1 out of 5 stars Only a Wall Street Attorney could churn out something this difficult to follow........2007-06-11

I've come to trust the reviews at amazon, and the vast majority of the time they don't let me down. I figured, with 8 five star ratings, this must be one heck of a book! My only question was, why is it so cheap used then? Now I know.

Far from being "easy to follow", as the reviews below gush, this book reads like a stock fund prospectus. For example, here is what she writes under the title "Bonds" in chapter 16:

"Certain financial instruments are designed to pay the investor a certain amount of money (interest) for a certain length of time and to repay the original amount of the investment (principal) at the end of that time (maturity date)."

Crystal clear, right? Her writing style only made sense once she shared in a later chapter that she got her start on wall street as a lawyer writing stock fund prospectuses.

I could include countless examples of where the writing style is anything but accessible, but I'll limit myself to just one more: In chapter 3 "Reasonable Expectations" the author opens the chapter with the sentence: "When reading this chapter, keep in mind that some of the terms used here are not defined because they are discussed in detail in later chapters." I had to read this sentence 3 times before I was confident I hadn't misread it. The terms weren't already defined in previous chapters. You will simply have to wait until you've read later chapters in the book to find out what she meant in this one...

Writing style aside, my fundamental disappointment with the book is how much it failed to live up to it's title. Crucial topics for any investor over 50 are either glossed over in the most superficial way, or omitted altogether. Instead of a chapter devoted to buying stock on margin, why not have one on how to know how much of your retirement savings you can safely withdrawal each year? Also, why not have a chapter explaining how to decide what percentage of our portfolios should be stocks vs bonds (and what kinds of each) as we approach and then enter retirement?

5 out of 5 stars Finally a book for people over 50.......2007-02-02

As a financial planner dealing with seniors I know that there is a dearth of books available for people who are retired and near retirement. With the baby boomers about to retire it is more important than ever for authors to pen books about how to set up a portfolio for the second half of your life, Julie Jason has done that.

Matthew Tuttle, author of "Financial Secrets of my Wealthy Grandparents"

5 out of 5 stars Excellent reading for the middle-aged investor.......2002-11-07

Highly recommended for anyone who wants to insure that they are "on track" with their retirement investments. Easy to understand. Addresses the key aspects of practical investing and encourages priority re-evaluation at the benchmark age of 50.

5 out of 5 stars All You Need to Know About Retirement Funding.......2002-01-16

Strategic Investing After 50 really provides a complete guide to investing for retirement, considering goals, income needs, and personal inclinations. Notes and cautions are highlighted - if you understand these, you can skip to the sections where you need more intensive study or focus. The examples are great, especially for illustrating why it's important to be a knowledgeable investor, or to get a good advisor. Jason also really gives the straight scoop on investment advice - good, bad, expensive, cheap, etc. This is a great - and really helpful - read!

    5 out of 5 stars J. K. Lasser's Strategic Investing After 50.......2001-11-25

This book is easy to understand, concise and informative. The chapters are short with each topic throughly explained.

But this book is far more than strategies after 50. As soon as I finished reading this book I ordered the book for my sons - ages 37 and 40. In fact, in my judgment it is appropriate for anyone who wants to learn, in simple terms, the theories of investing.

      Book Description

Solidly grounded on Aristotelian anthropology, moral capital develops a set of principles, practices and metrics useful to business leaders and managers, while eliminating the ambiguity of social capital and allowing for the integration of business ethics initiatives into a robust corporate culture.

Sison studies a wide range of recent management cases from the viewpoint of moral capital: the sorry state of US airport screeners before 9-11, the Ford Explorer rollovers and Firestone tire failures, the battle for the `HP way' between Carly Fiorina and the heirs of the founding families, the dynamics of Microsoft's serial monopolistic behavior, the pitfalls of Enron's senior executives, the sincerity of Howard Lutnick's commitment to Cantor Fitzgerald families, how Andersen's loss of reputation proved mortal and a fresh look at Jack Welch's purported achievements during his tenure at GE.

He explains the relationship between different structural and operational levels in the human being (actions, habits, character and lifestyle) and in the firm (products, protocols, corporate culture and corporate history). These levels are later associated with different institutions of moral capital (basic currency, interests, investment bonds, estates or legacies). Strategies for measuring, developing and managing moral capital on both a personal and an organizational plane are also discussed.

This engaging and provocative study is a must-read for professors, students, and practitioners of business ethics, general management, human resource management and economic theory.

This book is a great contribution to accounting. Reporting techniques have been revised due to the phenomenon of multinational companies and mergers. Accurate information is the basis of an open market function in terms of stock trade. However I think that more emphasis should be given in the book to the techniques that investigate the relation between future benefits and segmental disclosure of information of conglomerate enterprises.

      Book Description

`Its emphasis on performance measurement affords rare insights into some innovative techniques. Moreover, institutional and other theories are deployed to explore the reasons for innovation.... The book should be a prized resource for postgraduate students who seek a deeper understanding of social enterprise measurement and management practices. It covers extremely and topical issues, while the case studies offer a perspective on the complexities of real social enterprises' - Prometheus

`Recent years have seen the voluntary and social enterprise sectors embark on a tentative love affair with performance measurement. We should, it seems, be measuring, monitoring and reporting our performance for a variety of reasons - accountability, continuous improvement and self-motivation, to name a few. But has anyone stopped to consider the realities if implementing the range of tools on the market? Author Rob Paton does just this' - Voluntary Sector

Managing and Measuring Social Enterprises examines the question of what happens when performance improvement techniques originating in the private sector are applied to public and nonprofit organizations.

Managing and Measuring Social Enterprises looks critically at a range of performance measurements and improvement methods, including:

      · Outcome measurement

      · Using financial ratios for performance comparison

      · Social audit

      · Process benchmarking

      · Externally accredited standards (like `Investors in People' and ISO 9000)

      · Diagnostic models and other tools from the quality movements

      · `Balanced scorecards'

Rob Paton offers a measured critique of the naïve realism and rhetorical excesses of the performance management movement but also shows why many of its critics are unduly pessimistic.

Through a combination of theory and research, the book provides practical guidance to the problem of performance management outside of the private sector.

This is an essential text for those interested in public and social enterprises, particularly MBA and Masters students in public administration/public management and non-profit management.

      Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Best book on performance measurement in non-profit sector.......2003-09-22

This is an excellent book. It is clearly written, well structured and up-to-date in its coverage. I especially liked the definition of `social enterprise', which can be a tricky concept: Paton simply says it is "an organisation where people have to be business-like but people are not in it for the money". This definition is essentially accurate, it is easy to apply and at the same time it is quite provocative - it challenges the reader to decide whether or not to agree that `people have to be business-like' in such organisations as charities, voluntary organisations, community groups, etc. The rest of the book makes out a good case for why being `business-like' is always important - but never enough in itself.

The book fills a large gap in the literature - the performance measurement of non-profit and voluntary organisations is a major issue in many parts of the world, especially where these organisations receive significant funding from the government sector and have to give an account for what they achieve with those funds. However, most of the previous books on this topic have either been `how-to-do-it' books with little reference to the academic literature or else rather laborious conceptual books with little reference to practice.

The book is in three parts. The first three chapters set the scene, locating the central issues of the book in the context of general public policy developments and the literature on performance measurement in organisations. The next four chapters present original research on eight different methods of performance measurement and/or performance improvement in social enterprises. The final two chapters draw the discussion together, highlighting the implications for managers and policy makers. The sequence of chapters is as follows:

      - The Challenge of Social Performance
      - Performance Management as Government Policy
      - Taking Measures - Lessons from the Literature
      - The Performance of Measurement
      - `Best Practice' Benchmarking - Why Everyone Does It Now
      - Do `Kitemarks' Improve and Demonstrate Performance?
      - Using Quality Models for Self-Assessment
      - Towards Practice: Choosing a Suite of Measures
      - A More Measured Management?

Of these, the most valuable for me personally was the chapter on `The Performance of Measurement'. It examines how three `measurement leaders' in the social enterprise sector go about the business of measuring performance. It presents research on three case studies - Groundwork (a network of environmental resource centres in the UK), PHS (a non-profit based in Seattle with a $50m turnover and the mission of `improving lives through jobs, social services and housing) and the New Economics Foundation (a London-based independent research and policy institute committed to building a just and sustainable economy) - and then draws out a number of common themes. These themes include the value of performance measurement systems being voluntaristic as compared to imposed, the difficulty of providing information which would simultaneously support requirements for performance judgements at institutional, managerial and professional levels, the considerable costs of performance measurement, and the `proliferation and churn' in the number of measures typically used. This chapter provides rich evidence to support the key emerging conclusions in the field.

Finally, the author says in the Preface that he has `tried to write in a way that will be accessible to policy and practice communities as well as contributing to academic debates. In this the book succeeds admirably - it is written with a directness and vividness of style that puts it miles ahead in readability, compared to all other books on performance measurement in the public and non-profit sectors.

After scanning this and six other similar books, I chose this one for my home study. There is an intellectual clarity in _RE Fundamentals_ that makes it stand out from the others. It has the accuracy of a scholarly work without being opaque. No marketing hype here. Nothing about how rich you are going to be. Quizzes at the end of each chapter are brief but adequate.

5 out of 5 stars Good real estate primer..........2000-12-13

This is the book that is given with the pre-licence classes at the tennessee real estate education system(TREES). The class is not taught right from the book but they believe that this book is a solid primer and reference point. I agree, this book provides all the basic general information needed to pass the real estate exam anywhere and it is presented in an organized easy to read format. Also the price is very reasonable compared to other RE primers. I recommend it.

          Book Description

The target market for this text is an introductory undergraduate course in which students have relatively little familiarity with investments and would like a practical and applied type of text. The approach of this undergraduate investments text reflects two central ideas:

          1. A consistent focus on the student as an individual investor or investment advisor.

          2. A consistent, unified treatment of the four basic types of financial instruments stocks, bonds, options, and futures focusing on their characteristics and features, their risks and returns, and the markets in which they trade.

The focus on the student as the audience paired with Brad Jordans conversational writing style makes this a very relevant and understandable text. This text is a great complement to trading simulations, especially Stock-Trak, by covering the basic material early enough to begin trading in the first two weeks of the course.

The examples in each chapter are poorly written and are so much simpler than the actual "test questions" at the end of each chapter so as to be useless. Book Description

Genius guitarist Jimi Hendrix was born into this world on Nov 27, l942, though he was not really one of us, proclaims Curtis Knight, a long-time friend and original band member of Jimi's first group the Squires. But this is not just another book about Jimi's musical career. And while fans may know of Jimi's rather "radical lifestyle," there was, says the author a more spiritual -- metaphysical -- side. Not many people realize that Jimi's life was gratly influenced by the paranormal. In this book, Curtis Knight reveals that Hendrix had a good number of personal brushes with the unknown. For example:

                  * UFOS seemed to follow Jim around, and his life was even saved one night by an angelic-like being who arrived in a spaceship.
                  * Jimi had numerous prophetic dreams and out of body experiences.
                  * He knew about the existence of a race of beings living inside our earth.
                  * Jimi was telepathically tuned to his close friends and kept in touch with them via ESP.
                  * Hendrix realized the signifiance of color and sound in the performance of his music in order to elevate consciousness.
                  * Jimi knew exactly when he was going to leave the physical plane and predicted his passing in the words of a song.

4 out of 5 stars A Part of the Puzzle.......2003-12-01

There are many biographies available of Jimi Hendrix, most of them written from a unique perspective. Starchild is no different in that respect, giving us one man's look into Jimi's life before and after he made it big. Curtis Knight has written a book that has historical value, but the writing style is relatively bland and at times tends to embellish the author as much as the subject. If this were the sole basis for the rating, I'd have given the book one or two stars at most. I've bumped the composite score up to 4 stars because, although this is not an engaging read stylistically, there is plenty of meaty substance included here and it provides a piece of the puzzle that's not available anywhere else. When you couple what's written here with the music the two put on tape, it provides a key part of the Hendrix mosiac.

The student of all things Hendrix must sort conflicting information at times, for example, regarding the details of Jimi's death, but Starchild is not really all that controversial. It's a pity that Curtis didn't take the time to dig a little deeper, to document the months prior to Jimi's departure for England in '66. Jimi played and recorded with Curtis Knight and the Squires, but he also played with his own band which was named Jimmy James and the Blue Flames. This was the band seen by Chas Chandler, the man that took Jimi to England and did more than any other to get his career going. I'd be interested to know much more about Jimi's musical development while playing with these two bands - more about the people involved and more about the technology. For example, some credit Frank Zappa with educating Jimi on the subtleties of controlling feedback, which Jimi then took to new levels. It would be interesting to have more views on this exciting period of Jimi's music.

In summary, this is a worthwhile source for the hardcore Hendrix reader, but if you just want one book, you could consider the encyclopedic Electric Gypsy, or (better in my opinion) Musician, bu Keith Chadwick.

5 out of 5 stars ITS MORE THAN JUST ROCK AND ROLL.......2001-03-07

JIMI WAS MORE THAN JUST 'SEX, DRUGS, AND WILD MUSIC'When you think of Jimi Hendrix you no doubt think of Woodstock, pot, acid and wild living. But by reading this book by a member of one of Jimi's early bands, it becomes obvious that this "dude" had a great spirit, a great soul. He believed in LOFTIER THINGS, had many metaphysical experiences (including out of body trips) and claims an angelic-like UFO being saved his life (UFOs were said to follow him whereever he played). I learned so much from reading this book that I had never heard of before.Jimi was a very special being...he even hinted that he had come from another space and time to preach the gospel of love to earth. He did his job and in the blink of an eye he was gone. An unfortunate -- but prophetic -- event ended his life here on terra firma. Find out the inner workings of this miracle musician.

4 out of 5 stars The Soul Of A Genius.......2001-03-01

When Jimi Hendrix experienced his first big break playing at popular clubs in London in 1967, where he was seen and heard by numerous British rock stars such as Paul McCartney, Eric Clapton and Pete Townsend, one of the first reactions was that Hendrix seemed to have landed from outer space, sent here to show mere Earthlings new things about the electric guitar and its limitless possibilities. What began as a simple metaphor, attempting to describe just how innovative and revolutionary Hendrix's playing was, might have also contained some quite literal truth.

Author Curtis Knight was a longtime friend of Hendrix, being one of the first to give Hendrix some work when the future superstar was down on his luck in New York and couldn't even pay the rent on his hotel room. The two remained friends up until Hendrix died in London in 1970 at age 27, and Knight believes that Hendrix's spirit still watches over and communicates with him from the Other Side.

In the course of their years together, Hendrix often discussed his own paranormal experiences with Knight, who dutifully reports many such stories in "Jimi Hendrix: Starchild." For one thing, Hendrix believed that UFOs used to follow him around and that his life was even saved by an angel-like being who arrived in a spaceship and helped him survive being trapped in a freezing van in the middle of a killer snowstorm. Hendrix reportedly had numerous prophetic dreams and out-of-body experiences. He claimed to know that there was a race of beings living inside the Inner Earth. Some say that Hendrix was telepathically "tuned in" to his close friends and was able to communicate with them mentally.

All of which makes for very interesting reading of course. The book also contains many photos, including several of Hendrix and Knight together.

The spiritual/metaphysical side of Jimi Hendrix has managed over the years to surface somewhat in his lyrics, but Knight's detailed examination of the way Hendrix believed in and interacted with the supernatural contains revelations that go way beyond any mere analysis of the words Hendrix sang as he poured out his heart with virtuoso guitar playing. If you're a fan of Hendrix and his music, or simply interested in the paranormal in general, Knight's "Jimi Hendrix: Starchild" will give you new insights into both the genius and the soul of one of rock's greatest luminaries.

5 out of 5 stars A book that stimulates the mind and the heart !.......2000-05-24

This book is perhaps the best kept secret of it's genra, yet classifing this book under just one subject matter would be rather difficult. Many subject matters are discussed hear, mostly centering around conflicts between, Christianity, and Judiasm. In between these 2 largest religions of the world are funny anectdotes, personal experiences of a Holocaust survivor, life with a handicapp in family, more funny anecdotes, charm, wit, lightheartedness, things from Jesus to Cathy Lee Gifford, from being a doctor, to being a human, to most importantly FORGIVE. Believe me the list could go on, and on and on. If you are a deep thinker, this book is for you. If you are in the medical feild, this book is for you. If you are a philospher, this book is for you. If you are interested in the Holocaust from the perspective of a surviver, this book is for you. If you are a rabbi or priest, athiest or humanist, this book is DEFINATLY for you. If you are a compasionate person, this book is for your heart. If you are an intellectual, this book if for your mind. This wonderful book is written in a conversational mode. Dr. Hartman is speaking to you, the reader, such as a Grampa in a cushiony recliner, telling stories, and sharing wisdom with his grandchild. This is how this book makes you feel. The simple yet witty language is so acessable that you don't actually feel that you are reading it, but that it is being read to you. A breaze of book, windy and easy to read, yet deep and effective as a low gust of wind. I am sure if you read this book, it will affect you. A book that stimulates the mind and the heart.

5 out of 5 stars A touching story and man.......2000-03-30

This is a wonderful book about Dr. Hartmann and his life and tribulations. He talks about his life in Germany, his life in Syracuse NY and about his family and friends. One can empathise with his pains and be lifted up by his accomplishments.
