tools. He, for example, often uses themes and experiences in his own life. He also quotes from such diverse personalities as Lincoln, Franklin, and John Arnott. With these tools he defuses the remoteness of the Moses experience and brings it within the grasp of anyone who seriously ponders spiritual things. And while rewarding for anyone, the book is particularly valuable to those who are called to congregational leadership whether that leadership is in church foundation or for one who is, "... a doorkeeper in the House of the Lord."

Readers will find this young Philadelphia physician's style both clear and attractive. He uses a seemingly endless variety of ways to reduce heretofore ponderous and weighty spiritual matters to refreshingly bite-sized paragraphs. In fact, this may be the only real flaw of the book. Some of the paragraphs are so distilled that it is possible to wonder if the author deliberately tried not to overburden the reader with things considered too obvious. However, all too often the reverse is true and one wishes for an occasional "time out" to reflect on the tightly-packed nature of the text.

On balance it is a book worth not only a second reading but a permanent place on the shelf with Thomas Merton, C. S. Lewis, and Hannah Hurnard. There is a great deal more to this book then its 160 pages would suggest.

David Maguire was the Editor of the Archdiocese of Wilmington, DE newspaper, the Delmarva Dialog and the Managing Editor of the Catholic Review. This review appeared in the Delmarva Dialog.

4 out of 5 stars Common sense, but not very commonly used - it's a good read!.......2002-02-05

The "Ten Commandments of Success" is packed with practical, bite size morsels of the principles of success. Throw in the Ten Commandments, and it sounds like a basic premise for a book on success. However, the distinct power is his ability to communicate the value of building successful leadership that simultaneously builds heart in an organization while leaving a legacy. There's lots of common sense wisdom in the "Ten Commandments of Success," that I'm sure you'll find is prevalent in ALL successful individuals at some degree; especially the value of continuing to learn and treating others well. Though I listened to this one only once, it made such a positive impact on me, that I desire to revisit it a few more times and continue to "be a student."

I always find it "interesting" that certain topics feel the need to have "special instruction" for women.... i.e., "investing for women", "car repair for women", and now "buying a home for women". I guess women are more ignorant when it comes to these topics? They need to be spoken to differently? Buying a home is buying a home, and the issues are no different for men and women. SURE, maybe women are treated differently by brokers, mortgage lenders, etc., but then, if you have been a woman your whole life(!), you have probably already figured out how to handle yourself in the world. I feel books such as this one are just pandering and feeding into the whole idea that women are somehow more "fragile" and need to be spoken to like little children, and in simple, short phrases, so that their "delicate minds" don't overload. I find such a mentality insulting and ignorant, and just a cheap ploy by the authors to get certain susceptible women to buy their product.

1 out of 5 stars Too many inaccuracies!!.......2007-07-22

As a Realtor looking at the information Summers provides, it seems that no one proof read what she wrote. There are typos throughout. And if the rest of it is as accurate as her section on using Realtors, wow! She says on p 113 that if the Jones have a house worth $100,000, they must sell it for $120,000 to pay the 6% commission. $20,000 is not 6% of $120,000! The commission is not $12,000 as she says. That's 10%. Furthermore, the house is worth what it's worth whether a real estate agent is involved or not. No money is added to the price to pay a commission. Yes, you can negotiate a commission, but it's not the buyer's concern since the buyer doesn't pay it. And if the home is for sale by owner, you can bet that the homeowner wants that phantom "commission" money for him or herself, and will not share it with the buyer.
I was thinking about using this book to educate my buyers who are mostly women first-time homebuyers. But the information is so wrong, it would be impossible to correct it. It's obvious that Ms Summers is a writer who gathered a lot of info and put it together, but has little day-to-day experience with the subject. If she thinks the commission is $12,000 and my share is $6000, I would very much like to sell her a house! (It's more like $2000 that goes to the agent.)

I received this book recently and at first site I was disappointed. It looks poorly put together - the front cover looks like it is a photocopy of another and the pages seem to be of low quality.

However, the topics covered in the book seem to be good and I'm looking forward to diving into the book soon.

Some of the information is basic and repetitive from what others are saying but I found it slightly helpful for me. I am looking to purchase my 1st home solo soon....

Buying Solo was the first book I read on home-buying. There were helpful tables given to calculate morgtage payments and affordability factors, but nothing that you couldn't find online or in other books. I'm not sure how many books regarding this topic the other reviewers read, but I was surprised to see so many gave this book five stars.

I read this book from cover to cover and only recall one page that suggested this was a book for women to buy solo. I can sum it up for you in one sentence: Be confident, don't let the realtors break your spirit just because they have more faith in couples with twice the income.

Otherwise it's all the same material as all other home-buying books.

                  Book Description

Antonin Dvorak's New World Symphony is one of the most popular classical works ever. In this spirited account of the story behind the composition, Joseph Horowitz brings to life the diverse musical and cultural influences that inspired the composer, who came from Czechoslovakia to America in 1892. Listening to his assistant, Henry Burleigh, sing slave songs, and visiting Wild West shows and the Kickapoo Medicine Show gave Dvorak the raw material from which to compose his masterpiece that, to both popular audiences and critics, captures the vibrancy and power of American music. Illustrated with archival black-and-white photos, and including index and source notes for further research, this book brings the dramatic and inspiring story of a musical masterpiece to life for young readers.

Joseph Horowitz loves the late 19th and early 20th world of culture. He is simultaneously scholar and activist. His bold, unprecendented project is to take historical moments and richly employ them to introduce the excitement of classical music to young readers. He could have no better scenario than Dvorak in the New World. Here the composer seeks to create an American musical language based on a synthesis of the high symphonic style with elements of Black and Indian music. The characters are vividly drawn and the whole is both beautifully written and wonderfully gauged for young readers. A real treat!

Beckerman takes a real chance with this book. Rather than trying to analyze Dvoř?k's musical legacy by starting with Dvoř?k himself, he starts largely with an analysis of the music and uses this to infer the composer's personality. Unfortunately I think Beckerman has in come places strayed to far from the objective reality of Dvoř?k's life and has been swept away by the passions of music, which magnify the passions of life.
Perhaps most curious about New World of Dvoř?k is that it barely seems to discuss the Master at all, but rather seems to spend most of its time discussing the critics, music researchers, philanthropists, and journalists who were so caught up in what they say as the promise of Dvoř?k. In many ways Beckerman does not describe who the composer really was, or what he really wrote, but what he represented to the Americans who brought him to America and followed his every move as though he was single-handedly spelling out the destiny of American music.
Rather than being a true biography of the composer, I would consider this book more of a very narrow historical and thematic sketch of American musical culture at the time of the Master's visit. Although Beckerman makes some very compelling musical arguments that attempt to find the true inspiration of Dvoř?k's supposedly "American" pieces, his analysis goes so far as to claim there the in fact exists no American nationalist music whatsoever, and this conclusion is just too hard to swallow. It is likewise odd that Beckerman insists that Dvoř?k suffered from debilitating mental anguish and persistent psychological problems. It almost seems that it offends Beckerman's sensibilities that a composer of Dvoř?k's historical significance was essentially "clean."

                    Book Description

Drawing upon a remarkable mix of intensive research and the personal experience of a career devoted to the music about which Dvorak so presciently spoke, Maurice Peress's lively and convincing narrative treats readers to a rare and delightful glimpse behind the scenes of the burgeoning American school of music and beyond. In Dvorak to Duke Ellington, Peress begins by recounting the music's formative years: Dvorak's three year residency as Director of the National Conservatory of Music in New York (1892-1895), and his students, in particular Will Marion Cook and Rubin Goldmark, who would in turn become the teachers of Ellington, Gershwin, and Copland. We follow Dvorak to the famed Chicago World's Fair of 1893, where he directed a concert of his music for Bohemian Honor Day. Peress brings to light the little known African American presence at the Fair: the piano professors, about-to-be-ragtimers; and the gifted young artists Paul Dunbar, Harry T. Burleigh, and Cook, who gathered at the Haitian Pavilion with its director, Frederick Douglass, to organize their own gala concert for Colored Persons Day. Peress, a distinguished conductor, is himself a part of this story; working with Duke Ellington on the Suite from Black, Brown and Beige and his "opera comique," Queenie Pie; conducting the world premiere of Leonard Bernstein's Mass; and reconstructing landmark American concerts at which George Antheil's Ballet Mecanique, George Gershwin's Rhapsody in Blue, James Reese Europe's Clef Club (the first all-black concert at Carnegie Hall), and Ellington's Black, Brown and Beige, were first presented. Concluding with an astounding look at Ellington and his music, Dvorak to Duke Ellington offers an engrossing, elegant portrait of the Dvorak legacy, America's music, and the inestimable African-American influence upon it.

5 out of 5 stars Stunningly Insightful Book for the Jazz Fan.......2007-07-03

Peress's 'Dvorak to Duke Ellington' is necessary reading for any serious Duke Ellington fan or any student of the lineage of jazz.

Despite long passages spoken in highly technical musical terminology (which will be manna for composers out there), Peress brings so many interesting anecdotes to light, so many fresh insights into Ellington's working methods to composing, laypersons too will gain profound wisdom into the infrastructure that later brought BeBop, hardBop, Modern, R&B, Blues and Rock & Roll into reality.

For Duke lovers, it is heartening to see Peress discover (tearfully) what we already had known: his music is a gift to world history. Peress's nuanced details as to how Duke scored his sobering emotional analyses of Black Culture is particularly stunning, he having access to rare Ellington family archives and an insiders association with the Duke.

And Duke was a poet - literally. YES!

I was completely taken aback at how much is owed to Antonin Dvorak, the Czech emigree, for shaping the jazz juggernaut, or more specifically, the jazz orchestral juggernaut. I am not sure that the limber modern Jazz idiom as we know it, or the Gershwin orchestral phenomenon, would have garnered legitimacy without Dvorak's extra-ordinary cheerleading of our indigenous arts such as Ragtime, sharecropper tunes, and gospel songs. There is an argument intrinsically proffered in the book that Dvorak might have assisted in the abolition of minstrelsy itself.

Peress only missed a few related facts. For instance, he did not cover the Harlem Renaissance leadership and it's muscular shaping of the Jazz and Blues idioms. Those gentlemen (Dubois, et.al) also marketed the Duke heavily, and deserve a mention in this book. Peress also did not describe the original etymology of Jazz as being 'Jass,' a vulgar term coined by whites for early New Orleans jazz that meant something akin to Sexual Intercourse, which I believe should be defined in every sweeping analysis of this art.

Lastly, this book reveals the star-touched career of the author, Maurice Peress, as a composer. I look forward to collecting Peress's jazz re-conditionings, as well as Classical recordings, on CD and vinyl at the soonest opportunity.

5 out of 5 stars Terrific book by a real pro.......2004-08-05

Maurice Peress is an inspiring guide to the main roads and byways of American music. A conductor of distinction and a writer, scholar and thinker of substance, he offers a combination of personal reminiscences and exciting historical discoveries. He is a leading expert on Dvorak and his time, and offers fresh new insights into the material. His original research on Dvorak's American years has been quite influential in the development of this field more broadly and thus he may be considered the "Dean" of American Dvorak scholarship.

This is a splendid book to read straight through, or to browse and enjoy.
