Excellent.......2004-02-28

All of the information in this book is incredible that you would not find in most other e-commerce books. This is a MUST HAVE for any e-commerce manager. This book is an excellent resource for an e-commerce business manager that wanted to learn what methods suit for his/her business. The book is easy to understand and remarkably interesting, even the chapter on security theories which is pretty hard to put down.

While doing my prep for an Exec briefing at E-Commerce and it's impacts to the retail and services industry - I thought this book might provide some insights and new perspectives...I was left totally disapointed. Not only is the writing sort of premature, junior graders entry level on very general views, it is also disturbing by the conclusions. I hate to say it, but this book is a total rip-off and I am glad for the occasion, reading it before buying.

I am extremely sorry to mention that this book is a total disappointment. Right from the time I opened the book, I rarely found a good in depth topic. The price tag is very high(285$). It should not be more than 50bucks.

It will be good on part of the publishers to return a certain amount back or they will be losing public confidence.

One of the Best Books Ever Written on Strategic HR..........2003-06-21

The people at Watson Wyatt never stop amazing me. Recently, I purchased a copy of the Gallup Organization's "Follow This Path." Having read it, I was convinced that there was nothing left to say. Wrong. Pfau and Kay have written an amazing book that documents the correlation between Strategic HR practices and Shareholder Value growth. Well done. One reviewer complains that the book isn't comprehensive enough. I'm not sure this is a fair critisism. After all, the book details 21 HR practices and their impact on TSR (Total Shareholder Return). Certainly, one book cannot possibly provide a comprehensive treatment of all 21 HR practices. However, since when has any professional relied upon a single business book in any subject as their sole resource? This is a fantastic book. I strongly recommend that any senior executive (including CEO, COO, and board memebers) pick up a copy. I also recommend "Follow this Path," Gubman's "The Talent Solution," Risher's "Aligning Pay and Results," and Lawler's "Treat People Right." Overall grade: AAA+++

Having been in human resources for 20 years, I can finally report, with confidence, HR's direct link to the bottom line. Too many executives still think it is "touchy-feely" and this fact-based information proves otherwise.

Good numbers, weak advice.......2002-04-05

This book makes a valuable contribution to the growing body of evidence that human resources practices have a positive influence on business results. It gives solid numbers showing the relationship between 21 human capital practices and market value. It also provides evidence that these practices are a leading indicator of value creation. That's great stuff!

Then things fall apart quickly. The reason is because the authors over-reach by offering their suggestions for implementing the HR practices they identify as creating market value. That scope is simply much too large for a book of this size, resulting in shallow solutions. As an example, the authors show that "linking rewards to performance" is associated with a nine percent higher market value. They then share all of nine pages on how to implement pay-for-performance systems. That's hardly adequate, given there are a multitude of full-length books on that subject alone.

Some vexing findings are given short shrift, like the counterintuitive results that training and 360 degree feedback actually reduce market value. The authors waffle on the findings by suggesting the negative impact can be explained simply because these programs typically are ineffective. That kind of logic doesn't work since executing the other HR practices poorly would also have a negative impact on value creation.

In sum, this book does an excellent job demonstrating the relationship between human capital practices and market value. However, if you need help implementing those practices, you should look elsewhere.

Practical, readable and comprehensive.......2002-03-25

This book is the best overview available of the current state of the art in human resource management practices and their relationship to business results. It is one of the few books on this subject that will be appreciated by both the line manager as well as the human resource professional because it is readable, practical and business focused. It connects all the major HR trends in a critical but objective way to questions about their true impact and worth in driving "human capital".

Some time ago one of the editors (Gordon Tullock) stumbled on a paradox in the competition for rents. He asked a previous research assistant (William Hunter) to work out some examples and gave a seminar on it. For reasons he cannot recall (but probably bad) he titled his talk `Efficient Rent Seeking'. As Editor of Public Choice he was able to publish without a referee. Incidentally, The Journal of Political Economy had turned it down on the grounds that the economy could not be that chaotic, and hence there must be something wrong even if the referee couldn't put his finger on it.
There followed a long series of articles, mainly in Public Choice, in which various distinguished scholars proposed solutions to the paradox. The editor responded by finding fault with these solutions. In this case the editor was arguing against interest. He, like the referee for the JPE, believed that the market works, if not perfectly, at least very well. Nevertheless, the paradox resisted and persisted. It was like the paradox of the liar, and indeed in some cases did show exactly that paradox.
Eventually everyone, including the editor, grew tired of the matter and the discussion sort of wound down, although it could not be said that it was either solved or even abated. It also began to appear that it had a much larger scope than just competitive rent seeking. Any contest for wealth, privilege, or prestige in which the chances of winning were affected by the investment of the contestants would appear to be subject to the same problem. The sum of the investments in equilibrium might be much less than the prize or much more. It depended on the structure of the contest, but the range of structures seemed to include almost all economic competition. Clearly, from the standpoint of economics, this was a distressing conclusion. Perhaps the whole vast structure of economic analysis rested on faulty foundations.
Speaking frankly, neither of the editors thinks the situation is that desperate. We feel that there is a logical solution, even if we do not know what it is. The purpose of this volume is to attempt to get economists to turn to the problem and, hopefully, solve the paradox. We present here a substantial portion of the literature on the matter. We hope that the readers will be stimulated to think about the problem and, even more, we hope they will be able to solve it.

The Story of a True Confederate Hero!.......2000-07-15

Had John Singleton Mosby fought on the winning side in the American Civil War then I'm sure his exploits would now be the stuff of legend, committed a long time ago to celluloid. As it is he fought on the wrong side and was branded a "bandit" for his disruptive activities in Northern Virginia.

This book is a marvellous account of the life of a great man. Small in physical stature, he was nevertheless a giant of a man in all other respects and was both feared and respected by those who fought against him in the war between the States. Kevin Siepel's book tells the story of the man behind the myths; his childhood, wartime exploits and controversial post-war views which saw him shunned by the same 'South' who had worshipped during the conflict.

I enjoyed every last page and was almost sad to get to the end. There was so much to Mosby that I feel the book could have been double the size it actually is - and that's where I draw my only criticism. I felt there should have been more details of his war time exploits. There's plenty there but I feel there could and should have been more.

Overall though I thoroughly enjoyed this book. I was always inclined to like it because Mosby is a hero of mine, but it does do justice to the telling of the story of his incredible life. Kevin Siepel is to be congratulated for his magnificent efforts and I would heartily recommend this book not only to any American Civil War enthusiasts but to anybody who would like to read about an extraordinary man and his equally extraordinary life.

Then he was suddenly thrust into the difficult role of commanding the Army of the Potomac only days prior to the Battle of Gettysburg. For the rest of the war, Meade served capably as commander of the Federal army in the East. Supplementing this important two volume set is a grouping of 76 photographs. These images were taken from scrap books organized by the general's son after the war. Many of the men who served on Meade's staff are shown here, as are scenes of the 1864-65 campaigning.

Priceless.......2004-06-03

I remember when I found it [Current Biography Yearbook 2003]--in a dimly lighted place near the black, oily river where the mists always swirl. That place was very old, and the ceiling-high shelves full of rotting volumes reached back endlessly through windowless inner rooms and alcoves. There were, besides, great formless heaps of books on the floor and in crude bins; and it was in one of these heaps that I found the thing. I never learned its title, for the early pages were missing; but it fell open toward the end and gave me a glimpse of something which sent my senses reeling.
